i have no problem with AKB as a person!! just getting that out of the way because i WILL shit on his portrayal of Crutchie swiftly and without remorse.

AKB is very good at playing the happy-go-lucky, innocent, wide eyed comedic relief character. he plays the same type of character in tuck everlasting as Jesse, and in the Dracula reimagining he's in now. he's a good actor and he plays that typecast well!

the problem is, that isn't Crutchie. i feel like AKB drastically sanitized the character that was written in the script. he made Crutchie into this pure and wholesome caricature of a disabled person, who gets pushed around and defended and is always upbeat about it. The general atmosphere of fan spaces in 2017 didn't help that at all either. I remember a lot of infantilizing Crutchie, all sorts of "smol boi ray of sunshine" shit. he was treated like this defenseless, needy little thing. he wasn't a person.

I really feel like Matthew Duckett (an actual disabled actor! almost like it matters!) read the same script as AKB, and got a person out of it instead of a pity sponge. Matthew's Crutchie is, to put it plainly, a little shit. He antagonizes the Delanceys, fights cops, slingshots his friends when he gets bored. He's playful and funny, but he's also whip-smart, fast on his feet, and will talk shit like it's nobody's business. his doubt about the strike isn't him being scared and worried about fighting, it's him being a realist and a strategist, recognizing flaws in their plan that jack isn't even thinking about. He isn't this defenseless little blob that the other newsies have to constantly worry about, but a competent and capable part of the community. one of jack's right hands and confidants, an intelligent and necessary part of the strike. it makes it so much more devastating when he's taken to the refuge. jack falls apart because he's lost his friend, brother, and equal, not because he let poor little Crutchie get captured by the cops.

and when Matthew's Crutchie gets back from the refuge, he is happy to be back and see his friends, but he is also angry. he's angry and hurt and has a lot of other emotions going on, which you can see when he cuffs Snyder. he doesn't just bounce right back, he is affected tremendously. like a REAL GODDAMN PERSON.

i love how Matthew Duckett gave Crutchie room to be a capable, emotional character instead of a clean-cut sunny blob. you can really see that he isn't just Crutchie, he's Sean (or Charlie or whatever name you prefer), the real person.

AKB made Crutchie a caricature, Matthew Duckett brought him to life.

all these posts about how happy Jonathan and Mina are when he sets off on his first very important solicitor job are making me so sad. he's about to have the worst months of his life. everyone is gonna collectively have the worst time ever. He and Mina were so excited to get married soon! poor Lucy and Arthur are probably just starting to fall in love! The three suitors & Lucy are forging everlasting bonds! everyone loves each other so much!! And then Dracula ruins everything...I can't wait until they decimate him

hello today i bring Dracula Thoughts bc this is my first dracula daily and i just saw your tags on the mae vs dracula post and just. yeah.

but also I want to add that not only is Mae roughly the same genre as jonathan, he's an incredibly powerful character in the same genre as jonathan. he's taller and older and stronger than dracula. he literally survived 30 years of thangorodrim. the only thing that can kill him is himself. the only thing that can corrupt him is his own decisions.

so from the start there's not much dracula can do to intimidate/hurt him. (also since elves don't really need to sleep it's not like drac can sneak up on him)

and then, if this is post-Oath mae, well. his most memorable action as high king was to literally false surrender and then bring the whole army to kill melkor. obviously it didn't work but false surrender is iirc a violation of the geneva convention. that is a war crime. he's willing to go to such lengths to protect his brothers and he has the resources and skills to do so. jonathan is willing to be like "i will face god and walk backwards into hell" for his loved ones. maedhros is able to say "i will face god and stab him in the face, and then walk backwards into the everlasting darkness" for his loved ones. in fact he did exactly that with the raid on eonwe's camp.

like once he realizes what drac's up to? if drac starts endangering people he cares about? then the story becomes the epitome of "im not locked in here with you, YOU'RE LOCKED IN HERE WITH ME" and i'm pretty sure dracula is the victim at that point.

mae is scary because he's willing to do literally anything to protect the people he loves and he is fully capable of doing so (and making it everyone else's problem in the process).

first of all welcome to dracula daily!! i am unhinged here!!! if you are at all a podcasts person i cannot recommend re: dracula highly ENOUGH. PLEASE listen along the entire cast and crew are utterly fantastic and it’s just such a wonderful way to experience dracula the only way i can sell it with all the full force of the utter love i have for it behind the sales pitch is to just start shaking people frantically and demanding that they listen so just. trust me on this one okay.

second of all you’re SO right. somehow my biggest takeaway from this is that of ALL the things maedhros has done that are potentially considered to be war crimes (many), not once have i fucking seen anyone point out that false surrender should technically be on that list alakhdhdghhfhfnfnfnfnfm????????

but no actually. you’re right. it’s not EVEN a contest. and maybe i WANT to see maedhros fuck dracula up incredibly violently. maybe he SHOULD do this. as a treat.

Author's Note: So, I'm writing again, woo-hoo! Slowly but surely. I wanted to have this out for Halloween, but at least I'm working on my fics (and my fictions). Baby steps.

Synopsis: Paranormal AU. Katniss, an immortal countess, travels to America for the funeral of her beloved sister, Primrose. However, Katniss is not simply there to pay her respects; she plans to steal Prim’s body in hopes of later resurrecting her. While there, she meets a nosy reporter, Peeta Mellark, who seeks an exclusive interview with her. When he won’t take no for an answer, she decides to give him the inside scoop-at her castle. Loosely based on Netflix’s Dracula (2020).

~It doesn’t matter how much you learn about me, Peeta Mellark; it’ll do you no good. You may be clever and articulate, but you haven’t even realized that you’re never leaving this place~

Excerpt: Katniss lay on the hotel bed, eyes closed, hands clasped on her chest‒right over where her heart remained dormant. She recalled the night it froze in place in her chest, the night her blood ran chill then coursed hotly anew and everlasting through her veins. Sometimes she wondered if she even bled anymore, or if she’d been drained entirely. And what color would it be if she did? Probably black as death.

She was thinking of Prim, of course, as she often did.

Their last argument had been foolish to her. Primrose had chastised her for what she’d done to that lovely young couple, freshly married. But what did her younger sister expect? Was she to deny her nature? And what of what had been done to her by that man at such a tender young age?

Katniss’s lips curled up into a snarl.

The incident was only five short (and yet eternal) years ago. She remembered it like it was yesterday‒the way he’d ravaged her then left her for dead after drinking his fill from her neck. She could still feel her agony, the pulsing at her jugular, the horrifying way her bones seemed to snap inside of her before reconstructing themselves, more powerful than before.

But all that was nothing compared to the anguish of losing Primrose. Katniss ached for her Little Duck, face fresh as the raindrop and sweetness incarnate.

To think this was only the beginning of her immortality, and already, she was alone.

But not for long...
