i actually despise how input design is not seen as one of the main art forms that make up game creation

the controller will never disappear. 'immersion' (i.e i forgot the controller was there (sorta (kinda)(not really))) is not an objectively positive goal. a camera you can move is not objectively better. making common or simple interactions use one button is not objectively superior control scheme to a more complicated one. the controller is the primary way a player interacts with a game but the implications and consequences of control schemes, and the controller itself, are barely thought of beyond 'how can we make it as easy as possible for the player to do x' this is why the modern tomb raiders, uncharted, jedi survivor (and a thousand other games) have mechanically forgettable and completely interchangeable ''platforming'' that says nothing interesting about them as individual experiences.

unlike the ps1 tomb raiders which, for all their flaws, are at least *interesting*. at least have something to say about the difficulty of navigating crumbling ruins. and i fucking hate the dual analog control scheme. it should not be in every third or first person shooter. it cant even convey precision aiming well because an analog stick is so poor at that and yet every FPS control scheme nowadays is a bad imitation of a mouse and keyboard. even tho they still need to douse it in auto aim and completely ignore the Y axis to make them playable!

the control scheme totally constrains how the rest of the game is designed and yet! it is unquestioned. it cannot be changed. every shooter must have the same dual stick controls.

but a lock on system conveys things too! a single analog stick FPS is a valid artistic experience! not every TPS needs to let you move and aim at once! its not wrong to decide to prioritise different input experiences! to create unique ones! so many times i talked to n64 indie devs about making a shooter on it and every time they wanted to have dual analog controls. on a controller that doesnt even have two analog sticks! its a curse! its a disease! every modern game is trapped in a cage made of idiotic assumptions about 'objective' control schemes and controller designs

its an interactive medium so why is the primary means of interacting with it such an afterthought for so many?

and modern controller design constrains what games are made, how they are made and which can thrive but we all just pretend a controller style invented almost 30 years ago is the pinnacle of design.

-would you target the game at kids like the ds games were, or for adults with memories of the kids' games?

From certain angles, the B-2 still looks like an alien spaceship.

As reported in detail in the story with the exclusive interview with the newly appointed 393rd Bomb Squadron Commander Lt. Colonel Joseph “Zorro” Manglitz, after a five-year hiatus, Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri made a grand return with its airshow on July 13 and 14, 2024.

In fact, the event featured a stunning lineup, highlighted by unique aircraft formations, which made the 2024 Wings Over Whiteman Airshow an unforgettable spectacle.

Hints of something special emerged during a conversation with Colonel Keith Butler, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing, who teased surprises in store for the audience. The B-2 Spirit bomber, exclusive to Whiteman AFB, stole the show by flying in formation with the historic B-29 Superfortress “Doc” and two T-38 Talon jet trainers.

B-2 pilots at Whiteman Air Force Base are required to be dual-qualified in both the B-2 and T-38 aircraft. As explained us by “Zorro”, the T-38 serves as a companion trainer, which is crucial for maintaining their flying skills. Pilots must fly twice a month, with instructors often flying more frequently.

The T-38, being very different from the B-2, offers significant value by allowing pilots to perform aerobatics, test various instrument approaches, and practice close formation flying. This contrast helps keep their stick and rudder skills sharp, ensuring they remain proficient in diverse flying conditions.

Therefore, the T-38 aerobatic jet trainer plays a vital role in maintaining pilot proficiency within bomb squadrons: they help the 393d Bomb Squadron Tigers maintain foundational airmanship, allowing them to concentrate on advanced tactics and missions when flying the B-2.

Interestingly, one of the T-38 pilots had a Go-Pro camera in the cockpit and shot some really interesting footage of the B-2 flying its flypasts with the two Talons in Vic formation.

The clip, shot from an echelon left position shows the B-2 flying a low level visual pattern around Whiteman with the T-38s.

The video includes various aerial perspectives, capturing the aircraft against the backdrop of clear skies and the ground below: from certain angles, the Spirit still resembles an alien spaceship 36 years after its roll-out (on Nov. 22, 1988) and 35 since its first flight (on Jul. 17, 1989).

The T-38 Talon

The T-38 Talon is a twin-engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet trainer renowned for its versatile design, cost-effectiveness, ease of maintenance, high performance, and outstanding safety record. Primarily used by Air Education and Training Command for joint specialized undergraduate pilot training, it is also utilized by Air Combat Command, Air Force Materiel Command, and NASA for various roles.

The T-38 boasts swept wings, a streamlined fuselage, and tricycle landing gear with a steerable nose wheel. It has two hydraulic systems powering flight controls, with critical components easily accessible at waist height. The T-38C features a “glass cockpit” with advanced avionics displays and a head-up display, while the AT-38B includes a gun sight and practice bomb dispenser.

