Sly5thAve - Liberation - leading a whole orchestra on his new album

‘Liberation’ is the third solo LP from composer, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly5thAve. Layered with orchestral arrangements, jazz improvisation and Hip-Hop production, ‘Liberation’ is an accomplished record of courage, musical conviction, and growth. Known for his sophisticated compositions, Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II AKA Sly5thAve’s first experiences with large scale arranging were with the Club Casa Chamber Orchestra and recording instrumental covers of popular modern songs. Notably, his orchestral tribute to Dr. Dre, ‘The Invisible Man,’ garnered widespread praise and attention, even earning the admiration of Dr. Dre himself. Through these recordings Sly5thAve felt he had found a way to make people connect with orchestral music; “I’ve long felt orchestras around the world are inaccessible to most people – whether it be the programming or the cost, or the location”. (mag) Die Freiwillige Feuerwehr (FFW) Buchen nutzte ihr Festwochenende nicht nur für ein Gauditurnier mit Blaulichtparty am Samstag und den Blaulichttag am Sonntag, sondern auch für die Verleihung der Landesehrungen für 15, 25, 40 und 50 Jahre aktive Mitgliedschaft in der Feuerwehr. 32 Männer und Frauen konnten am Sonntag Vormittag ihre Ehrung entgegen nehmen. Bürgermeister Burger stellte fest, dass „ein Ehrenamt bei der Feuerwehr aller Ehren wert“ sei und freute sich, dass die Feuerwehr die Verleihung der Ehrungen in den Blaulichttag integriert hat. Kreisbrandmeister Jörg Kirschenlohr überbrachte die Grüße von Landrat Dr. Achim Brötel und stellte fest, dass „der Lohn für die Mühen im Ehrenamt die Anerkennung“ ist. Feuerwehrleute seien rund um die Uhr einsatzbereit und riskierten ihre Gesundheit für andere – bisweilen sogar ihr Leben. Kirschenlohr forderte die Verantwortlichen in der Politik auf, sich weiter um die Freiweilligen Feuerwehren zu kümmern, damit diese sich um die Kernaufgaben kümmern können. „Manche Katze wäre auch ohne uns wieder vom Baum heruntergekommen", führt er weiter aus. Um dem Personalmangel in den Feuerwehren entgegen zu wirken, müsse man verstärkt dafür werben, dass mehr Menschen "Lust auf Feuerwehr" haben. Anschließend ehrte er 32 Feuerwehrleute für ihren langjärigen Dienst in der Feuerwehr. Für 15-jährige Mitgliedschaft wurden Timo Enzmann (Bödigheim), Simon Haber (Waldhausen), Benedikt Kehl (Waldhausen), Lukas Kühner (Bödigheim), Florian Scholl (Hainstadt) und Jürgen Trunk (Stürzenhardt) geehrt. Für 25 Jahre Mitgliedschaft erhielten Bernd Eisenhauer (Rinschheim), Christina Henn (Buchen), Markus Kniel (Bödigheim), Tobias Koller (Oberneudorf), Andreas Schölch (Hollerbach), Martin Schwab (Hettigenbeuern) und Florian Weber (Waldhausen) eine Ehrubg. Seit 40 Jahre halten Dieter Felleisen (Götzingen), Martin Galm (Einbach), Bernd Hemberger (Oberneudorf), Kurt Henn (Einbach), Andreas Hollerbach (Buchen), Bernhard Kirchgeßner (Rinschheim), Bernd Morschhäuser (Buchen), Dieter Noe (Oberneudorf), Matthias Pflüger (Buchen), Bernhard Schnorr (Oberneudorf) und Markus Schwab (Oberneudorf) der Feuerwehr die Treue. Ihm sei es in den letzten Jahren erfolgreich gelungen, Seiteneinsteiger für die Feuerwehr zu gewinnen und die drohende Schließung der Abteilung zu verhindern. Norbert Meixner war von 1993 bis 1997 stellvertretender Abteilungskommandant der Abteilung in Hettigenbeuern und Abteilungskommandant von 1997 bis 2007 sowie von 2010 bis 2024. Von 2007 bis 2010 war er Kassier in der Abteilung. Feuerwehrkommandant Andreas Hollerbach dankte den beiden ehemaligen Abteilungskommandanten. Norbert Meixner betonte in seinen Dankesworten dass es "nur zusammen funktionieren kann". Der Ehrenvorsitzende des Kreisfeuerwehrverbandes, Andreas Hollerbach, und sein Nachfolger Michael Genzwürker verliehen der Bäckerei Hollerbach und "Baker's World" bzw. der Familie Slepkowitz die Auszeichnung „Partner der Feuerwehr“ für ihre unermüdliche Unterstützung der Feuerwehr Buchen mit ihren Abteilungen. what's the best warcraft novel in your opinion? im looking for a book to read on vacation (i already read war crimes)

