Fragrance's Christmas Dissociate into the TV List
I'm quite fond of Christmas movies, and Christmas in general, and I am currently rewatching a few favorites.
Dickensian - a BBC 10-episode miniseries that intertwines the stories of Dickens characters from multiple books, including A Christmas Carol, Bleak House, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, and The Old Curiosity Shop. It turns Mr. Marley's demise in A Christmas Carol into a murder mystery and Inspector Bucket from Bleak House is on the case. It's basically fanfiction of the most wonderful kind. And it's the BBC. They can basically do no wrong.
The Man Who Invented Christmas - a movie about Charles Dickens writing A Christmas Carol. The situation that led to it, what inspired him, how he worked down to the wire... Based on true events, it features Dickens interacting with various characters from A Christmas Carol. They appear in his mind's eye and sit with him in his study, have full-on conversations with him, and even follow him around and call to him from outside his windows! I'm sure many a writer has often felt the same way. I, for one, very often have at least three hobbits following me around. Frodo and Marigold, for instance, are often in the back seat of my car doing very untoward things, and Sam's often bringing me tea and conversing with me about gardening, his adventures, and his relationship with Mr. Frodo.
A Christmas Carol 2009, with Jim Carrey - a standard retelling of the classic tale, but with a lot of flying over 19th century London. For some reason, it's my favorite of the many cinematic versions of the story.

Thames Mysteries of 1873 and 1874
On September 5, 1873, at 6:30 am, a galley of the Thames Police was on patrol near the Battersea Pier (at the London Borough of Wandsworth, south west London). One of the three policemen on board, Constable Richard Fane picked out of the water the left quarter of a women's trunk from the mud on the banks of the Thames river. The remains were taken to the Clapham and Wandsworth Union Workhouse, where Dr. Felix Charles Kempster, the divisional surgeon, saw it, and pronounced it to be the portion of a body which had not been in the water more than twelve hours.
The police at once commenced a minute search of the river, but the next discovery was made by Henry Locke, a policeman in the employ of the South-Western Railway Company, who, without knowing of the previous discovery, found the right side of the trunk off Brunswick Wharf, near the Nine Elms station (North-East Battersea). This part corresponded with the first part found, and the headless trunk, it was apparent, had been severed with a very sharp knife, and a saw had also been used. Inspector Starkey of the Thames Police take custody of these remains. Soon after a portion of the lungs was found by Inspector Charles Marley, of the Thames Police, under an arch of old Battersea bridge, and the other part near the Battersea railway pier. The search was now continued for the other parts of the body, and on September 6 the face, with the scalp of a woman attached, was found by PC John Parker off Limehouse (London Borough of Tower Hamlets, East London). It was evident at a glance that the murderer or murderers had taken revolting precautions to prevent identification, for the nose was cut from the face, but still hung attached to the upper lip. There was the mark of a bruise on the right temple, evidently caused by a blunt instrument, and this blow, it is thought, was the cause of death. On September 9 two more portions of the same body were found, the right thigh being picked up in the river off Woolwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich, south-east London), and the right shoulder, with part of the arm, off Greenwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich, southeast London), the latter part being smeared with tar. The left foot, measuring ten inches and three-quarters in length, and ten inches across the instep, has also been picked up near the bank of the Regent's Canal, off Rotherhithe, and the right fore-arm near the Albert Embankment. On the advice of the Acting Chief Surgeon, Metropolitan Police, Dr. Thomas Bond, the corpse was "built up" by sewing together the parts by Dr. Edward Hayden, the medical officer of the large union workhouse where it lied preserved in spirits of wine. The face was more of a challenge, as the nose and chin had been cut off, and the head had been scalped. The skin on the face of the victim was fitted "as naturally as possible" over a butcher's block. Even though this early attempt at forensic reconstruction was carried out with "ingenuity and skill," the body would only be recognizable by those "intimately acquainted with the physical characteristics of the deceased."
Dr. Kempster determined that the victim was very likely around 40 years old, stout, coarse skin, with short, thin black hair. One feature they hoped would make identification easier was s burn scar on her left breast. Dozens of people who were looking for female middle-aged family members passed through to view the body, but no one could be sure that it was who they were looking for. Anyone the police believed had reason to see the remains were first shown a photograph.
