I keep my DramaFever email in my inbox and look at it occasionally and long for the classics and think about how much I hate Warner Bros. I'm curious how many current Asian drama watchers were here for the DramaFever days.

I was there. I had a yearly subscription. I got my money back, but I was still pissed off. Cause they just shut the entire site down with no warning.

I'm rewatching Arang and the Magistrate. Still love it. It's on Viki under the name Tale of Arang if you haven't watched it before. I caught it on Dramafever back in the day and was curious if it held up. It does.

i always wondered about this bit from the flashbacks in episode 12, as Dong Hoon plays back the scenes of the previous night in his head, putting the facts of his marital inadequacy together like jigsaw pieces. that bit where Yoon Hee bitterly says that she (or DH or they as a family - hard to tell from all the translations) couldn’t cover her mom’s hospital bills but she didn’t mind giving Dong Hoon’s mom 30 mln won to move house. first time i watched it, i thought (okay, not the first time, because first time i watched it, it was with Dramafever subtitles that said it was money for her mom’s wedding smh lol), now hang on a tic, it doesn’t sound much like Dong Hoon, does it. those hospital bills must have happened when they were doing not so well financially, right? i get that Yoon Hee is lashing out, emphasizing how Dong Hoon prioritizes his original family above all. i get that he could be oblivious to some things. but this just sounds so wrong, like it was an either or choice - hospital bills or momma Byun’s new house, and Dong Hoon left his mother-in-law in debt.

Let’s talk Bloodhounds and how we need Netflix to lose the rights to stream kdramas
Honestly, if it wasn’t for Woo Do Hwan I wouldn’t even be here... but we support princess peach lips so we were sat for the whole 8 episodes.
I feel like the show started off pretty strong, it was interesting to see how they incorporated COVID-19 to be an integral part of the story. The character introductions were decent and the pacing wasn’t too bad the first half of the show. The fight scenes were amazing I do have to say, whoever did the fight choreo outsold truly.
I think everything went downhill end of episode 5/start of episode 6, and that partly has to do with the fact that we only had like 3 episodes left to wrap everything up. After their homebase gets destroyed, and all the senior ex-loan sharks are killed, there was potential for the stakes to be even higher for Gun Woo and Co. but it felt like it fizzled out right after.
They spent a good portion of time showing how the Hyeon Ju, Gun Woo, Woo Jin trio developed and after Mr. Choi’s death they were like oop she’s leaving!!!! While I get that they show Hyeon Ju is averse to the violence required to do what needs to be done earlier in the show, I think it would’ve been a turning point for her character to see how Smile Capital destroyed her life making her willing to do whatever it takes to get revenge.... instead they had her run off like okay?
I know the focus of the show was always Gun Woo and his bromance with Woo Jin and boxing but I think they really did Hyeon Ju a disservice with that “It’s too painful to be here”... and after that the stakes just seemed non-existent? The ending was rushed, like okay we get obvious fan service scenes of the two guys training and deciding to take down Myeong Gil but at the same time it was like... Who cares about that annoying chaebol and his cop cousin... I didn’t care if the video got released, I had no attachment to this loser. Obviously, they were a stepping stone for Gun Woo/Woo Jin to use to take down Myeong Gil but it felt very lackluster...
The use of Mr. Oh and his granddaughter to give Gun Woo a moment of reflection like “I don’t want to repeat history” was so.... I don’t know how to put this eloquently but I think this Netflix formula of having less than 10 episodes really fucked with the writing bc most characters aren’t given time to process their thoughts and emotions after something huge happens.. at least that was how it felt like to me!! The episode restraint also seemed to really fuck with the writing with how everything wrapped up in the last third of the show, not to mention the last minute character introductions? The dirty cop? The granddaughter too, while she was cool... it was like once again idk her!!... The ending felt rushed, and the final fight scenes...... LAME!!!!!!! Do Hwan and Sang Yi looked slayful but other than that... what was the point...
I think it would’ve been cool to get an insight into Myeong Gil himself like why is he the way he is, how did he come across his little crew?? Not much character work was being done in this show :/
The time jump post-Mr. Choi also was kind of muddy, and I feel like it would’ve been a much more interesting turn if the jump was a few years and included the boys training while Hyeon Ju carefully builds up a network again... Instead we had a ??? time jump with Him and Himbo just doing cold calls with their old allies in hopes that someone bites....
I need Dramafever to come back to kdramas don’t have to rely on Netflix to reach an international audience because come on...
EDIT:
NOT ME FINDING OUT THAT HYEON JU’S ACTRESS WAS ON TRIAL FOR A DUI AND THAT’S WHY THEY RANDOMLY CUT HER GIRL ???? UM ANYWAYS..... WATCH TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938 FOR THE FANTASY KDRAMA OF 2K23
#yes im mostly mad hyeon ju got cut out of revenge for her grandpa and uncles#but i really do think if this was even 14 episodes it would've been really good#bloodhounds#anyways the things i would do to wdh....#they hate women in this drama is how it felt#and i say 'bromance' bc thats how ppl insist on referring to the guys who were very much exploring each others bodies#in more ways than one#but yea they were fuckin on the dl no doubt about it