war crimes is SO damn funny… like, i know everyone says it’s law & order: warcraft victims unit but having never seen a single episode of law & order in my life and having little to no exposure to any kind of courtroom (not even judge judy) my mental image the ENTIRE duration of the novel was as obscure 90s educational cartoon SCIENCE COURT (aka SQUIGGLEVISION, developed by soup2nuts of dr katz and home movies fame).

but more to the point, my favorite warcraft novel is The Last Guardian by Jeff Grubb. since it’s an original warcraft novel (rather than “world of” warcraft) it has a lot of the original medieval fantasy feel of the original warcraft games, which gives it a kind of dark and somber edge uncommonly found in what is now a very bombastic and fluorescent series—not a bad thing! just no longer at the forefront in the universe, stylistically. Tied with this book is Christie Golden’s Lord of the Clans from the same “Warcraft” series (the first of which is Richard A. Knaak’s Day of the Dragon, which… well, let’s just say i used the receipt as a bookmark and it hasn’t moved from page 32 since 2008). Because it’s about my dad, after all. But it’s a good book for that classic orc aesthetic.

If I had to pick a specifically “World of” Warcraft book, it’d be Christie Golden’s Arthas. It reads like a standard fantasy novel rather than namedropping certain spells or otherwise jarring references to the video game itself, letting the world of Lordaeron and the plight of Arthas play out naturally. One of my old coworkers, a grandmother, would read YA novels all the time and told me she had actually picked it up at a book sale and enjoyed it without knowing it was based on a video game at all. “That’s the one where he becomes the Prince of the Damned, right?” 

Although The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm has a lot of momentous scenes with Garrosh (Cairne backhanding Garrosh across his fresh new jaw tattoo… yes god) my favorite depiction of Garrosh in the books actually comes from his few moments in Richard A. Knaak’s Wolfheart. I bought the book because I wanted to learn more about Varian Wrynn but the majority of the book is actually elves arguing. While I don’t care much for Knaak’s writing style, I do admit that he brings an austerity that is sometimes necessary to carry the narrative out of feeling too cartoonish. In Wolfheart, Knaak’s portrayal of Garrosh is an orcish warchief who is reserved, battle-hardened, and downright terrifying. He demonstrates his honor, his strategy, his leadership, and his imposing strength; it gives credence to Garrosh being a genuine threat more than he is as an egotistical meathead post-Cataclysm. You can tell it was written during a point where Blizzard still wasn’t sure whether or not Garrosh would be redeemed.

To me, Warcraft is a universe more than just a game, so I like the novels that bring me further into the world and its immersion rather than just daisy-chaining in-game events together. I like to know about characters’ motivations and backgrounds and histories, about the everyday lives of the denizens of these fantastic continents and cities, and about the details of the world that make it feel like home to me when I log in. I think the books pertaining to Warcraft as a RTS had more focus on this element back then, so I find I prefer the earlier books.