The Lancet reported that “There is very strong evidence that the woman met with a violent death, and that in the first instance severe blows were dealt on the right side of the head with some heavy, blunt instrument; but, in the absence of the skull, it is impossible to determine positively the extent of the injury. It would appear that after the victim had thus been stunned the body was immediately deprived of all its blood by a section of the carotid arteries in the neck, since there were no clots in any of the veins of the body. The tissues were, moreover, divided while they still preserved their vital contractibility, for, according to the evidence of Mr. Kempster, the muscles in the portions of the body that were first examined were fresh and retracted, so that death must have occurred within a very few hours.”
Commenting on the injuries, the Lancet reported that, "Contrary to the popular opinion, the body had not been hacked, but dexterously cut up; the joints have been opened, and the bones neatly disarticulated, even the complicated joints at the ankle and the elbow, and it is only at the articulations of the hip-joint and shoulder that the bones have been sawn through."
A further part of the body was found on September 15, a piece of the right arm, and this was picked up near Hungerford bridge.
A verdict of "Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown" was reached by the jury. The government offered a reward of 200 pounds, and a free pardon to any accomplice who could lead them to the actually murderer. No one came forward, no arrests were made, and the case remained unsolved.
By September 21st the unknown woman's remains were buried at Battersea cemetery.
~~
Very little is known about the female body found in the Thames at Putney (London Borough of Wandsworth, south-west London), not far to the west of Battersea.
The News of the World of June 14 1874 reported that the headless and limbless (except one leg) torso was conveyed to Fulham Union Workhouse. At the inquest, Dr. E.C. Barnes, surgeon, stated that the body had been divided at the spinal column, and had been decomposed in lime before being dumped into the Thames.
Despite what appeared to be an obvious murder, the jury returned an open verdict. Like the similar crime the previous year, no further evidence was presented, and both crimes become lost to history.

A Christmas Story
December 24th 1902
The snow was falling on Leman Street in hundred flakes on the floor, the pavement turned into a white carpet. It was cold outside, too cold for a walk in the town. The perfect weather for the Christmas Eve.
But inside of all the houses, the warm of the fire of the fireplaces, as well as the cheerfulness of the inhabitants won against Winter.
Edmund was crouched in front of the fireplace replacing the embers to keep the living-room warm. Then he glanced behind his shoulder: his daughter Matilda was sitting on the sofa looking after her two children who were playing together with Artemis, Edmund's dog; while Drum was helping the others in the kitchen after the Christmas dinner. The Inspector smiled tenderly at the sweet scene in front of him; he used to be alone the rest of the year, his only companies were his policers teammates and his dog. Matilda lived his own life now with her husband and children, and he cruely missed her. Having her in his house warmed his heart and brought him a kind of happiness he needed.
He came back at his bask when a child's voice cried out :
“Mommy ! He bothers me !”
It was Lucie who tried to push her little brother away, who wanted to climb in her laps.
“Aaaw Sweetheart, Lewis just wants to play with you.” Matilda said gently, resting her hand in the palm.
The baby was now trying to grab his big sister's hair with his pudgy fist covered with cookies crumbs gurgling. Lucie looked at her mother with pleading eyes. “But Mommy ! He's all dirty !” then she glanced hostly at her brother : “Go ! Leave me alone !”
“Lewis's still a baby, Lucie” Matilda sighed smiling, “you've to learn to be patient with him.”
“Your Mom's right Pumpkin.” Edmund said finishing his bask, then he lifted up to come near the others on the sofa. “You know, you were like him when you'd his age. You always wanted to climb in everybody's laps and you used to snivel when no one paid attention to you.” he added chuckling, and gave some pats in Artemis' flank who's claiming her master's caresses.
Lucie blinked at him : “No ! Wrong !” she cried out, huffing.
Matilda lent towards her daughter and booped her nose : “Oh yes little Miss, and believe me that you're the most adorable little crybaby I could ever know.” she said teasing her.
Edmund smirked at the young woman : “Lucie took exactly after her Mom after all.”
Matilda sharply glanced at her father, turning bright crimson. “Father !” she exclaimed, laughing despite herself.
“Aaaw c'mon Buttercup ! Your dear old father can tease you sometimes, huh ?” Edmund said tickling his daughter and kissing her cheek. Matilda and her children laughed.