i just… feel so seen right now 😭 i knew the relationship wasn’t going to last because i binged after the entire drama had aired and spoiled the ending for myself but i remember finishing it and just being incredibly annoyed. i also said i would’ve accepted them breaking up for the time being but rekindling as adults (maybe late 20s/early 30s) because i did not buy their breakup as much as the drama wanted me to. like you said, there have been other kdrama couples that have overcome greater odds and i just did not buy that they wouldn’t have reconnected later on. i always felt like the drama was trying it’s hardest to push a certain message (first loves don’t always last, all obstacles cannot be overcome, etc) rather than simply follow where the story (and the chemistry) was taking it and that’s where they lost me. but what pissed me off the most was the complete wastage of the chemistry between ktr and njh… i feel like chemistry between leads is unfortunately becoming more and more uncommon in kdramas and then they came and gave me gazes that i haven’t seen in kdramas since 2016 and that REALLY annoyed me. i was like seriously??? WHO ASKED FOR REALISM GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN BE DELUSIONAL ABOUT!!

You're speaking to my heart right now because I felt the same way. Since the death of Dramafever and the imposition of Netflix, kdramas have floundered in the romcom/romantic drama category for a MINUTE now and it's been KILLING me. So finally, FINALLY, you have two leads, whose chemistry is through the ROOF, and NOW is the time you wanna talk to me about REALISM? I can't stress this enough, no one gave a shit lmao. We wanted to see those exact two actors playing themselves as adults (don't tell me they can't, KTR is fucking 32) and, either, like we said, rekindle as adults, or work through it and stay together, but a drama like this? With chemistry like this? Only IDIOTS sabotage themselves by killing it. What a WASTE.
I'm sorry you spoiled it for yourself, that's a drag lol. I just don't understand the choice. "Things don't always work out." No shit, we've all watched a melancholic to the point of disappointing sageuk, like no one asked for that HERE. We just wanted a romantic drama we could sink our teeth into, and go on an emotional roller coaster with. I would even have been fine with like, a Goblin or Something in the Rain ending, where it's bitter sweet because we don't actually see them reunite, but we know that that's the inevitable ending to their seeing each other again like this. WAS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!?! How does Happiness, a drama about freaking zombies have a better romantic ending? Like what the hell? What an utter disappointment. I hope it haunts them lol.

I need you to know when I worked for DramaFever, a decade ago, our leadership and salespeople very much thought Crunchyroll and DramaFever were rivals. I found this very funny and was pretty sure Crunchyroll had no idea DramaFever existed.
A little something for Linguistics Tumblr.
So the Crunchyroll newsroom isn't a "room" so much as a Slack channel. We have news writers all over the US, in Australia, and in Japan. This means we have something akin to 'round-the-clock coverage, but it also means that our schedules respective to each other are skewed. For example, when the East Coast contingent is starting their day, the Japan contingent is shutting down for the evening.
Because of that, we started experimenting with greetings that could apply when Party A was coming in for the morning and Party B was leaving for the night. One person came up with "konbarning": a combination of "good morning" and "konban wa" ("good evening" in Japanese). It stuck.
Over the following months, "konbarning" got shortened to "barning" and other permutations. Now, a year or some later, this is how we announce our arrival:
