so i was shooting the shit with the girlies in the group chat earlier and we were talking about the great outdoors, which, of course, are great to everyone...EXCEPT JERSEYKYLE who is basically a spoiled brat and pampered house cat and the only thing he thinks would be great about the outdoors...is if one of them would Fucking OPEN and take him back inside to civilization, cable tv and air conditioning.
like i think in the future when j.k. is working his full-time guidance counsellor job ( mr. bro, you are everything to me, baby ) they coerce him ( probably with pastries, paid vacation time and peer pressure ) into chaperoning the 5th grade weekend overnight camping fieldtrip, which ravenstanley marsh, of course, tells him is a great idea and it’d be fun to be out in the forest....It Was NAUGHT.
i am picturing him in like the big puffy orange jacket and like the grown up version of the green ushanka/ear muffs, shivering, snifflin, shrieking, crying about bears or red, blotchy, completely sunburned, totally bugging about bugs, tear-gassing everything with insecticide,
ready to End It All...
meanwhile future ravenstan, who i like to think went back to school, minored in wildlife, became an badass emergency travel veterinarian, is constantly on the move and on location ( and by that i mean like srsly impoverished third world countries, the amazon rainforest, rural new zealand where they desperately need vets, australia with all the shit that can fkn Kill You, buttfuck -40 siberia saving the polar bears )
working with non-profit wildlife protection and conservation efforts, has a little squad of hyper-vigilant zoomanitarian search and rescue emergency animal doctors that specifically head to dangerous places doing intense emt roadside surgeries, goth boy apothecary hot boy shit, foraging for supplies, making life-saving medicine out of tiny mushrooms and pieces of tree bark, running through fields with possible landmines in it to save endangered species, going full emo indistana jones adventuring and saving the world as captain stanet in no mans land w/ all his tattoos and piercings ( hero KING! )
...just pointing and laughing at teacher yersey when he finally gets thirty min of service on the helicopter flying out of snake island, brazil having nearly escaped having his flesh melted off by pit vipers doing important smart boy science research on different poisons and his fiancé calls him bc he got a bug bite and he thinks he's Cooked.
live laugh love ravesey style, everybody.