The big clock rang suddenly : 21.pm. Lucie sharply got up, a wide smile in her lips.
“It's reading time ! It's reading time !” She cried up loudly jumping.
Lewis, who didn't understood his sister’s sudden enthusiasm, was a little frightened and ran up into his grand-father's legs on all fours.
“Well, well, there's a little girl really excited, isn't she ?” a voice asked amused – Drum's.
Lucie ran into her father with the same enthusiam : “Daddy ! Right in time for the reading.” she said importantly.
Drum chuckled. “I wouldn't miss this part of the evening for nothing in the world.” he said stroking gently his daughter's golden hair. “But don't you think it'll be better if we wait everybody ?”
Then, Edmund grabbed Lewis in his arms and declared : “While waiting for the others coming, I propose Lewis chooses the book because it's his first Christmas with us.” Everybody agreed, so the Inspector moved towards the library in the background of the room, where a lot of books were tidy perfectly on the shelves. “Alright little man, which book will we read tonight ?” he asked to the baby.
Lewis were amazed by all the colored books, he moved his eyes from left to right but didn't know where to give head. Suddenly, a book attracted his attention : a faded pink torned big book, put in a corner of the library. “Bah !” he cooed showing the book with his small finger.
Edmund grabbed the dusty book, then glanced at his grandson smiling genuinely. “Excellent choice.” he whispered to him.
The cover of the book was faded of his original color but we could still the title : “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. The Inspector watched it not without some emotions. It was Matilda's favorite book when she was still a child. He knew the story by heart because he had to read it each years at this time. He felt his heart tighted with emotions.
Edmund came back near the sofa where Matilda was always sitting. “Your son has good tastes for reading.” he said showing the book to his daughter. The young woman gasped grabbing it delicately to watch it more carefully.
“ You … You kept it ?!” she asked amazed, her eyes couldn't leave the cover.
“Why ? What did you think ?” Edmund asked sitting down next to her, Lewis on his laps. “I would never get rid of a book, even less this one, Sweetie.”
Matilda stroked the cover by the end of her fingers feeling the emotion in her heart. Drum leant to see the book better. “It's incredible you still have this kind of book at home. I heard it was one of the first edition, isn't it ?” he said elbowing in the edge of the sofa.
Edmund glanced at his son-in-law smiling : “Well I bought this book when Matilda was only two, few days before Christmas. Since this year, she never wanted to read another book that this one. I don't know why.” he said chuckling.
Drum chuckled too : “Well, I'm pretty sure the story of Ebenezer Scrooge touched her from the bottom of her little heart.” he said teasing his wife, then giving a quick kiss in her lips. Matilda stuck out her tongue at him. “If only you understood the morality of the story, you thought exactly like me.” she said teasing her husband at her turn.
The young man shamed to pout : “Excuse me my dear wife, but I know the story !” he said pretending indignation. “It's just … I never read the book.” he finally admitted sighing.
Matilda snickered : “So tonight, you'll get the chance to hear it.”
Edmund looked at the pair teasing each other. He smirked, finding them adorable. He knew perfectly that his Matilda always won the argues against Drum, which satisfied the proud father. Finally, all the family members arrived in the living-room taking sits; Drum sat down in a chair, Lucie was confortably installed in her mother's laps while Lewis was still on his grand-father's. Artemis, as for her, lied down next to Matilda panting. The fire crackled ardently in the fireplace. Everybody was ready for the reading time, so Edmund opened solemnly the book and began to read :
“Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge’s name was good upon ‘Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. [...]”
For the RS Writing Club on the Christmas theme, I should post it yesterday but unfortunately I wasn’t home, so I post it tonight sorry.
So there is the “old” Inspector Edmund Reid reunited with his family for the Xmas Eve. No need to talk about Drum and Tilda, so let me introduce the kids : The little girl was mentioned in the very end of the show, but I don’t remember if we know her name; so I decided to name her Lucie (it’ll be canon in my verse). Lucie is the daughter and first child of Tilda and Drum, who took a lot after her Mother’s personality. Aaand the little boy in Edmund’s laps is Lewis (guess why I named it like that XD), first son and last child of the pair. He’s more close of his Grandad, quiet and sometimes coward.
