Queer Fiction Free-for-All Book Bracket Tournament: Round 2B
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book summaries below:
The Locked Tomb series (Gideon the Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, Nona the Ninth, and others) by Tamsyn Muir
The Emperor needs necromancers.
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier.
Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead.
Fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery, humor, series, adult
The Rain Wild Chronicles (Dragon Keeper, Dragon Haven, City of Dragons, Blood of Dragons, and other stories) by Robin Hobb
Too much time has passed since the powerful dragon Tintaglia helped the people of the Trader cities stave off an invasion of their enemies. The Traders have forgotten their promises, weary of the labor and expense of tending earthbound dragons who were hatched weak and deformed by a river turned toxic. If neglected, the creatures will rampage—or die—so it is decreed that they must move farther upriver toward Kelsingra, the mythical homeland whose location is locked deep within the dragons' uncertain ancestral memories.
Thymara, an unschooled forest girl, and Alise, wife of an unloving and wealthy Trader, are among the disparate group entrusted with escorting the dragons to their new home. And on an extraordinary odyssey with no promise of return, many lessons will be learned—as dragons and tenders alike experience hardships, betrayals . . . and joys beyond their wildest imaginings.

I wonder if dragons are actually better at understanding common than high valyrian HEAR ME OUT
They always go on about how the strongest bond between a dragon and it's rider was aegon and sunfyre. We find out just how shit aegon is at high valyrian BUT aegon and sunfyre are still tight, sunfyre fully gets aegon's intentions and commands in common
SO I put to you the hilarity that the dragon rider valyrians just decided theirs was the dragon language that was most understood by these feirce creatures, no experimentation or further research needed. Even after the doom and the targaryens moving to dragonstone, not once did they think to try something else. They hired valyrian speaking dragon tamers, studied the dying language, and trained their dragons using it, coz it's the Special Language that makes dragon riding unique and exclusive.
Only, the dragons don't give a flying fuck about high valyrian. They just humour their lil pet humans with it coz it's funny watching them put all this effort in.

Okay, small thing but I was really surprised to see how involved the dragonkeepers were in the whole claiming part with Steffon by speaking High Valyrian to Seasmoke and keeping him from attacking. I imagined while reading the book (and while writing my fic) that the dragonkeepers just took them to where the dragons were and said "Try not die loser"

I'm reading Robin Hobb's 'Dragon Keeper' as I am reading my way through the Realm of the Elderlings for the first time.
Therefore, please do not give me any spoilers.
However, after Dragon Keeper chapter 9, who were you the most angry with?
(Thymara has just signed up for the job and is getting to know her fellow dragon keepers. Alise has just got off Paragon and has transferred to Tarman to get to Cassarick with Sedric.)

Super impressive 2 me how Robin Hobb possess the exact and specific skill of writing the most manipulative, mansplaining, narcissistic, gaslighting, cruel, shameless, egotistical, selfish, abusive, controlling, lying, autocratic fucking scumbag men in existence. And in such an intimate, personal and familiar way