Chapter Twenty Three
Tumblr media
Forty-five minutes had passed since the chaos erupted at the restaurant when they finally arrived at the hospital. Eddie was being rushed into the MRI room while Carrie found herself accompanying Dr. Lewis into his office.
Dr. Lewis looked at Carrie with concern etched on his face. "Are you okay? I can only imagine how distressing it must have been for you to witness Eddie's behavior."
Carrie hesitated before answering. "I'm fine, thank you.”
Dr. Lewis leaned against his desk and asked, "Do you feel any better now? Any lingering headaches or episodes of collapsing?"
Carrie shook her head, her anxiety palpable. "No, I haven't."
"Good," Dr. Lewis said, retrieving a folder from his desk drawer. "I have something to show you regarding your blood test."
Carrie's heart pounded in her chest, a mix of anticipation and confusion swirling within her. She observed intently as Dr. Lewis delicately placed the folder on his desk, his hands moving with purpose. With a gentle touch, he opened the folder, revealing a piece of paper that he carefully positioned in front of her.
Her eyes widened as she took in the sight of the paper. It was not her blood test results, but rather a sample. Dr. Lewis began to explain, his voice calm and reassuring, "What I'm about to show you is what a normal blood test result looks like. It serves as a reference point, giving us a general understanding of a person's health. These results aid us in determining the appropriate treatments they require."
Carrie's confusion deepened as she glanced back and forth between the sample results and Dr. Lewis. Why was he showing her a sample blood test? Where were her own results? Her mind raced with questions, her anxiety growing with each passing moment.
She couldn't help but wonder if there was something wrong with her own blood test results, something that Dr. Lewis was hesitant to reveal. The anticipation in the room was palpable, and Carrie's heart pounded even harder, threatening to burst out of her chest.
"Now, I'm going to show you your blood test result," he declared, his voice filled with anticipation as he gently placed Carrie's blood test result on his desk, directly in front of her.
This was the moment she had been anxiously awaiting, hoping for some clarity. However, as her eyes scanned the document, a wave of bewilderment washed over her. She glanced at the sample result, then back at her own, only to find a single word glaring back at her relentlessly: Error.
"And what's truly perplexing is that we conducted the test not once, but twice, and the outcome remained unchanged," he disclosed, his voice laced with concern.
Carrie's heart sank as she processed Dr. Lewis' words. Error. How could this be? She had come to the doctor's office seeking answers, hoping that the blood test would provide some clarity to the mysterious symptoms that had been plaguing her for months. But now, it seemed like she was back at square one.
Dr. Lewis, a seasoned and respected physician, furrowed his brow as he studied Carrie's test results. He had seen his fair share of medical anomalies throughout his career, but this was a new level of perplexity. The fact that the test had been conducted twice, with the same inconclusive outcome, only deepened the mystery.
Carrie's mind raced with questions. What did this mean for her health? Was there something seriously wrong with her? She had been experiencing unexplained voices, persistent headaches, and a general feeling of malaise. Perhaps explained why she has powers of her own. She had hoped that the blood test would provide some answers, but instead, it had only added to the confusion.
Dr. Lewis could sense the growing anxiety in Carrie as she stared at her blood test results. "I understand that this is frustrating and confusing, Carrie," he said, his voice filled with empathy. "But we won't give up. We'll explore every avenue until we find the..."
Dr. Lewis's voice trailed off as Carrie's eyes fixated on her blood test results. The word "Error" seemed to glare back at her, mocking her. Suddenly, the words on the page began to shift and transform into an unfamiliar language that Carrie had grown accustomed to. But then, something even stranger happened. The words morphed into a haunting poem, one that only she could understand.
Tumblr media
The words painted a vivid yet enigmatic picture, leaving Carrie both intrigued and unsettled. Determined not to let the poem slip away, she committed it to memory, etching each line into the depths of her mind. It was as if the words held a secret, a key to unraveling the mysteries that surrounded her.
Suddenly, Dr. Lewis's voice broke through Carrie's thoughts. "Carrie? Are you alright? Do you understand what I'm saying?"
Carrie's mind was jolted back to reality as Dr. Lewis's voice pierced through the haze. She blinked, trying to gather her scattered thoughts. "I... I'm not sure," she stammered, her voice barely audible. "But something strange just happened. I think I heard a poem inside my head."
The air seemed to grow heavy with an unseen presence, as if the very atmosphere held its breath. A dark, feminine voice echoed in Carrie's mind, filled with bitterness and urgency. "No!" it urged vehemently.
Dr. Lewis's concern deepened as he observed Carrie's bewildered expression. "A poem? What kind of poem?" he inquired, his voice laced with curiosity and worry.
Carrie hesitated for a moment, unsure if she should share the haunting words that had invaded her thoughts. But the need to unravel this mystery outweighed her apprehension. With a trembling voice, she began to recite the verses that had materialized in her mind. Dr. Lewis listened intently, his brow furrowed in confusion as he tried to comprehend the enigmatic words.
"I've never encountered anything like this before," he admitted, his voice tinged with a mix of fascination and concern. "It's possible that the stress of the situation has triggered some sort of hallucination, but..."
The dark voice interrupted once more, its tone now laced with anger. "Don't tell him," it warned, its words dripping with urgency and defiance.
Carrie's heart raced, but she mustered the courage to speak up. "T-There are more verses," she managed to reply, her voice trembling. The weight of the unknown pressed upon her, and she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something far greater at play.
Dr. Lewis leaned in closer, his eyes fixed on Carrie's face. "Please, go on," he urged, his voice filled with a mix of anticipation and trepidation.
Carrie took a deep breath, her mind still reeling from the inexplicable experience. She closed her eyes, trying to recall the remaining verses that had invaded her thoughts. As she spoke, the words flowed from her lips, each line more haunting than the last.
"Black dawn, black moon, the Klyntar are to commune, their new life will start soon, their strength grows yet not immune. Black dawn, black moon, sounds weakens, make them hewn, falling down and feeling prune, not so peaceful or melodic tune."
As the final words escaped her lips, a shiver coursed through Carrie's body. The atmosphere in the room grew colder, and an unsettling silence settled over them. Dr. Lewis's eyes widened, fixated on Carrie, a mix of awe and concern etched on his face.
"That... That was... quite unsettling," he murmured, his voice barely audible. "I mean, it possesses a hypnotic quality, yet it also carries a disturbing undertone. It sounded like you're saying that these verses seem to hold a profound significance for you."
Carrie pursed her lips together, her hands locked together and her heart racing within her chest. "I can't quite explain it, but I sense that there's more to this poem. It's as if it's trying to convey a message."
Dr. Lewis reached out, his hand gently resting on Carrie's trembling shoulder. "Carrie, I believe you," he said earnestly. "To help me understand what's happening, I need to ask you something. When did you come across or learn this poem?"
"Don't tell him everything, especially about me," a dark, feminine voice whispered to Carrie.
Carrie proceeded to answer his question cautiously. "It's been about six months now."
"And where did you find it?"
"On a scrap of paper. I wrote it down in my journal."
Dr. Lewis leaned forward, his eyes intense. "Do you remember where you found the scrap of paper?"
Carrie's heart raced as she tried to recall the details. "I...I don't remember exactly. It was on a book I was reading, I think. After I woke up from a nightmare."
Suddenly, a dark, feminine voice echoed in her mind, causing Carrie to flinch. "No!" the voice roared. "Don't tell him anything!"
Dr. Lewis noticed her reaction and pressed further. "What kind of nightmare did you have?"
Carrie hesitated, unsure if she should reveal the truth. But the voice in her head grew louder, demanding that she keep quiet. "It was just a stupid nightmare," she finally said, her voice shaking. "Nothing more."
Dr. Lewis studied her carefully, sensing that there was more to the story. But for now, he decided to let it go. He knew that Carrie was hiding something, and he was determined to find out what it was.
Dr. Lewis leaned even closer, his eyes narrowing. "Are you sure you don't remember? It's important, Carrie. We need to know where that scrap of paper came from."
Carrie's heart pounded in her chest, her palms growing clammy. She desperately tried to recall the details, but the memory seemed to slip through her fingers like smoke. "I...I can't remember," she stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "It's all a blur."
The dark, feminine voice in her mind grew more insistent, its tone dripping with malice. "Don't trust him, Carrie. He might hurt you, like you've been hurt before. Like I've been hurt."
Dr. Lewis observed the fear etched on Carrie's face, causing him to lean back slightly in his chair. His unwavering gaze locked onto her, as he spoke with a calm yet determined tone. "Carrie, I need you to trust me. Whatever you're hiding, it's important..."
The room seemed to grow eerily silent to Carrie, as if all sound had been muffled. It was a disorienting sensation, almost as if she were losing her hearing. However, amidst the silence, she could hear a dark, feminine voice resonating in her mind. It praised her for obeying its commands, but there was a distinct malice in its tone whenever it mentioned Dr. Lewis, branding him as useless and worthless.
A small coffee mug on the desk shifted ever so slightly, catching Carrie's attention. It was a subtle movement, one that only she seemed to notice.
"If you want to talk about it," Dr. Lewis's voice broke through the silence, attempting to offer support.
"No!" Carrie's voice erupted in a scream, her eyes tightly shut. Her own voice seemed to merge with the dark, feminine voice in her head, creating a chilling harmony.
Suddenly, the coffee mug slipped from the desk, causing Dr. Lewis to jump in surprise. It landed perfectly in Carrie's hands, as she slowly opened her eyes. Blinking rapidly, she placed the mug back on the desk, her expression filled with confusion.
"I'm sorry," she stammered, her voice trembling. "I didn't mean to knock it off."
"But... You didn't touch it," Dr. Lewis replied, his voice filled with astonishment.
Carrie's confusion deepened as she looked down at her hands, which were now empty. She couldn't understand how the mug had ended up in her grasp without her even reaching for it. The room seemed to grow colder, and a shiver ran down her spine.
Dr. Lewis's eyes widened in astonishment as he witnessed the inexplicable event unfolding before him. His mind raced, desperately searching for a rational explanation, but it failed to provide any answers.
"Carrie, did you...did you just move that mug with your mind?" he asked, his voice barely audible.
Carrie's eyes darted anxiously around the room, fearing that her secret had been exposed.
"Are you the same Carrie responsible for the events on Prom Night?" Dr. Lewis inquired calmly.
Suddenly, the room erupted into chaos. The ground trembled violently, bookshelves toppled over, the lamplight flickered erratically, and the desk shook uncontrollably. It felt as if pandemonium had been unleashed. Despite his fear, Dr. Lewis managed to maintain his composure as he continued to engage with her. "Are you causing all of this?"
"Yes, yes, and yes," Carrie confessed, her voice filled with shame. She acknowledged his three questions, admitting her involvement.
Dr. Lewis's mind reeled with a mix of disbelief and fascination. He had heard of telekinesis, the ability to move objects with the power of the mind, but he had never witnessed it firsthand. And now, here was Carrie, a seemingly ordinary young woman, revealing her extraordinary abilities.
As the chaos in the room intensified, Dr. Lewis remained steadfast, determined to understand the truth behind Carrie's powers. He had heard rumors about her involvement in the events on Prom Night, a night that had ended in tragedy and destruction. The whispers had suggested that Carrie had somehow unleashed her telekinetic abilities in a fit of anger and revenge.
But now, faced with the undeniable evidence of her powers, Dr. Lewis couldn't help but feel a sense of empathy towards Carrie. He could see the shame in her eyes, the weight of her actions weighing heavily on her conscience. It was clear that she had been grappling with her abilities, struggling to control them and the havoc they could wreak.
"Carrie," Dr. Lewis spoke softly, his voice breaking through the pandemonium, "Do you recall that fateful night?"
"I... I remember it all," she replied, her voice intertwining with the sinister feminine presence within her mind.
Her eyes flickered rapidly, transforming into an abyssal black as they locked onto Dr. Lewis. Both of them stood frozen, their silence echoing the weight of what had just transpired. It was impossible to determine which aspect was more chilling: the sheer magnitude of Carrie's powers, the imminent threat of her losing control once again, or the shocking admission of her involvement in a crime that would forever etch itself into the annals of national history.
A gentle knock resonated through the room, and with a mere thought, Carrie's green eyes returned and she restored order to Dr. Lewis' office, erasing any trace of the chaos that had consumed it moments ago.
"Enter," Dr. Lewis managed to utter, still awestruck by the spectacle he had witnessed.
A nurse entered, positioning himself by the doorway. "I wanted to inform you that Mr. Brock is now resting and is prepared for the MRI test."
"'I'll attend to him immediately," he responded, and the nurse departed, closing the door behind him.
Dr. Lewis turned back to Carrie, his expression grave. "We must discuss what happened that night, Carrie. It's crucial for your treatment and for the safety of those around you."
Carrie nodded, her eyes returning to their emerald hue. "I understand, Doctor."
Dr. Lewis took a deep breath before continuing. "Can you tell me what happened on the night of the prom?"
Carrie closed her eyes, trying to push away the memories that threatened to overwhelm her. "I was so excited to go to the prom. I had never been to a school dance before, and I had a beautiful dress that I made myself."
She paused, taking a deep breath. "But then, they started to laugh at me. They poured pig's blood on me, and everyone laughed. I was so angry, so hurt. And then... then I just lost control."
Dr. Lewis leaned forward, his eyes fixed on Carrie. "What do you mean, lost control?"
Carrie opened her eyes, and Dr. Lewis could see the darkness creeping back into them. "I mean, I used my powers. I made the fire, I made the chaos. I killed them all."
Dr. Lewis shivered as a cold sensation traveled down his spine, sending a wave of unease through his body. He had always suspected that Carrie was behind the tragic deaths at the prom, but hearing her confess to it so calmly was truly unsettling.
Curiosity and fear mingled in his voice as he asked, "What are you?"
Carrie's response was filled with a grimness that matched the gravity of the situation. "To be honest, I've been asking that very question myself," she replied. Without giving him a chance to respond, she abruptly rose from her seat and made a beeline for the door. However, before leaving, she issued a chilling warning. "If I were you, Dan... I would pray that our paths never cross again."
Dr. Lewis couldn't simply brush off her words. "I wouldn't dismiss that possibility right away," he retorted.
Carrie's expression remained unchanged as she exited his office, leaving behind an air of uncertainty and foreboding.
As Eddie slowly regained consciousness, a soft melody filled the air, caressing his ears. Blinking his eyes open, he found himself surrounded by the unfamiliar confines of a metallic enclosure. Clad in a sky-blue hospital gown, his legs exposed and clad in pristine white socks, Eddie couldn't help but feel a wave of confusion wash over him.
Suddenly, a voice resonated from the speakers embedded within the box, calling out his name. "Eddie? Eddie, can you hear me? This is Dan speaking to you," Dr Lewis's voice echoed, breaking through the silence.
Startled, Eddie responded, his voice laced with bewilderment. "Hey, Dan."
A warm chuckle escaped Dr Lewis's lips as he welcomed Eddie back to consciousness. "Welcome back," he remarked, his tone filled with reassurance.
Still grappling with his surroundings, Eddie couldn't help but voice his confusion. "Where am I?"
With a gentle sigh, Dr Lewis explained, "Well, Eddie, you're currently inside the MRI machine. We've administered a mild sedative to help you relax."
Eddie's mind whirled with questions, but for now, he would have to trust in Dr Lewis's expertise as he embarked on this mysterious journey within the confines of the scanner.
Concern etched across Eddie's face as he questioned the whereabouts of his loved ones. "Where is Anne? And Carrie? Where are they?"
Soothingly, Dr. Lewis responded, "Anne is not here right now. But Carrie is in the waiting room. We're going to run some tests, okay? It's going to be completely painless. So, you know, just try to stay still. Uh, relax, and, um... Yeah, here we go."
Eddie's heart raced as he tried to process the information. His mind was still foggy, but the urgency in Dr. Lewis' voice made him realize that something serious must have happened. He couldn't remember how he ended up in the MRI machine or why he needed tests, but he trusted Dr. Lewis to guide him through this confusing ordeal.
As the machine hummed to life, Eddie closed his eyes and tried to calm his racing thoughts. The soft melody continued to play, its soothing notes providing a small comfort amidst the uncertainty. He focused on the music, allowing it to transport him to a place of tranquility.
Dr. Lewis's voice broke through the melody, bringing Eddie back to the present. "Alright, Eddie, we're going to start the scan now. Just stay still and let the machine do its work."
Eddie nodded, his body tense as he felt the machine move around him. The confined space of the scanner made him feel claustrophobic, but he reminded himself that this was necessary to find answers. He trusted Dr. Lewis to uncover the truth behind his current state.
Suddenly, a piercing buzz pierced through Eddie's ears, causing him to writhe in discomfort. It felt as if something within him was desperately trying to break free, vehemently protesting against the sound. Eddie couldn't help but scream in agony, his voice echoing within the confines of the box.
Alarmed by Eddie's distress, Dr Lewis urgently inquired, "Eddie, what's happening in there? Are you okay?"
But Eddie was unable to respond, his body writhing in pain as the sound intensified. It felt as if his head was being crushed, his thoughts jumbled and chaotic.
Noticing the flickering screen, Dr. Lewis turned to the nurse and commanded, "Turn it off," before rushing to the adjacent room.
As the nurse swiftly powered down the scanner, Eddie let out a groan and slowly rose from the scanning bed.
"Hey, hey, hey," Dr. Lewis reassured, helping Eddie to his feet. "You're okay. You're alright, buddy."
"Yeah," Eddie meekly replied.
"Look at me," Dr. Lewis gently placed his hand on Eddie's shoulder. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Eddie repeated, pushing Dr. Lewis's hand away.
"Alright. Just take a deep breath. You're safe now."
Eddie took a deep breath in, trying to steady himself. "Yeah."
"Just, get your stuff together and waiting outside with Carrie."
As Eddie strolled away, retrieving his partially dried clothes, the nurse's gaze fixated on the screen, witnessing the most peculiar and uncanny sight. Projected on the display was a diagram of Eddie's body, marred by an enigmatic black substance. The nurse's eyes widened in shock as he stared at the screen, trying to make sense of what he was seeing. The black substance seemed to be spreading rapidly throughout Eddie's body, almost like a virus. And he let him get out, and all he could do was hope that it was nothing serious.
Carrie sat in the waiting room, her eyes scanning the area. She saw a few people waiting to be seen, just like her. She couldn't help but think about her conversation with Dr. Lewis. The words he spoke to her were still ringing in her ears. She felt like she was going to explode with anger.
Suddenly, the dark feminine voice spoke to her. "And yet you still keep me in," the voice said.
Carrie knew that the voice wasn't wrong. She had been trying to suppress for so long. She tried to ignore the voice, but it was persistent. It kept whispering to her, urging her to let it out. She knew she couldn't do that. Not here, not now.
But the voice was getting louder and louder, and Carrie could feel her powers building up inside her. She knew she had to do something before it was too late.
Taking a deep breath, Carrie closed her eyes and focused on her breathing. She tried to push the voice away, to suppress it once again. And slowly, but surely, the voice faded away.
Carrie opened her eyes and looked around the waiting room. She saw the people waiting, just like her. But now, she felt different. She felt in control. And she knew that she could handle anything that came her way.
She looked out the window, the light shining on her face. Memories flooded her mind, memories of a time when she had unleashed her powers on those who had wronged her. She had learned to control them since then, but the anger still lingered.
But amidst the chaos of her thoughts, a new memory emerged, one that had long been suppressed and hidden away. It flickered before her eyes, like a distant star fighting to be seen amidst a sea of darkness.
"Carrie?"
Surprised, her attention was caught by the sound of her name.
It was Mr. Ulmann, her English teacher, who had spoken. He was a man in his forties, with a head of brown hair and dull, lifeless brown eyes. Dressed in a crisp white shirt and a black tie, he appeared rather disheveled with his stubbled round face. Carrie was well aware that Mr. Ulmann didn't hold her in high regard, much like most of the students at Ewen High. Therefore, when she heard her name being called by him, a wave of anxiety washed over her.
Continuing the conversation, Mr. Ulmann inquired, "Your poem? Do you have it?"
Almost imperceptibly, Carrie nodded in response.
"Well, can we hear it?"
With her nerves getting the best of her, Carrie retrieved a sheet of paper and began reading from it, her voice barely audible.
"Carrie, why don't you come up to the front of the class?" Mr. Ulmann interrupted. "So we can all hear it?"
Twins Nicki and Lizzy Watson exchanged a mischievous glance, stifling their laughter, while Sue Snell and Tommy Ross exchanged a look of concern, as if silently conveying, 'Oh no, this is going to be dreadful.'
"I'll read my poem, Mr. Ulmann," Sue volunteered.
"Thank you, Sue," Mr. Ulmann acknowledged, his gaze shifting to the blonde student. "But for now, I want to hear Carrie's." He then turned his attention towards Carrie. "Ms. White?"
As Carrie made her way up the aisle, she could feel the weight of every single gaze on her, accompanied by a few snickers from some of the students. Standing in front of the chalkboard, which looked like a disaster, she began to mumble her lines.
"Louder, Carrie," Mr. Ulmann urged.
Carrie turned to him, her face twisted in anguish, before resuming her recitation, this time louder, her eyes glued to the page in front of her.
"Jesus watches from the wall, but his face is cold as stone, and if he loves me, as she tells me, why do I feel so all alone?"
While a few of the kids couldn't help but giggle at the mention of Jesus, Sue, on the other hand, could sense the pain and isolation that resonated within Carrie's brief words.
"Is that... all, Carrie?" Mr. Ulmann inquired.
There was no response from the girl.
"Who is the 'he' that loves you in the poem? Jesus?" he continued.
After a momentary pause, Carrie nodded.
"You want Jesus to love you?" Mr. Ulmann probed further.
Once again, Carrie nodded, and this time, the kids couldn't contain their amusement, reveling in the opportunity to mock their classmate. Fueled by their giggles, Mr. Ulmann couldn't resist adding to the spectacle.
"You want Jesus to take you to the prom?" he asked, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Carrie shook her head, her face flushed with embarrassment and mortification. Suddenly, something inside her stirred, a dark and primal force that growled with a female voice.
"Let me out!" the voice demanded. "Let me kill him! Let me kill them all!"
Tommy muttered under his breath, "Asshole."
Those who overheard Tommy's comment couldn't help but giggle even more.
"Tommy?" Mr. Ulmann inquired, catching wind of the insult. "Did you say something?"
"That you're acting like an asshole, sir," Tommy boldly replied.
Carrie looked up at her defender, the dark voice in her head faded away, while Sue glanced at Tommy in surprise.
"Carrie's poem is the finest we've heard," Tommy added, further aggravating the situation.
The students braced themselves, anticipating Mr. Ulmann's reaction. He straightened himself up and sternly declared, "Detention, Mr. Ross."
"I have baseball practice, sir. My coach wouldn't be pleased if I missed it, especially if I explained why," Tommy retorted confidently.
Rather than escalating the conflict, Mr. Ulmann decided to let it go, realizing the futility of pursuing it further.
"Take your seat, Carrie," he grudgingly instructed, acknowledging her presence.
As Carrie complied and walked past Tommy, he gave her a subtle wink, causing Sue to look at him in awe.
"All right, Ms. Snell," Mr Ulmann resumed. "Let's hear yours . . “
The thought of that memory from her school days left Carrie feeling unsettled. It was strange how the enigmatic female voice had seemingly existed within her mind for as long as she could remember, whispering eerie promises that sent shivers down her spine.
As she turned her head, Carrie noticed Dr. Lewis approaching with Eddie, who appeared exhausted, by his side. Rising from her chair, she made her way towards them.
"Hey, Eddie," she greeted, concern evident in her voice. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah," Eddie responded, his voice tinged with weariness. "It was really loud in there. I kinda freaked out."
The dark voice within Eddie's head suddenly erupted, shouting, causing Carrie to exchange a worried glance with him.
"Now, listen," Dr. Lewis interjected, taking the lead. "You're not the first person to have a panic attack in there. I get claustrophobic too."
As they walked out of the hospital, a woman's voice called out to Dr. Lewis. He turned to see a middle-aged woman holding a small dog in her arms.
"Hey, Mrs. Manfredi," he greeted her.
"I just saw Morris," Mrs. Manfredi replied, her dog yapping. "And he's whining and complaining like an old baby again."
Dr. Lewis chuckled. "Oh, good."
As the conversation continued, the dog's behavior became increasingly erratic. It began to bark and growl at Eddie, as if sensing something ominous lurking within him. Carrie's eyes narrowed, darkening slightly as she emitted a low, menacing growl. The dog cowered before her, whimpering in fear.
Dr. Lewis, trying to regain control of the situation, addressed Mrs. Manfredi, "Okay, Mrs. Manfredi, we discussed the matter of the dog. Unfortunately, you cannot keep it." Apologizing, she replied, "Sorry... Gemini..."
With a heavy heart, they walked away, the echoes of Gemini's growls slowly fading into the distance.
"We're gonna get to the bottom of this, alright," Dr. Lewis reassured Eddie, his gaze filled with determination. "But for now, go home and rest."
Eddie nodded in agreement, his weariness evident. "Uh-huh."
"I will contact you as soon as your test results are in.”
"Alright, thank you, Dan. Thank you," Eddie expressed his gratitude.
"Oh, and Carrie?"
Carrie turned her head to face him. Dr. Lewis couldn't help but be lost in the memories of their conversation not so long ago. His gaze lingered on her, his lips pursed with concern. Finally, he mustered the courage to speak, his voice filled with genuine care, "Remember, if anything ever happens to you, don't hesitate to call me."
Carrie nodded, her eyes reflecting gratitude and trust. With a soft "okay," she continued on her way, walking past Eddie and making her way back to their apartment.

