Have you ever thought to yourself: Yee howdy, I wish I could know what everyone thinks of my favorite character, and I also wish we could all definitively rank them in popularity based on the whims of the public? Then do I have the thing for you!
Right out the gate, it's time to vote for favorite characters. The votes for favorite NPC (human) and favorite NPC (other) will be running alongside each other, with the vote for NPC (other) starting a little later to make them both finish at the same time and end in an epic dual victory.
I have chosen to split them up because there's a lot of NPC's and we can expedite the process somewhat by having separate tournaments running alongside each other.
Humanoid creatures such as Pandorians residing in the circus will be counted as humans because that's how they choose to present and I will respect that.
Certain conditions apply regarding characters added to SSO just to host races, NPC's that are named but do not take part in quests, and characters from earlier games. these characters will not partake because the list is so. long. already.
Every poll will be accompanied by a picture and a brief description to refresh your memory, so don't worry if you can't remember them just by name! If you have any concerns or can't see your favorite NPC anywhere, send a message or an ask.
The first NPC (human) tournamnet will take place over 3 sessions of 40 posts per week, because it's 120 posts and I don't want to overwhelm you with that many posts. Once we've narrowed it down to 60 favorites it will be split into 2 sessions, and once we've only got 30 contestants left, I'll post them all in one go until a winner is declared. That's also when the NPC (other) polls will be posted.
Who will go up against who is randomized and can be found under the cut.

George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Stanley Kubrick, 1964)
Cast: Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens, Peter Bull, James Earl Jones. Screenplay: Stanley Kubrick, Terry Southern, Peter George, based on a book by George. Cinematography: Gilbert Taylor. Production design: Ken Adam. Film editing: Anthony Harvey. Music: Laurie Johnson.
In 1964, Stanley Kubrick told us that the world would end not with a whimper but a "Yeehaaa!" And given the bullying and posturing jingoism currently on display in American politics, he may have been right. A lot of Dr. Strangelove has dated: There is no Soviet Union anymore, and the arms race has gone underground (where it may be more dangerous than ever). Some of the gags in the script by Kubrick, Peter George, and Terry Southern have gone stale, such as the jokey character names: Jack D. Ripper, "Bat" Guano, Merkin Muffley. (Although to fault Dr. Strangelove for that is as pointless as faulting Ben Jonson for naming characters in The Alchemist Sir Epicure Mammon and Doll Common. Satire loves its labels.) Where Dr. Strangelove has not dated, however, is in its attitude toward power and those who love and seek it to the point where it becomes an end in itself. Those in Kubrick's film who are capable of seeing the larger picture are ineffectual, like President Muffley (Peter Sellers) and Group Capt. Mandrake (Sellers). They are invariably steamrollered by those in pursuit of the immediate goal, like Gen. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) defending his precious bodily fluids, or Gen. Turgidson (George C. Scott) devoting himself to getting the upper hand on the Russkies, even to the extent of getting our hair mussed a little, or Dr. Strangelove (Sellers) himself, enraptured by the wonders of military technology. But the film really works by Kubrick's mastery of his medium: We find ourselves, against our better judgment, rooting for the bomber crew to reach its target, thanks to the way Kubrick, with the help of film editor Anthony Harvey, manipulates our love of war movie clichés. The film is full of classic over-the-top performances, especially from Hayden and Scott, and of course Sellers's Strangelove is a touchstone mad scientist character, anticipating Edward Teller's selling Ronald Reagan on "star wars" by a couple of decades. In fact, if the film seems to have dated, it may be that reality has outstripped satire. Who could have invented Donald Trump?

Covering the body
This piece was inspired by a comment from class, about corsets being oppressive, that made me analyze why we see them that way, when they were often made by and for women. I want to clarify that I don't blame anyone that believes they were an oppressive torture device for women, modern media has fed us that lie. The idea comes from caricatures normally made by men, that depict women hurting themselves out of vanity, and often making the argument that women could not fend for themselves (or vote) for this reason.
