#Dracula is amazing

This is a perfect distillation of why I love this wacky book, and why I have spent the last two decades rambling to everyone who will listen about why every big-budget adaptation misses the point, even the ones I like.

I would like to add my strong recommendation that anyone who wants a similarly sweet but even more bafflingly, inexplicably weird novel should read Lady of the Shroud. I had the joy of listening to an audio recording in a setting where I didn't even know how long it was, so I was thoroughly unprepared for how many plot points there were, much less what any one of them would turn out to be. It is a wild ride, especially if you are trying to work out how Stoker felt about colonialism and feminism.

(HEAVY warning about Islamophobia in Lady of the Shroud--if you think Dracula's tirade about "Turkey-land" was hard to stomach, imagine it more bluntly racist and coming directly from the protagonists as an integral part of the plot. But if you lived through US propaganda in the early 2000s you have almost certainly heard worse.)

by the way on this the first day of dracula season let me just say that if you are wondering whether you, yes you personally, should sign up for dracula daily this year to see what all the fuss is about, the answer is unequivocally Yes, Do It. dracula is one of the weirdest books i have ever read (if you like i was are only familiar with it through cultural osmosis you are in for basically unrelenting surprise when you dive into the actual text), a horror novel about train schedules, an action movie about archival diligence. it’s an extremely victorian novel that i really do think speaks to our time both in spite and because of the extent to which it’s a perfect distillation of what fears and values the british empire was haunted by in the twilight it didn’t yet see coming. it’s funny by accident but also on purpose - like, really, really funny - and scary and gross and horny and strange and romantic by accident and also on purpose and if i had to choose one word to capture its emotional mood i would say sweet. discovering it in the real-time serialized format offered by dracula daily was honestly a highlight of my year and one of the most fun and rewarding reading experiences i’ve ever had, and its mix of silliness and earnestness i really think makes it a weirdly well suited novel for pondering on this particular website. it’s a love story baby just say yes!

Eviction

I did not make rent, I’m no where near it. I still have $750 to raise. Out of desperation I charged my card just to attempt to pay. The 3rd is the absolute last day to pay. The office is closed, so on Monday the leasing office will see whether I paid or not. If I don’t raise the remaining $750 the transaction will decline.

If my payment declines I will be charged an additional $100 for processing fee. Not only that I will pay for the late fee which is $100 + $10 everyday rent is late. This is still in effect even if they are evicting the tenant. Evictions take 1-3 months every month I reside in my apartment they will charge me if I don’t vacate. The $100 + late fee will still resume even in eviction. I processed the payment despite not having enough to pay rent to buy time. I am lucky that rent fell on the weekend and not during the week.

This is my final plea to staying housed. I have exhausted all options. If payment does not reflect by Sunday Midnight. I will be issued a notice to vacate Monday.

Everyone shouting at Jonathan to just leave Castle Dracula has got to remember you're talking about this guy:

"I have had a long journey with many train delays and this is my first job and I have no money and my fiancée is waiting for me to come home after a job well done and I am very smol so you can imagine the kind of stress I am under"

I think it's also notable that her expectations for marriage is "the stenography and typing skills I'm cultivating will be useful for work!" instead of more typical housewife skills and having children immediately. It's 1897 and she can't have a career while married, but she's trying to juggle both.

She wants a partnership with Jonathan as her top priority!

Exactly! This is a noteworthy detail that really establishes a lot of Mina's characteristics for the whole novel.

Mina wants to marry Jonathan, she loves him with all of her heart, but her priorities in this future marriage are quite different from one may expect from a lady of that time.

Instead of writing to Lucy about the transition from schoolmistress to housewife, Mina talks about typewrites and shorthand, and training herself like lady journalists (👀), so she can become adept in basically documenting information (👀!!!!).

Why is Mina doing all of this? Because she intends to work alongside Jonathan in his solicitor job. Since lawyering is a profession with a lot of paperwork, then Mina decides to cultivate similar skills as much as she can in order to take charge of that part of the job.

It's incredible how, while she is sad for leaving her current job, Mina isn't lamenting that she can't work because she is (correctly) expecting to work with Jonathan. Housewife skills, home care, and children are last things in her mind. Mina is ready for marriage life, and all of the stuff that comes when you, and your spouse are working in the same space.

I tend to listen to music when I'm going on walks, but Spotify recommended me that Dracula Daily audiobook version, so I figured I've have a listen. Dracula's pretty cool and all, but I always remember it being super long and kinda hard to read through in anything more than little bits, so I figured 'hey, a daily mini thing might be neat to try'.

It is incredible how that team is able to make things scary. I was walking around in broad daylight on a main road, there were dozens of people all over the place, and somehow I felt so alone listening to it that I got chills. Genuinely brilliant, I'm really impressed and this is definitely going to be my background audio for going on walks for a while now.

The Brides section of Dracula reminds me how I went to an immersive performance of Dracula where the brides were about to eat Jonathan and Dracula got pissed about it and the brides started saying they were hungry and pleading

So then Dracula said something like "Fine, you can have those two" and pointed to me & my friend, and the brides immediately lunged at us and let me tell you I nearly SHRIEKED THE HOUSE DOWN