The drawing is kinda mess, with a lot of mistakes : I literally fucked Matilda’s hands, the kids look older than they should be (Lewis is still a baby who isn’t in his first year yet, and Lucie is around 3) and the plaid is a bit odd. But like it -^^’’-
Ah ! And the dog on the corner is Artemis, a female great dane Edmund adopted to fill his loneliness (she’s still a big puppy there).
It will deal with my headcanon verse I named “Modern Times” which takes place after the event of the show (beginning in the 1900). Sackson Family : The Beginning of an Era” deals with this verse too (it’s a kind of “Spin-off”). It will focalise in some characters in particular, as well as their families.
Hope you like it guys ^^

Christmas Reads for Adults
by Dr. Sorcha Fogarty
Home for Christmas - Debbie Macomber
A prolific Christmas writer, Debbie Macomber never fails to provide a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas story. A tale of a marriage gone awry and the desire for reconciliation, Home for Christmas is a gentle and heart-warming reminder that it’s never easy to leave behind the ones we truly love. Factor in a crowded train on Christmas Eve, a snowstorm which leaves a group of strangers stranded, and you have a perfect setting for an exploration of friendship and love under challenging conditions. Ultimately, Macomber is an expert at reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas.
The Christmas Train – David Baldacci
Something a little bit different for the festive period, Baldacci’s thriller sees disillusioned journalist Tom Langdon in a frenzy get from Washington to Los Angeles in time for Christmas. Forced to take the train across the country, Baldacci’s protagonist embarks on a journey of self-discovery and rude awakenings, mysterious goings-on and thrilling adventures. At the core of the book, there is, however, the uplifting message that second chances are possible, and just when we may think all is lost, we are afforded the opportunity to fulfill our deepest hopes and dreams.
A Christmas Party - Georgette Heyer
Heyer presents us with a clever and daring Christmas crime with this compelling story. When a lively and varied assortment of guests at a festive holiday house party discover there is a killer in their midst, enter Inspector Hemingway of Scotland Yard, who must navigate the investigation. When their universally reviled host is found dead in a room locked from the inside, suspicion is the dish of the day.
Hercule Poirot's Christmas - Agatha Christie
First published in the UK on the 19th December 1938, Christie’s Christmas story is a great choice for an escapist read. The novel is considered a “locked room mystery”, and it is a quintessential Agatha Christie detective tale, consisting of a country house, a long list of possible suspects, and Poirot’s brilliant deductive skills. As the Lee family gather for a reunion, their celebrations are shattered by the discovery of the village’s Scrooge-like character, dead in an upstairs room of their house on Christmas Eve. Cue Poirot, who is burdened with the unenviable task of unearthing the perpetrator when everyone seems to have their own reason for hating the murdered man.
Christmas in the Snow - Karen Swan
Swan’s Christmas story is set in the murky world of hedge funds and located between London and Zermatt, Switzerland. Allegra Fischer, career-focused and determined to climb the corporate ladder in a male-dominated industry, is poised to close the biggest deal of her career when she meets an attractive stranger. Long accustomed to closing off her emotions and steadfast in her professional ambitions, Allegra cannot afford to lose focus, but romance is vying for her attention, and she struggles to keep it at bay. Further complicated by a shocking discovery, Allegra finds herself enmeshed in old secrets and long-buried desires. A glamorous and enthralling tale of high stakes and forbidden love, Christmas in the Snow is an irresistible festive page-turner.
Stella’s Christmas Wish – Kate Blackadder
It may be a timeworn tale: a girl returns to her hometown, bumps into an old flame, and tension ensues. However, with Stella’s Christmas Wish, Kate Blackadder presents us with immensely likeable characters, an uncomplicated but engrossing romance plot, and a fast-paced, thoroughly enjoyable story. Uprooted from her life in London and back in her childhood home of the Scottish borders, Stella is soon faced with relationships which have lain dormant for years. Similar in style to the work of Kate Hewitt and Rosamunde Pilcher, Stella’s Christmas Wish is a romantic, feel-good Christmas read that is sure to warm your heart during this frosty season.
A Dog Named Christmas - Greg Kincaid
Greg Kincaid’s 2008 novel A Dog Named Christmas is an uplifting, inspirational read. Taking place over several weeks, the plot traces the way a wonderful dog transforms for the better the lives of the family that adopts him – and the way an intellectually disabled young man demonstrates the depths of his affinity for animals. A wonderful story full of emotion, Kincaid’s tender tale illustrates the enormous good that can arise from even the smallest act of kindness.