They also loved to emphasize the dangers of tight lacing, a practice done by very few celebrity-like elites. This is something that the majority of women, working and middle-class women who worked in the house, could not do. The common corset helped support the body, and were made using the intended wearers measurements. For this reason, I used siran wrap, something used in the kitchen, to wrap myself, which was then covered with tape. I was careful not pull in order to not alter the shape.
I then printed and cut out different historical cartoons where women were ridiculed for their fashion, and women who did amazing things but were either punished or forgotten. Sadly not all of them fit, but I still want to include and encourage people to learn about them:
Joan of Arc - fought in France during the hundred year war
Tokyo Rose - helped the American troops in Japan through the radio during WWII
Hedy Lamar - pioneered the technology for modern day wifi
Zheng Yi Sao - pirate leader of a great fleet in China
Madam C J Walker - first female self-made millionaire
Dr Mary Edward Walker - surgeon during the Civil War, only woman to receive a Medal of Honor
Sofia Hayden Bennett - first woman to graduate from MIT architecture program.
I made glue with water and flour and attached them to the 'corset'.
The veil was made with dryer sheets that I washed to get rid of the wax. I sewed it together using read thread that represents violence. The veil also represents the dehumanization and sexualization that many women have lived.
Corsets, in a way, reflect these women and stories, misunderstood and devalued by society.

Your lifes were difficult and cut short. You both were free at last… 🌼
Thames Mysteries of 1873 and 1874
On September 5, 1873, at 6:30 am, a galley of the Thames Police was on patrol near the Battersea Pier (at the London Borough of Wandsworth, south west London). One of the three policemen on board, Constable Richard Fane picked out of the water the left quarter of a women’s trunk from the mud on the banks of the Thames river. The remains were taken to the Clapham and Wandsworth Union Workhouse, where Dr. Felix Charles Kempster, the divisional surgeon, saw it, and pronounced it to be the portion of a body which had not been in the water more than twelve hours.
The police at once commenced a minute search of the river, but the next discovery was made by Henry Locke, a policeman in the employ of the South-Western Railway Company, who, without knowing of the previous discovery, found the right side of the trunk off Brunswick Wharf, near the Nine Elms station (North-East Battersea). This part corresponded with the first part found, and the headless trunk, it was apparent, had been severed with a very sharp knife, and a saw had also been used. Inspector Starkey of the Thames Police take custody of these remains. Soon after a portion of the lungs was found by Inspector Charles Marley, of the Thames Police, under an arch of old Battersea bridge, and the other part near the Battersea railway pier. The search was now continued for the other parts of the body, and on September 6 the face, with the scalp of a woman attached, was found by PC John Parker off Limehouse (London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East London). It was evident at a glance that the murderer or murderers had taken revolting precautions to prevent identification, for the nose was cut from the face, but still hung attached to the upper lip. There was the mark of a bruise on the right temple, evidently caused by a blunt instrument, and this blow, it is thought, was the cause of death. On September 9 two more portions of the same body were found, the right thigh being picked up in the river off Woolwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich, south-east London), and the right shoulder, with part of the arm, off Greenwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich, southeast London), the latter part being smeared with tar. The left foot, measuring ten inches and three-quarters in length, and ten inches across the instep, has also been picked up near the bank of the Regent’s Canal, off Rotherhithe, and the right fore-arm near the Albert Embankment. On the advice of the Acting Chief Surgeon, Metropolitan Police, Dr. Thomas Bond, the corpse was "built up" by sewing together the parts by Dr. Edward Hayden, the medical officer of the large union workhouse where it lied preserved in spirits of wine. The face was more of a challenge, as the nose and chin had been cut off, and the head had been scalped. The skin on the face of the victim was fitted "as naturally as possible" over a butcher’s block. Even though this early attempt at forensic reconstruction was carried out with "ingenuity and skill,“ the body would only be recognizable by those "intimately acquainted with the physical characteristics of the deceased.”