so yes he has a six year long total nervous breakdown over a divorce which does seem kind of unwarranted on the surface but the thing is that his breakdown wasn't just because of his fiance leaving him, it's because he's lived for four decades in this absolutely untenable state of being on the coattails of the revolution. the fact that dora even has the choice to pack up and fly away and leave behind the poverty and disability and addiction and misery and, as he imagines her saying, "leave him alone in hell forever" while he has no hope of ever leaving revachol or becoming anything more than what he is is what causes the breakdown just as much as her making that choice. and so that's why he sees her as dolores dei right, like yes it's because he deifies her but it's not just that, because dolores dei isn't just some ambiguous religious figure, she's specifically the innocence of moralism and the welfare state and interisolary travel. it's not dora that failed harry, it's the world that failed harry, and because dora was able to escape and moralism and the welfare state and interisolary travel were able to save her in a way they never saved him, he projects all the ways the world has failed him onto her. like harry has this breakdown because the woman he loved (rightfully) left him yes but also harry has this breakdown because he was born into poverty in a military hospital and he got polio as a child and never quite got better and all his childhood friends are dead of car accidents and drug overdoses and he's lived his entire life under a form of capitalism that allows for no self-determination, no political representation, no upward mobility. so when she leaves him it's not just a broken heart that does him in, it's the culmination of a lifetime of misery that he falsely blames her for because she was able to escape. you feel me. and that's why his breakdown is so insane and massive and disproportionate and that's why he sees her as god you feel me. like love did him in but capitalism killed him. right

June 25th <3
Horoscope - @jegulus-microfic - words: 1400
“Where are you two off to?” Barty spoke as he ran up behind Regulus and Pandora in the tall, stone walls of Hogwarts.
“Divination.” Pandora replies distractedly, much more interested in braiding a small piece of blonde hair in front of her forehead, causing her to go slightly cross eyed.
“We have charms don’t we?” Barty looked around the halls, confused, before looking at Regulus for an answer.
Regulus ran a hand through his hair and looked towards Barty. “Me and Dora got moved up, we’re in seventh year Divination.”
“Oh! Okay.” Barty replied, instantly zoning out of the conversation when he saw a rather grumpy looking Evan walking past. “Nerds.” He snorted and tan towards Evan. “Evie!”
“Are we sure they aren’t dating?” Regulus huffed out with a smirk. “I called Evan ‘Evie’ once as a joke and he fucking hexed me.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised.” Pandora matched his smirk with a grin. “Enough of them, let’s go embarrass some dumb seventh years with my seer privileges.” She winked.
Regulus rolled his eyes and brushed a loose curl away from his face. “Are we actually nerds, though?”
“You are, I’m just good at divination and shit at everything else.” She tapped her head to prove a point as they walked into the classroom, surprisingly, being some of the last ones there.
Regulus felt multiple pairs of eyes attach to him as he walked into the room, trying to avoid eye contact, he quickly stepped past the teacher to get to a table in the back.
“Not so fast!” The professor spoke as she stepped in front of a rather embarrassed looking Regulus, and an excited looking Pandora. “Everyone, these are some of our new sixth year students, the smartest of their year!”
He quite literally wanted to smash his head into a wall. “Thank you.” He muttered as he sat down at an empty table, Pandora next to him as she tied her platinum blonde hair in a bun with a multicoloured scrunchie, Regulus is pretty sure she sewed that one herself.
A few moments later, just as the professor started to speak, a flustered James Potter ran into the classroom. He apologised swiftly to the scowling professor and made a beeline for Regulus’ table as soon as he spotted him.
“Hi Reggie.” He whispered, Regulus would correct him like he does most people, but he quite likes it to be honest, especially when it’s James whispering in his ear.
“Potter.” How he managed to get that out with a smooth voice was a mystery.
“What did I miss?” James asked in a hushed tone.
Pandora turns to them, eyeing them suspiciously before shrugging and leaning over, propping her head on her hand. “Professor Wells told us that her horoscope predicts that Regulus has a secret.” She spoke in a hushed, overdramatic voice.
“Old nutter.” The Slytherin boy muttered.
“Do you now Reggie?” James asked with a dramatic gasp.
“Shut up and listen.” Regulus hissed.
Regulus saw a suspicious grin start to appear on the Potter boys lips as he spoke. “Ma-“ He stomped on James’ foot, receiving a yelp as James decided to finally pay attention to the class.
His brother and Lupin weren’t even at class today, not sure why, the Lupin kid seems to always be in the hospital wing for one thing or another and Regulus knew for a fact the he and Sirius were attached at the hip. Regulus wasn’t sure about Pettigrew, probably doesn’t take the class.
-
“What is that?” Regulus held the cup close to his face, trying to decipher what shapes the tea leaves made up. He held it to the side, hoping Pandora could tell.
Pandora hummed, a puzzled look appearing on her face. She grabbed her book, flicking through until she could find the recognisable shapes.
“That one…” She pointed at the first shape in the cup. “It’s a stag I think?” She flicked the page and looked at the next shape. “This book is not helpful at all!” She groaned and slammed the book on the table.
Now, James peered over his shoulder to take a look at the cup. “It is a stag!” He beamed and looked at Regulus, who rolled his eyes, yet again, and looked back at the cup. “That one there looks like a heart.” The brunette pointed his finger to the cup.
And he was right, anyone could tell that it was a love heart. But would Regulus admit that? No way.
“No it doesn’t.” He scoffed.
“Yes it does.” Pandora and James chimed in at the same time.
Regulus pointed at James, ignoring it when the Gryffindor licked his lips and grinned that stupid, gorgeous smile of his. “This- this is none of your business.” He turned to point at Pandora. “And no it does not.
“Yes is does!” She sang, in a slightly too loud voice, causing multiple people in the classroom to turn and look at them
“No it-“ He sighed. “I’m not winning this am I?”
Pandora’s grin widened. “Nope.”
-
Regulus left the class before Pandora as she spoke with the Professor about crystals, he didn’t even pretend to understand that nonsense, it’s a mystery how he ended up in higher Divination.
He turned to corner into an empty looking hallway, their class had finished early so not many students crowded the halls yet, which was nice.
Sitting down in a small alcove, he folded in on himself, tucking his legs to his chest and letting his head fall back onto the wall with a soft thud.
He heard footsteps nearby, but he passed it off as a student or teacher passing by. His gaze was glued on the roof, he traced the patterns in the stone with his eyes.
Only moments later, he felt a hand ruffle his hair, a hand he would recognise the feel of from anywhere.
“James.” He sighed with a laugh, the corner of his mouth tipping up into a smile.
Watching carefully, he saw James sit on the other side of the alcove. The older boy lifted Regulus’ legs up ever so softly, go place them on top of his own.
Regulus felt a soft flutter in his stomach as those honey brown eyes locked with his stormy grey ones. James’ tan, golden skin shone in the sunlight. It was perfect the way the sun hit him, just like a spotlight, like he deserved to be in.
But no, Regulus didn’t want to share James’ beauty with the rest of the world, that was his. His to keep, to touch, to cherish, to love.
“There’s no one here right?” James said in a low voice as he leant over to Regulus, their noses practically touching.
“No, but Pandora is very suspicious, you couldn’t be worse at hiding this.”
“Its not my fault, I need you.” James sulked.
Shaking his head fondly, Regulus leant in to connect their lips, probably too eagerly, but he couldn’t care any less right now when James was smiling again his lips.
“Regulussss.” He sang in a sweet voice, pulling away but only slightly. “A heart and a stag? I’m flattered.” He spoke as he brushed a loose dark hair away from Regulus’ flushed face.
“Those things are fake.” He grumbled under his breath.
“Are they now?” He fake pouted, Regulus hoped it was fake anyway, he hated upsetting James. “So you don’t love me.”
Regulus looked James in the eye, his big wide doe eyes shone with pure adoration and love.
“Fuck off.” He said through a smile, there was no hiding the amount of feelings he had for this boy, he was just wonderful, so loving, so kind, so gorgeous. Regulus was sure James was crafted just for him, so they could love each other so much it hurt.
“You love me.” The Gryffindor teased.
“Sadly I do love you, what was I thinking?”
“That I’m super hot and a good kisser?” James asked with an eyebrow wiggle.
Regulus nodded slowly and pulled James in again, the kiss was deeper, slightly rougher, yet still it was perfect. More than perfect.
James traced Regulus’ bottom lip with his tongue, sending shivers down his spine and having his heartbeat speed up shockingly fast. No matter how many times James does that, Regulus thinks his reaction will always be the same.
“Yeah, that’s it.” Regulus mumbled against his boyfriend’s lips.

"And Zeus, with his mighty thunder in hand, ruled the sky and Olympus," you read, flipping to the next page of the storybook and showcasing the colorful pictures of Zeus.
It was a Saturday morning, and you were immersed in reading stories for the children at the hospital. As a child psychology major, you relished the opportunity to connect with different children each Saturday. Your love for children made spending time with them while earning extra credit a win-win situation.
"Zeus has a wife named Hera, the Queen of Gods," you continued, pointing to the illustrated photo of Hera on her throne.
"Sometimes Zeus made mistakes, like having other friends. Hera didn't like that, but they still ruled together on Mount Olympus."
“Ms. Y/N?” a cute voice squeaked from the circle of kids in front of you. It was a small girl with short blonde hair and thick glasses.
“Yes, Kayla?” you smiled at her.
“What is M-I-S-T-R-E-S-S-E-S?” Kayla squinted, trying to read from the book you were showing. The rest of the kids leaned forward, curious about the illustrations.
“M-I-S-T-R…” The word clicked in your head, and you looked at the little girl in shock. “Where did you learn that word?”
“There,” Kayla pointed at the bottom corner of the book with her small finger.
You quickly turned the book around to check the illustration. There, at the bottom, was a scribble of words written in black marker.
Friends? More like mistresses. LOL
“What the fuck?” you muttered under your breath.
This was one of the children’s books you brought from your department’s lounge, where they keep all materials used in class.
A chorus of oohs broke out around you at the sound of your mild exclamation.
“I mean, what the fuzz?” you hastily changed your choice of words, hoping the hospital staff didn’t hear what you just said. “What the fuzzballs.”
Luckily, the children giggled at that, immediately distracted when a boy named Jake decided to share the story about how he swallowed his cat’s fuzzballs and ended up in the hospital.
The storybook took you longer to finish reading as you made sure to check every page before showing the kids the illustrations. Thankfully, there wasn’t any more writing in the rest of the book. You covered the words with a Post-It before returning it to the lounge.
It happened again after a few weeks. You were reading a Dora the Explorer book to the children, and there it was, in the smack middle of the book, a sentence scribbled in the same scrawly, obnoxiously bolded handwriting.
“Can you find the chocolate tree?” you read before staring at the page in horror.
This chick is blind, FR.
The kids whispered, trying to understand what the handwriting meant.
“C-H-I-C-K…chick!” Carter, a red-haired boy, exclaimed loudly, proud of himself for being able to read it.
“There aren’t any chickens in Dora,” Kayla chastised him, shaking her head as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“There is too,” he huffed, pressing a smudgy finger onto the page. “It says here! C-H-I-C-K. Chick.”
“Well, there’s only the big red hen. No chicks,” Kayla insisted, standing up to grab the book from your hands. The situation was about to get worse in a few seconds as you saw Carter’s face redden in frustration.
“Okay! That’s enough story time for today,” you quickly stood up, snapping the book shut. “Who wants to play Monopoly?”
“ME! ME! ME!” The kids screamed in excitement, forgetting the book altogether. It was a relief that kids forget about things so easily.
You, on the other hand, did not forget about this.

.
“Someone keeps leaving nasty comments in the children's books,” you huffed, dropping the Dora book in front of your best friend, Chaeryeong.
You had found her sitting in front of one of the long tables, peacefully eating her lunch in your department’s lounge. The room was slightly crowded, filled with students doing their projects or chatting with each other before classes.
Narrowing her eyes at your rude entrance, Chaeryeong slowly took off her headphones and dropped her chopsticks.
“No hello beautiful?” she asked, rolling her eyes playfully. “Why are you reading children's books anyway? Are you seven years old or something?”
“I’m reading them for the kids at the hospital,” you said impatiently, flipping open to the page where the messy handwriting was located.
“See? This person keeps writing in these books! The kids keep reading them out!”
“This chick blind, for real?” Chaeryeong snickered after reading it aloud. “Well, this person has a good point. Dora IS blind as fuck.”
You huffed, annoyed at how unserious the raven-haired girl was. But before you could open your mouth, a soft chuckle came from the table next to yours. You turned your head to come face to face with the queen bee and the captain of the volleyball team, Huh Yunjin. She grinned at you as she casually leaned on her elbows, not hiding the fact that she was eavesdropping on your conversation as the rest of her friends were engrossed in another conversation.
“See? Even Yunjin unnie agrees,” Chaeryeong said, slyly bringing Yunjin into the conversation.
She knew about your little crush on the captain ever since freshman year. You were just too chicken to strike up a conversation with her, and she was flirty by default, breaking hearts left and right. You just didn’t want to go through the heartbreak, after seeing so many girls crying in the bathroom over her.
Your eyes met Yunjin’s chocolate ones, her bright gaze felt like it was penetrating your soul. People weren’t kidding about her beauty; she really was a sight to look at. You felt your face flush as her gaze never left yours.
“Yeah, she definitely needs to get herself some glasses,” Yunjin pushed her headband a bit higher to keep her orange hair out of her face. “But I support an unbothered queen.”
Yunjin let out a little laugh, her nose scrunching adorably. You couldn’t help but stare, mesmerized by the way her full lips pulled back to show her glistening white teeth.
“Stop being gay,” Chaeryeong whispered, nudging you with her legs to wake you out of the trance.
Huffing in embarrassment and annoyance, you grabbed the Dora book and the rest of your stuff and started to put them into your bag.
“Where are you going?” Chaeryeong asked.
You could see the volleyball captain staring at you from the corner of your eye, and your ears flushed a deeper red.
“I’m going to find someone who understands how serious this situation is,” you ignored the soft snickers coming from both of the girls and turned around to walk out of the lounge.
“Let me know if you found someone who managed to get that chick a pair of glasses,” Chaeryeong called from behind you, laughter in her voice.

