Olympus E-M1X
The Olympus E-M1X is the Japanese companies new flagship camera. It features a 20.4 megapixel micro four thirds sensor with revolutionary image stabilization, and the ability to shoot in 4K in a Log profile. On the surface, it looks to be a relatively impressive camera, but it is expensive at $2999.99 USD.
It’s about time
Olympus OMD E-M1 II review: Can you really ditch your tripod and gimbal?
I think a lot of us thought Olympus had taken a long nap and forgotten to wake up. The OM-D E-M1 Mark II was debuted way back at Photokina 2016, and while it featured a lot of great video functions, such the ability to record 4K DCI at a bitrate of up to 237mbps, it has long been overtaken by the likes of the Panasonic GH5/GH5s, Sony a7, a7s, and a7R models, as well as the Nikon Z6.
The E-M1X is the successor to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and while it looks to be using the exact same 20.4 megapixel micro four thirds sensor, Olympus has made a lot of changes under the hood.
Olympus E-M1X
Image Stabilization
The OM-D E-M1 Mark II was no slouch when it came to image stabilization. The camera featured three kinds of stabilization. There was lens-based image stabilisation with select Olympus lenses, there was in-body image stabilisation which works by moving the sensor itself, and lastly, there was digital stabilisation performed in-camera. While this system was critically acclaimed, it looks as though Olympus has significantly improved it on the E-M1X.
According to Olympus, the camera features images stabilization of 27.5 stops, which allows the camera to capture  50 megapixel shots when shooting handheld. If you use a tripod, Olympus claims that you can take an 80 megapixel image. Now there is a caveat, it is only capable of doing this when an M.Zuiko IS PRO lens is used.
Key Features

Video Capabilities
youtube
The Olympus E-M1X can shoot in 4K DCI (4096 x 2160) and UHD (3840 x 2160). When working in DCI, a true 24.00 fps frame rate is used, along with IPB compression and a 237 Mb/s bit-rate. UHD 4K is available in frame rates up to 30p and a 102 Mb/s bit-rate. Full HD 1080p and HD 720p recording are also supported. The camera can only record in frame rates above 30p when shooting HD. You can also only record for a maximum of 29 minutes.
Audio recording is possible using the built-in stereo microphone, and both an external mic jack and headphone jack are available.
youtube
The camera uses an integrated OM-Log setting to extend the effective dynamic range and afford a greater range of control during post-production color grading when used with the accompanying LUT file. Use of an external recording monitor is also possible, via HDMI output, which supports 4:2:2 (8-bit).
Additionally, a Time-lapse Movie mode is also available for recording up to 4K UHD resolution with a 5 fps shooting rate to highlight subject changes or movement over a longer period of time. Full HD and HD time-lapse settings are available, too, as well as a high-speed Full HD setting with 120 fps frame rate.
youtube
AF improvements for video shooting
Active use of On-chip Phase Detection AF and improved algorithms has resulted in precision focusing during video shooting. Group 9-point and Group 25-point have been added to AF Target for shooting video, and AF setting customisation has also been improved.
Handheld 4K and Cinema 4K shooting
In addition to the powerful 5-axis in-body image stabilization, the E-M1X has dedicated video electronic stabilization for handheld 4K and Cinema 4K (C4K) shooting. The image stabilization strength has three levels.

Live ND
This new feature virtually extends the exposure time and allows the capture of images with slow shutter speed effect by merging multiple exposures together. Five levels of the LIVE ND effect can be selected from ND2 (1 step) and ND32 (5 steps) and the effect of the slow shutter speed can be seen LIVE in the viewfinder or LCD screen before capturing[1]. This feature not only removes the trouble of changing filters according to the shooting scene or lens, but is also useful for lenses that are difficult to attach filters to.
1: When LV simulation is on.
The expected effect may not be obtained depending on the subject and scene.
If the ND step setting increases when the flash is off, the maximum ISO sensitivity setting is 800, and the maximum shutter speed is 1/30 (set to ND2), the speed drops.
  New AF System
Olympus has incorporated a new AF system with intelligent subject tracking and a variety of AF target modes. With locked AF, the E-M1X  can achieve high-speed sequential shooting at a maximum of 60 fps.  With AF/AE tracking, a maximum of 18 fps is possible.