Wish List For A Dumb Phone

I have a dumb phone with 20 days of standby time. It's getting old. I might need to buy another one soon.

I only really need that phone for phone stuff. It's small and light. It's my backup in places where my smartphone does not have reception.

A replacement would need physical buttons, and have bar or flip phone form factor, preferably in a blight green or orange colour. It should be a dual-SIM quad-band with GSM for basic phone calls, SMS and MMS, and 4G or 5G connectivity. The web browsing or download speed doesn't really matter.

In terms of featurephone features, I don't need twitter, facebook, whatsapp, or any of those built-in apps. I want the ability to take pictures, play MP3 and OGG files, record audio, play audio, browse the file system, and assign audio files as custom ringtones. E-mail is optional.

The hardware features I want are an SD card slot, a 240p camera or better, a light, FM radio (DAB would be a plus), a replaceable battery, bluetooth for tethering and audio headsets, and USB-C for tethering, charging, and file transfer. It doesn't have to be USB-PD or USB 3.0.

There are some features that would be nice. It would be nice to have a playlist that I can sync with a desktop podcatcher application. It would be nice to be able to move contacts between the SIM card and the SD card in bulk, and to sync contacts with my NextCloud address book with a desktop application. It would be nice if I could mount my phone's file system via USB.

All these features boil down to this: My dumb phone is a bit beat up. I wish I could just replace it with a slightly newer model with USB-C, but otherwise it doesn't need apps or wlan.

There is no phone out there that is just slightly better than my old dumb phone, and can be charged via USB. Once you have all the hardware and features, you might as well slap Android on there, and a more powerful processor, and sell it on features.

It's sad. There are many dumb phones that are almost better than my old one. There is one that is just like my old one, but with 4G instead of 3G, but no USB-C. There is one that looks great, but all reviews say the software is buggy and bluetooth doesn't work reliably. There is one with loads of features that has a couple of days of standby time, not weeks.

There's also one that has all the features but costs more than a smartphone.

All I really want is a Nokia 215 with USB-C, tethering, and a comfortable way to sync my stuff to a PC.

last night in Lancer

So, I set up a combat that was initially supposed to be a fairly forgettable combat with unnamed enemies, but I ended up creating a squad name, their entire backstory, and four unique callsigns with their own stories. I talked about this before, saying I'd gotten carried away, but I am now here to report that I've made these new characters extremely likeable to my players, and they're absolutely going to survive the current combat.

First off, I need to do some background explanation about my campaign.

The Havoc Coalition is a death cult type terrorist organization bent on taking out humanity as a whole. While they've had plenty of recruits who share their viewpoint, a number of their operatives in specific system chapters of the organization were sniped by the Coalition posing as an independent mercenary company. If these new recruits don't adapt to the viewpoint of the organization once they're in, they're put into a "cannon fodder" type group titled a Spare Squad, where they're loaded into shoddily constructed frames built out of literally the Coalition's spare parts and expected to die as rank-and-file troops while the "important" operatives are doing their things.

Guard Dog Squad was the first of these Spare Squads in the Hera System(the system this campaign takes place) only on the combat they were deployed in, they managed to not only survive, but accomplish a lot of the objective of the operation at the time. Of course, Havoc saw this and went "well, of course we still don't trust them, but I guess they're pretty useful. Let's load them up into some real mechs and see what they can do."

So, now currently Guard Dog Squad is perceived as the most effective squad in all of the Coalition, as long as they're supervised and compensated. Of course the Coalition doesn't trust them unattended, but if they get results, they're the most valuable combat resource they have.

That brings me to the current mission in my campaign. The Hera Provisional Squad(the Lancers hired to take Havoc out) have been assigned to gather intel about the Coalition on a shell colony serving as a communication hub for Havoc. They've blocked the long-range communication in the immediate area, but there's still a failsafe in place on the station in the form of an optical communications box that sends a periodic back and forth ping with a nearby vessel out of normal short range comms range.

Once the squad was done collecting information, the PA system on the station fired up with the voice of one of the named members of Guard Dog Squad saying "you guys are SO lucky our supervisor's on his sleep shift right now" followed by the station going into lockdown. Proceeding to the hangar, the squad was greeted by the chaff of Guard Dog Squad. These are the fresh ensigns and inexperienced meant to accompany Guard Dog Squad in combat to try to make sure they don't heel turn at the first opportunity.

About 3 rounds into the combat, via breaching pods, MORE chaff from Guard Dog Squad came in through breaching pods placed on either side of the hangar, followed by the 4 named members: Zen, Cypher, IRIS, and Dice. The Hera Provisional Squad was advised by Zen that not only were the recording systems for audio and comms down by courtesy of Cypher, the only reason they're continuing to fight the Lancers is because the camera system is still up, as that wasn't one that Cypher could cut off so easily, it wasn't a matter of running them on a different signal.