.

Cute. That was the first thing Yunjin thought when she saw you during the freshman orientation.
She was there to recruit people into the volleyball team when she noticed you, sitting in the second row, eyes barely open, mouth slightly agape as a few wisps of hair fell into your face when you started to doze off.
Ignoring the knowing looks of her teammates, she intentionally tried to get close to you, all but failing drastically. She ended up recruiting all of your close friends into the volleyball team, all but you. You were definitely not a land animal; that was all that Yunjin could say after watching you fall face-first onto the ground at any given chance.
But at least her efforts weren’t all gone to waste. Having recruited Chaeryeong and your roommate Yeji onto the team meant that she could see you in the bleachers in every game and often see you swing by during practice. Her delusional self convinced her that you were there to see her, but deep down she knew that you never even spared her a second glance.
Like today, you had once again rushed away from her as if she was the most menacing thing in the room, and you wanted nothing but to end the conversation with her. Was she really this scary? Or had you found out about her obsession with you?
“You should try to talk to her more, you know?” Chaeryeong said, raising her eyebrows as she watched her captain gaze after you leaving the room.
“Huh?” Yunjin quickly composed herself, leaning back in her chair. “With who?”
“Y/N. I know you like her.” The raven-haired girl said with a grin. “And I approve.”
“Pfft, I don’t even know her that well.” Yunjin whispered, lowering her voice to make sure her friends didn’t hear this conversation.
“I’m not Dora. I see how you look at her,” Chaeryeong pushed.
“I—I don’t look at her differently.”
Yunjin stood her ground, staring at Chaeryeong, ready to deny everything that came out of the younger girl’s mouth. But Chaeryeong wasn’t intimidated, shrugging nonchalantly as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“She finds your jokes in the books funny. Don’t let her reaction fool you.”
Laughing at Yunjin’s expression, Chaeryeon added, “I know your ugly handwriting.”
With that, the slender girl slipped her bag onto her shoulder and stood up, smiling mischievously at the blushing captain in front of her.
“Can’t believe it took you two years to make a move.”
.

.
.
Unconvincingly as it sounded, it really started with boredom.
Yunjin was alone in the student lounge last semester, skipping her least favorite class from Professor “Dead-Eye” Yoo and taking the liberty of finally having some alone time. Yunjin knew she was quite popular, being the captain and all, but sometimes she just wanted to go back to being that shy gamer girl she once was.
The lounge was deserted, and Yunjin flopped onto the sofa she sometimes saw you sitting on in the far-right corner. A couple of bookshelves were situated next to the sofa, completely filled with children’s books.
Scrunching her eyes in confusion about why there were so many books for kids when it was a university department lounge, Yunjin decided not to question it and got to read to kill time. But being attentive was not her strongest trait, so she soon relented to her immaturity and boredom.
Grabbing a sharpie from her bag, she started to leave dumb comments here and there in different books, as if she was the biggest book reviewer in the world. It was an immature and stupid thing to do, she knows. But at least it somehow managed to catch your attention, albeit months later.
God must’ve taken pity on her, watching her suffer through countless blind dates that her friends had arranged her to through her first two years of college, finally giving her the chance to know you better.
It was a few days after her encounter with you at the lounge with Chaeryeong, and she found you scribbling down in a brown notebook on the sofa next to the bookshelves again, this time alone. Deciding to brave herself just once, she took her breath and mustered all of her confidence before making her way towards you and flopped down onto the empty space next to you. She was going to take a chance and take Chaeyeong’s words as advice.
“Hey Y/N.” Yunjin gave you a boyish charming grin, her orange hair tousled perfectly across her leather jacket. She was effortlessly cool, and her sudden close proximity made your face heat up.
“Uh, hi, Yunjin-ssi.” You quickly bowed in respect.
“Please drop the honorifics.” The captain waved her hand, giving you a wink. “Just Yunjin is fine.”
You nodded, eyes flittering from Yunjin’s mesmerizing large ones to the record book in your hand. Unsure of what to do, you decided to awkwardly continue writing.
“What are you doing?” Yunjin slightly leaned towards you, her vanilla perfume invading your senses.
“Um... I-” You shook your head to gather your thoughts, “I’m keeping track of the books that were written on. We would have to replace them.”
“Ahh… the Dora book?”
“Yeah. I also found a new one this week, in the Ice Age books.”
“Really? What did it say?” Yunjin asked, trying to keep her face casual.
“It simply just wrote LIA next to Sid’s face.” You said, biting your lip to hold in your smile.
Yunjin, on the other hand, let out a booming laugh, enjoying the joke way too much.
“I’ll let Lia know she’s famous.” Yunjin said, after taking a few minutes to finally come down from her laughter.
Even though she was the one who wrote it, she still found it funny that her roommate, Lia, looked exactly like Sid the sloth when she was sleeping.
Trying to hide your grin, you said, “It’s not funny. The kids keep reading out the comments.”
The sight of your smiling made Yunjin’s heart soar. She was proud of herself for succeeding in making you smile, despite you not knowing it was her who left the comments. With this affirmation, Yunjin continued to make jokes with you as you talked for a bit. She would do anything to charm you, and she already had a plan hatched in her brain, something to do with your notebook.
“I’ll talk to you later, Y/N.” The captain squeezed your hand as she saw her friends calling for her.
You were disappointed to see her go, but you knew that she had better things to do than talk to you. She was, after all, one of the most popular and busiest students in your major.
“See you.” You muttered, ears red at the feeling of her hand on yours.
The captain walked towards the door, before turning back and raising her hand as a goodbye in a goofy boyish way that made your heart flutter.

It happened again, but this time, it was in your record book. Again, in obnoxiously bolded and capitalized letters, the mystery person managed to annoy the hell out of you, but you couldn’t help but find a bit of amusement in them.
HI :)
They had written this in the smack middle of a new page in your notebook, wasting the entire page. Deciding to write back for the first time, you took out your pen and wrote a small line under their loud greeting.
Don’t write in my notebook :)
Thinking this was able to stop the culprit from writing anything else, you shut the book satisfied. Oh, how wrong you were.
The next day, you found a light pink post-it stuck on top of the original page.
BUT I WANT TO BE FRIENDS :(
Annoyed at the culprit, but also at yourself for finding them cute for using a post-it instead of just writing on your book.
No.
You wrote back, slightly hesitating before slamming shut the notebook altogether. Although intrigued and wanting to know who was behind the writing, it was probably best that you don’t encourage them.
“Getting ready to dive deep into another children’s book of yours?” A familiar voice broke you out of your thoughts.
Your heart couldn't help but lurch at the sight of the orange-haired captain smiling at you, her nose scrunched adorably.
“Yeah, any recommendations? I know you love these books.” You teased back, already comfortable with her presence.
Despite not really getting the chance to talk to her that much, she had this aura that made you feel calm and relaxed, as if you could trust her with anything.
“I’ll recommend one only if you read it to me.” Yunjin flirted easily, giving you a charming grin and wink.
Caught off guard at her response, your face turned a slight shade of pink. “I-”
“I’m just kidding, Y/N.” The taller girl laughed at your flustered state. “I used to read ‘The Jungle Book’ to my sister when she was a kid, and she loved it. Maybe the kids at the hospital would love it too.”
"You have a younger sister?” You asked. This was new information to you, but then again, you and Yunjin never really talked before this semester.
“Yeah, we have a really big age difference though. She’s 10 years younger than me.” Yunjin’s eyes glinted at the mention of her sister.
“She must be really happy to have you as a sister.”
“I hope so." Yunjin said with a sad smile, “I haven’t seen her in a couple of years. She’s still in the US with the rest of my family.”
“It must’ve been hard for you to move here all alone.” You hesitantly reached out your hand to squeeze the Captain’s forearm in comfort.
She gave you a grin at your touch, and your heart fluttered at how her eyes seem to twinkle whenever she met yours.
“I’m fine now.” She said, putting her other hand on top of yours. “I made a lot of friends, and also, I got the chance to meet you.”
The flirty queen-bee you knew was back. You cleared your throat to shake off the nerves she managed to give you and pulled back from the trance she pulled you into.
Quickly checking your watch as an excuse to avoid looking into her eyes again, you noticed it was almost five p.m., the time Chaeryeon left for practice.
“Don’t you have practice?” You asked.
“Nope.” Yunjin made a pop sound at the P, which you found adorable. “We have a game next week, so I gave the girls a two-day break.”
“You’ll be watching us, right?” She asked, her eyes hopeful.
You nodded, “I never missed a game. I’m Chaeryeon’s and Yeji’s number one fan.” You grinned, proud of yourself.
Yunjin merely pouted at this, “You should cheer for me sometime. I’m playing too, you know.” She nudged you.
You laughed, trying to shake off your nervousness at her blatant flirting. “You already have a lot of fangirls.”
Yunjin whined, begging, “I don’t know them, but I know you. None of my friends wear my number because they’re on the court with me.“
“I’ll think about it.“ you laughed at her antics. Although she was a year older than you, she managed to act like a little kid sometimes.
After talking (more like flirting on Yunjin’s side) for another while, Yunjin left to go to her part-time job at the diner, leaving you alone with your thoughts.
The feeling she gave you messed up your thoughts, and you were worried that your old crush on her will be reignited.
She was just friendly. She thought of you as a friend. You convinced yourself. You needed to see her as a friend too, before you get your heart broken.
“Maybe I need other friends than Yunjin.“ you muttered to yourself before opening the notebook once more.
No.
You crossed out the word and wrote.
Fine. What’s your name?
.
.
.
.
Turns out, the person behind the obnoxious block letters was worth talking to. You’ve been texting the mysterious person for the past few weeks, and they managed to entertain you and connect on a deeper level. Never getting a reply to their name, only with a doodle of a snake, you exchanged numbers without knowing each other's names, and it was better like that. To talk about your day anonymously.
You were, however, curious about the person behind the texts and writing. They were considerate, easy to talk to, and extremely funny. You honestly felt that you could be really good friends with them. From books to life goals, you could talk to them about anything and everything.
It was a bit unnerving how someone in your major knew all this about you, but at the same time, you felt that they were someone you could trust, and they felt the same way about you after sharing some of their family problems with you.
You noticed you were developing a sort of attachment to this person, as if they were your soulmate. You found yourself instantly texting back whenever the snake contact popped up on your phone, and when you were texting, you were re-reading your past conversations. They were a great way for you to get Yunjin off your mind, which you found to get harder every time she stopped by to say hello.
“You’re late, Shin.” Chaewon, the co-captain of the volleyball team, chastised a wind-swept Yuna as she slammed open the door to the locker room and hurried to change into her team uniform.
Yuna was the newest addition to the team and was also the cousin of Y/N. (As soon as Yunjin heard of this, she immediately treated Yuna with patience and additional care, not that she liked you or anything, just her showing affection to her juniors).
The volleyball team was getting ready for the final match before the semi-finals. They had an away game with a nearby school, and Yuna, being Yuna, had overslept and missed the bus to the game. Yuna quickly bowed her head in apology, and Chaewon simply patted her head in assurance and ushered everyone to warm up.
“What took you so long?” Yeji asked, “I thought Y/N said she would drive you instead.”
"She did. But it took her half an hour to get ready because she was busy giggling at her phone like a love-sick schoolgirl.” Yuna said, exasperation in her voice.
At that, Chaeryeon, who was standing near the two girls tying her hair, let out a laugh. “Yeah, she’s been doing that pretty often. She must have a crush or something.”
“You think so?” Eunchae, one of the tallest yet youngest players, chimed in, exposing the fact that she was eavesdropping.
“That’s new; I thought she would just end up being a single woman and adopt all of the kids in the hospital.” Yeji mused, happy that her roommate is finally interested in someone. Throughout the two years she lived with you, you seemed to show zero interest in love.
“Must be nice to be liked by unnie.” Eunchae said dreamily, causing the rest of the girls around her to fake gag and give a round of protest.
“Wish it was me instead.”
“Who are you dreaming about dating?” Yunjin suddenly appeared, wrapping her hands around the tall girl. “My baby manchae is off limits until she’s 40.”
The captain had returned from a quick discussion with their coach and had gone into the locker room to usher the girls out for warm-up.
“40? Do you want me to die single?” Eunchae furrowed her brows and pouted, “And besides, we were talking about Y/N unnie’s love life, not mine.“
“Y/N? What about Y/N?” Yunjin tried to ask nonchalantly, leading the girls out of the locker room.
“She has a crush on someone.” Chaeryeon said slyly, paying close attention to Yunjin’s reaction.
The orange-haired girl kept her face composed, but in reality, her heart was beating at the thought of you liking someone, that wasn’t her. A sense of hollowness and jealousy crept into her skin.
“That’s nice. Do you know who?”
The girls shrugged, and Yunjin decided not to push anymore. The way Chaeryeon looked at her was obvious enough to blow off her cover and reveal her affection towards you, and she was not keen on letting others know.
Putting on a smile so bright that could make any of the people in the crowd swoon, Yunjin tried to push back her thoughts and jealousy, waving to the people in the stand as the team entered the court.
Cheers came from all around her, cheering her name every time she sent the ball flying at deadly speed toward her rivals. She wasn’t called the Ace of SNU for nothing. Yet, as she scanned the crowds after every point earned, she hoped you would also be there yelling her name.
“Good game.” Chaeryeon whispered in Yunjin’s ear as they gathered together in a group hug to celebrate another victory.
The crowds were wild around them, chanting their names as they celebrated their ticket to the semi-finals.
“But you better step up your other game before it’s too late, captain.” The raven-haired girl gave Yunjin a grin before sauntering off to the stands, where you were hugging Yeji in celebration.
You were wearing Chaeryeon’s spare uniform, proudly displaying the Lee on your back, while waving a self-made Yeji and Yuna flag. You looked so cute with your hair in a ponytail, with two lines of blue drawn horizontally across your cheeks to represent SNU.
At that moment, Yunjin wished nothing more than to see you wearing her uniform instead.
She better step up her game.