Size
The E-M1X is not a small camera as far as Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras are concerned. With diameters of 144.4 x 146.8 x 75.4mm (WxHxD) and a weight of 997 g it a lot bigger and almost twice the weight of the OM-D E-M1 Mark II. I think a lot of shooters buy Micro Four Thirds sized cameras because of their small size and compact nature. Just how potential buyers will respond to the increased size and weight of the E-M1X will be interesting to see.
Weather Proof
youtube
The E-M1X looks to be well suited to life in the field as it features a dustproof, splash proof, and freezeproof body. Olympus claims that these features are maintained even when a microphone, headphones, or remote control cable are connected.
Dust Reduction System
youtube
Olympus pioneered the Dust Reduction System and has a long track record of reliability. The Supersonic Wave Filter(SSWF) vibrates at a speed of more than 30,000 times per second to instantly remove dirt and dust. The E-M1X has a new coating on the sensor to reduce the possibility of dust in photos to a 10th of previous models, allowing for lenses to be swapped even in duty environments.
Dual batteries
In a nice feature, Olympus has made a dual battery system that comes in the form of two batteries being used in a single cartridge. According to Olympus, this allows you to capture up to 2,580 images before having to recharge the batteries. This dual battery system also has the added benefit of keeping the camera body smaller as you don’t need an optional battery grip. The camera also has a USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) system that can take power from up to 100 W power sources. By using this, both batteries in the camera body can be fully charged in approximately two hours.
Price and Availability
The Olympus E-M1X body is $2999.99 USD and it will start shipping late Febraury.

Cine Gear Expo 2019: Panasonic Introduces New LUMIX S1H Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
The new Panasonic LUMIX S1H Full-Frame mirrorless camera
Today at this year’s Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles, Panasonic announced the third full-frame mirrorless camera in its LUMIX brand, the new Panasonic LUMIX S1H full-frame mirrorless camera. Like the LUMIX S1 and S1R, its brand siblings, the new LUMIX S1H is equipped with a full-frame image sensor. Panasonic claims the new model is the world’s first camera “capable of video recording at 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K.”
However, there were few other details on the new camera. For instance, at press time, Panasonic wasn’t stating how many megapixels the new sensor has nor did it give the price of the new model.
The new Panasonic LUMIX S1H Full-Frame mirrorless camera
According to the company, the model combines the video quality of a professional camera and the high mobility of a mirrorless camera. Panasonic says the new LUMIX S1H will be shipped this fall. Another important feature is that it will come with the ability to shoot uninterrupted video clips. So, there’s no limit to the length of the video clips.
In addition, Panasonic made several other announcements, including news on a new lens, two new teleconverters and firmware update for the S1.

Panasonic Announces the New LUMIX S1H Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
With Cinema-Quality Video and the World’s First 6K/24p*1 Recording Capability
Newark, NJ (May 31, 2019) – Panasonic Corporation is proud to announce the newest addition to the LUMIX S series, the LUMIX S1H, a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera equipped with a full-frame image sensor. As the world’s first camera capable of video recording at 6K/24p *1 (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K.*2 *3, it combines the video quality of a professional camera and the high mobility of a mirrorless camera. The LUMIX S1H will be released to world markets in fall 2019.
The main features of the new LUMIX S1H are as follows:
High resolution up to 6K for multiple formats.
Maximizing the use of the pixels in the full-frame image sensor, the LUMIX S1H, as a digital camera, has achieved 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio) or 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio) video recording for the first time in the world.*1 It is also the world’s first full-frame digital interchangeable lens system camera*1 to enable 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K *2*3 video recording. It accommodates a variety of recording formats like 4:3 Anamorphic mode, to meet professional needs. Its high-resolution data can also be used to create 4K videos with higher image quality or to crop images in 4K.
Rich gradation and a wide color space virtually equal to those of cinema cameras.