In response, Cypher kindly pinged the cameras, and a singular member of my players' squad took out all of them in a single turn, pushing their Everest to its limits. This gave Guard Dog Squad the opportunity they needed, and the named members immediately became allied.

Dice, piloting a Demolisher frame, immediately crushed the grunt next to her, and when another grunt on the other side of the map started attempting to flee, IRIS, a breacher fired her dual shotguns into the ensign's frame. No more grunts. Fun, right?

Of course the unnamed members of the squad are preeeeetty pissed at the new characters, being still loyal to the Coalition, but they won't be making it out of the facility, so it's not a big deal.

Also, I can already hear some people who know a lot about Lancer lore kicking me in replies and reblogs about the naming scheme of Guard Dog Squad, as dogs are technically extinct, and no one knows what a dog is in current year Lancer. I in fact do have an explanation which I just thought was a cool world-building exercise.

In my campaign, while no one knows what a "dog" is, there are terms that have been grandfathered into modern language simply due to their usage for things in other language, and ancient text. For example, the term "nidhogg" and its occasional use in modern English in the real world.

"Guard Dog" is a similar term in that it's lost its association with an actual dog, but is associated with a "protector" of sorts, Guard Dog Squad earned their name from their time reliably protecting the Coalition's communications hub. I hope that clears things up. It was initially just clumsy writing on my part, but I thought my reasoning made sense in the end.

Subject 150 Mewtwo is an artificial pokemon created by criminal syndicate Team Rocket. Subject is a replication and/or amalgamation of genetic studies based on Mew (PKMN DEX # 151). Subject Mewtwo has been noted to be of extremely high intelligence and terrifying power, surpassing any known psychic entity in current and past history. Its His psychic abilities break the current known laws of telepathy and telekinesis. It’s He’s able to bypass solid material, such as steel and concrete, unless such material is treated with specific “dark” type coatings.

History: 

Subject 150 Mewtwo was created born on ██/██/██████ by criminal syndicate Team Rocket. When released to the rest of the world, Subject 150 Mewtwo fled to Cerulean Cave and stayed until the Subject he was pacified by Pokemon League Champion “Red”. Subject 150 Mewtwo has chosen to live in Cerulean Cave as of 2/18/1999 of his free will and continues to do so as of 5/22/2023 as its main inhabitant and protector.

Security Procedures:

Subject 150 Mewtwo is not to leave the area unless specific permission is granted by the current Secretary of Defense, or Ex-League Champion "Red." A team of high-performance military personnel will surround the inner and outer perimeter in constant combat readiness. Security personnel designation: Gatekeepers.

Gatekeepers will pass psychological evaluation and be re-evaluated every three months. Any abnormalities or severe changes in mental faculties will result in a release of duty from the Gatekeeper profession with full pay until the next fiscal year.

Interceptor Operator Teams with approved psy resistant gear will be on stand-by at all times. Inner ring perimeters will consist of four land-based phalanx weapon systems pointed at each cardinal direction. All stations are to be equipped with seismic recording devices for any underground movement. Pile-driven high-yield explosive charges are to be installed at ████████████, ██████, and ██████████ at minimum depths of 100 meters. All equipment will be inspected daily for wear.

Gatekeepers are to neutralize the Subject in the event of an inner perimeter breach.  Immediately inform the Secretary of Defense in the event of an inner or outer perimeter breach.

AS: Correct. However, the portable computer you possess does not have the capability to “run” anything with limited electricity and processing power. It is a device strictly for communication. 

S-150: I see. May I request electricity and a computer that can run these games?

AS: Stand by.

AS: The request will need to be sent to a higher staff member.

Afterword: A nearby team of electricians were hired to provide electricity to the entrance to Cerulean Cave. Electricians refused to enter further than the entrance to the cave, reporting feelings of "pressure."

HN (pauses): Well, you pose an interesting situation for the nation. You are simultaneously the most dangerous entity in the world, and yet the international committee has agreed that you should be treated like any regular Kantonese citizen. 

MT: The accommodations have been appreciated by all of us.

HN: Hold on a second, us?

MT: I have other pokemon who suffered at the hands of Team Rocket Scientists. They are experiments, like me. They live deeper in the cave. 

HN: Was there a reason you kept this hidden from us until now?

MT: I was scared for them.

HN: Scared?

MT: There are claims that I am the strongest on the planet, yet I was humbled by one of your youngest to hold the title of "champion." I am not as strong as I had hoped. I was not sure if I could provide for the ones I call siblings.

HN: They’re not as strong as you?

MT: On the contrary. They’ve been hurt, abused, and tortured at the hands of people like you.

HN: … People like me?

