I’m gonna write that sequel. Even if it is fanfiction, just for us.

I’m gonna write the plays I want to write. Even if it takes them years to get produced.

I’m gonna tap out in FinalDraft all the screenplays I feel like. For characters who are known and unknown, already beloved and yet to be so.

I’m gonna create, whether the masses enjoy it or just a few of my friends, because their laughter is my favorite thing anyway.

I’m gonna start living like the artist I am. Not a kid trying everything to please their family and an ableist world, not a person bound to a career they hate who’s struggling to get by. I will make it; I will survive; I always have. But I will be an artist in the meantime. It’s not my “side gig,” my “escape,” my “I’m just doing this until the dream is over and I’m kicked out or forced to give it up” anymore. It’s my life. I’m free. I did it. We might only live once. And it’s time to trust myself, with whatever time I have. ❤️

Money making the world go round. I am dizzy.

It is dissonant collecting collegiate notes that equate to $200k+ of tuition.

It is upsetting think about my worth in a friendship being compared to $15k.

It is disappointing, spending six hundreds of dollars for less than three days for a conference

With all these values, I’m unsure if my work is that same value as my pay.

like i do not think we have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to interesting and meaningful theatrical storytelling / i am someone who is wholeheartedly and directly invested in the development and production of new theatre (as this is quite literally part of what i do for a living) and yet i can count on both hands the number of new plays i've read and/or seen this year that i would consider groundbreaking in terms of content form aesthetics politics etc. and the plays and playwrights that purport their work to be oh-so-radical and "out there" and avante-garde rarely are doing anything i find remotely novel + the plays and playwrights that have stuck with me most this years are ones created by artists who i think are invested in (not to sound hokey but) what the art itself is doing and what reactions are drawn upon viewing it and what bigger conversations can occur when we engage with this particular piece of storytelling in this moment

“Purpose”

I had so many years where I woke up in the mornings feeling totally adrift. I had ideas of what I might like to do with my life: Flits of dreams about political speechwriting (the West Wing), or being a scientist (a lifetime of sci fi, a childhood hyperfixation on climate change, and a desperation to fix something—anything—in the world). But it was all fleeting, no direction—just notions which, I now understand, were impossibly vague. And I felt hopeless I’d ever get there. There was so little disabled representation, and even my going to school each day (college or K-12) looked like an achievement to most. Even when I did apply myself, and I did often, I felt dysphoric in the mirror, like I was sailing through a new-moon fog.

But now, finally—at 24, living in the DMV, with grad school finished, a directing intensive and years of education in my bones, theatre and otherwise—I am in one of my first professional theatre jobs, and I get dressed in the morning, enjoy my reflection, and feel like I have purpose.

A balanced life is of paramount importance, as is an acute awareness of the abusive capitalist machine. But I pray (/non-religious) that, whatever it is in life that gets them there, all my friends find this feeling one day.