The LUMIX S1H features V-Log/V-Gamut with a wide dynamic range of 14+ stops, which are virtually the same as those of the Panasonic Cinema VariCam, allowing it to precisely capture everything from dark to bright areas. So much so, that the color and even the texture of human skin are faithfully reproduced. Designed under consistent color management, the S1H’s recorded footage is compatible with V-Log footage recorded by VariCam or the LUMIX GH5/GH5S.
High product reliability that allows unlimited video recording. *7
In every S1H recording mode, video can be recorded non-stop under the certified operating temperature so the user can concentrate on shooting.
Since the 1990s, Panasonic has been a leader in the development of video recording technologies for digital cinema, and has produced a host of innovative technologies for impressive cinematic imagery, such as 24p video recording, slow motion video using a variable frame rate, and the wide dynamic range and color space of V-Log/V-Gamut. By working with film creators for more than 25 years, Panasonic has successfully designed a number of cinema cameras that exhibit stunningly high video performance. The LUMIX GH1 made its debut in 2009 as the world’s first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera capable of full-HD AVCHD video recording. *4 The LUMIX GH4 was launched in 2014 as the world’s first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera*5 capable of 4K video recording. Next, the LUMIX GH5 was released in 2017 with the world’s first 4K/60p, 4:2:2 10-bit 4K/30p recording capability.*6 The LUMIX GH5 is highly acclaimed by film creators for its high performance, excellent mobility, and superb versatility in film production. And now, in 2019, the LUMIX S1H joins as Panasonic’s newest cinema camera.
Panasonic now offers three innovative models in the LUMIX S Series of full-frame Digital Single Lens Mirrorless cameras – the S1R, the S1, and the new S1H. The LUMIX S1R is ideal for capturing high-resolution images, while the LUMIX S1 is an advanced hybrid camera for high-quality photos and videos, and the LUMIX S1H is designed especially for film production. With this lineup, Panasonic is committed to meet the demands of every imaging professional by challenging the constant evolution of the photo/video culture in today’s new digital era.
The LUMIX S1H prototype will be exhibited at the 2019 Cine Gear Expo.*8

Panasonic Introduces The World’s First* Standard Zoom Lens Achieving
Full-range F1.7
LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. (H-X1025)
*As a digital interchangeable lens for a mirrorless camera, as of May 31, 2019
Newark, NJ (May 31, 2019) – Panasonic is proud to introduce a new standard zoom digital interchangeable lens, the LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH.
(H-X1025), which boasts a large F1.7 aperture throughout the entire 20-50mm (35mm camera equivalent) zoom range and exceptionally high optical performance, clearing the stringent LEICA standards. The LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. is suitable not only for stills shooting, but also for video recording, to satisfy both professional photographers and videographers.
The full-range F1.7 ASPH. high-speed aperture provides beautiful bokeh and high descriptiveness. Covering a focusing distance from wide angle to standard zoom range, the LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. functions as a multiple fixed focal-length lens, providing the same or higher level of descriptiveness than a fixed focal-length lens can offer. It is suitable for a variety of daily shooting situations, from dynamic landscapes to portraits–even in low-lit scenes– eliminating the need to change lenses between variations in environment.
Comprising 17 elements in 12 groups, the lens system features three aspherical lenses and four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses that effectively suppress the axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification. Spherical aberration and distortion are also corrected by the aspherical lenses for stunningly high resolution. The use of aspherical lenses coupled with the optimum design of the lens system, results in a compact size and light weight, while maintaining its outstanding optical performance.
Compatibility with a maximum 240-fps high-speed sensor drive realizes high-speed and high-precision auto focusing. Notably, the new lens excels in video recording performance. In addition to the silent operation achieved by the inner focus drive system, the stepless aperture ring and micro-step drive system in the aperture control section help the camera smoothly catch up to brightness changes when zooming or panning. The optical design achieves exceptional barycentric stability to minimize image shifts during zooming. Adoption of a focus clutch mechanism enables instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing. The LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. also excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was previously a fatal problem of all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography.
The rugged dust/splash-resistant* design withstands use under harsh conditions even at -10 degrees Centigrade for high mobility. Nine blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth defocus effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. Filter diameter is in 77mm. A highly reliable metal mount endures long time use.
Panasonic is committed to expanding the of Micro Four Thirds lineup through its LUMIX G series of cameras and lenses.
*Dust and Splash Resistant does not guarantee that damage will not occur if this lens is subjected to direct contact with dust and water.

Lumix GH5S: designed and developed for professional filmmakers
The LUMIX GH5S aims to be your video machine for 2018 and beyond. With a newly developed 10.2MP High Sensitivity MOS sensor, created so you don’t need to worry about noise. Discover the camera now!
Announced  as an exceptional mirrorless for videography and photography, the  camera achieves highest-ever image sensitivity and video image quality in the history of LUMIX cameras, especially in low-light situations, and was, according to Panasonic, designed and developed for professional filmmakers, so you don’t need to worry about noise which often results from having to use higher ISOs.
Long waited by everyone, even those who do not use LUMIX but are wondering if it should be their next camera, and not just for video, the LUMIX GH5S will be the subject of multiple discussions in the coming days. Right now, we thought it would be important to share with readers at ProVideo Coalition the information provided by Panasonic, so, without further ado, let’s look at what the new camera brings to the market.
The new 10.2-megapixel Digital MOS Sensor with Dual Native ISO Technology and Venus Engine 10 faithfully reproduce, says Panasonic, even dark parts of the image, allowing high ISO capture when the use of supplemental lighting may not be possible. This sensor is a multi-aspect type with a sufficient margin for realizing the same angle of view in 4:3,17:9,16:9 and 3:2 aspect ratios. The sensor also enables photo shooting in 14-bit RAW format, providing higher flexibility for professional RAW stills development workflows.
When shooting in dark environments, videographers can now focus on filming that perfect shot as they no longer need to worry about noise which often results from having to use higher ISOs. The Dual Native ISO Technology suppresses noise to produce cleaner footage when taken in all light. Both videographers and photographers can now enjoy the same diagonal field of view across all aspect ratios with the True “Multi-Aspect Ratio” Function. This feature means you can easily swap between difference aspect ratios giving you the accuracy you want from your lenses, and making the process easier while producing and editing in post-production. The LUMIX GH5S is compatible with Time Code IN and OUT, like the professional camcorders, which is easy to set using the flash sync terminal and bundled conversion cable for a standard BNC terminal. This is especially important for “lip synchronization” when using multiple cameras.
The LUMIX GH5S can be used as Time Code generator for other GH5S cameras and professional camcorders. The Time Code IN/OUT functionality makes a production teams job pain-free as it provides synchronization for both video and audio devices used on multi-cam productions.
The LUMIX GH5 achieved 4KUHD 60p video recording for the first time as a digital mirrorless camera in 2017.2 The new LUMIX GH5S establishes a new milestone by realizing the world’s first 4K 60p video recording in Cinema 4K (4096×2160), capable of internal 4:2:2 10-bit video recording up to Cinema 4K30p and internal 4:2:0 8-bit Cinema 4K60p. This is a color subsampling commonly used for film production, for even more faithful color reproduction. The LUMIX GH5S also records 4:2:2 10-bit 400-Mbps All-Intra in 4K 30p/25p/24p and 200- Mbps All-Intra in Full-HD.
Continuing the LUMIX GH tradition, there is no time limit for both Full-HD and 4K video recording. The LUMIX GH5S complies with 4K HDR video with Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) mode in Photo Style. A low-bit-rate recording mode, 4K HEVC for HLG, is available. This enables playback on AV equipment compatible with the HLG Display format, such as Panasonic 4K HDR TVs.
The VFR (Variable Frame Rate) function lets users record overcranked (time-lapse) and undercranked (slo-mo) video in C4K/4K (60 fps, maximum 2.5x slower) and FHD (240 fps, maximum 10x slower). A V-LogL and Rec.709 LUT (Look Up Table) are pre-installed in the camera, so users can play videos recorded in V-LogL without having to separately purchase a Software Upgrade Key. Four additional LUTs can be installed using the Panasonic Varicam (.VLT) file format.
DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology and ultra-high-speed digital signal processing achieve fast auto focusing of approximately 0.07 sec 6 with 12 fps (AFS) / 8 fps (AFC) in 12- bit RAW and 10 (AFS) / 7 (AFC) fps in 14-bit RAW high-speed burst shooting. In addition to a total of 225 focus areas, The options for Face/Eye Recognition, Tracking AF, 1-area AF and Pinpoint AF are available for precise focusing. The 4K PHOTO enables 60 fps high-speed capture in approximately 8-megapixel equivalent resolution.
Outstanding footage, especially in low light
As a camera that excels in shooting in low light, the LUMIX GH5S boasts -5EV luminance detection performance with Low Light AF thanks to the higher sensitivity and optimized tuning of the sensor. Live Boost is another practical feature that makes it possible to check the composition even in total darkness, by boosting the sensitivity just for Live View. The magnification ratio in MF assist is increased from conventional 10x to 20x, which is convenient especially for astronomical photography. An AF Point Scope function, first introduced in the Lumix G9 and Night mode are also integrated.
In order to make the GH5S tough enough to withstand even heavy field use, it is composed of a magnesium alloy full die-cast front, rear and top frame that is not only splashproof7 and dustproof but also freezeproof down to -10 degrees Celsius. The GH5S is equipped with a double SD Memory Card slot, compatible with the high-speed, high-capacity UHS-II and Video Speed Class 90. Users can flexibly choose the recording method from Relay Recording, Backup Recording or Allocation Recording. The HDMI Type A terminal is provided, along with the USB-C Gen1 interface.
Exceptional image capture
The GH5S has a large LVF (Live View Finder) with a stunningly high magnification ratio of approximately 1.52x/0.76x (35mm camera equivalent) providing smooth display at 120 fps. A high-precision, high-speed OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display features 3,680K-dot resolution and 100% field of view. In addition to dual dials, an omni-directional joystick enables more intuitive and flexible operation.
The GH5S includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to offer a more flexible shooting experience and instant image sharing with easy operation. Compatibility with Bluetooth 4.2 (called BLE: Bluetooth Low Energy) enables constant connection with a smartphone/tablet with minimum power consumption. For Wi-Fi, 5 GHz (IEEE802.11ac) can be selected in addition to the conventional 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) for an even more secure and stable connection.
For extended battery life and a more stable hold, the new Battery Grip DMW-BGGH5 (sold separately) is available. The XLR Microphone Adaptor DMW-XLR1 (sold separately) allows high-res sound recording with an external XLR microphone.
The Panasonic LUMIX GH5S will be available from end of February 2 and will retail for $2499 (body only).

Panasonic announces Lumix DC-GH5S, an even more video-focused GH5
Panasonic has unveiled the Lumix DC-GH5S, an even more video-centric variant of the company's GH5 hybrid stills/video camera. Aside from some minor cosmetic differences the two cameras are identical, however the GH5S has been designed to maximize low-light sensitivity and provides a deep feature set tailored to video shooters' needs.
The GH5S uses a slightly larger, but lower resolution 12.5MP sensor whose 'multi-aspect' design offers a series of ~10.2MP crops with the same angle of view. It gains the ability to shoot the wider-angle DCI 4K format at up to 60p, whereas the GH5 tops out at 24p. Both cameras can shoot UHD 4K at up to 60p.
The sensor features a "dual gain" design that Panasonic calls "Dual Native ISO." This uses two separate sensor read-out circuits – one that maximizes dynamic range at lower sensitivities, and one that prioritizes noise reduction at a dynamic range cost. Unusually, Panasonic lets you limit its camera to one of these modes.
youtube
Despite the outward similarities, the GH5S' list of changes compared to the GH5 is a long one. Image stabilization has been removed to avoid unwanted interactions between a floating sensor and the dollies and gimbals pro shooters tend to favor. VLog-L, offered as an paid upgrade on the GH5, is included as standard. Autofocus is rated down to –5 EV compared to –4EV in the GH5.
The list of differences also includes up to 240fps framerate in 1080p "Variable Frame Rate" mode, a 120fps refresh rate in the electronic viewfinder, 14-bit Raw stills shooting, time code in/out functionality, and LUT-corrected display in playback as well as capture. For a detailed look at the GH5S' additional capabilities, head to our first impressions review.
The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S will be available February 2nd for $2499 body-only.