So…have you ever been in love before?
You were late at night studying in the school library a few days after the game when your phone buzzed, indicating a text message. It was from your mystery friend.
You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion at their sudden question, before typing out a quick response.
No, I don’t think so. Have you?
As their text bubble indicated typing, a full minute passed before their response came through.
No.
Followed by another long pause.
But I wish I did.
Biting your lip in thought, you were unsure of what to make of this sudden confession from your friend. You were developing an attachment to them, which seemed foolish when you didn't even know what they looked like, let alone their name.
It was truly pathetic; the two people in college for whom you had feelings were the queen bee of the school, with a long line of admirers, and the other was some random faceless stranger about whom you knew everything and nothing.
What got you thinking about this? You typed back.
A girl. But she has feelings for someone else.
So your little mystery friend does have someone on their mind. You tried to push down your disappointment and the slight burn of rejection as you replied.
Have you tried telling her how you feel about her?
No, I would probably scare her off or something.
I’m sure you won’t.
It took them another five minutes before they finally responded back.
What about you? Is there anyone on your mind?
Yunjin, the fiery-haired girl, instantly came to mind. Recent interactions with her had given the impression of growing closeness. She took the time to chat with you in the student lounge, held your bag, walked you back to your dorm after study sessions, and even brought treats from the diner when her shift ended. Though it felt like more to you, the realization struck that she viewed you simply as a friend.
Yeah, this girl. But she sees me as a friend.
Yunjin's heart skipped a beat upon reading your reply. It confirmed Chaeryeon's statement – you had your eyes set on someone else. She pondered the possibilities, considering potential candidates. Was it the charming Shin Ryujin from the softball team? Perhaps someone from the hospital where you volunteered? Or could it be one of your close friends, like Chaeryeon or Yeji? The uncertainty left Yunjin feeling a mix of curiosity and apprehension.
Did you tell them how you feel?
No, I would probably scare them off or something.
Despite her heartbreak, your text made her smile a bit. There you were again, teasing her by copying her sentence.
I’m sure you won’t, pretty girl.
How do you know if I’m pretty or not?
I just do.
You couldn’t help but blush at their compliment. They always managed to say something earnestly that made your heart flutter, similar to the way Yunjin always seemed to have an effect on you.
You should take this confidence and confess to the girl you like before it’s too late. What’s there to lose?
You have a valid point…
I’ll work on confessing to them before the end of the year, but only if you be my wingwoman.
Your wingwoman? How? I don’t know anything about them.
Just share with me the little things you like as advice.
Deal.
So…better start listing.
Hmm, I’d say start with flowers.
Oh, and little notes are pretty cute, too.
.

.
.
"The Ultimate Checklist to How to Get That Girl? Seriously?" Chaewon read over Yunjin's shoulder incredulously.
Flushing a deep red, the captain quickly slammed shut her notebook and pushed the short-haired girl away.
"Stop snooping!"
"You know you can just ask her out, right? Y/N." The shorter girl reached over to snatch the book from Yunjin, quickly scanning over the checklists.
Yunjin had managed to devise a checklist incorporating all the things you mentioned in your previous text conversations with her about your preference as her 'wingwoman’. She had compiled recommendations on what someone should do to win over someone's heart, hoping to win over yours.
"I can't. She likes someone else." Yunjin said defeatedly, her shoulders sagging.
"Who can resist the Huh Yunjin charms? I'm pretty sure everyone would love to date you." Chaewon snorted, amused by how her seemingly always confident friend was so hung up on you. This was a first.
"Not Y/N."
Although teasing her friends was in her DNA, Chaewon couldn't help but feel bad for her friend. Yunjin looked lost (kind of like a kicked puppy, but she wasn't going to say that to her face), and as co-captain of the team, it was a rule that she would need to support their captain whenever they needed help.
"Find, I'll help you." Chaewon sighed, looking at the long list and preparing herself mentally. It was going to be a long few months.
"Let me call the girls for backup."
“Another gift from your secret admirer?” Yeji teased when she saw you enter the shared dorm with a tray of hot coffee.
You had just returned from the library, preparing for your final exams, and found yet another gift waiting in front of your door.
You shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant, but your ears betrayed you by reddening. “There’s one for you.”
Yeji jumped up in excitement and went straight for the coffee, sighing contentedly as she sipped on it. “I’d just date them already.”
You had been receiving these little gifts for the past few weeks, and it was driving you crazy. Initially sweet, the mystery person never revealed themselves, making you suspicious of everyone. Additionally, you were concerned about how much they were spending on you. Although seemingly insignificant, the little gifts added up.
The first gift was a single rose and a typed note in front of your dorm room, a bit like a ransom note. The note included a cheesy pick-up line that you found endearing, despite yourself. Soon after came cute accessories, a new hair tie, and even a cute hippo plushie. Your admirer seemed to know a lot about you, even the things you lost.
They gifted you things you had listed out to your mystery friend. Could your admirer and your friend possibly be the same person?
“Oh, by the way, Yunjin and the team are coming over to discuss our strategies for the championship game, is that okay?” Yeji mentioned casually, trying to hide her grin.
Chaewon had called her earlier, letting her in on Yunjin’s huge crush on you and the plan to sweep you off your feet.
Panic filled your eyes as you looked up from your phone. You were still dressed in your "bum outfit," as Yeji would call it, consisting of old sweatpants and an oversized Nike hoodie – definitely not presentable.
“What? When?” You quickly surveyed the room, noticing a small pile of clothes and rushing to stuff them in the laundry basket.
“In about…”
Knock, knock, knock.
“Now.”
At that moment, you pulled your hair out of its messy bun and ran your fingers through it in a rush. Leave it to Yeji to embarrass you in front of Yunjin.
Before Yeji could open the door, it was slammed open, revealing a snow-covered Chaeryeon with her cheshire grin, followed by Chaewon, Lia, Yuna, and Yunjin. Your eyes met hers, and you got lost once again in her warm brown hues.
She looked particularly good today, with her fiery orange hair tucked into a gray woolen hat and dressed in a red leather jacket. She gave you a toothy smile before closing the door behind her.
“Hey, stranger, it’s been a while,” Yunjin said, pulling you into a hug, engulfing you in her sweet lavender perfume. “I missed you.”
You immediately blushed at this, still not used to her flirty nature.
“We had lunch together last Saturday.”
“Yeah, three days is way too long,” she sighed dramatically, her arms still wrapped around your shoulders. Her eyes scanned your features, as if she was trying to memorize every freckle and blemish.
“If you two are done flirting, we would like to start discussing tactics,” Chaewon said, her lips curled into a teasing smile as she saw Yunjin immediately pull her arm off of yours and turn beet red in embarrassment.
“I…” Yunjin muttered, before giving up coming up with an explanation and plopped down onto the sofa.
You busied yourself with schoolwork as the girls squeezed into the makeshift living room and focused on their strategy plan for the upcoming games. You watched them with adoration; it wasn’t often that you saw them together except for their games, and you loved how sweet their dynamic was. Chaewon was the one who kept everyone focused, Lia and Yeji were the encouraging ones, and Yunjin was the planner. She led the gameplays and tactics, ensuring everything was on track. The older girls also babied Yuna and Chaeryeon, making sure they understood everything.
You didn’t know Chaewon and Lia that well; they were Yunjin’s friends. Still, you could tell that they were just as sweet and caring as the captain was. However, you couldn’t help but think of the comment your mystery friend left in the Ice Age book whenever you looked at Lia. She did look a bit like a sloth, but the cutest one ever.
Hence, you decided to text your mystery friend.
Lia does kind of look like a sloth. But cuter.
As you sent out the text, a small buzz came from the living room.
Cuter as in your type?
No. But you did her dirty by writing her name next to Sid.
Another buzz. You furrowed your brows and looked toward the direction of the living room.
Who IS your type then?
Someone funny, I guess. Goofy but smart.
Buzz. It felt too coincidental. Your palms started sweating at the thought that you might finally discover who was behind those texts that accompanied you through long nights and motivated you.
Hmm…is there someone like that in our school?
Yeah, there is.
As soon as you sent out a text, another buzz came from the living room. At that moment, you were convinced that your friend was one of the girls in the room.
Is it the person you mentioned you liked?
You silently leaned forward on your bed to peek at the girls obscured by the sofa, lying on their stomachs in front of a strategy board. You froze at the sight of Yunjin biting her full lip and looking at her phone, engrossed in whatever she was reading. The rest of the girls were talking with each other, none of them looking at their phones.
Could it possibly be the orange-haired girl all along? The girl you've been texting about was the one receiving your texts. If they were Yunjin, then she would possibly be the one sending you your gifts.
The pounding in your heart was so loud, engulfing you in erratic thumps. You couldn’t even hear the girls talking; all you could focus on was the possibility that Yunjin was the person behind the texts.
Deciding to leap in faith just this once, you texted back.
Yes. The captain of the volleyball team, do you know her?
Another buzz followed by the screen of Yunjin’s phone was enough to prove that she was indeed the person all along. Eyes scanning through the sentence you sent to her, Yunjin’s brown eyes widened, and she immediately threw her phone to the side, covering her face with her arms. She let out a muffled scream and kicked her legs in excitement, startling the rest of the girls.
You couldn't help but laugh at her adorableness. Putting on your headphones, you pretended to be studying while trying to calm your erratic heart. Muffled shouts and laughter could be heard from the girls, probably picking on their captain.