Advocates for the elderly call on Biden administration to do more to vaccinate seniors against Covid-19 As of Tuesday, more than 43% of Americans 65 and older are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to the CDC. But that leaves more than half, 57%, unprotected. Advocates are worried about current and future residents in these programs. There are also pockets of the elderly population who were missed by vaccination programs; there are just as many homebound adults as nursing home residents, but the federal government’s nursing home vaccination campaign did not reach them. “We are really in need of a follow up pathway to provide nursing homes with continued access to vaccines, because not only did the residents change over through either discharges or new residents coming in, the staff does too,” said Christopher Laxton, executive director for the Society for Post-Acute and Long Term Care Medicine. His organization was not among those that wrote this particular letter, but it has been working with several of these groups and others to develop options for when the federal vaccination program ends. “There isn’t a really clear path forward to give these folks access to the vaccine, so we’re concerned about that,” Laxton said. Vaccinating the elderly a complicated problem A disproportionate number of elderly people have gotten sick and died in the pandemic. Nursing home residents, for instance, make up less than 1% of the population, yet they account for more than a third of Covid-19 deaths. That’s the loss of about 175,000 people. Vaccinating this fragile population has been complicated. Many of the elderly are not physically able to make it to a mass vaccination sites, and while long-term care facilities often do vaccination clinics for flu, the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines have been much more complicated to administer. The vaccines needed special cold storage, something most facilities don’t have. With such limited supply, the Trump administration set up a program to address the elderly vaccination challenge and the CDC says it has paid off. Weekly Covid-19 cases and deaths are the lowest in nursing homes since CMS started tracking the numbers last May. “It’s one of the few times in public health where we actually get to see the fruits of our labor,” said Dr. Ruth Link-Gelles, team lead for the Pharmacy Partnership Program for Long-Term Care, CDC’s Vaccine Task Force. Since December, the program has delivered 7.6 million doses. That includes both first and second doses. In total, Link-Gelles said, the CDC has done more than 168,000 clinics in about 63,000 facilities. Vaccination ‘hurdles’ to overcome There is still work to do. About 80% of residents opted to get the vaccine but there was some serious hesitancy among the staff. Only about half of staff got vaccinated. “It’s definitely a really concerning aspect of vaccination,” said Link-Gelles. The program also did not reach the elderly in non-long term care settings like seniors who live on their own or with family. “There were some real top logistical hurdles to get over to vaccinate homebound individuals,” said Link-Gelles. One big reason — once a vial of either a Pfizer and Moderna vaccine was thawed and punctured, it could not be transported. A 10-dose vial would be wasted if it was used on just one homebound resident. The introduction of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which doesn’t need special storage, should make reaching this population easier, Link-Gelles said, and state and local efforts are underway to reach these populations. Supply of the J&J vaccine still remains a challenge, although J&J said at a congressional hearing in February that supply will grow significantly in the next few months. At the same hearing, Pfizer said it planned to have an additional 80 million doses by the end of May. Moderna testified it would double its shipments by April. Supply increase will change how the elderly get vaccinated Because of the expected supply increase, Link-Gelles said the US government will move away from the current system that has reserved vaccines for the elderly. Instead, there will be a few different routes for facilities to access vaccines. The federal government will send vaccines directly to long-term care pharmacies that are dedicated to this population. Last week the federal government also started sending vaccines through its federal retail pharmacy program. This will be a weekly supply that can deliver to long term care facilities. Some new funding in the American Rescue Plan that Biden signed into law March 11 will also help the CDC provide technical assistance to states to set up mobile clinics to help access some of these hard-to-reach populations. Link-Gelles thinks that as vaccines become more readily available in the community, facilities will protect current residents and staff by requiring incoming residents, and possibly even new staff, to get vaccinated before coming into the facility. A Covid-19 vaccine could become a routine part of the hospital discharge process before a resident is admitted into long-term care. “There will be a lot of different options,” Link-Gelles said. Concern going forward Still some elderly advocates want the government to do more. In the letter to the Biden administration, the groups argued that vaccination clinics are badly needed at residential communities, adult day health and Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, also known as PACE programs. Many of these providers don’t have a relationship with a long-term care pharmacy. “You can imagine there’s a lot of a lot of concern, a lot of anxiety,” said Ruth Katz, the senior vice president of policy for LeadingAge, an association of nonprofit providers of aging services. “I’ve been in long term care work for a long time. With a lot of issues, it sort of feels like we are the Cinderella of the health care system waiting to get to the ball. Long-term care is often the afterthought.” Before there is a steady supply of vaccines, the coalition also wants the Biden administration to designate people who work with the elderly as a priority group for vaccines, just as the administration did with teachers. AARP has also written to the Biden administration and Congress to make sure that there is transparency about who, exactly, is vaccinated. “We need better data about vaccinations in these facilities,” said Rhonda Richards, who is senior legislative representative in government affairs at AARP. “That way information is available publicly for residents and families who may be looking at a facility. Transparency is really important.” Richards hopes the country will do even more to protect the elderly, not just with vaccines. The “harrowing and horrible” numbers of elderly lost during this pandemic pointed to big flaws in a system that is supposed to keep the elderly safe, she said. “This is an outrage and national disgrace and there should be action at both the federal and state levels to address the issues that were identified during the pandemic at these facilities,” Richards said. A disproportionate number of elderly people have gotten sick and died in the pandemic. Nursing home residents, for instance, make up less than 1% of the population, yet they account for more than a third of Covid-19 deaths. That’s the loss of about 175,000 people.

Vaccinating this fragile population has been complicated.

Many of the elderly are not physically able to make it to a mass vaccination sites, and while long-term care facilities often do vaccination clinics for flu, the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines have been much more complicated to administer. The vaccines needed special cold storage, something most facilities don’t have.

With such limited supply, the Trump administration set up a program to address the elderly vaccination challenge and the CDC says it has paid off.

Weekly Covid-19 cases and deaths are the lowest in nursing homes since CMS started tracking the numbers last May.

“It’s one of the few times in public health where we actually get to see the fruits of our labor,” said Dr. Ruth Link-Gelles, team lead for the Pharmacy Partnership Program for Long-Term Care, CDC’s Vaccine Task Force.

Since December, the program has delivered 7.6 million doses. That includes both first and second doses. In total, Link-Gelles said, the CDC has done more than 168,000 clinics in about 63,000 facilities.

Vaccination ‘hurdles’ to overcome

There is still work to do. About 80% of residents opted to get the vaccine but there was some serious hesitancy among the staff. Only about half of staff got vaccinated.

“It’s definitely a really concerning aspect of vaccination,” said Link-Gelles.

The program also did not reach the elderly in non-long term care settings like seniors who live on their own or with family.

“There were some real top logistical hurdles to get over to vaccinate homebound individuals,” said Link-Gelles.

One big reason — once a vial of either a Pfizer and Moderna vaccine was thawed and punctured, it could not be transported. A 10-dose vial would be wasted if it was used on just one homebound resident.

The introduction of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which doesn’t need special storage, should make reaching this population easier, Link-Gelles said, and state and local efforts are underway to reach these populations.

Supply of the J&J vaccine still remains a challenge, although J&J said at a congressional hearing in February that supply will grow significantly in the next few months.

At the same hearing, Pfizer said it planned to have an additional 80 million doses by the end of May. Moderna testified it would double its shipments by April.

Supply increase will change how the elderly get vaccinated

Because of the expected supply increase, Link-Gelles said the US government will move away from the current system that has reserved vaccines for the elderly. Instead, there will be a few different routes for facilities to access vaccines.

The federal government will send vaccines directly to long-term care pharmacies that are dedicated to this population.

Last week the federal government also started sending vaccines through its federal retail pharmacy program. This will be a weekly supply that can deliver to long term care facilities.

Some new funding in the American Rescue Plan that Biden signed into law March 11 will also help the CDC provide technical assistance to states to set up mobile clinics to help access some of these hard-to-reach populations.

Link-Gelles thinks that as vaccines become more readily available in the community, facilities will protect current residents and staff by requiring incoming residents, and possibly even new staff, to get vaccinated before coming into the facility. A Covid-19 vaccine could become a routine part of the hospital discharge process before a resident is admitted into long-term care.

“There will be a lot of different options,” Link-Gelles said.

