Finally playing through the story mode of the Long Dark (based on the achievement numbers, I'm not one of the only ones who primarily plays the survival mode)
Good shit first - I'm AM for sure enjoying myself. Seeing the old locations in a new light is fun. Having characters to interact with is fun. And the final shot of ep 3 actually made me pause and pay attention.
I made it to ep 4, and I'm starting to see some cracks. I was pretty thoroughly annoyed with the cave-in/sparkplug mechanic when getting through the mines, and then the opening to ep 4 was very... I can see what they were going for, but why let the player start playing again just to have the foregone conclusion of Mackenzie getting captured again? They could have streamlined it much better.
And not to sound like a big ol lefty commie or anything but you can have the Blackrock warden say all the spooky shit you like about Donner and Mathis, I'm still gonna take it with a grain of salt.
Like, you've got a prison warden saying someone in solitary is pure evil. Uh huh. Sure. I know Mathis clocked me a couple times, but like. These are not natives to the island. They're incarcerated. Even before the Collapse, they were getting the shit end of the stick. And going by real-world catastrophes, people in prison systems are among the first to be abandoned. They've been here, scrounging for who knows how long. Of course they're desperate to get off the island.

Chapter 16: On a Mission
Mackenzie finally made it to the power plant with much difficulty. He had to fight the cold elements and avoid hungry wolves. Unfortunately, he was having zero luck getting the power up and running. To his surprise, the old phone on the wall started to ring.
Mackenzie picked up the phone, wondering if it was the mysterious lady sabotaging the convicts. “Hello?”
Unknown female voice. “Me again, so, they sent you to check on the power plant.”
“y…. yeah…… I mean, that’s what they asked me to do.”
“You always do what hardened criminals ask you to do?”
“I didn’t have much of a choice.” Mackenzie’s mind flashes to little Sage and how Mathis threatened her.
“You know you won’t be able to get the power back on, right? The issue with the power…. has nothing to do with the power plant.”
“Yes, I figured. I mean…. how are you so sure?”
“Trust me, I just know.”
“Trust you? Ok, but trust goes both ways. What’s your name?
“Alright then, you can call me Jace.”
“Okay, nice to meet you, Jace. How do you fit into all of this? Are you in trouble?” Mackenzie asked.
“That’s a long story. My main concern is making sure that psycho Donner doesn’t make it out of Solitary. If he does, we’re all in trouble, Mack.” Jace continues. “Listen, you want to know what’s going on, with the power and all that? I can tell you, but first, I need your help.”
“How did you end up in BlackRock?”
“My car broke down with the first aurora. Well, not so much as ‘broke down’ as it just stopped working. I wondered for hours before I found the fence leading to the guard tower. The next thing I knew, I heard gunshots. It was…...horrible. I found the bodies that were left out: the guards, prison workers, civilians, and the innocent. The convicts had executed them. I don’t know if anyone is coming to help, but I gotta do what I can to keep these monsters locked up.” Jace explained.
“So, what is the situation with Donner?” Mackenzie asked next.
“I guess you don’t follow the news much, huh? Donner is a Psychopath. I hear his old man, Mathis, isn’t much better.”
“Yeah, I can confirm Mathis is not a great person.” Mackenzie agreed with a frown. “What is the worst that could happen if Donner gets out? He gets stuck out in the wilderness, freezes to death, or gets eaten by something.” Mackenzie tried to reason.
“Wrong; if Donner gets out, he will make it his personal mission to find and hurt every living human he can get his hands on.”
“Is there anyone you are worried about in particular?”
“Never mind that,” Jace said, avoiding the question.
“Ok, so how are we going to make sure he stays in solitary?”
“Well, that depends; how can I trust you will help? What is in it for you?” Jace pressed.
“Mathis is holding a kid that was in my care hostage. So yeah, I don’t like him much. And he’s got something else I need.” Mackenzie explained, thinking of Sage and the metal case that belonged to Astrid.
“Well……shit, I’m sorry to hear that. I didn’t realize a kid was involved.” Jace said with a tone of sympathy. “I’ll tell you what. You do something for me, and I’ll find a way to help you get your kid back and whatever else you need. Deal?”
“It’s a deal.”
“Ok, so listen up. Even with the power out, there are physical mechanisms that the convicts can manipulate to get Donner out. We need to fix things so they can’t break him out.” Jace explained.
“And how do we do that?” Mackenzie asked.
“We go underneath the system and bust it up. I got the whole blueprint of the place. You’ll go into the steam tunnels. You’ll find an access door in the rock face just outside the power plant, on the other side of the spillway. According to these blueprints, it leads you…right to the old locking mechanism under solitary.” “Ok…. then what?”
“You tear out or smash anything that looks remotely like a switch….you got it?” Asked Jace.
“Yeah, I get it. Sabotage the thing.”
“Exactly.”