One More For Christmas - Sarah Morgan
A sparkling tale of Christmas redemption, bestselling author Sarah Morgan’s One More for Christmas is comfort reading at its best. The novel follows sisters Samantha and Ella and their relationship with their mother Gayle. Estranged from their mother for five years, an accident serves as the impetus for the family to repair their fractured relationship. The girls and their mother take a house in the Scottish Highlands for Christmas, and the ensuing story is one of second chances, reflection, and renewal. A perfect festive read, Morgan is adept at capturing the warmth of friendship and the value of family bonds.
Round About the Christmas Tree – Becky Brown (ed.)
Round About the Christmas Tree is the perfect Christmas book, representing all facets of the festive season. This anthology shows what an inspiration Christmas was for so many famous writers; whether it be a time for celebration, for family, or a chance to remember those in hardship. Filled with heartwarming stories from Charles Dickens and E. Nesbit, comic fun from G. K Chesterton and Saki, touching whimsy from Hans Christian Anderson and even crimes to solve from Arthur Conan Doyle, there is something for everyone in this wonderful festive collection.
A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens
First published in 1843, no Christmas book list would be complete without acknowledging this enduring classic from Charles Dickens. Essentially, the story centres on a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation resulting from a supernatural visit from his deceased business partner Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. Dickens’ sources for the tale are many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales. Scrooge’s transformation serves as a reminder that nothing is constant and change is always possible, even in the most unlikely of circumstances. Always a pleasure to read, A Christmas Carol captures the heart of the holiday season like no other story.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 25/11/2019
Good Morning #realdreamchasers. Here is your daily news cap for Monday, November 25th, 2019. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
CAUTION ON ACQUISITIONS – Government has been cautioned by the Opposition People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PdP) about the manner in which it wields its power of compulsory acquisition of private property. In fact, spokesperson for the party, Reverend Paul Leacock, said governments must ensure that when such power is exercised it is unquestionably for a good national purpose. According to him, justice must be seen by the citizens to be done and power must never appear to the citizens to be abusive by the state. Addressing the matter of compensation of owners of properties acquired under the Land Acquisition Act during a press conference at the Office of the Opposition in the Parliament Building yesterday, Leacock said anytime there is a compulsory acquisition it should be just. (DN)
DEATH LEAVES MOTHER IN SHOCK – Margaret Gill is still in shock that her only son Mark Gill is Barbados’ latest road fatality – the tenth for the year. The 27-year-old, of Strathclyde Crescent, St Michael, died on the scene following an accident around 12:55 a.m. yesterday along the Mighty Grynner Highway. Police reported that the vehicle Gill was driving collided with a tree. When a Sunday Sun team visited his mother yesterday afternoon, she was surrounded by family and friends. (DN)
GRIEVING MOM SAYS MARK GILL WAS A ‘GOOD GUY’ – Margaret Gill, the grieving mother of 27-year-old Mark Gill who lost his life in a vehicle accident just after midnight, has described her only child as a “good guy” who was multi-talented. “I am trying to be brave. I am really trying. But I guess when reality kicks in I will feel my little punches. So far, I haven’t eaten anything for the day and I don’t feel like eating. I feel like I lose weight already and it is just a couple hours since he has passed. “He is great. He is gifted. He can pick down a car, he can sand it down, he can paint it, he can do anything with a car. He used to work with his dad [Lance Gill] at Auto Repairs Centre [located in Strathclyde]. He just went for his truck licence on Wednesday so he could buy a truck,” Gill said, as she spoke proudly of the young man who she said had a bright future ahead. As she reflected on her son’s life outside of their Strathclyde, Bank Hall, St Michael home, Gill said Mark, who attended Charles F Broome Primary and The St Michael School, studied Information Technology and Business Management at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Mark was the sole occupant of the motor car, a black Mitsubishi Evolution, registration XD92, which was travelling in a northerly direction along the highway from the area of Holborn circle towards Walmer Lodge. The vehicle reportedly veered off the carriageway to its near side and collided with a tree. Mark died on the spot. Ambulance personnel and fire rescue personnel responded to the scene. “Last night was not easy. One