Concern going forward

Still some elderly advocates want the government to do more.

In the letter to the Biden administration, the groups argued that vaccination clinics are badly needed at residential communities, adult day health and Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, also known as PACE programs. Many of these providers don’t have a relationship with a long-term care pharmacy.

“You can imagine there’s a lot of a lot of concern, a lot of anxiety,” said Ruth Katz, the senior vice president of policy for LeadingAge, an association of nonprofit providers of aging services. “I’ve been in long term care work for a long time. With a lot of issues, it sort of feels like we are the Cinderella of the health care system waiting to get to the ball. Long-term care is often the afterthought.”

Before there is a steady supply of vaccines, the coalition also wants the Biden administration to designate people who work with the elderly as a priority group for vaccines, just as the administration did with teachers.

AARP has also written to the Biden administration and Congress to make sure that there is transparency about who, exactly, is vaccinated.

“We need better data about vaccinations in these facilities,” said Rhonda Richards, who is senior legislative representative in government affairs at AARP. “That way information is available publicly for residents and families who may be looking at a facility. Transparency is really important.”

Richards hopes the country will do even more to protect the elderly, not just with vaccines. The “harrowing and horrible” numbers of elderly lost during this pandemic pointed to big flaws in a system that is supposed to keep the elderly safe, she said.

“This is an outrage and national disgrace and there should be action at both the federal and state levels to address the issues that were identified during the pandemic at these facilities,” Richards said.

Staffing shortages and infection control problems were a concern even before the pandemic, but Richards said she hopes the system can do better.

“We need to keep the pressure on and make sure there is accountability and real action so we never lose this number of people in these facilities again,” Richards said. “This shouldn’t happen.”

Reopening of Long-Term Care Facilities Is ‘an Absolute Necessity for Our Well-Being’

For nearly a year, nursing homes and assisted living centers have been mostly closed to visitors. Now, it’s time for them to open back up and relieve residents of crushing isolation, according to a growing chorus of long-term care experts, caregivers, consumer groups and physicians.

They’re calling for federal health authorities to relax visitation restrictions in long-term care institutions, replacing guidance that’s been in place since September. And they want both federal and state authorities to grant special status to “essential caregivers” — family members or friends who provide critically important hands-on care — so they have the opportunity to tend to relatives in need.

Richard Fornili, 84, who lives in a nursing home in St. Marys, Georgia, supports a change in policies. He hasn’t seen any family members since last summer, when a granddaughter, her husband and her two children stood outside his window and called him on the phone. “The depression and sense of aloneness affecting my fellow residents, it’s terrible,” he said. “Having our relatives come back in to see us, it’s an absolute necessity for our well-being.”

“At this point, residents are becoming more likely to die of isolation and neglect than covid,” said Jocelyn Bogdan, program and policy specialist at the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, citing new data linking covid-19 vaccination to sharp declines in covid-related deaths. Her organization has launched a petition drive calling for nursing homes to safely reopen and for essential caregivers to have unrestricted access to loved ones.

Since late December, when vaccinations began, covid cases in nursing home residents have plunged 83%, while deaths have dropped by 66%, according to an analysis by KFF. As of Monday, 4.6 million residents and staff members in nursing homes and other congregate facilities had received at least one shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, including more than 2 million who had received a second dose.

Vaccines have “changed everything” and nursing homes are now among “the safest places you can be in your community in terms of covid,” said Ruth Katz, senior vice president of public policy at LeadingAge, an association representing more than 5,000 nonprofit nursing homes, assisted living centers and senior housing providers.

Last week, LeadingAge called for federal authorities to expand visitation in a letter to top officials at the White House, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In an email, the American Health Care Association, which represents more than 14,000 long-term care providers, also urged CMS and the CDC to review its visitation guidance. AARP, the nation’s most powerful seniors’ lobby, chimed in with a letter noting “a critical need” for new recommendations.