*******
Back at the prison, Mackenzie explains how he could not restore power at the power plant. He is taken back to his cell.
Mackenzie steeled himself as Mathis approached his cell.
Mackenzie's hands curled into fists. "Where is she, Mathis?"
"Where's who?" Mathis examined his nails. "You'll have to be more specific."
"Sage." Mackenzie advanced until he was at the door's bars. "I did what you asked; now where is she?"
Mathis' smile turned cruel. He patted his pocket. "The little mouse? She's right here, safe and sound."
Mackenzie Grabbed the metal bars. "Give her to me!"
Mathis opens the cell door, shoving Mackenzie back. His men force Mackenzie down to a chair and tie him up.
Mathis paces back and forth, clearly agitated. “The problem I have, pilot, is that you keep lying to me.”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“You see…...that’s exactly the kind of thing that PISSES ME OFF!” Mathis yelled. “First, you pretend not to know anything about the case. Second, you hide your little rat from me. And then you go behind my back trying to mess up my plans with…...an accomplice.” Mathis growled.
“Mathis…I” Mackenzie tried to defend himself or reason with the madman but was interrupted.
“SHUT your mouth. All I hear are lies, I know……everything.”
Two guards approached, wheeling a gurney between them. Mackenzie's breath caught in his throat as Franklin's lifeless body came into view. The guards wheeled the body past Mackenzie's cell without a glance. Mackenzie watched Franklin's face disappear down the hall, his stomach twisting. Franklin had only been trying to help them. And it had gotten him killed.
"What a shame."
Mathis was studying him, eyes glinting.
Rage boiled up in Mackenzie again. “You monster. He didn’t do anything.”
“I know, he was one of the ‘good guys’, but he sang like a bird when we laid into him. He couldn’t give you and your friend up quickly enough.” Mathis sneered. “The only reason I kept you alive was because I thought you could fly us out of here. But now I understand that we could be kings here. So, you’ve outlived your usefulness to me, pilot.” With that, Mathis lifted a metal club he was holding. Ready to beat Mackenzie to death.
Mackenzie tensed, ready for the harsh blow, but then a rumbling explosion rocked the prison. The floor buckled under Mackenzie, tossing his chair over and throwing him to the ground. Mathis was knocked to his hands and knees. Dust rained down from the ceiling. As the dust cleared, Mathis scrambled to his feet and exited the cell, looking to see what had happened.
In the aftermath, Mackenzie's ears rang. He found that he could break his bindings and stumbled to his feet, his senses on high alert.
“What the hell is going on,” Mathis yells.
Mackenzie stumbles out of the cell and watches the drama unfold in the ruined hallway. Some hallways have collapses, fire, and smoke everywhere.
One of Mathis’ men answers Mathis. “The detonators… they blew too early!”
“You MORONS! What about Solitary?” Mathis yelled.
“They’re clearing the rubble now. There’s fire everywhere.” Heller answered.
Mathis turns and sees Mackenzie; he stalks towards him. “I suppose you’re pleased with yourself, you better hope nothing happened…...”
(Jace voice comes through the intercom on the wall): “Greetings. Convict assholes. This is your friendly neighborhood prison hacker, checking in to say…. it’s lockdown time.”
The screech of metal against metal pierced the air as the security gate slid into place with a resounding clang, severing Will Mackenzie from Mathis. The hardened criminal's face twisted with rage; his hand shot out, fingers curling into the fabric of Mackenzie's shirt and yanking him close enough to feel his hot, acrid breath.
"Listen here, pilot," Mathis snarled, "I'm going to destroy everything you love."
In that moment of heated threat, Mackenzie's hand deftly maneuvered into the coarse material of Mathis's pocket. His large, calloused fingers found the fragile quiver of Sage's tiny frame. He curled his fingers around her with utmost care, shielding her from further harm.
Unaware of the rescue operation under his nose, Mathis gave one last shove, propelling Mackenzie backward. As the distance between them grew, Mackenzie tightened his grip on Sage, ensuring her safety in the palm of his hand. He watched as Mathis stormed away down the other hallway.
"Everything," Mathis spat, his voice echoing through the clattering din of chaos surrounding them.
Once Mathis was out of sight, Mackenzie turned his attention to the trembling child in the palm of his hand. Her wide brown eyes brimmed with tears. She was relieved, but the sting of betrayal lingered, evident in her trembling lips. Bruises mottled her delicate arms and legs. Tears streamed down her tiny face as she clutched at his thumb, sobbing.
Anger burned in Mackenzie's chest at the sight. "It's okay," he soothed, "I've got you now."
The borrower girl flinched away from his voice. "You let him take me!" she cried. "You were supposed to protect me!"
Mackenzie winced. She was right. He had failed her. "I'm so sorry," he whispered. "I won't let anyone hurt you again. You have my word."
She peered up at him, eyes wary. But she must have seen the truth in his face because she relaxed slightly. Exhaustion seemed to overtake her anger and fear as she sagged against his palm.
He brought her closer to his chest, shielding her from view. "Everything will be alright," he murmured.
She was so small. So fragile. The thought of Mathis--or anyone--harming her made his blood boil.
“Uhhh…...Mack. Whatever you’re going to do, you better do it Soon,” Jace’s voice announced from the intercom.
Mackenzie could feel Sage flinch at the new voice. The tiny girl looked around, confused. Mackenzie cupped the borrower girl closer to his chest, shielding her from the smoke. She was so small--the fumes could suffocate her.
"It's too smoky," he rasped. I have to get you out of here. But first, I have to get something from the warden's office, and then we’ll be out of here."
The acrid smoke stung his eyes, but he blinked through it, focused on the way ahead. He had to keep moving. Get to the warden's office, get the case, and get out of here.
Trembling within the protective curve of his fingers, Sage peered up at him, her brown eyes wide with terror. As the heat from the nearby flames licked at their surroundings, in an effort to avoid inhaling the smoke, she buried her face into the soft wool, its scent familiar.
Mackenzie raced on through the smoky corridors, focused single-mindedly on reaching the warden's office. The air was growing hotter, more choked with fumes. Flames licked at the walls as the fire spread.
He could hear the structure groaning under the strain, ceiling tiles crashing around him. The prison came apart at the seams, but Mackenzie pushed forward relentlessly.
Cursing under his breath, Mackenzie turned and sprinted down an adjacent hallway, searching for a way around. But he could feel the heat intensifying against his skin, the smoke burning his lungs. Time was running out.
With a final burst of effort, Mackenzie pushed the door open to the warden's office. Chest heaving, he scanned the room frantically until his eyes landed on the hard case.
Mackenzie's hands trembled with adrenaline and relief as he grabbed the case. He'd made it. Now, he just had to get out.
Mackenzie clutched the hard case tightly as he burst out of the warden's office and into the smoke-filled hallway. All around him, the prison was succumbing to the ravenous flames. The air shimmered with heat and cascading sparks.
He had to go to the steam tunnels, which were his only way out now. There was an entrance to them in the courtyard.
They emerged into the cool night air, coughing. The borrower girl sagged against him in exhaustion and relief.
Skidding around a corner, he spotted a door leading down to the tunnels. Mackenzie wrenched it open, rushing down the concrete steps into the dark passage below.
It was marginally cooler down here. He moved swiftly through the dim tunnels, his footsteps echoing against the walls. He knew if he kept following the tunnels, he would make it back to the power plant.
Mackenzie gently brushed a thumb over her tiny, bruised arms. "You're safe now," he whispered.
Her hands slowly uncurled from his shirt. But she stayed nestled in his palm; her relief was palpable. But there was still a flicker of fear in her eyes. Fear of what might have happened if Mackenzie hadn't retrieved her from the clutches of the cruel Mathis, who had inflicted pain upon her delicate form.
Mackenzie brought her closer, a surge of affection and protectiveness filling his chest. He had failed to save her once before, and he wouldn't fail her again.

Swap AU make my pea-sized brain ping around my head like one of those brick breaker games.
Mathis was on a flight to Great Bear to visit his son in prison. He booked a flight with Archer Remote Transport, flying with a serious woman named Molly who doesn’t seem to particularly like him. Their plane goes down, and he finds himself in a quiet apocalypse.
Molly is a pilot who hunts in her spare time. After her husband died in mysterious circumstances, she’s generally regarded with suspicion by the people around her, and it weighs heavily on her.
Astrid is a doctor in the small town of Thompson’s Crossing. Shes taken over the community centre as a clinic. She would go out and search for crash survivors, but the people here need all her attention.
Mackenzie is a convict who recently got transferred to Blackrock. After one of his guys, a stern man named Jeremiah, got sent here, he got himself sent up to break him out. By the time he reached the prison, that had already happened, so he started searching the island for someone who could get them off it.
Heller takes Jeremiah’s position almost exactly.
Jace takes Methuselah’s position, but isn’t quite as cryptic about it and instead speaks in scientific terms that leave Mathis like “please have mercy I got a C in high school physics”.
Lilith Barker takes Jace’s place, ensuring that Donner doesn’t escape. She was climbing Blackrock mountain when the first flare happened, and when she saw from above what was happening, she rushed down to try to help.
Vachon takes Hobbs’s place but isn’t as obviously dead meat after his cutscene though. Hobbs is the guy who they mentioned got shot with arrows (who is Leclerc in canon).
Mackenzie, in spite of being a convict, isn’t actually a bad guy. He’s exceedingly practical, but he cares for his people, and when he learns Mathis is trying to get to Blackrock, he immediately agrees to help him. Then a faction conflict happens in Blackrock because some dudes are like “hey fuck you and fuck this guy from solitary you’re not the boss of me”. So Mackenzie wrestles with that and keeps them in line while Mathis goes to do all the quests.
The warden and Father Thomas sort of swap places except the warden ends up more in Molly’s position. He went off the deep end a bit with the fire and brimstone and most people stopped attending his services, which he resents them for. He kills the convicts because “it’s the will of the Lord”. Just fully cuckoo bananas with the religion.
Grey Mother is Mackenzie’s other henchman because I think epic gun grandma should get to commit crime and also hang out with Mackenzie more. It’s part of why in this AU, Donner does actually escape; because Lily gets distracted by her mom being there.
Methuselah goes where Grey Mother does. He has the player go look for buffer memories instead so they can write down the story of Milton because he doesn’t want it to die. They need to go to the farmhouse to get the key to the office, not the lockbox.
Father Thomas isn’t locked up (because in this AU, the convicts didn’t murder everyone bc the staff weren’t as horrible to them) but he is completely useless in sorting out the conflict in the prison. Just like “oh no, please don’t— oh no you’re doing it anyways :(“

Mercredi
Part 2

I was honestly thinking the same thing when it came to Mathis and how he is written. Episode 4 has so much potential to bring up questions about morality because Mackenzie is in the middle of two sides on two different ends of the so called "morality spectrum" the warden and Jace have much more rigid views and believe that prison is the only place for guys like Donner. While Mathis, Healer, and Vachon are basically the other side of that. We don't really have a concrete reason for why they started crime in the first place but it would be so unrealistic for it to be as clean cut as "just because". Jace says he has to choose a side but there's no reason given for him not to choose Jaces with how everything is framed. Overall i think Mathis totally could have been a foil or parallel to Mackenzies character and could have garnered some actual sympathy as opposed to being a big bad criminal.
And maybee I just want to see more of their interactions but that's besides the point!
I honestly wish there was going to be more than five episodes of wintermute for the long dark. It still feels like we're at the beginning of the story.
SPOILERS FOR WINTERMUTE
-
For the first three episodes you have an average of two characters to interact with. You get three in episode one, two in episode two (along with your possible brief interaction with the forest talker). One of episode twos characters is from episode one so you only get to properly talk with one character the whole time. In episode three you're technically around more people, but you only have real conversations with two of them. Finally in episode four you get five new characters, three of whom are criminals that teeter between multi/dimensional and evil bad guys who do crime because fun.
The most variety we get of people is in episode four. I don't think this would be a problem if we got some more time with all the characters. I know wintermute is meant to serve as a kind of tutorial for survival mode, but I think it's narrative should be a bit more important considering no super new survival mechanics are introduced. At least in episode three you have to learn about timberwolves and experiment with some different weapons.
It feels like everything's going to be crammed into the last episode. We get hints of a narrative in the first two, but we don't get a whole lot of elaboration in the third and fourth. The only character you meet that seems to have any idea what's going on is completely absent from anything beyond episode two. Methuselah doesn't show up at all for Astrid, which I can think up some kind of explanation for. But he's nowhere to be seen in four when we're back with Mackenzie again.
There's also the player choices featured in the first two episodes. One is easily missable if you're just trying to follow the main plot. The other is commented on by another character as if it was one of many tests of your morals. They didn't have to include player choice in the narrative, but I feel like it opens up a lot of missed opportunities for how the survivors may be changing in this new kind of world.
I hope this long post doesn't sound like I'm complaining to much, but I genuinely care about the story hinterland is trying to tell in wintermute. It nowhere near as popular as survival mode but it's something I (and others I believe) are genuinely interesting. I hope episode five isn't the last that we're going to get of these characters and this story, because I think we'd be missing out on a lot of potential that way.
I love the long darks wintermute but it feels really cobbled together sometimes. I hope at some point in the future we get some edits to previous episodes to help fix some of the issues.
I don't think a whole lot of people are going to read this long post, but please talk with me and others about wintermute because I love to see peoples in depth takes on the story.

Spoilers for Episode 4 Fury, then Silence
I have played up until the talk with Jace at the power plant and I have a few questions:
1. How long has it been since the power went out?
When we arrived at the prison, the warden says something like "the power went out a few weeks ago, but we managed to get by with generators. But those went out a couple days ago and we lost control of the prison/the prisoners rebelled". And I thought that yeah, that made sense, timing wise. But now I talked to Jace and she said that when her car broke down, she got lost and stumbled across the prison, where prison guards and civilians were being killed. Was that the rebellion Franklin mentioned? If so, why did it happen right after the aurora and not weeks later like Franklin said? And where ARE the convicts now, because all we have seen thus far are Mathis and the two guys he brought.
2. How are steam valves and cell opening mechanisms related...?
Because I started thinking about the first question I missed what was being said about the WHY of Mackenzie having to break into the control room. Specifically, why he has to break that maschine. Because let me tell you, opening a supermax cell and hot steam doesn't really go that well together in my head. halp
3. Do they have contact with Donner?
I'm wondering because going by the conversations we have heard, it sounds like Donner is completely cut off. Which wouldn't be impossible since he's in solitary (which I'm guessing is a cell and not a larger area cut off from the rest of the prison), but he'd have to get food and water somehow right?
And if Donner is in a tiny cell like I am imaging, how is dynamite gonna get him out without also killing???
If you want to answer, please remember that I am still in the middle of playing episode four (edit: finished chapter 2 now), so please try not to spoiler anything. Thank you!

(spoilers) but I Fucking LOVE the long dark. The latest episode in the game was fucking EDGE OF MY SEAT type crazy. Mathis and this Macguffin type character Donner in solitary... THE LAPTOP GIRL JACE IN THE INTRO who is SUCH a cool character, the continuation of landlines and the BUILDUP was so good. I cannot wait for the next episode, but I absolutely will because this is an awesome game and I'm so happy I've been lucky enough to see it evolve and change.
These new characters are just icing on the cake, I fucking LOVE the writing in this game oh my GOD

Was talking to my brother the other day about what Mathis’s first name is, and we came up with a few solid ideas:
Dave. I thought Dave Mathis Band was a lot funnier than it probably is
Donner. Egotistical fuck probably would name his son after himself.
Dylan. Imagine if he was named Dylan that would be hilarious. He would hate it.
Donald. Mod the game so that everything is the same except Mathis is replaced with Donald Duck. Profit

ENFIN.

Chapter 12: Luminance Fugue
Will paced the tiny prison cell, hands shaking in rage as he thought of Mathis holding Sage captive. He slammed a fist into the stone wall, ignoring the burst of pain in his knuckles. He had to get out of here. He had to save her.
“Psst…. Hey.” A voice of a man whispered from the barred window into the next-door cell. “Come to the window, we must talk. Stand on the toilet and you can reach the window.”
Will whipped around, surprised at the new voice. He was curious so he complied. Will stood up on the toilet seat and was able to see into the next cell. There was an older man tied to a chair. He could barely see the other man.
“There you are! Well…. welcome to this shitshow.” The other man greeted Will.
“Ok, so who are you?” Will demanded.
“Unfortunately, I run this place.” The other man replied with a deep wariness.
“That doesn’t seem to be working out too well for you.” Will deadpanned.
“Yes, well normally I’m on the other side of the bars. Name’s Franklin. I’m warden here at Blackrock.”
“Name’s Mackenzie. Franklin…what’s going on here?”
“Mathis and his gang of thugs are trying to break someone out of solitary. We’re still alive, for now, so they must need us for something. The power’s been out for days and nobody’s coming to help.”
“Sounds about right. Mathis took someone I care about from me; do you know where he’d keep someone?” Will asked, his heart pounded as he thought of Sage’s terrified face.
“Hmmm, maybe my old office, he’s claimed it as his. I heard…. the commotion earlier, did he take…. a pet of some sort from you?”
“No! She’s not a pet…. She’s a child.” Will hesitated before continuing, he remembered his promise to Sage about not telling others about her, but the damage had already been done. They needed allies. “Have you ever heard of borrowers? She’s a child, about three inches tall, but she’s no different from any other kid.”
“…. you know, I’ve had…. heard of them before. In old folk tales, it says they bring good luck or good fortune to those that show kindness to them. I hope you find her, but she’d most likely be kept in the warden’s office.”
“So…... Mathis, you know him?” Will asked, trying to gather more information and take his mind off his gut-wrenching worry over his tiny child.
“Oh yeah, we go way back. He was in for murder on the mainland about ten years ago. He did some time but got off on parole. He came back here for Donner.”
“Donner?”
“His son. Mathis is bad, but he’s old school bad, murder, larceny, and grand theft auto. But Donner……. he’s all that but worse.”
“So……not a good person.”
“Well, he’s looked up in BlackRock, isn’t he?” Franklin paused then continued. “Donner is evil to the core. There’s no redemption for guys like Donner. They should have been able to break him out by now. But something’s wrong. Or someone…. Has been getting in the way.”
Both men tense at the sounds of multiple footsteps echoing down the hall. Mackenzie scrambles down and stands in the middle of his cell. Just in time as Mathis and his men come into view. Mackenzie can only stand and watch as Mathis enters Franklin’s cell.
Mackenzie flinches as he hears Mathis interrogate Franklin. Mathis grows angry, especially when Franklin mentions Donner. In his anger Mathis starts to beat Franklin. Once Mathis has finished beating up the old Warden, he turns to two of his lackeys and orders them to patch the man up. “Heller! Vachon! Take care of this mess.”
Mathis glares at Mackenzie as he walks by.
Heller curses under his breath. “There’s no way I’m going out there again."
“Well, we’re out of medical supplies, one of us has to go out and fetch something.” Vachon replied.
“Why don’t you do it, I’m not messing with those wolves, they’ve gotten worse.”
“I went last time.”
“Well, if one of us doesn’t go, boss will kill us himself, he’s gotten more unstable.”
“I’ll do it.” Mackenzie piped up. Both convicts turn to him in surprise.
“And why would we let you out, you’d run and never come back.”
"The warden's dying," Will said flatly. "He needs medical attention, or he won't make it through the night. And plus, Mathis is holding my little girl hostage, I’ll be back."
Heller and Vachon exchanged glances. Finally, Heller jerked his head. "Go. But any funny business, and the girl pays the price."
Will grit his teeth. "Understood."
*******
The outdoor air was cold and bitter. Mackenzie was annoyed that Mathis’s thugs refused to give him his coat back, he’d have to look for a new one. He only had his sweater and basic clothing. They took everything he had from him. He’d have to collect some more stuff and stash it somewhere before he returned. He had to make plans for his future escape. The courtyard of the prison compound was relatively safe. But to get to the old infirmary, he’d have to step out into the outer fenced section. But there was danger lurking. A pack of hungry wolves stalked the outer and inner gates. He must be careful.
*****
Will’s pulse hammered in his ears as he navigated the dimly lit corridors of the prison infirmary. The infirmary, once sterile and ordered, was now a scene of chaos. Overturned gurneys and shattered glass crunched underfoot. His eyes swept over the baren shelves until they landed on a bulky emergency medkit, sealed and intact. Before he could grab it, he startled at a sound he was not expecting to hear.
*Ring* *Ring*
Mackenzie turns to the old phone on the wall in almost disbelief. He’s not sure how this works when nothing else has. Still in a state of disbelief he reaches out and picks up the phone.
“Who is this? And where are you calling me from?” Mackenzie asked into the phone.
An unknown female voice answers. “Somewhere safe. Look Mister Mackenzie, soon you’re going to have to figure out whose side you’re on in this little stalemate we have going on.”
“I don’t know anything about a stalemate. And I’m on my own side.”
“Well at least you’re honest.”
“Where are you and what do you want?” Mackenzie demanded.
“That question has a long answer. Right now, I’m safe from those prison assholes. But I cannot say the same for you.”
“Look, the prison warden…. he’s injured. I’m just trying to keep him alive and rescue someone that Mathis took from me.”
“So…. They let you out of the prison? Then they’re just going to let you back in?”
“Right.” Mackenzie replied realizing how unlikely that sounded.
“But you aren’t helping them?” The unknown called asked in clear skepticism.
“I’m not helping them.”
“Something about this situation…...about you…. doesn’t fit.”
“Look why don’t you tell me where you are and maybe I can help you.”
“Help me? The caller sounded amused. “Shit man, you can’t even help yourself.”
“Are you the one that’s messing up the convict’s plans?” Mackenzie asking, trying put puzzle pieces together.
“Maybe I am, maybe I’m not. Either way, I’m not telling you. How do I know you aren’t really one of Donner’s boys?”
“Donner…...so you know about him.”
“Wake up man. This is all about Donner. Don’t you get that? And I’m the only thing standing between that fucker rotting away in solitary and an evil man being unleashed on the rest of this hellhole.”
“Well, I hear the summers are nice here.” Mackenzie replied trying to lighten the mood.
“Take care of yourself, Mr. Mackenzie. Those wolves sound pretty hungry to me.” With that the call ended.
“Well, that was weird.” Mackenzie muttered to himself under his breath.
Back to his original task, Mackenzie grabbed the medkit and retraced his steps, each creak and groan of the building setting his nerves on edge. Will's mouth was dry, his breaths coming in short, ragged gasps as he pushed onward, driven by the singular thought of saving Franklin... and Sage.
The final stretch was a blur of shadow and adrenaline. Will pressed on, pushing his body beyond exhaustion, driven by the knowledge that with each second lost, the warden's breaths could be slipping away.
As sprinted across the open grounds toward the main prison building, the medkit clutched in his grasp, Will knew that the true test was just beginning.
****** “Yeah, you’d better get in there to see him.” Vachon told him as he searched him then lead him to Franklin’s cell.
The warden lay slumped against the chair he was tied to, his breathing shallow.
"Franklin," Will gasped, dropping to his knees beside the battered man, the emergency medkit springing open with a click.
"Stay with me," Will murmured, his fingers steady despite the quake of urgency that threatened to overtake him. He reached for an ampule of adrenaline, snapping the top with practiced ease. The needle plunged into Franklin's vein, a silent prayer accompanying the push of the plunger.
As the drug coursed through the warden’s body, Will wrapped a compression bandage tightly around the man's ribcage, stemming the tide of bruising that painted his skin in violent shades. Franklin's eyelids flickered—a subtle but promising sign.
"Good," Will whispered, more to himself than to the semi-conscious man before him. His hands moved with care, cleaning cuts, and applying antiseptic with the tenderness of a craftsman.
"Who the hell are you?" Franklin croaked, the words barely audible, laced with pain and gratitude.
“Relax, it’s me your neighbor from the other side of the wall.”
“Ah…. you.”
“I cleaned you up the best I could.”
“Thanks, you seem to know a fair bit of first aid.”
“Well…...I’m marr……I uh…. know a doctor.”
“We’d better hurry before the guards get back. There’s something I need to tell you about the prison.”
“I’m listening.”
“Solitary. It’s……. it’s on its own locking circuits. Separated from the rest of the prison. Mathis and his guys……haven’t figured that out yet.”
“But when they do?”
“When they do, they’ll get Donner out. I can’t figure it out, but someone is out there. Messing with the system.”
“I might have an idea of who it is.” Mackenzie admitted with a sigh.
“You see someone out there?”
“Not saw but I talked to someone on the phone.”
“Right! The old rotary phone system would still work.”
Before they could finish their conversation, clear signs that Mathis and his men where walking down the hallway towards their location.
With panic and urgency Mackenzie rushes back to his cell, so he’s not caught by Mathis. He makes it just in take as Mathis approaches the cells. Mathis stands before his cell and then reaches out and pushes his cell door open. Showing that it isn’t locked. Mathis turns to glare at his cronies.
“He……hey how’d that happen? Vachen said, trying to act surprised.
“Wow! Yeah, must be glitchy.” Heller agreed. Trying to play it off.
Mathis chuckles as he enters Mackenzie’s cell. “These Idiots think I’m a fool, I know they were too chicken to take care of the warden themselves. And they sent you out into the cold to do their dirty work.”
“Where is Sage? Is she ok, is she hurt?” Mackenzie asked.
“Who’s Sage.” Mathis mocked.
“The tiny child you took from me.” Mackenzie glared. If his look could murder, Mathis would be dead ten times over.
“Oh! I remember…. your tiny pet.” Mathis reached into his pant pocket and pulled at the tiny wiggling form of Sage. Mathis held the tiny child in a tight fist. Not caring for the tiny girl’s comfort. Sage gave Will such a sad and pleading look, she stretched out her tiny arms to him, with a pleading desperate look on her tiny face. Mackenzie’s heart broke. Mathis' fingers closed around Sage's tiny form like a vice, his cruel eyes gleaming with malice.
"Please, Mathis," Mackenzie pleaded, desperation evident in his voice. "She's just a child! You have a child too, you must understand!"
Mathis sneered at him, tightening his grip on Sage. "This little rat ain't human," he spat out, disgust coloring his words. "And if you ever compare my son to this...this thing again, I'll rip her tiny limbs off." Sage sobbed in fear, her small body trembling in Mathis' merciless grip.
“Please let me hold her, she’s scared. I’ll do what you want, just please give her back to me.” Mackenzie begged, holding his palm out for the tiny child.
“Oh no. You want her back; you’ll have to earn that.” Mathis sneered, holding Sage up aloft and away from Mackenzie’s reach.

(HI pretend that I'm sending this from @tldconvictdatingsim) do you have any Donner headcanons or just general thoughts abt him? if so, please share🤲 I'd love to hear them!
@tldconvictdatingsim you have given me such a gift I am going to go insane now I have been thinking about this through an entire day of airline hell.
First of all, I see Donner as being the youngest known Long Dark character. I usually put his age somewhere between 19 and 23 (Jace is a grad student, so she’s probably in her mid to late twenties). He’s got Issues, and doesn’t know how to feel about his dad coming to bust him out. I also think that pre-solitary Donner and any Donner we would see in the game’s time span are almost entirely different people. I won’t get into my views on prison as an institution because I don’t know enough about the Canadian penal system, but I am of the stance that solitary confinement is a form of torture. Donner is almost definitely not a new inmate at Blackrock, and has likely been in solitary for at least a few months. Even for someone who was in a good mental state going in, that would be rough. Donner definitely was not in a good mental state.
To me, Franklin’s comment that Donner is new-school, a different type of crime than Mathis, is very telling. The way I see it, Mathis is a career criminal like you see in movies and video games. I’m not sure if I would go so far as to say charismatic, but that’s certainly what he tries for. While it would be really funny if the fact that Donner is a more modern criminal meant he was a cryptobro or something, that’s definitely not it. When I was playing through it for the first time, my brain went to mass shooter pretty much immediately. Though honestly I think that what exactly he did doesn’t really matter a ton at the end of the day. I will say that I also think his trial was a huge media spectacle. He was a conventionally attractive young man who committed a major crime, and there is no small number of people who get really amped about that kind of stuff.
I think his relationship with his father is an interesting one. We know Mathis has spent a good amount of time in jail. I’d need to rewatch the cutscene where Heller and Vachon talk about Montréal, but I believe Heller refers to that incident as having occurred a few years prior. I think Mathis goes in and out of jail, and that’s sort of a blessing and a curse for Donner. On one hand, Mathis is very mercurial and explosive, meaning that when he’s angry, he’s enraged. That’s not really a good look on a parent, and it makes for a more relaxing time when the parent is not there. But also, we see that Mathis cares very deeply for his boy. He goes to nearly the end of the earth for him. So I’d imagine that, when not mad, he would be a very loving and supportive father. And while I do think that we see Mathis in a very high-strung, tense situation during the game, he strikes me as the type to find excuses to be tense, because if he slows down he might think of all the things he tries not to think about.
I think Donner’s mother is very distant if she’s present in his life at all, just because Mathis is so present, and his absence is felt so clearly that I think it just doesn’t make sense for his mother to also have that larger than life personality. Mathis likes to surround himself with followers (his in game description specifically says he likes to think of himself as a leader of men), and I don’t think he would be any different in searching for a romantic or sexual partner. So Donner’s mom really isn’t helping to blunt the effect of Mathis’s outbursts, or fill in the spaces he leaves when he’s gone. She’s at best just kind of there.
Donner’s upbringing taught him that there were two ways to get attention: either be clever and charming, or cause problems. Being charming is preferable because it doesn’t get you in trouble (and he’s seen the kind of trouble his dad gets into), but it doesn’t always work. Prior to solitary, he’s the kind of guy where most people who know him are like “but he’s so sweet!” and are horrified how he could do what he did, whatever it was. Someone particularly insightful might have seen the way he looked at people, analytical, and maybe understood a hint of what was lying beneath, but it would have been difficult. Unlike his father, I think Donner is very rigid, very put together. He saw the outbursts in his father and said “i won’t do that”, and so he’s this incredibly composed dude right up until he… isn’t.
After solitary, though, I think that changes. He loses some of the charisma, some of the ability to interact with others, but that comes with those walls coming down a bit, the tightly laced image of himself that he portrays loosening up a bit. Keeping up that kind of a front takes constant practice and adaptation and when you haven’t spoken to another person in months, you lose a lot of that. He comes across more like his dad, which I think he has really mixed feelings about. He tries to keep it together, but he can’t, and that upsets him more and makes a real nasty feedback loop.
Also I think he’s gay but super repressed and it freaks people out bc they’re like “a young man with no interest in women? That’s fucked up.”
#the long dark#tld#tld donner#abuse mention#prison mention#torture mention#shooting mention#gonna be honest here I have no idea how to tag this#oh wait hold on#long post#meta analysis#maybe?#this might be entirely incomprehensible but I spent four hours dealing with air canada’s bureaucratic horseshit this afternoon#so I really don’t have the brain power to fix it

LUNDI 2 MARS 2020 (Billet 1 / 5)

Snow White and the 1026 Dwarfs
Snow White woke up in the strangest little bed! She'd happened upon the small, cozy house deep in the woods, found nobody at home, and promptly crashed in the first bed she'd spotted. Sleep claimed her then, dragging her away to a place of relative peace and calm... carefully letting her ignore how tiny all the furnishings were, how oddly low were the ceilings and fixtures. And now, the next morning! What odd little men surrounded her! Normally she'd be alarmed by close proximity to so many strangers, but the events of the past day had granted her an oddly calm outlook on life. Nothing much rattled her anymore. Snow White blinked sleepily, yawned, and stretched. The men watched her every movement, transfixed. "Do you talk?" She asked experimentally. One older man -- tiny, rotund, and wiser than the rest with a long white beard -- glanced around at the others and nodded. He adjusted his spectacles and stepped forward. "I'm Doc," he explained with a jolly chuckle. Snow White laughed and clapped her hands with delight. "My, there certainly are a lot of you! I'm ever so sorry for barging in here uninvited, but I don't really have a home any more... would you mind terribly if I stayed for awhile? I can cook and clean and--" Doc raised a hand, interrupting her gently. "We'd be honored if you stayed!" All 1026 dwarfs nodded in agreement, and were so thrilled they threw Snow White a party to celebrate their new friendship. The party lasted late into the evening, and everyone passed out with full tummies and a happy smile lighting their faces. The next day the dwarfs arose early and prepared for work. Snow White cooked them breakfast and when it was time to leave they all lined up at the door to bid her farewell for the day. Snow White expressed her gratitude by kissing each dwarf on the forehead: Smarmy, Ragey, Explainy, Glossy, Pookie, Pesty, Grippy, Inebriated, Teary, Swampy, Piggy, Catty, Hitler, Stroky, Zombie,