of his friends called and told me that he got in an accident. I said ‘he hurt?’ and he start to cry. So, when he started to cry, I told him I coming there now. I grabbed the keys and I got in the car. I got in the car and I don’t know how I get down there. I was just devastated just to hear that he got into an accident. “Then, when we got there, we saw the police got the road cordoned off is when I realized that something serious has happened. I say ‘somebody dead’. I and my husband sit down and waited until the police called us, a Rasta guy gave us some water,” she said. The mother recalled that the last time she saw Mark was around 6:30 p.m. on Friday when he left home to go for a haircut just a short distance away. She said he had also told her he was going to get something to eat and eventually hang out with his friends, as they usually do on Friday nights. Mark often spoke about fixing up the plantation house in St Lucy where he intended to live, his mother said. He had also decided that he wanted to go on a European cruise with his family next year. Margaret said her son, who always talked about visiting Europe, was excited about exploring Germany. She said those plans to travel have to be now pushed aside, to make funeral arrangements. “Sorry he had to go so soon. He had all of these plans on travelling. But everything is in God’s hands is all I could say because we always pray. God knows best. Everybody say they would meet at Christmas, but I guess there will be one person missing. It was a lot of fun with him around at Christmas,” Gill said. She said while the tragedy has shaken the entire family, her husband who worked with his son just yesterday evening, was finding it especially difficult to come to terms with the loss. (BT)
MURDER #43 – A man was shot and killed late last night at Eastbourne, St Philip. Police spokesman, acting inspector Rodney Inniss, confirmed the shooting death. Lawmen are on the scene conducting investigations. This is Barbados’ 43rd murder for 2019. The man who was shot and killed late last night has been identified as Denzil Obed Scarboro, alias Blue, of Farm Road, St Philip. The 29-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene at Eastbourne in the same parish, an area locally known as Vietnam. Scarboro was at a home in the district when, according to police, an unknown masked man with a firearm followed him as he entered through the side door. An altercation ensued and shots were fired. The victim fell to the floor and the assailant fled the scene. The incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. and is the 43rd murder of the year. Police investigations are continuing.(DN)
DCCA ADVISES NOT TO USE ROMAINE LETTUCE FROM CALIFORNIA - The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) is advising Barbadians not to consume romaine lettuce from California. In a statement issued through the Barbados Government Information Service this evening DCCA said, “ As the agency under the Ministry of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce charged with the protection of consumers, the DCCA is, therefore, advising all consumers not to use any romaine lettuce from Salinas, California,” as they reported that they are investigating an outbreak of illnesses caused by E. coli O157:H7 in the United States. E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium which can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhoea and abdominal cramps for about two to eight days (three to four days, on average after being exposed to the organism). Most persons recover within a week, but some may develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs supports the statements by the US FDA and FSIS, and is, therefore, recommending that consumers here in Barbados: Avoid eating romaine lettuce and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce from the Salinas in California; Read their labels carefully and return any of the affected lettuce to the retail outlet from which it was purchased; If ordering salad which contains romaine lettuce at a restaurant or at a salad bar they should ascertain whether the romaine lettuce came from the Salinas, California. If it did, or if it is not known, it should not be eaten. Moreover, restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell romaine lettuce which was harvested from Salinas, California. If information about the source is not available, it should not be served or sold. (BGIS)
POLYCLINIC PHARMACIES TO CLOSE EARLY ON TUESDAY – All pharmacies in polyclinics and outpatient clinics will close at noon on Tuesday, November 26, to facilitate staff training. The Ministry of Health and Wellness has advised that pharmacies located in the polyclinics, which offer the Extended Hours Service will reopen at 5 p.m. on that day. These are the Maurice Byer Polyclinic, Station Hill, St Peter; the Randal Phillips Polyclinic, Oistins, Christ Church; and the Winston Scott Polyclinic, Jemmotts Lane, St Michael. The Ministry apologizes for any inconvenience the early closure may cause. (BGIS)