Medical directors at long-term care facilities are also weighing in while sounding a cautious note in new guidance about resuming communal activities and visitation in long-term care facilities. With new covid variants circulating and significant numbers of staffers and potential visitors still unvaccinated, “we’re recommending a measured, step-wise approach,” said Dr. Swati Gaur, chair of the infection advisory committee for AMDA — the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine.

Facilities that reopen to family members should do so “carefully,” she said, scheduling visits, screening those visitors for symptoms and ideally requiring a negative covid test before entry; limiting the number of visitors in a facility at any time; sending them to designated visitor sites, not residents’ rooms; and requiring the use of masks and gloves, among other precautions.

No one wants to see covid outbreaks reappear in long-term care facilities, Gaur said — the site of nearly 173,000 covid-related deaths, about 35% of the nation’s total.

CMS instructed nursing homes to lock down almost a year ago, on March 13, as the coronavirus pandemic accelerated and the CDC said no one except relatives making end-of-life visits should be let in. In September, new recommendations allowed outdoor visits, so long as safety precautions such as physical distancing were in place, and indoor visits, so long as a facility was covid-free for 14 days and the positivity rate for covid cases in the surrounding community was under 10%.

Federal recommendations apply to nursing homes. States regulate assisted living and other congregate care facilities but tend to follow the CDC’s lead. In practice, long-term care facilities vary considerably in how they implement recommended policies.

Also, federal authorities recommended that relatives be able to make “compassionate care” visits when a resident is emotionally distressed, grieving the loss of friends or family members, losing weight or adjusting poorly to the recent loss of family support. But many nursing homes continue to deny these visits, and enforcement needs to be strengthened, AARP observed in its letter.

Melody Taylor Stark said her request for a compassionate care visit with her husband, Bill Stark, was denied in October, when his congestive heart failure worsened. Bill, 84, a resident at Huntington Drive Health and Rehabilitation in Arcadia, California, for five years, was subsequently hospitalized with pneumonia. Stark said she was permitted only one 15-minute visit with him, on Nov. 17, after he returned to Huntington — the last time she saw Bill before his death on Nov. 22. The administrator at Huntington Drive did not respond to a request for comment.

The Essential Caregivers Coalition, of which Stark is a member, is asking that every long-term care resident be able to designate one or two essential caregivers who can come in and out of facilities regularly to provide hands-on care to loved ones, as they did before the pandemic. As the anniversary of lockdowns approaches, the coalition has organized email blasts and letter-writing campaigns to federal and state authorities, a traveling lawn sign campaign in more than a dozen states and gatherings at several state capitols. The campaign’s slogan: Isolation Kills, Too.

Mikko Cook, 49, of Ventura, California, is one of the group’s co-founders. Her father, Ron Von Ronne, 77, has late-stage Alzheimer’s disease and lives in a 200-bed nursing home in Albany, New York. Before the pandemic, Cook’s brother visited almost every day.

“The home was severely understaffed and when my family members would go in to take care of him, my father’s sheets would be soiled. He wouldn’t have showered. The bathroom was never clean. But they would take care of that,” Cook said.

After the lockdown, Von Ronne went more than three months without seeing or talking to family members. Over the past year, he nearly stopped communicating, was assaulted by a fellow resident and lost almost all his belongings, which were either misplaced or stolen, Cook said. Von Ronne has since had two outdoor visits with relatives, and three short visits in family members’ homes at Christmas and in January and February.

Mary Daniel, 58, founded another activist group, Caregivers for Compromise, after getting a part-time job in July at her husband’s assisted living center in Jacksonville, Florida — the only way she could see him. Steve Daniel, 67, has early-onset Alzheimer’s, and she had visited every evening before the pandemic.

After stories about her went viral, Daniel created Facebook groups in every state for caregivers who wanted more access to their loved ones. Now, Caregivers for Compromise chapters in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia are active in the Isolation Kills, Too campaign.

“We’re getting impatient: Our loved ones’ quality of life is deteriorating every single day. My husband has been vaccinated and he wants to go outside and feel the sunlight on his face. It’s time to open back up and let him live whatever time he has left with freedom,” Daniel said. “You cannot protect people like him forever, from everything.”