.
.
For the first time in her life, it seemed that fate had taken favor in Yunjin. Having dedicated all of her time to school and volleyball, she never had the privilege of starting a relationship with someone. Volleyball itself took up most of her time, with her parents and her personal coach insisting on her becoming the best player in the league and eventually joining the national team of South Korea. She wasn’t unhappy with her life, but she wouldn’t call herself happy.
Sure, her friends set her up on several blind dates, but she never liked them enough to want something more. She was only interested in being the best at volleyball and being the best captain for the girls, nothing more.
That was, until, she met you.
She was enamored by you right from the start, with your shy smile and soft features. She wanted nothing more than to get to know you. After finally getting the chance to talk to you after two years, she had fallen for you, deep. All those late-night talks through text made her understand that you were more than a mere crush, more than any of the girls on those blind dates. The way you viewed the world made her want to become something more to you. She wanted to be included in your world.
Life started to mean more than just volleyball, and she noticed that you made her happy, actually happy.
She hoped that you would give her the chance to do the same for you. Now, with the revelation that the person she worried so much about you liking was her, she was beyond the moon. She just hoped you wouldn’t be disappointed that she was the one behind the texts.
It was the Saturday after the eventful day, and Yunjin was nervous. She blamed it on the finals game they had tomorrow, but in reality, it was the first time she was alone with you after knowing that you liked her.
After running to you during her lunch break from her shift at the diner two months ago, she had established a weekly routine of getting lunch with you every Saturday. The diner she worked at was near the hospital she volunteered at, so grabbing lunch together before visiting the kids was another highlight of your week.
"Did something happen?" You asked as you sat across the captain.
You had arrived at the booth a while ago, and the captain hadn’t said much but to order. She was fidgeting with the straw of her iced coffee, bending it over repeatedly as she looked at anywhere but you.
"What? No!" Yunjin’s eyes flitted to yours, before quickly looking away again.
"Nothing’s wrong."
"Then how come you’re avoiding me?" You asked, slightly pouting.
Yunjin nearly kissed you on the spot at the sight of you pouting cutely.
She had been refusing to meet your eyes because she knew that the second she did, all defenses would fall, and she would just confess her love to you. It has been like that for the last few days, ever since she knew that you liked her back; she wanted nothing more than to have you in her arms. But she hadn’t thought of a plan on how to ask you out yet; she also had to confess to you that she was the one behind the texts. This scared her, worried that you would hate her for lying to you about not knowing who you were.
"I-I’m not." Yunjin stuttered, still refusing to look at you in the eye.
Before you could reply, the waitress brought over your food. You always got the same thing, blueberry pancakes with scrambled eggs on the side, while Yunjin always had her protein lunch filled with eggs, chicken, and tofu. It didn’t really look good, but Yunjin made sure her body was in the best shape for volleyball.
Today’s meal was slightly different. The waitress had also brought in a plate with two gingerbread cookies, both with cute red buttons and frosty smiles.
"We give out gingerbread cookies to our customers every year around Christmas time," the waitress explained, her eyes twinkling mischievously, "Enjoy!"
Yunjin watched you from the corner of her eyes as you excitedly took a few photos of the cookies.
"Look Yunjinnie, they’re holding hands!"
Yunjin wished she could hold hands with you.
"This one looks more like you." You giggled, moving the plate forward to show her.
The restaurant workers seemingly did not put their heart into decoration because the one you insisted that looked like Yunjin had lopsided eyes and a way out of proportion mouth, so wide that it went higher than the eyes.
"Are you saying I look ugly?" She said, pretending to be offended.
"What? No!" You interjected, blushing a deep red and pulling back the plate to inspect the cookies. "I meant that you always have a big smile like this, meeting your eyes."
That’s because I only smile like this when I’m with you, Yunjin thought.
"Here, try one." You broke the cookies apart and raised one of the cookies towards Yunjin’s face.
"I can’t. I have to stay in shape for tomorrow's game." Yunjin was taken aback at your forwardness. She was normally the one flirting, and you were the shy one. It seems that the roles have reversed today.
"C’mon. Just one bite wouldn’t hurt." You wheedled. "Please?"
Yunjin’s eyes finally met yours. Big mistake.
Your eyes, every so bright, were staring at her pleadingly, with a hint of something that Yunjin couldn't quite put a finger on. Was it affection? Adoration?
Nevertheless, the captain immediately gave in and took a bite of the cookie in your hands. She would always do anything for you.
"It’s…It’s good." Yunjin managed to say, her gaze still locked with yours.
You let out a satisfied grin and brought the same cookie to your lips, pausing slightly before taking a bite.
Yunjin’s brain went into a full system shutdown. YOU JUST ATE THE COOKIE SHE HAD. IT WAS AN INDIRECT KISS. I REPEAT. INDIRECT KISS.
“Mhmmm… It’s so good. Tastes like Christmas.” You said, finally breaking eye contact and looking at the rest of the cookies in front of you.
“It’s almost the end of the year.” You said softly, before looking up again at the flustered girl.
End of the year.
Yunjin’s heart went into rapid speed, and her blood went cold. Could you have possibly known that she was the one texting you? How else would you know the importance of the end of the year to her? She had promised you that she would confess to her crush before the end of the year if only you would become her wingwoman.
Shaking her head slightly to push out the possibility, she tried to forget about her ‘delusions’. You didn’t know. There was no way.
Thankfully, you changed the topic to her games tomorrow, saving her from embarrassing herself.
“Will you be at the game tomorrow?” Yunjin asked as she walked you to the hospital after lunch.
“Of course.” You said, gently holding onto her arm to keep yourself from slipping on the icy roads. (Yunjin’s heart still stuttered whenever you did that).
“I never miss a game, remember?”
“Will you-Will you be cheering for me?” Yunjin asked hesitantly.
“Hmm? I always cheer for you girls, pabo.” You laughed, nudging the taller girl.
“No, I mean,” Yunjin looked at your hands clutching tightly on her arm. Deciding to brave herself for the first time today, she asked, “Will you wear my number?”
She watched as your cheeks turn pink at her words.
“I don’t know…you have quite a lot of fangirls already.” You answered, hitting both of you with déjà vu.
“But none of them are you.” The orange-haired girl stopped walking, gently pulling you around to look at her.
To say you were in deep was an understatement. You had fallen hard for the captain, in love even. Her beauty and confidence were what had drawn you to her at first, but after getting to really know her through those texts, you had started to fall in love with her. Her mind, the way she thought, and her endless patience… she was something that was too good to be true.
“What are you trying to say?” You asked, searching her eyes for any hint of hesitation. You found none, only determination and softness in those honey-brown hues.
“I’m saying…” Yunjin paused, composing herself before she stared back into your eyes, “I like you, Y/N, a lot.”
“And it would be nice if I can take you out on a date.” She continued, her eyes gleaming hopefully.
“But only if you want to.” She hastily added.
You laughed at the last sentence. She was always so considerate, worried that she would be doing something without your consent. And that was what you loved about her.
“I would love to.” You said, before standing on your tiptoes to kiss the tip of her frozen nose. Yunjin froze at the feeling of your soft lips on her skin.
“But only if you win the game tomorrow.”
Yunjin let out a sigh of relief before gently wrapping her arms around your waist, pulling you closer. All those sleepless nights dreaming of you were worth it.
“Easy.”
.
.
.
.
As the captain got ready for bed, a familiar buzz came from her phone. It was from you.
I better see your jersey in front of my door tomorrow, Huh Yunjin.
Yunjin let out a scream, scaring Lia, who was already passed out, and causing her to fall off her own bed.
"What the hell?" Lia groaned from the floor, looking up at her roommate.
"She knows it’s me. And she’s okay with it!" Yunjin said, giggling like a schoolgirl and dancing around. "She likes me back!"
Sighing, Lia slowly dragged herself up from the floor and laid horizontally back on her bed, too tired to crawl back under the covers.
"Go to bed, Yunjin."
Giggling to herself, the captain quickly texted you goodnight, receiving another sweet message from you.
As she went to turn off the lights, she looked at her roommate, sleeping with her mouth open and dressed in her greenish-grey fuzzy pajamas.
Lia did indeed look like a sloth. A cute one.
“Why does Yunjin-unnie have a sunburn?” Eunchae whispered, not so quietly.
“That’s not a sunburn, that’s the glow of love, manchae.” Yeji laughed, patting the taller girl’s head affectionately.
“Love? What?” Eunchae furrowed her brows, clearly out of the loop.
"Someone in the stands is rocking her jersey," Chaeryeon added, grinning mischievously, despite Yunjin shooting her a disapproving look as they continued warming up for the game.
“One-third of the crowd is wearing her number,” Eunchae whined, scanning the crowd again for Yunjin’s possible lover.
You waved shyly to the girls (mostly to Yunjin) as you moved to sit on the bleachers with your friends. You had found a box containing Yunjin’s jersey and a light blue bandana, along with a single rose in front of your dorm room when you woke up in the morning.
You had put on the jersey and decided to tie your hair with the silky bandana, and adding a dash of sparkling highlighter. You wanted to look your best for the captain.
Unable to resist herself, Yunjin made her way towards the railings near the bleachers, ignoring the teasing hoots coming from her members. You walked down a few levels to meet her at the other side of the railing.
“Hi,” she said cutely, her eyes sparkling in happiness as she checked you out. You looked so good in her jersey.
“Hi, Yunjinnie.”
“You look good.” She bit her lip and reached over to hold your hands in hers.
“You better win this game, Yunjin. I’m looking forward to our date.”
“Of course. I play better when I’m in a good mood.” Yunjin leaned over and pressed her lips on your forehead.
“And you make me happy.”
.
.
.
.
“Aw man...” Eunchae said sadly, watching her captain and you cuddling up together. “I wanted to date Y/N-unnie.”
“You’re too young for dating, Hong Eunchae.” The rest of the girls said in unison, before grabbing the maknae away from the scene.
It's a long one!
A bit of fluff for Christmas :)

Maui Fires & How to Support Relief Efforts
(Posted on 8/10/23) Hi, I'm Jae and my family is from Lāhainā. I watched my hometown burn down this week. The fires caused immeasurable loss in my community so I'd like to spread awareness of the situation as well as provide links to support local organizations directly assisting survivors. I'm pretty sure most of my following is Not local so I'm writing with intent to inform people outside the situation, but if you're reading this and happen to have family in the affected area that isn't accounted for, message me and I can send you the links to the missing persons tracking docs + more localized info!! If you'd like to skip down to how to help and follow community organizations, scroll to the bottom of the post after the image.
Earlier this week, Hurricane Dora passed south of the Hawaiian Islands, bringing strong wind gusts that caused property damage across the islands. On Tuesday August 8, high winds caused sparks to fly in the middle of Lāhainā town, knocking out power lines and immediately igniting drought-ridden grasses. The fire spread quickly and destroyed the entire center of town, the harbor, and multiple neighborhoods including Hawaiian Homes (housing specifically for Native Hawaiians), parts of Lahainaluna, basically all of Front Street, and low-income housing units. There is only one public road in and out of town, and after a very hectic evacuation period that road has been mostly closed off except to emergency responders, thus it is extremely difficult for anyone to leave town to get help. The nearest hospital is 20 miles away in Wailuku, and most grocery stores in town have burnt down.
As of Thursday, August 10, over 1,000 acres have been burned and 271 structures (including homes, schools, and other community gathering places) have been destroyed. Cell service is still extremely spotty, many of the surrounding neighborhoods deemed safe for evacuees are still without utilities. There are currently confirmed 53 deaths but that number is expected to increase as search-and-rescue efforts continue. Countless families have been displaced and many have lost the homes they lived in for generations. Places of deep historical significance have been reduced to ash, including the gravesites of Hawaiian royalty, the old Lāhainā courthouse where items of cultural significance were stored, and Na ‘Aikane o Maui Cultural Center. To add further context: Lāhainā has a population of about 13,000 residents. EVERYONE I know has been impacted in some way--at best forced to evacuate, at worst their house was burnt to the foundation, they cannot find a loved one, etc. I'm still trying to track down family members and it's been over two days. My neighbors down the street had homes last week and now many don't have ANYTHING. The hotels are taking in residents (tourists are also being STRONGLY urged to leave so that locals can recover). Without open access to the rest of the island, Lāhainā residents are now dependent on whatever people had in their homes already as well as disaster relief efforts coming in, but it's been difficult to organize and mobilize due to the location + conditions. People who have made it out are in shelters where no blankets or medicine were provided. Friends and acquaintances from neighbor islands are preparing aid to send over. Community response has been incredible, but the toll on the town has been immeasurable. My parents were desperately walking through town yesterday, my mom sounded absolutely hollow talking about it on the phone with me. It's horrifying. Below is a satellite map with data from the NASA Fire Information for Resource Management System showing the impacted areas from the past week; all of the red blotches were on fire at some point in the last three days.

If you know anyone who is planning to travel to ANY Hawaiian island, not just Maui, tell them to cancel their trip. Resources are extremely limited as is. Advocate for climate change mitigation efforts locally, wherever that is for you. The fire was exacerbated by drought conditions that have worsened due to climate change.
Lastly, remember that these are people's HOMES that burned, and Native Hawaiian cultural artifacts that have been lost. Stop thinking of Hawaiʻi (or any "tourist destination" location, really) as an "escape" or a "paradise." If that's the only way you recognized my home... I'm glad I got your attention somehow, but I would ask that you challenge that perspective and prioritize local and native voices. For transparency, I don't currently live in Lāhainā, I've been following efforts from Honolulu. My parents and brother have been updating me and I've been following friends and family who are doing immediate response work. I'm doing my best to find reliable and current sources, but if I need to update something, please let me know. If you're going to try to convince me that tourism is necessary for our recovery, news flash ***IT'S NOT***!
Thanks for reading.