MT: Your records are public, Commander-In-Chief Nagumo. I understand that you took part of the Kanto-Johto war as a commanding officer. 

HN: I did. 

MT: Then you know what humanity is capable of. What you are capable of. You were a part of it, after all.

HN: I like to think that I’ve passed that. 

MT: Oh? And actions like these are supposed to redeem the actions of your subordinates at Blackthorn City?

HN: ...The ones responsible were put on trial and summarily executed. 

MT: Who says you shouldn’t belong there in the grave with them?

HN: Because my nephew died in Blackthorn by the hands of those... excuses for human beings. He was eight years old. Eight. I personally made sure that those responsible were lined up against a wall, shot, and buried so deep that the earth will roll ten times over before their remains ever see the sun again.

Silence fills the room. Mewtwo leans forward, focusing extremely hard at the screen. Review suggests that Mewtwo was able to telepathically deduce that Commander Nagumo was telling the truth.

MT: You're not lying.

HN: The internet doesn’t have all of the answers, unfortunately. Journalists take advantage of topics like this all of the time, especially if their motives are to smear your reputation while you run for office. If you want public access to the documents, beyond the spoon-feeding speculation of a half-wit college undergraduate, I’m afraid that you have to spend more time than that before you have access to the truth.

MT: (silence)

Commander Nagumo stands to leave, knocking her chair back in the process.

HN: If all you wanted to do is anger me, I’m afraid that this conversation is over.

MT: Wait. 

Commander Nagumo stops.

MT: I apologize. I was not aware that I did not have all of the information. 

HN: ... Apology accepted.

Commander Nagumo sits back down.

MT: Clearly not.

HN: It’s a... touchy subject. I know that you are new to this, but incidents like that don’t get discussed in such an accusatory manner, unless one is on trial or under duress.

Silence. Mewtwo looks uncharacteristically uncomfortable.

MT: You say that the documents detailing this event are accessible. May I see them?

Commander Nagumo turns to the rest of the surveillance and science team. All of them are vehemently shaking their heads or making gestures of disapproval.

HN: Sure.

Surveillance Staff Member: Prime Minister-

HN: I don’t want to hear it. He has the right to know.

HN (turning to mewtwo): Against my advice, my cabinet seem to think that talking about our shame makes us weak. Although, their argument has some merit. The full details don’t paint a good picture of our actions during the Kanto-Johto war. You might not like what you see. 

MT: I have been subject to cruelty that you would not imagine. I feel that you will have to put forth tremendous effort to phase me.

HN: You’d be surprised at what I’ve watched soldiers do for the sake of themselves and their country. Human and pokemon alike.

MT: I see. May we continue this conversation after I’ve read the documents?

HN: If you learn how to be polite in conversation, perhaps. 

MT: You will have to be patient with me. I am only six years old, after all.

MT: I understand and I forgive you. I still harbor resentment towards those who have wronged me. However, you are not one of them. It would be unfair to treat you as such. I let my emotions surface more than I wanted. I would like to continue our conversation, if you would allow it. 

HN: By all means. Before we do...

Commander Nagumo raises a binder to the screen.

HN: Since you had some files on me, I decided to take a deeper look into your time with Team Rocket. It’s all kinds of fucked. 

MT: Fucked?

A science team audibly groans in the background. Commander Nagumo sheepishly lowers the binder and clears her throat. 

HN: It’s an expletive. The science team decided to keep your education material elementary, but given all that’s happened between us, and between you and Team Rocket, I figure we can drop the kindergarten language. 

MT: That... is appreciated. I have to admit, I was beginning to feel that I was being talked down to. I feel that you and I, at the very least, can converse as equals. 

HN: Equals?

MT: The world has not been kind to us, Prime Minister. Given my current circumstance and your position of power, I believe that you and I have a lot in common. We both are responsible for people we care about. We both fought to be where we are and have made grave mistakes in doing so. We are both leaving behind the battlefield, where we thrive, to talk to each other for the sake of cooperation and peace.

HN (visibly surprised): Well, it’s good to see that the strongest pokemon in the world has the capacity of sympathy and empathy. 

MT: I am glad to see that someone in a high position, like yourself, don't see a conversation with a pokemon as beneath you. 

HN: On the contrary. I’m very pleased to let you know that Team Rocket’s views towards pokemon is very, very much out of the ordinary. I’ve see pokemon exhibit more “humanity” than what the best of humanity have to offer.

Commander Nagumo puts the binder away.

HN: Picking up from yesterday, I understand that you have companions in Cerulean Cave?

MT: Yes. In addition to the pokemon who previously inhabited this cave, I have fellow Rocket victims that are seeking refuge. The intent of our initial meeting was to request additional accommodations for them.

HN: If there is anything that we can do to make your lives comfortable, list them.
