The article in question (from Dragon magazine #3, October 1976) :

I feel people put a bit too much stock in that Women & Magic article from the early days of D&D as like "wow, these were really the official rules for playing a woman in D&D!" instead of what it actually was: a Dragon magazine article presenting some guy's vision of what female characters should be like in D&D. Now, having said that, the full context doesn't make it a lot better, given the fact that the author of said article was to the best of my memory a member of Gygax's inner circle and given what we know about Gary's opinions on female gamers they might as well have been the official rules.
But I feel we still need to maintain some historical accuracy: the rules of the original game are written very much using the expectation of the player characters as men through using masculine pronouns and terms like Fighting-Man for player characters, but Women & Magic — Bringing the Distaff Gamer into D&D was never an official part of the game's rules (although the decision to print this article in the official D&D magazine was revealing of the company's attitudes).
(AD&D 1e had its own set of ability score limitations for women but that's a whole nother kettle of worms)

Dragon 204 (April, 1994). Cover by Alan Pollack. This it the April Fool’s issue and this is meant to be a joke, but they say that the best jokes are built around a kernel of truth and 20 years later, the juxtaposition of last month’s cyberpunk explosion show just seems so, so telling about the state of the RPG industry in 1994.

Saw this while looking through some old Dragon magazines and White Dwarfs. Me and my group thought it was pretty funny. Something tells me they were probably teenagers, I wonder if they still play.
