Coeli's Picks: Pink, part 2
(Multiple movies listed left to right.)
One Dress a Day Challenge
March: Pink Redux
Murdoch Mysteries (s7e8, "Republic of Murdoch") / Hélène Joy as Dr. Julia Ogden
I asked Coeli if she knew of any good pink dresses for Dr. Ogden and she said there were surprisingly few. And then I ran out of March before getting a chance to use any of them! But here's what she found.

Man I knew the Midnight Train to Kingston ep of Murdoch was good, but ooh boy that’s a fantastic episode, Gillies is fabulous, I originally watched that ep when I was like 13-14 (nearing a decade ago) and him jumping over the handcuffs literally never left my brain I remember the whole ep being so intense but that moment especially my god it’s where you go from not knowing if Gillies has a plan to knowing he’s been fully manipulating the whole situation from the beginning! I had completely forgotten that he kissed Murdoch though lmao, very good, very Judas’ Kiss which then was obviously followed by a bit of a Reichenbach Falls situation both of which are very good references to make in general, but especially in this situation considering Gillies is the Moriarty to Murdoch’s Holmes, and considering they are great enemies, referencing the original great enemies is of course also incredibly fitting

Currently, you can enjoy the second half of the S7 of STARZ's Outlander which is a historical romance time travel series based on the books written by Diana Gabaldonof the same name. It follows Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a British nurse who travels from the 20th-century to 17th-century Scotland. In the new timeline, she meets and falls in love with a Highland warrior, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). With only 1 more season left, we're looking forward to see what other stories will be told in future spin-offs which we're looking forward to.
We sat down with Charles Vandervaart (Holly Hobbie, The Craft: Legacy, Murdoch Mysteries) who plays Jamie's son, William Ransom to find out about how he came to this show, what he loves about it, as well as upcoming projects that he is involved.
ATHLEISURE MAG: What was the first film or series that made you fall in love with acting and when did you realize that you wanted to be an actor?
CHARLES VANDERVAART: I was very young. I remember going to a play at my local theatre when I was about 6, and I was just enthralled by it. In the car home I asked my parents if I could try to do a play. I got my first ever gig at that same theatre. I fell in love with acting playing Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol.
AM: What do you enjoy about storytelling?
CV: Storytelling is so very human, we come together in the telling of stories. We can learn to empathize with and learn from others and in doing so, learn more about ourselves and the world around us. We endure through stories. Beauty that may otherwise be lost is protected and preserved in story.
AM: We've enjoyed watching Outlander and we know a number of fans also enjoy the book, how much did you know about this series before you came to it?
CV: My aunt has been a really big fan for years now. I remember her talking about the show when we would get together for holidays. I watched a couple of episodes on my own before I auditioned, but after my first audition I binged the whole thing and fell in love with the story.
AM: You play William Ransom. Can you tell us about your character and how he fits into the world of Outlander?
CV: William Henry Clarence George Ransom is the bastard son of Jamie Fraser, however he believes he is the biological son of the 8th Earl of Ellesmere, who died on the day of his birth along with his mother. He was raised by Lord John as the 9th Earl. He grew up in affluent circles, learning about the world through the lens of the ultra wealthy in England. English patriotism and a loyalty to the crown became major aspects of his identity. When William learns of his true parentage, his entire identity shatters. He becomes this tornado of rage, feeling betrayed by Lord John and everyone else who kept this secret from him.
AM: How do you approach playing William and what is it like acting in a period piece?
CV: Well I get a lot of help from the writing, costumes, accent, etc to create William. Carol Ann Crawford, the dialect coach on the show was a tremendous help in finding William’s accent. Once I start talking like him, the rest of William quickly followed.
Tumblr media
AM: We know fans of the show enjoy the cast and of course, Sam Heughan. What is it like playing against him?
CV: I remember one of my last scenes in season 7 was with Sam, even though we’ve been filming for a year at this point it only hit me then that my character’s dad was Jamie Fraser. It felt a little like I was watching the show in real time. I was feeling very grateful for this amazing journey. He's a hell of a scene partner.
AM: A few weeks ago, S7 part 2 began releasing episodes what can you tell us about this portion of the season?
CV: Identity crisis is central for Mr. Ransom. S7 part 2 involves a great deal of pain for William. He also hurts a lot of people this season. Let's hope he grows from his pain and becomes better. I think he needs some therapy for sure.
AM: In terms of filming a show such as this, we imagine that it can be long hours - what do you do to prepare when you're going on set and what do you once you complete filming for the day?
CV: Coffee coffee coffee!! The long days and early starts can be a lot, no one likes to wake up at 4am. The Scottish Highland air help wakes you up though, one of the many perks of shooting in such a wonderful country.
AM: When you're not on set, how do you stay in shape and what are 3 workouts that you do that we should consider adding into our routines?
CV: Rock climbing has been my go to over the last couple of years. I absolutely love it. It feels nice to have such a simple task to complete that requires creativity and athleticism. As far as gyming goes, my three go to’s are probably hip thrusts for legs, pull ups for my back, and shoulder press for shoulders and triceps.
AM: When you're taking time for yourself, what would we find you doing?
CV: I love a good hike, outdoor rock climbing, gardening.. get me outside and I’m happy.

Random season 7 trying to round up info stuff:
We don’t have an official number of episodes. IMDb currently has titles for 6 (one of which is labeled as episode 8, so they’re doing at least that many.) Next Episode has 8 titles. The Shaftesbury website last I checked lists Hudson and Rex as having 109 episodes so that would seem to indicate there are 9 total in s7. There was an until rumour of 10 episodes which came from someone close to production, but I wonder if they cut it down to 8 or 9 due to John Reardon’s illness.
Worth noting: Every other Canadian drama series that I follow has a short season. Most of them (Murdoch Mysteries being the notable established exception, and the only one with a longer season) don’t/didn’t start until mid-season. The shorter episode order may not have been entirely due to John’s illness, but I guess we’ll see.
Interestingly, one episode on IMDb currently doesn’t have John in the cast list. I can’t see them writing him out of an episode entirely but who knows how they’re going to explain (what I’m expecting to be) Charlie’s reduced screen time.
Also noteworthy: it looks like Renley and Detective Porter are each coming back.

Is it just me or when you rewatch older seasons of Murdoch do you really start to feel like both William and Julia have lost a lot as characters over the years? I admit he was never exactly one of my faves, but at least at the beginning Murdoch felt like a somewhat fun + interesting protag. He shot arrows in his office and tested theories on dead pigs and recreated murder scenes in his mind and it was!! Genuinely entertaining!! And Julia was constantly working to open her mind and push the restraints around her-- be it through coming up with new ways to identify poisions or protesting for women's suffrage or even crossdressing! But now, Julia seems to have hardly any push left in her and Murdoch is just plain... well, dry. Then, after watching full episodes of Julia tagging along passively and Murdoch listing suspects dryly, we can always look forward to them ending it with the exact same flirting lines as have been said every episode since season 10.
I mean, I do understand why this could be happening-- for one, it's been, yk, 17 seasons of the same protag and his same partner/love interest. But also, hot take, if the writers can't keep writing them in ways that feel interesting, they just shouldn't. It's high-time that Murdoch retired/switched workplaces and Watts and Miss Hart were able to take over as the prime crime-solving duo! They've both only been around for 6-7 seasons and still have SO much more development to be had, especially if they were finally giving the time + space.
Even the problem of repeating murder mystery plots would probably be improved. Watts obviously has VERY different investigative methods (when he's even allowed to use them, since ofc Murdoch as protag HAS to solve 99% of the crimes :/) and thus pretty much the entire trajectory of the murder plotlines would be shifted. New stories/solutions would be opened up, since maybe Watts' methods would be more likely to yield them than Murdoch's. Or maybe he'd just be more likely to be around certain murders. The point is, having a character who was literally created to be almost the 'opposite' of Murdoch as the new detective would certainly add some much-needed variety.
Unironically, I think getting rid of Murdoch might be the only way to save Murdoch Mysteries at this point.

The Butterfly Effect by JeannieMac Summary: A brief (very brief!) episode tag for "Murdochophobia" (7.06). William, Julia, the butterflies.
Life in the Balance by meridian_rose (meridianrose) Summary: AU set during 11x09, "The Talking Dead". Agnes succeeds in poisoning Watts, leaving him fighting for his life and George beside himself with worry.
Bloodlust II by Voltaire63 Summary: A figure from Murdoch's past turns up to stalk the detective.
Side Window by Voltaire63 Summary: While recuperating, Murdoch witnesses something he was not meant to see.
The Rest of Our Lives by Voltaire63 Summary: An alternate view of Julia telling William about the threat from Gillies, after 714.
Going Forward by Voltaire63 Summary: One shot. Next scene in Last Train To Kingston, 709.

Trials & Tribulations by Sask Summary: Set after the end of Season 6 - James Gillies' trial approaches, but on the way to the court house Detective Murdoch is abducted. Can Gillies be behind it, even from behind bars?

Wild, Wild Yukon by Red Warrior Summary: Five months have gone by without any news from William Murdoch. Thomas Brackenreid, George Crabtree and Julia Ogden decide to travel to Yukon to find the detective by themselves and, they hope, bring him back to Toronto. WM/JO - Rating may go up.
Realizations by MysterMurdochFan Summary: Murdoch and Brackenreid are involved in an accident
My Soul To Take by Demosthenes23 Summary: Murdoch succumbs to a mysterious illness and faces his most sinister threat yet. *Volume I of the alternate timeline series.*
Home Again Soon by TheLastSaskDragonRider Summary: Watts is kidnapped. (takes place between season 13/14, no season 14 spoilers)
It's Not Time by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Spoilers from 16x11, "D.O.A." (the black and white film noir episode). Missing scenes as Murdoch recovers from a nasty poison.
we're going down (six underground) by fluffier432 Summary: It had been a number of days already (George had lost count just how many), and he was no closer to escaping the clutch of his kidnapper. Maybe slightly, if his healing foot counted, but that wouldn’t be much use if he couldn’t unlock the front door to run away. Even if he could pick the lock, there would be no time before Amelia caught up to him, and that would only be if he could get past her in the first place. She had him seated at the desk, not tied down as she believed his foot still could not bear his weight (and it nearly couldn’t), as she lay on the bed between him and the bedroom door. Nobody had come to rescue him yet, which felt out of character for the quick-acting Murdoch. He supposed perhaps they hadn’t even discovered he was missing at all; he was on a book tour, after all, it’s not like his absence at work would be considered unusual. Whumptober 2022 Day 5: Blood Loss/Running Out Of Air/Hypothermia
S-O-S by Horatio13 Summary: He was pinned in a pretty tight pocket, but not tight enough that it was impossible to breathe. Uncomfortably difficult, yes, but definitely possible. His ears were ringing. Something sharp was stabbing in his thigh. He couldn’t feel his fingers on his right hand, but he couldn’t see enough of them to figure out what the problem was. He could feel something wet and sticky starting to pool underneath his legs and stomach. Well, thought George numbly. This is fun.
Whumping the Bugalugs Series by Horatio13 Summary: Slaps the top of George's helmet This bad boy can fit SO much pain!
The Lady and the Arrow by GoodMorningMoon Summary: A crossbow bolt to the gut is quite a blow no matter how fit you are. Murdoch recovers from the events of 1x11, "Bad Medicine."
Steady On by GoodMorningMoon Summary: After the ambush at the church, only a select few know George Crabtree is still alive. Cross-posted to ff.net.
Out of the Woods by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Filling a gap in S8E11, "All That Glitters." How did George get a wounded Murdoch home from Haileybury?
The Lady and the Arrow by GoodMorningMoon Summary: A crossbow bolt to the gut is quite a blow no matter how fit you are. Murdoch recovers from the events of 1x11, "Bad Medicine."
Mr. Crabtree's Insistence by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Missing scene from (and spoilers for) 15x22, "Sweet Amelia." Effie seeks help for George after a deeply traumatic experience.

Reblogging for Grey Redux.

One Dress a Week Challenge
June: Grey
Murdoch Mysteries (s7 e1, "Murdoch Ahoy") / Helene Joy as Dr. Julia Ogden
I think of this as the equivalent to the Scarlet Pimpernel grey redingote, just from a hundred years or so later: it's a practical traveling outfit in grey, with stripes and some white at the neck. It looks very neatly put together, and the striped band on the skirt ties the top and bottom halves together nicely.
The design of the sleeves is interesting and attractive, with the cuffs looped up and turned back to show the striped material, while the white of the under-layer peeks through. I've included a closeup to show the details.

Murdoch Mysteries Season 11, Episode 7 “The Accident”.
Not many series can hit out of the park with not only a good mystery but one of the best performances of a guest star anyone could ask for.
Murdoch casting agents definitely earned their pay when they hired the brilliantly David Hewlett to play Dilbert Dilton, a character we meet in Season 9, Episode 16 “Bl**dy H*ll”.
Considering we only see the character twice it speaks volumes that with a long running show like Murdoch that an episode from the 11th season has one of the highest episode rating on IMBd for the series with a 9.2 rating and this is thanks to David Hewlett, Thomas Craig, and Angela Vint.
youtube
If you haven’t watched the series you don’t know what you’re missing because there are so many episodes that are truly gems and The Accident is the crown jewel.