Dr. Kempster determined that the victim was very likely around 40 years old, stout, coarse skin, with short, thin black hair. One feature they hoped would make identification easier was s burn scar on her left breast. Dozens of people who were looking for female middle-aged family members passed through to view the body, but no one could be sure that it was who they were looking for. Anyone the police believed had reason to see the remains were first shown a photograph.
The Lancet reported that “There is very strong evidence that the woman met with a violent death, and that in the first instance severe blows were dealt on the right side of the head with some heavy, blunt instrument; but, in the absence of the skull, it is impossible to determine positively the extent of the injury. It would appear that after the victim had thus been stunned the body was immediately deprived of all its blood by a section of the carotid arteries in the neck, since there were no clots in any of the veins of the body. The tissues were, moreover, divided while they still preserved their vital contractibility, for, according to the evidence of Mr. Kempster, the muscles in the portions of the body that were first examined were fresh and retracted, so that death must have occurred within a very few hours.”
Commenting on the injuries, the Lancet reported that, "Contrary to the popular opinion, the body had not been hacked, but dexterously cut up; the joints have been opened, and the bones neatly disarticulated, even the complicated joints at the ankle and the elbow, and it is only at the articulations of the hip-joint and shoulder that the bones have been sawn through.“
A further part of the body was found on September 15, a piece of the right arm, and this was picked up near Hungerford bridge.
A verdict of ”Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown“ was reached by the jury. The government offered a reward of 200 pounds, and a free pardon to any accomplice who could lead them to the actually murderer. No one came forward, no arrests were made, and the case remained unsolved.
By September 21st the unknown woman’s remains were buried at Battersea cemetery.
~~
Very little is known about the female body found in the Thames at Putney (London Borough of Wandsworth, south-west London), not far to the west of Battersea.
The News of the World of June 14 1874 reported that the headless and limbless (except one leg) torso was conveyed to Fulham Union Workhouse. At the inquest, Dr. E.C. Barnes, surgeon, stated that the body had been divided at the spinal column, and had been decomposed in lime before being dumped into the Thames.
Despite what appeared to be an obvious murder, the jury returned an open verdict. Like the similar crime the previous year, no further evidence was presented, and both crimes become lost to history.

Crucial Stats:
Name: Alexander Stirling Scarlet
Age: Late thirties, born April 17th
Height: Five feet nine inches
Weight: One hundred and forty pounds
Hair: Dirty blonde
Eyes: Blue
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Sexuality: Demisexual, grey-aromantic
Religion: Agnostic
Relevant biographical information:
Born in Herne Hill, London, England
Orphaned after his parents, Paul and Claudia Scarlet, were killed in a car accident. Raised by his neglectful high society aunt, Isolde Blackburne.
Graduated from Oxford with a degree in literature and spent years afterward trying unsuccesfully to get his own novels and short stories published. Constantly rejected for “unoriginality.”
Immigrated to America and started his criminal career at the age of twenty-five. Lasted two and a half years as a prominent Gotham rogue before having a glass display case dropped on his head during an altercation with Batgirl (Barbara Gordon).
Spent a year in Arkham Asylum after his hospital stay, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Was the victim of medical malpractice at the hands of Dr. Penelope Young, who would repeatedly verbally abuse him during psychiatric sessions and deliberately give him wrong medication doses. Also bullied cruelly by Jonathan Crane, who took pleasure in “breaking him by talking.”
Burned the palms of his hands in a self-harm attempt to the point of permanent nerve damage during his criminal days. Now wears leather gloves to cover them.
Found work at Gotham Academy a year and a half after his release with a clean bill of health and rehabilitation funding. Now works there as a professor of English and drama.
Married Lydia Scarlet nee Limpet after five years of living with her. Now has four children with her—Isabella, Catherine, Amelia, and Jeremy.