FOGGING SCHEDULE NOVEMBER 25 – 29 - The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ fogging programme continues this week in a number of parishes. The team will return to St Philip on Tuesday, November 26, to fog Culpepper Development, Hillview Road, Marley Vale, Ragged Point, Sealy Hill, St. Catherine, Duncans, Beulah Road, Sandy Hill, Sandy Hill Development and surrounding areas. On Wednesday, November 27, areas to be sprayed in St John are Rosegate, Lovell Road, Codrington Road, Massiah Street, Stewart Hill, Conset Bay, College Land, Sargeant Street and neighbouring districts. FOUR Ps PROFIT SPARTAN – Preparation, practice, planning and performance by multiple players were key planks in Spartan’s winning the Barbados Cricket Association’s Elite Division title this season. Long-standing coach Dave Marshall made this declaration after the Parkites defeated Wildey by 204 runs yesterday to clinch their first top-league crown since 2010, when they shared the title with Sagicor Life UWI, and their 21st overall. “The whole mindset of the players this season was completely different. They were more focused on winning the Cup this year. They were more disciplined at practice and they put in a lot of hard work and we planned well,” Marshall told NATION SPORT after the triumph. (DN)
COACH: PRIDE CAN DO BETTER – BARBADOS PRIDE topped Zone A of the Colonial Insurance Super50 Cup but coach Emmerson Trotman feels there is room for improvement. After completing the group stage with six wins from their eight matches with an impressive seven-wicket victory over Canada at the Conaree Cricket Centre in St Kitts and Nevis on Saturday, Trotman stopped short of giving his team full marks. “I would grade my team at eight out of ten. We lost a couple of games that we should not have lost. We have got to understand that when we have a team under pressure, we have to dominate and complete the job,” Trotman told CWI Media. (DN)

Underbelly Productions have today announced full casting for a brand new production of Clarke Peters’ Olivier Award-winning and Tony-Award nominated musical, Five Guys Named Moe. The production will open on 14th September 2017 in a new temporary theatre in Marble Arch, London.
Edward Baruwa will play Nomax and the ‘Moes’ will be played by: Ian Carlyle (Four-Eyed Moe), Dex Lee (Know Moe), Idriss Kargbo (Little Moe), Timothy Martin (Big Moe) and Emile Ruddock (Eat Moe).
Underbelly have also released the first look at how the inside of the new Marble Arch Theatre will look. Specifically designed for the production will be reminiscent of 1940s New Orleans Jazz clubs, occupying the whole space. There will be cabaret table seating in the centre of the space with a drinks table service.
In addition to the theatre, there will be a connecting foyer designed in the style of a New Orleans courtyard with hanging atmospheric foliage, festoon lighting, a beautiful bespoke bar, a performance area for a jazz trio and concession stands selling popcorn, sweets, snacks and merchandise as well as a cloakroom area.
Five Guys Named Moe was first seen at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in 1990, it transferred to the West End and played for four years, subsequently playing on Broadway from 1992. Clarke Peters’ career defining musical features the irresistible hits of trailblazing ‘King of the Jukebox’ Louis Jordan, including Early In The Morning, Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby, Choo Choo Ch’Boogie and Saturday Night Fish Fry. The soundtrack of soul, blues, gospel and early r ‘n’ b is performed on stage by a live band.
The production, which is to be directed by Peters himself, is currently booking from 29 August to 25 November 2017, with an Opening Night on 14 September.
Five Guys Named Moe will be directed by Clarke Peters (The Wire, Treme, Person of Interest, Porgy and Bess, The Ice Man Cometh) with musical staging and choreography by Andrew Wright (Half a Sixpence, Singin’ in the Rain, Guys and Dolls), inspired by Charles Augins’ original choreography, set and costume design by takis (Side Show, In The Heights, Hairspray, The Good Person of Sichuan), lighting design by Philip Gladwell (The James Plays, Cymbeline, Trainspotting, After Miss Julie, Hairspray), sound design by Ben Harrison (Cabaret, Dreamboats and Petticoats, Dancing in the Streets, The King & I, Starlight Express, Blood Brothers, Soul Sister) and musical supervision from Steve Hill (Fame, RENT, The House That Nat Built, Bent, Hair).
[See image gallery at http://ift.tt/1FpwFUw] Cameron Mackintosh said: “I am really thrilled that Underbelly are producing a brand new production of Five Guys Named Moe in London later this year. It’s a show that brought fun and joy to audiences in the West End for many years so it’s great to see its return for its 25th Anniversary. I am particularly excited that this new production is being staged in a Spiegeltent theatre specifically tailored for Five Guys so that Underbelly’s unique style will give audiences and the show a special intimate experience which will definitely make it the best party in town – a party which I’m delighted to support Underbelly in throwing.”
