Animated Trek will always rank higher in terms of confidence compared to the recent live action shows because of how it fully embraces all the silly quirks of this long running franchise.

I love how they spend the entire episode implying that Other Freeman was dead, only to reveal that she'd just been reassigned to Starbase 80 (and this is somehow even more devastating for Prime Freeman to learn)

New Lower Decks season! Just finished the second episode.
Both episodes are fine. But only fine. I appreciated the first episode a little more after seeing the second because I thought the alternates was an underused premise. But seeing the next episode, they do set up Boimler and Mariner's apparent character arcs. Boimler's alternate is someone he wants to be and Mariner's is who she wants to avoid. She wants to gain command but still be true to herself.
Still their plot in the second episode wasn't great.
Tendi's is good but doesn't entirely gel with s4 finale. (The deal wasn't "serve until you've paid for the ship") Then again s4 finale didn't really gel with D'Erica's first episode and it's nice to see her supportive of Tendi so a bit of a wash there.
The Rutherford/T'Lyn C-plot was super nice and cute combination we've not seen a lot of and that I very much approve of despite the simplicity of it.

Lower Decks 5x01 & 5x02 Review
It's a fresh beginning for the end of a beloved series, maman! A cosmic fissure leaves the crew of the Cerritos in a position of crappy self-reflection as they're forced to face the paths they could have taken in 5x01, "Dos Cerritos" -- Then, in 5x02, "Shades of Green", our crew is still reeling from what they know of their counterparts while Tendi reels from the consequences of making the blue orions canon! It's a fine how-do-ya-don't, maman!
Hosts: David C. Roberson Matthew Carroll
Note: This episode of Star Trek Universe continues Dave and Matt's ongoing journey discussing Star Trek as they have since they were 6 years old during the early '90s.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 1: Dos Cerritos
Good news: Lower Decks!
Bad news: Final season!
I'm so glad the show's back, it's so ridiculously good. And this episode opens with just so much of what works about this show and Star Trek as a whole, so it was nice to see. 9/10
I'm glad they did a multiverse thing. It's done a lot these days, but the show leaned into what works about multiverses. It kept the action confined to the cast and let them play off of themselves but slightly different. My favorite alternate take was definitely Captain Becky Freeman, Tawny Newsome killed it as a different Mariner, and it was a fun place to take the character.
I do think it's interesting that five seasons in Mariner's dark path is still losing her fun spirit and Boimler is still afraid of being unimportant. After all the development, they're still fundamentally where they were at the pilot with that perspective. The best thing I can say for Mariner is that she's worried about it for different reasons. There's an inevitability to it now for her as she takes on new recruits. I'm hoping we see more of her with new ensigns, that was a thing they started playing with last season but didn't run with to the extent I think they could have.
Tendi's subplot was great. I always love what the show does in terms of building out Orion culture, and while I would have preferred for her to just rejoin the crew already because this is the last season, I'm excited for space war Tendi. I also love that none of the Orions want to pirate and were looking to Tendi as a way out. It's always fun to have rebels against a culture that we know nothing about.
The Rutherford plotline was depressing as all hell and made total sense for the setup. I hope we get more resolution out of it in the next few episodes, but we are working with a very limited amount of screentime and I understand that choices have to be made. Speaking of, this episode was generally good at giving characters who weren't the focus something, even if they couldn't take up a whole arc to themselves. T'Lynn, Freeman, and Ransom are all good examples.
I'm glad this show is back and I hope they reverse course and keep it going. Alternatively, pull a Prodigy and get someone else to host it. Hell, it can't be that expensive, I'll do it*!
*offer not valid if it costs anything over, like, $20.

The Dos Cerrito timeline Guz never got to know Tendi after the events of Guzcomic, so she didn't know to return to Mellanus for medical treatment, so she didn't get GOT by the Schwil anomaly, so Surviving Schwil didn't happen. Similarly, since syndicate pirate and childhood friend Slamtha only found out where Guz was serving because of a job listing involving kidnapping Tendi, the alternate Guz and alternate Slamtha have never met again since she left Mellanus.
Basically, the Dos Cerrito timeline Guz is like our Guz, if i'd just like. left her the fuck alone to live her life. The boring life hiding away in the impulse engines that she always wanted.
The life where she didn't have to fall in love and get heartbroken over and over, the life where she didn't trade medical PTSD for planetary CPTSD. The life where she didn't... make friends who would actually want to spend time with her outside of her shift. Where she didn't find a new confidence, where she hasn't felt any form of intimacy for years, where she has looked almost exactly the same since the academy. The life where she never became a lieutenant junior grade--how did that happen?
Guz is still heartbroken over Tendi leaving. It's been bad days and good days and mad days, and throwing herself into her hobbies helped. But not ever even getting to know Tendi? That's so much more tragic.
Meanwhile alternate Guz is taking notes on her weirdly red PADD like "never enter a romantic relationship."