Danny's Daycare Part 3
        [Master List]
Danny sighed, picking up the last of the toys and dusting his hands off. Today had been an all-time max of six kids. Ember had been a lifesaver (ha) taking over the majority of tasks for the day, knowing he wasn’t mentally present. Lunch Lady had stepped up as well, playing with the kids Ember didn’t have her eyes on and letting Danny take as many breaks as he needed.
            He felt ridiculous. He barely knew the man, he shouldn’t be so shaken.
            Trying to focus on something else, he thought about the recent growth of the daycare. He had known from the beginning that if the daycare was successful he’d need to hire help, but he hadn’t thought about it much more than that. With his duplicates and Ember and the Lunch Lady’s help he had a handle. Dora worked more in the background, helping Danny with paperwork and purchasing supplies (mostly clothes) for the kids. Some of the other ghosts who’d originally offered their help had gotten caught up in other things (read; obsessions) and hadn’t been around.
            It was fine.
            Hiring help was going to be even more difficult with Ember and Lunch Lady around, anyone he hired would have questions about their appearances. As it was, the parents were already getting confused about why they’d never met the other staff at the daycare.
            He hadn’t taken a day off since opening the daycare and while hiring someone who would actually help was tempting, it wasn’t likely. He didn’t have any applicants as of yet and most of the parents didn’t have kids looking for part time work as a childcare worker. He was here to help those who already had jobs keep said jobs. Between the daycare, the realms, Jazz, his friends, and Gotham University asking if he’d like to teach some engineering classes, Danny was entirely booked. He didn’t have time to vet new employees.
            It had been two weeks since he’d managed to do brunch with Jazz.
            All he wanted to do was pass out in bed and enjoy that tomorrow was Saturday, and he could sleep in before going to the realms. But tonight he was supposed to bring Mrs. Bianchi’s family dinner. He grimaced, remembering the man he’d saved a few weeks prior and offered a job when he got out of the hospital. The man who’d gratefully accepted the offer and planned on building the fence for Danny’s Daycare. The man who apparently had enemies that sought him out the moment he left the safety of his own home.
            Although it wasn’t uncommon, not everyone was so understanding of those who became goons. Mrs. Bianchi was struggling to keep her and her family together. Her daughter, Allegra, had been a regular face at his daycare every day since he’d gotten the call and after hearing about her father, he’d offered to bring them dinner to help out. It took a lot of convincing, but finally, she’d allowed it.
            So, no break tonight. But that was alright.
            The Bianchi’s needed a break more than he did.
            And he needed to help.
            His apartment was, thankfully, very close by, and he’d already prepared the casserole ahead of time. They would only need to throw it in the oven for twenty minutes to warm it up, but he wanted to do something extra nice, something that showed he was thinking about them. An hour later, with a casserole and a plate of fresh cookies in hand, Danny made his way to the Bianchi’s.
            “Mr. Nightingale!” A voice called out warmly. He paused, a short way from the front door, looking for the voice. A dark-haired woman was crouched by the front garden, herbs in hand. “I’m Mia, mama said you’d be coming by.”
            Returning her smile, he nodded. “Hi Mia, you can call me Danny. I brought dinner?” She nodded towards the door and led him inside.
            The home was warm and welcoming, knick knacks and tchotchkes decorated every surface and wall, family pictures sat among them, it was a beautiful home. Not that he knew what a home was supposed to feel or look like.
            Mia led him into the kitchen and directed him to place the goodies he’d brought on the stovetop. Just as he’d set down the containers of food, a small body crashed into his legs, he managed to keep his balance.
            “’Llegra!” Mia shouted. “Sorry Mr.- Danny.”
            Danny crouched down to speak with Allegra, tell her hello and ask how she was doing, but she immediately crawled into his arms and wrapped her own around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.
            “Allegra, that is-” Mia started, sounding tired.
            “It’s okay.” Danny stood up, the girl held close in his arms. He didn’t mention the wet spot on his shoulder. “I’m sure little miss Allegra just wanted to say hello.” He rubbed her back soothingly. “Is your mother home?” He asked, hoping he sounded older than he was. He wanted to sound like a grownup- an adult who knew what he was doing. Not some kid with a surplus of wealth and a gung-ho attitude.
            Mia hesitated a moment, still looking like she wanted to make Allegra get down but decided better of it. “She’s this way.”
            Carrying Allegra, Danny followed the older girl. The two sisters looked a lot alike with dark wavy hair, thick eyebrows, and strong cheekbones and it was clear Mia felt close with Allegra. Why did Danny keep running into siblings who reminded him of his and Jazz’s relationship? Not every sibling duo is the same as his!
            In the living room he found a woman who looked exactly like Mia, or he supposed, the other way around, just a bit older. There were gray hairs in her raven black hair and laugh lines and crow’s feet adorning her face. She was still beautiful. She was going through a pile of photos with a sad look on her face. She looked up as they walked into the room and masked her pain. He knew that feeling all too well.
            “Mrs. Bianchi, it’s a pleasure to see you again.” He shifted the squirming child in his arms. “The casserole just needs to be reheated and I made brownies.”
            Mrs. Bianchi gave her daughter a look. Mia gently pulled Allegra out of Danny’s arms and left. Danny wanted to ask what that was about but gave the woman time to arrange her thoughts. “I didn’t trust you.” She started. “My Victor told me… you’d offered him a job. I’d heard that before and it ended with him getting shot in an alleyway.”
            She let out a shuddering breath, placing her fingers on a picture of what he could only assume was her late husband. “But what would a scumbag have to gain from saving a dying stranger in an alleyway?" Her voice was almost a whisper. “He insisted on trusting you and I trusted him.”
            “I’m so sorry for your loss, Mrs. Bianchi. I- I don’t know what you’re going through but… I’d like to help in any way that I can. If you’ll let me.” He understood pain he understood pain she’d never understand but he had no idea what losing your spouse was like. He’d never lost anyone to death, not like this.
            Her eyes pierced his, he tried not to fidget as she peered into his soul. “Maybe he was right to trust you Mr. Nightingale.” She stood, putting the pictures aside. “Thank you for looking after Allegra, I believe you’ll be seeing more of her for a while yet. And,” She paused. “I believe you’ll see an influx in children in the coming days.”
            He wasn’t sure what she meant, but didn’t ask as he was shown outside soon after.
~~~
            Exhaustion was a feeling Danny was getting used to. To be completely frank, he’d been getting used to the feeling since he was a child, and his parents Jack and Maddie forgot his seventh birthday because they’d gotten the idea to create a ghost portal. That was more of a mental and emotional exhaustion but when he was fourteen and died because of said ghost portal… that was a physical exhaustion.
            Still, he wasn’t sure the last time he’d felt this bone deep exhaustion in his human form. He remembered the last time he’d felt this way in his ghost form he remembered the feeling of the blade slipping under his skin he remembered the taunts Jack and Maddie threw at him as he cried and screamed he remembered dissociating to save himself from-
            “Hey, why don’t you move away from the edge?”
            Seriously, how were so many people sneaking up on Danny these days? First Tim, then Damian, now this guy?! Looking up (Or maybe it was down? Danny was on his back so the man in front of him appeared to be upside down) Danny recognized Nightwing and sighed. He’d been so clear with the others about not running into vigilantes, and now here he was… running into one of them.
            Hey, at least it was one of the supposedly nicer ones.
            “I’m not gonna jump man.” Danny groaned. “Too tired anyways.”
            Gravel crunched under the vigilante’s feet as he approached. “I’d still feel a lot more comfortable if you weren’t one careless move away from becoming a pancake.”
            Danny chuckled. “Your comfort isn’t exactly my concern.” Nightwing came into view, frowning. “Don’t look at me like that, man. You’ll make me feel bad.”
            “Well we wouldn’t want that.” His tone was sarcastic, and his frown had turned into a smirk. “If my discomfort isn’t your concern why should your happiness be mine?”
            The halfa stifled a laugh. “Aren’t you supposed to be a hero or something?”
            “Vigilante.” Nightwing amended.
            “Same difference.”
            Nightwing crouched beside Danny, watching him like a hawk. It was uncomfortable. The angle Nightwing was watching him from while Danny was lying on his back reminded him of-
            Bolting upright, Danny shifted away from the edge and Nightwing simultaneously; the vigilante watched him with confusion, reaching out to help until he realized Danny was hyperventilating. “Hey- hey, hey, breathe with me, okay? In,” He took in an exaggerated breath. “Out.” He exhaled loudly and repeated the action a few times.
            Danny evened out his breathing easily (he didn’t need to breathe so it wasn’t difficult once his brain remembered that fact) and leaned against the HVAC behind him. “Sorry.” He managed, embarrassed, looking out towards the city.
            The vigilante watched him for another minute before fully sitting down and following Danny’s gaze. “So what are you doing up here?”
            “I like heights, needed a good view after the last few weeks.” They lapsed into comfortable silence after that, though Danny was sure Nightwing was planning on asking a few more questions. He’d enjoy the silence for now.
            The city was much louder than Amity on its loudest night and he couldn’t say he loved the sounds, but he loved that it sounded nothing like his hometown. His hometown that sounded like silence and willing ignorance and purposeful arrogance and bigotry. His feelings towards Amity were mixed but mostly leaned towards ‘would only visit again if it were a matter of life and death’ (and even then he might not because he was already alive and dead).
            Gotham’s least desirable feature was the smog that blocked out the night sky. It had been too long since Danny had been able to see the clear night sky, trace the constellations with his eyes, and calm his breathing while reciting facts about space. Lady Gotham was going to owe him big time after all this was done.
            “Where are you from?” Nightwing asked, settling on one of the most boring questions he could have asked.
            Danny rolled his eyes. “What an original question, Nightwing. I’m assuming my accent gave it away?” The vigilante nodded. “Illinois.” He had no intention of mentioning Amity Park to anyone in Gotham. Tucker had given Danny and his sister new identities after the Incident, and he had promised no one would be able to figure out who they had been before. Danny tended to trust Tucker’s abilities, but when it came to Amity Park, the Fenton’s, the GIW, and ghosts, he leaned towards paranoid. Plus, the birds and bats were notorious for getting whatever information they wanted.
            “Why on Earth would you move to Gotham?” Nightwing laughed.
            “Someone asked for my help.” Danny admitted. “I can’t say no when someone wants help so… here I am.”
            Nightwing nodded, knowingly. “And what do you do?”
            “Opened a daycare in the Bowery.” The vigilante’s eyebrows lifted, surprised. “The friend who wanted my help has a friend who…. well they’re very rich and it’s entirely free. I just run things, make sure parents are able to go to work without leaving their kids home alone.” Danny shrugged.
            “That sounds really helpful.” Nightwing smiled. “So the exhaustion..?”
            “Oh yeah, kids are a nightmare. Not something I ever thought I’d do, but I’m good with them- I had a really good example of what not to do.” He chuckled bitterly earning a frown from the vigilante, but he didn’t notice it. “Even with how exhausting they are… they’re good kids. Like, Marco, he told me his dad used to leave him home alone while he was at work- the kids five! But his poor dad could either quit his job, leave his kid home alone, or turn to gooning. So…. Daycare.”
            Nightwing’s smile had only grown through Danny’s little rant. “I’m sure Marco and his dad are both grateful to you.”
            Danny stood, dusting his pants. “They should be grateful to the person who asked for my help, I’m not doing all that much myself, wouldn’t have even thought to do it if they hadn’t asked. You on the other hand, you guys do a lot for this city. No one asked, and I’m sure people don’t always thank you.” He offered the vigilante a hand and pulled him up.
            Now, Danny was pretty confident in his appearance, but when Nightwing stood up straight Danny was once again reminded that he was only 5’6”. Nightwing was clearly half a foot (or more) taller, and it was…. Well it was annoying. Pushing down that observation, Danny turned towards the rooftop exit door. “I’ll see you around, Nightwing.”
            “Hey, wait-”
            But Danny really didn’t want the birds and bats getting too close to him, so he let the door swing closed behind him, turned invisible, and flew back to his apartment.
            He was really tired.
~~~
            Danny woke to a crying sound. It took him a full panic-stricken thirty seconds to remember the kittens he’d taken in and relax marginally. He’d been giving the sick on its medicine, feeding them on a schedule, scooping the litter, and everything else he thought he was supposed to do, but he’d been busy and hadn’t gotten around to spending much time with them.
            Or naming them.
            Ancients dammit Danny!
            Rolling out of bed, Danny followed the crying sound coming from the living room. Mama cat was sitting on the couch cleaning herself, and the three little kittens were trying to find a way to follow her up. She clearly wasn’t interested in helping them.
            Dropping down next to them, Danny held out his hand. The orange kitten -despite being sick and making little wheezing sounds at all times- was clinging to the side of the couch a few inches off of the ground and crying for help. Gently, Danny cupped his hands around the little cat’s body and pulled him away from the couch.
            “Hey little guy, curiosity killed the cat, so I’d be careful if I were you.” He held the kitten close and scratched under his chin. He nipped at Danny’s finger and twisted his body to escape, only Danny’s quick reflexes kept the kitten from falling to the floor. “Woooah there! Curious little guy aren’t you?”
            He set the orange kitten down and noticed the calico had disappeared. Looking around frantically, he found her on the opposite side of his apartment, (seemingly) looking out the balcony door. “How’d you get all the way over there?” He chuckled, following the kitten and looking out the door. “You can’t really see the stars in Gotham.” She meowed in response.
            After a few moments of staring out into the starless sky, Danny noticed the calico toddle away from him. It seemed Mama had decided she’d had enough time to herself and had jumped back down into the reach of her children. The kittens barreled into her; she laid down so they could nurse, and Danny watched, an idea coming to him.
            He felt the need to make their names official, so he found a website that made custom nametags for pets and put in his order. Instead of putting away his phone he snapped a picture of the cats and sent it to his newest contact.
Danny: Thank you again for all of your help the other night, Damian!
Danny: [Image of three kittens nestled into their mother’s belly]
Danny: I decided on names for them. The orange cat is Curiosity (like the mars rover lol), the Calico is Cosmos, and the white one is Spectre. Mama cat is Mars but I’m gonna call her Marzipan!
Danny: This is Danny by the way.
~~~
            Damian couldn’t fathom who was messaging him at this time of night, but he wished they would stop. Father kept looking at him strangely from the batcomputer every time his phone vibrated. They’d called it an early night due to father still recovering from an injury and Damian having a test in his first class the following morning. Damian had just finished taking his gear off and was planning on hitting the showers just as his phone began buzzing.
            Father quirked an eyebrow at him as he swiped his phone away. “I’m sure it is Grayson spamming the family group chat with meaningless memes again.” He explained nonchalantly.
            It was not, in fact, Grayson.
Unknown: Thank you again for all of your help the other night, Damian!
Unknown: [Image of three kittens nestled into their mother’s belly]
Unknown: I decided on names for them. The orange cat is Curiosity (like the mars rover lol), the Calico is Cosmos, and the white one is Spectre. Mama cat is Mars but I’m gonna call her Marzipan!
Unknown: This is Danny by the way
            Damian had not given that fool his number to be spammed with useless information- what kind of name was curiosity? Why were they all seemingly space themed? Despite his annoyance, Damian responded.
Damian: How is the sick one healing?
            He didn’t expect a quick response, it was almost four in the morning, why had the man been up so early anyways? He got a response almost immediately.