Clarke Peters said: “It’s a rare and wonderful thing to have the chance to direct a show that not only you have created but also performed in. It’s a show that is very close to my heart and soul and is so much of who I am. It’s an honour to return to it on its 25th Anniversary and reimagine the show in this new theatre space; one which is perfect for creating a closeness and dynamic energy between the story and the audience. Further to this it’s a treat to be working with a fantastic creative team and I can’t wait to transport audiences into the magical world of rhythm and blues. This rhythm will lift one and all from their blues!”

Underbelly Productions have today confirmed that a brand new production of Clarke Peters’ Olivier Award-winning and Tony-Award nominated musical, Five Guys Named Moe, will open in September 2017 in a brand new pop-up theatre for London in Marble Arch.
First seen at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in 1990, it transferred to the West End and played for four years, subsequently playing on Broadway from 1992. Clarke Peters’ (The Wire, Treme, Person of Interest, Porgy and Bess, The Ice Man Cometh) career defining musical features the irresistible hits of trailblazing ‘King of the Jukebox’ Louis Jordan, including Early In The Morning, Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby, Choo Choo Ch’Boogie and Saturday Night Fish Fry. The soundtrack of soul, blues, gospel and early r ‘n’ b is performed on stage by a live band.
The Marble Arch Theatre is being designed specifically for the production and will transport the audience back to the engrossing jazz bars of 1940s New Orleans. A unique, circular auditorium will ensure that the action take place all around the theatre and pre and post-performance drinks never felt so good in the theatre’s authentic 1940s foyer cocktail bar. The band is playing, the bourbon is flowing… come and join the party!
The production, which is to be directed by Peters himself and features the hits of jazz legend Louis Jordan, will have an initial booking period from 28 August to 25 November 2017, with an Opening Night on 14 September. Tickets go on sale today at 2pm.
Five Guys Named Moe will be directed by Clarke Peters with musical staging and choreography by Andrew Wright (Half a Sixpence, Singin’ in the Rain, Guys and Dolls), inspired by Charles Augins’ original choreography, set and costume design by takis (Side Show, In The Heights, Hairspray, The Good Person of Sichuan), lighting design by Philip Gladwell (The James Plays, Cymbeline, Trainspotting, After Miss Julie, Hairspray) and sound design by Ben Harrison (Cabaret, Dreamboats and Petticoats, Dancing in the Streets, The King & I, Starlight Express, Blood Brothers, Soul Sister).
Cameron Mackintosh said: “I am really thrilled that Underbelly are producing a brand new production of Five Guys Named Moe in London later this year.

Your lifes were difficult and cut short. You both were free at last… 🌼
Thames Mysteries of 1873 and 1874
On September 5, 1873, at 6:30 am, a galley of the Thames Police was on patrol near the Battersea Pier (at the London Borough of Wandsworth, south west London). One of the three policemen on board, Constable Richard Fane picked out of the water the left quarter of a women’s trunk from the mud on the banks of the Thames river.
The left foot, measuring ten inches and three-quarters in length, and ten inches across the instep, has also been picked up near the bank of the Regent’s Canal, off Rotherhithe, and the right fore-arm near the Albert Embankment. The skin on the face of the victim was fitted "as naturally as possible" over a butcher’s block. Even though this early attempt at forensic reconstruction was carried out with "ingenuity and skill,“ the body would only be recognizable by those "intimately acquainted with the physical characteristics of the deceased.”
Commenting on the injuries, the Lancet reported that, "Contrary to the popular opinion, the body had not been hacked, but dexterously cut up; the joints have been opened, and the bones neatly disarticulated, even the complicated joints at the ankle and the elbow, and it is only at the articulations of the hip-joint and shoulder that the bones have been sawn through.“
A further part of the body was found on September 15, a piece of the right arm, and this was picked up near Hungerford bridge.
A verdict of ”Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown“ was reached by the jury. The government offered a reward of 200 pounds, and a free pardon to any accomplice who could lead them to the actually murderer. No one came forward, no arrests were made, and the case remained unsolved.
By September 21st the unknown woman’s remains were buried at Battersea cemetery.