Also considers Hayden Ayala and Samuel Robonico as part of the family, as well as Lydia’s extended family on her adopted father’s side.
Good friends with Kira Drake, Elsie Khalii, and Jervis Tetch. Frenemies-leaning-toward-friends with Edward Nygma. Sitcom nemesis of Edgar Heed. Sworn enemy of Jonathan Crane, Batman, and Gotham’s police force.
Still keeps his Men of Letters (his henchpeople from his crime days) as backup if he needs it. Printer’s Devil is the sniper, Typesetter is the medic, Pressman is the muscle and electrician, and Footnote is the gopher and undercover agent.
Does not get along at all well with Headmaster Hammer and will go out of his way to disboey him behind his back. Still very protective of the Academy’s students and trusts the members of Team Detective implicitly—he’s basically the Giles to their Scooby Gang.
Personal trivia:
Can whistle and read music, but not sing.
Always makes a little tutting or “oh!” sound when he’s annoyed, usually accompanied by rolling his eyes. Also makes a lot of “thinking noises” when he speaks and talks with his hands. Almost never uses slang.
Impeccable posture and a cat-like sense of cleanliness.
A very skilled gadgeteer as well as his eidetic memory and speedreading skills. Incredibly well-read and inventive.
Has terrible eyesight, but refuses to wear thick bulky glasses as a professor.
Never loses an opportunity to whip out a pithy literary quote, but gets very frustrated when people misquote things and will instantly correct them.
Has an abysmal sleep schedule and will normally stay awake into the wee hours of the morning. Very restless sleeper who tosses and turns a lot.
Owns three cats–two long-haired tuxedo cats named Ernest and Hercule and one ginger tabby named Lloyd. Also gets along surprisingly well with birds.
Is liable to consume himself with work or fly into a screaming rage over the smallest slight during manic episodes, but usually sits at his desk without moving from it or speaking during depressive ones. Extremely dilligent about taking his medications because he despises losing control.
Has post-traumatic stress reponses to prolonged discussion of Arkham Asylum or anything that reminds him of his time there.
Is the absolute living embodiment of the Superiority/Inferiority Complex and delights in being cheerfully passive-aggressive.
Favorite drink is English breakfast tea or Arabian coffee. Favorite food is roast chicken. Also snacks on peanuts when he’s anxious. Favorite sweet is cherry Danishes.
Has a specfic cafe in the academic district he and Lydia like to order from.
Often underweight as a child because of his aunt’s ill treatment.
Favorite books are Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, and The Time Machine.
Favorite movies are the original Universal Horror canon.
Favorite singer is Nat King Cole.
Disdains a lot of modern rogues and bemoans the needless violence and lack of “class”.
Can be a bit classist and elitist, especially in academic settings.
Walks everywhere if he can help it, only drives if he’s heading out of Gotham altogether.
Scrimped and saved to rent a small cabin for himself, Lydia, and the children whenever they need to get out of the city’s hustle and bustle.
A fairly strict, but still patient and fair teacher as well as parent.
First met Lydia in Blackgate Penitentiary after he was arrested the first time–she kicked his ass in a game of chess.
Once tried to discover Dream of the Endless’s secrets and ended up getting knocked out for a week of nightmares for his trouble. Is very cautious about magic ever since.
Very overly protective of the things and people he loves, tends to be distrustful on their behalf.
Owns basically no casual clothes, always dresses in his Academy attire (the tweed jackets and dress slacks, not the pleather Bookworm suit).
Very self-conscious about his thinning hair and thus will not take off his hat unless it’s for someone he trusts.
Likewise doesn’t like to be touched unless it’s by someone he trusts, will swat your hand away otherwise.
Usually shows verbal affection more often than physical affection. Can be extremely emotionally constipated, especially when he’s just starting to forge a relationship with someone.
Greatest fear is alienating his loved ones or making them afraid of him.