Unknown: Curiosity’s healing pretty well although he hates the medicine and it’s a battle every time I have to give it to him!
Damian: That is unacceptable. Fighting a sick cat will not contribute to its healing.
Unknown: He hasn’t missed a dose or anything, he just squirms a lot!
Damian: Do you require assistance?
            Damian refused to change the man’s name in his phone until he knew his last name. He would not be calling him…. Danny. Unfortunately, Damian was only a volunteer at the vet clinic and as such had not been privy to any of Danny’s personal information and therefore, did not know his last name. It felt strange to ask for it.
Unknown: Nah it’s fine, just wanted to show you they’re doing all right and I appreciate you helping me figure this all out!
            He did not feel a spike of happiness shoot through him- that would be ridiculous. Something this simple from a complete stranger, albeit a strange who listened to all of his advice and took him seriously when others never did, would not make him happy!
Damian: I could not let someone completely untrained take care of animals, especially when one was sick.
Unknown: :’) You do care
            “Damian?” Father’s voice cut into his thoughts. Looking up he realized he’d stopped short of the shower room and had ended up having the entire conversation over text in the entryway between the main cave and the showers. Father raised an eyebrow, glancing between his son and the phone. “Is everything all right?”
            He nodded sharply, turning off the phone and pushing away the ridiculous feelings he’d been having. “I’m fine father. I’ll just shower and head to bed for the night.” He didn’t bother looking at his phone again for the rest of the night.
Hello Metalo
I love the Disgraced Witches's Den, they are just chilling and having fun.
Has Walden and Mr McNair gotten back in contact with Evy since under Sirius support she is back in society ? Also, is Sirius giving Bella access to black gold or is her father? I remember how Bella helped Sirius out when he ran away...
Walden has always kept in touch with Evy, though before Sirius, it was very hush-hush. Now that she's been accepted back by most of the younger crowd, Walden publicly acknowledges her (also, it's helpful that she supports him with money, even paid for his wedding and a home for him). Her parents do not acknowledge her at all. If you ask them, she is dead as far as they're concerned.
Bella is not allowed to step foot inside Gringotts, or any public institution (unless it's St Mungo and she personally needs treatment there- otherwise she's not allowed into the Hospital as a visitor. Special requests were granted for her to attend her father's funeral, since it was so public and on a semi-public magical place). So she hardly needs gold, since she has nowhere to spend it anyway, in theory. However, she did take some trips to some shops in Knockturn, where she trusts no one would call the Aurors.
She also goes to Muggle London, since no one knows her there; Sirius and Andromeda sometimes convince her to join them there to eat at a restaurant or just get her to see something other than a rotation of manors.
She has access to gold or pounds. (Sometimes she orders via mail from magical stores all around the world, mostly gifts for her loved ones or dresses for herself, and her favourite perfumes haha). When she lived with her dad, she was too drugged up to want anything, but then she moved in with Narcissa and you can imagine, Narcissa paid for everything Bella wanted, or handed her gold/pounds if Bella asked.
Now she lives with Evy, but both Cygnus and Sirius go and leave a bag of money for Bella every month in case she needs it for whatever, without being asked. And since Andromeda moved there, too, Cygnus and Sirius also gave gold to her. Now, it's just Sirius.
Cygnus left the majority of his assets to Bella, Andromeda and Narcissa, but he set a little something apart for Dora and Draco, in the interest of being fair to his grandchildren, too, even if Draco hardly needs more gold. (Same for Pollux, he left A LOT, like outrageous amounts of gold for Draco, Marvolo and Orion even if neither kids could possibly ever need it, but he wanted to be fair to all his great-grandsons. However he was an old-fashioned bigot, so he left nothing for Elara, since she's a girl, and nothing for Dora, since he and Irma never accepted her because of her blood.)
So Andromeda has her own gold now, though it's not a fortune or anything; I think Cygnus was wealthy enough, but nothing ridiculously so (like say Sirius or Lucius or other first born sons; Cygnus was more like Alphard. Rich, but not filthy rich), so after his wealth got divided in five, it's not a huge amount for Andromeda, but enough that she would be able to sustain herself independently if need arouse. (Both Bella and Cissa offered for Andromeda to have their share of the inheritance, since they hardly need it, but Andromeda firmly refused.)
However, Bella cannot have access to her gold, either inherited from Cygnus or the enormous wealth in Lestrange vault. So, for now, it's Sirius that takes care of Bella's needs, and also for Andromeda (even if she tries to refuse, but he won't hear of it), and he insists he's the one to pay for whatever Dora needs, and advised Dora to leave whatever she got for Cygnus untouched for now, even if she is seventeen. But Dora already has plans to get a job as soon as she's done with Hogwarts and earn her own gold, because she's very driven and independent, and Bella encourages her thoroughly and also trains Dora whenever Dora is on holiday, in both duelling skills and Potion Making.
Druella has her own gold, as inheritance combo from her own father, grandparents and an assortment of odd uncle and aunts, but since both Bella and Andromeda are living with Evy, Druella moved in with Narcissa after Cygnus died, because Narcissa (even if not close to her mum, is dutiful, and in her view it's necessary and a social obligation to take care of a mother and not abandon her to live alone. Lucius is *delighted*, I tell you. Poor man. But at least he has many opportunities to suck up to Druella, trying to make sure Druella will leave her gold to Draco, because hey, Lucius is of the opinion that more is always better, even if not remotely needed).
To Walburga's horror, after Cygnus died, now she has to take care of her own mother, since she's the only child of Irma's left, so now Irma is living in Grimmauld, and it is a very big house, but it somehow feels tiny for Walburga lol (she's using Sirius' old hiding spots to hide from her mother when she needs space). Thankfully, Irma adores her grandsons and great grandchildren, so she's mostly preoccupied with them, and when she doesn't do that, she likes to find ways to be a bitch to Astrid and Isadora, so she doesn't have much time to pester Walburga. Irma was always a terror, a veritable force of nature, and now she is the OLDEST living Black, the matriarch of the entire horrible family. Plus, she has a way with Sirius, whom she always spoiled since he could crawl, and Sirius isn't inclined to go against her. Irma is living her best life, even if she misses her husband dearly. To be fair, Irma aways lived her best life, but now her social status is basically God like lol 😂
That was probably more information than you asked for lol, but I like to think about this fic all too often and ramble about it, so sorry!
cw: descriptions of injuries
There was a place she used to go to after the Order had days like these. Bad days. Ones that left her numb.
Historically, the place is both tangible and not—a lonely tower at the Cat’s Cradle, and once there, a few long moments of contemplation. But her old home is a long way away, and so Beatrice finds the part of her mind that needs this kind of treatment and sends it elsewhere. As for her body, she deigns to get to work instead of separating herself. The OCS may not be her world anymore, but there are wounded. People she cares for.
In the wreckage of their makeshift hideout, Beatrice wonders if maybe it’s never been the events of the day that seep the feeling from her. Maybe it’s always been this—this thing she must do to herself in order to succeed. Months of wandering have not divested her of the need to perform. The months have, however, been a reminder of all she’s lost.
She sets her feelings aside. There are things to do.
The first order of business: Camila’s shoulder is out of socket, and for all their collective expertise, Beatrice remains the best candidate to set it. Years ago, before the Order had swept her away, she’d spent a long summer volunteering in a hospital. It’s not the medical training she’d received afterwards, but the exposure was, at the very least, an advantage.
“Ready?” She asks, although she knows that Camila is always ready.
Camila, in the kind way she does all things, just smiles as if Beatrice is the one that needs the reassurance. She nods. “Go for it.”
Camila doesn’t flinch. She lets out a long, measured breath and she says, “ow” and she laughs at herself. Beatrice would like to take the time to laugh with her, but her joy is locked up in that faraway place. She squeezes Camila’s other shoulder, helps her into a sling made of a torn shirt, and moves on to the next.
Sister Dora has twisted her wrist. It’s discolored and swollen, but her bones are, thankfully, intact.
“A tarask,” she explains, “I thought it’d… well, I thought it’d kill me but…”
But she came back, Beatrice thinks to herself, searching the wreckage for wood to make a splint. She saved you.
She blinks that away—she has to. Sister Dora must notice her reticence. She doesn’t complete her thought. So Beatrice secures Sister Dora’s arm, and she moves on.
Yasmine has taken a glancing blow to the head, and Mother Superion has opted to stay up with her in the wake of the fight to monitor the damage.
“I’m okay,” Yasmine says when Beatrice comes by, holding up a placating hand. “I mean—I remember my name, so. So that’s good, right?”
Superion offers the smallest of smirks. It’s fond, not hard-won. “Yes, Yasmine,” she says, and rises up on unsteady footing. It’s not the new, halo-resurrected Superion.
“What happened?” Beatrice asks, firmer than she’d meant to. Emotions are nebulous when she settles into this way.
Superion shakes her head. “Nothing that should concern you. A few bruises.” She gives Beatrice a meaningful look—one she’s not present enough to catalogue. “There’s a cot in the back. Rest. We’re fine here.”
It sounds like an order, and even though she’s put the church behind her, she still respects Mother Superion. She can still recognize that she’s done all she can for the group, within reason. So she makes her way to the back room, feeling nothing. She sits on the edge of the cot, feeling nothing. She shrugs off her outer layers, feeling nothing.
Her mind has been in that faraway place, however, and as she returns to herself, everything sinks in.
While information comes in in pieces, on thing is for certain—there’s pain, everywhere. It would make the most sense to take stock of the worst places, the ones that need her immediate attention, but when feeling rushes back into her, the only thing she can think is that she needs to get out of this room and to wherever she’s gone—
There’s a jolt, razor sharp in the already excruciating throb of her abdomen. It’s quite obviously from when she’d been launched across a courtyard. The intensity winds her halfway to standing and her hip smarts as soon as she’s fallen back to the cot. She tells herself several times that she needs to get herself back in that empty place, that world where she feels nothing. Above all things, she needs to be there because she needs to find Ava.
A week prior, there had been a desperate call for help, a train from the small Finnish town she’d wandered into the month before, and Beatrice had found herself right back in the fray. Seeing the faces of her friends again after all their time apart had been bittersweet. When the fight had come to them, she’d remembered the last words Lilith had said to her. A holy war.
Despite her best efforts, she’s in the middle of it.
“Fuck,” she says, because she curses now. Because she knows that her knee is going to give out if she tries to stand. Because she’s effectively trapped herself in this room.
Frustration wells up in her like a lit fuse.
Assess the damage, she thinks, because what the hell else can she do?
The buttons of her shirt are slow work, her hands are weak from gripping her machine gun, her knives, the side of a building as she hoisted herself and Yasmine back to safety.
God is lost to her now, but it is a miracle that none of her injuries have drawn blood. A massive swath of skin along her side is purple and yellow but unbroken—it is the very worst of things. It hurts to draw breath, and hurts even more to bend and pull her pant leg up past her knee, to find the skin there in much the same condition. Upon further inspection, her hip, too, is a wild mess of bruises.
She’s a wreck, and what do they have to show for it? A few inches of ground? A few battered nuns, scrounging up whatever tools they can find?
Ava.
They have Ava. She just… doesn’t know where.
Beatrice had seen it happen as if in a dream.
The blinding light from above, the shockwave that had sent the tarasks flying in all directions, but hadn’t so much as nudged the sisters. When she’d looked, it was Ava’s form in the center of the light—Beatrice would know it anywhere, in any world—flickering in and out. She remembers shouting, desperate, stumbling through the wreckage. The details from there are hard to recollect. It’s when she’d been grabbed and thrown, it’s when the fight had resumed and she’d lost sight of Ava.
But she had seen her. That she’s certain of.
She closes her eyes, wincing as she tilts her head to the ceiling. The breath she tries to take is shallow and does nothing to steady herself.
“Beatrice?”
The pain of movement is forgotten, the voice like a ribbon of gold around her heart.
There’s Ava. There’s Ava.
The breath is gone in a rush, and Beatrice forgets the rest of the pain and she tries desperately to stand, to run, to move. Her leg gives out and Ava’s on her in a second, easing her back down.
“Ava,” she says, voice breaking, throat tight, “Ava.”
Ava kneels in front of her and she takes Ava’s face in her hands and she can’t look away. Suddenly, that place she goes—the one that is empty and lonely is filled with life. Filled with Ava. And she’s here, she’s real and alive and breathtaking in all the ways that Beatrice has loved. Loves. She feels nothing but it, looking at Ava.
“Bea,” Ava says, fingers wrapped around Beatrice’s wrists like they’ve been fused there. “Bea, you—you’re hurt.”
“You’re here,” Beatrice responds—nothing else matters. “Ava, you’re—“ She doesn’t have other words.
It should hurt to speak. It should hurt to lean forward, but then her lips are on Ava’s and nothing hurts, everything aches. Ava makes a small noise that lets loose something in Beatrice’s chest, and she wants to draw Ava closer, but her body betrays her, her whole side lighting up as if on fire. As if to remind her that respite is fleeting. But she doesn’t care, nothing else matters—
Ava notices her wince and pulls away. It hurts to try to pull her back, but still Beatrice tries. “Fuck,” Ava says, voice shaky, “Bea—hold on. You need—“
“I need you to not leave. I’m fine, I promise.”
“I’m not—you’re not fine, your—oh, God, Bea your side—“
Another Beatrice might have taken modesty into consideration. Her shirt is wide open, her trousers undone, and Ava is knelt before her, a hand on her bare knee. She just—she just wants so keenly that the constant, painful reminders of her body’s journey through battle feel like they’re killing her. She wants to pull Ava up and on to her lap, she wants Ava’s mouth on hers again, she wants, she wants, she wants. And maybe it’s her pilgrimage and her seperation from the church that’s allowing her this clear revelation, or maybe it’s just the relief to be in the same room as the girl she loves. Maybe that’s all it’s ever been.
“Let me… shit, I don’t know how good I am at this yet.” Ava focuses down on Beatrice’s splotchy, wounded knee, and the dark room is slowly illuminated by the glow of the Halo.
It feels… itchy, at first. It’s not a scab, but the injury takes on the properties of one—Beatrice tamps down the overwhelming need to scratch or pat at it, but then—as soon as it began—it’s gone. Ava pulls her hand away and the skin is as normal as it’s ever been. An oblong scar where bone is closest to skin from one too many skinned knees, but other than that? Nothing.
“How did you…” Beatrice trails off, swinging her leg back and forth easily.
“I’d… you know, I’d really like to explain it, but, uh. I have no fucking idea.”
Beatrice can’t help it, she laughs, a little hysterical. And then she wants to throw up.
“Don’t—no laughing. Stop it,” Ava says with a worried smile. She sets the tips of her fingers at the massive bruise on Beatrice’s side, and Beatrice can’t tamp down the shiver that rockets through her at the feeling. “Sorry. Sorry, I just need to...” Ava says, her voice thick, “just let me…”
The Halo does its work again, scrubbing her pain from her, raw and red until it’s not anymore. Beatrice takes a breath, and there is no pain.
“Good?” Ava asks.
“Good,” Beatrice responds. She wants that to be the end of it, but when she tries to move in again—“I think there’s another…”
Herein lies the problem. Her hip.
Ava looks down, and they’re in the middle of a war, but Beatrice wonders if she closes her eyes for just a moment, maybe they’ll be back in the Alps. Maybe there, this touch is necessary for another reason. Maybe Ava is looking up at her like this and maybe nothing has ever been wrong.
But they’re in the blown-out remains of a church, and there are demons everywhere, and in her darkest moments she’d worried that this—her and Ava—was lost for good.
Ava hovers over her bruise, and Beatrice nods. Ava is delicate, fingers light over her hipbone. This is not the time to wish for another life, but still she does. And for the first time in months, the wish has legs. It climbs out of that place she goes and it smiles at her, and Ava smiles at her too, proud of her work.
Beatrice draws her in, and the war rages on, but there are no more lonely places.
She has Ava. It’s enough.
