I really should Astrid post more but I am terminally afflicted with “having to fix any plot holes in media” disease and episode 3 is the best written one of the bunch aside from the very end of it where Astrid gets in her teleportation boat. Like they could’ve easily made a story beat that was both more interesting and more effective than episode 2 where she has to travel to the end of desolation point, realizes there’s no way to follow the highway, and has to collect supplies and follow the path of someone who tried to do the same before coming across their body right before she leaves and being like “well. I don’t have a choice. I have to do it anyways.” And it would’ve been so much more interesting and effective than “haul ass back and forth down the same straight line repeatedly and then also fight a bear with a spear? I guess?”. If Jeremiah was carrying this message and we never met him, just found his corpse after following his trail, and carried on his message, it would’ve been so much more meaningful to the overall theme of the game.
Like thematically, Jeremiah being left alive doesn’t really fit. He’s not terminal like episode 1 and 3 are, where it’s narratively clear that there’s nothing left to be done for these people, and that the chances of them being there when/if someone ever comes back for them are minimal. Methuselah calls the end of Milton’s story a sad one. Molly says “I could’ve been something” in the past tense. Grey Mother and Father Thomas and the crash survivors have had what they can done for them, but they need more help, help that only the protagonists can maybe get and even that’s a maybe. Meanwhile, Jeremiah is shown to be making a recovery from his wounds, and will probably just go back to being a bushie once he’s healed up. That doesn’t fit. It’s like “the old world is asleep, and you’re the only one left to hear it… except mean ex military man who reads like your uncle who starts a political debate at thanksgiving dinner. He’s fine.”
Episode 4 isn’t terminal but it’s actively hunting you down. And I think Astrid should’ve gotten something like that, or something external driving her towards perseverance mills other than just needing to help with something we don’t really know about. It makes her feel less motivated, when she’s decisively more motivated. Especially leaving her as having already gotten there at the end of episode 3. It leaves all of the cliffhanging to Mackenzie. Not cool.

Thoughts/observations about Jeremiah:
There are three graves in front of his home at Trapper's Homestead in Mystery Lake, marked with makeshift crosses. Sure, they could be pets, but every single other grave on the island that we see is for a human being. The closeness to his house + the neatness of the graves says to me that these are family members or very close friends. Part of me wonders if the Old Bear is responsible.
It's implied that he was/is involved with the Forest Talkers. It's also mentioned in the buffer memories that you can find at Carter Dam that he was scouting around the Dam and making the few remaining employees nervous. He could have been trapping, but there's not much worth hunting up there. A little industrial sabotage though...
If he's not ex-military and likely some sort of special forces, I'll eat my hat.
While his name is probably a reference to famous mountain man Jeremiah Johnson, it comes from a biblical prophet with an exceptionally difficult, tragic life. Jeremiah is sometimes referred to as 'the weeping prophet'.
The prophet Jeremiah was appointed by god to reveal the sins of the people and warn of the punishment coming their way. Given what Jeremiah the trapper says about 'the quiet apocalypse' that Astrid and Mackenzie are thrown into, it seems an apt choice.

I was just thinking about this:
There's a black screen scene after the credits in TLD 2.. and I've come across two different [scenes] one of them is the regular ( crows pecking on window ig and someone opening it) the other one however has peaked my curiosity, it sounds like someone using matches to light a lantern then walks through the maze of professor wright that leads to the monster.. you can even hear the waterfall and monster groaning this scene however is so rare to trigger, sadly. I've played so many times before triggering it.
Have you guys seen it too? Any thoughts/theories?
Imo the protagonist - maybe - visits the monster -> hugo ashdown.. I can't be sure but the monster doesn't get scared nor tried to run away the sounds implied that he stayed then the footsteps gets closer which I think indicates that the person is familiar with what they seeing.. it's satisfying post credit scene emotionally. hopefully this person has good intentions for hugo, but can't help but wonder why? 😐

I had this thought a while ago but imagine Alexandre walking past Jeremiah across the street (or anywhere idk)seeing him, and getting eaten inside by guilt cause he can't tell him. About anything. At all. They were best friends before, shared so much memories together, but now they're both complete strangers in his eyes cause of what happened to him, or yet to all of them...
#b.txt#tld#just thinking#i was gonna say anthony too but jeremiah does remember him kinda (cause else how could he know who wrote the letter lmao)#in the first episode#graaa this game is so....#this game... it drives me insane sometimes#watch this make no sense when i wake up and reread it lmao im so sleepy

👀 (for the end year wip reblog ^_^)
Thank you! >.< Have the first paragraph from a tld fic that's just titled "Binary Stars" for now:
"The night was cold and clear, promising snow in the coming days, and making Jeremiah grateful for the blanket around his shoulders and Alexandre's warmth at his side. Above them, thousands upon thousands of stars were shining in the moonless sky. Alexandre's mansion stood in the countryside, far away from the gaslights, the smoking chimneys and the dense fogs of London, and the night was dark enough to see the Milky Way stretching like a pale banner from one end of the horizon to the other."
I didn't manage to finish it last year because I was trying to write something bitter-sweet and nice but ended up with too much astronomy nerdery XD But it's high up my list for fics to finish this year!

Swap AU make my pea-sized brain ping around my head like one of those brick breaker games.
Mathis was on a flight to Great Bear to visit his son in prison. He booked a flight with Archer Remote Transport, flying with a serious woman named Molly who doesn’t seem to particularly like him. Their plane goes down, and he finds himself in a quiet apocalypse.
Molly is a pilot who hunts in her spare time. After her husband died in mysterious circumstances, she’s generally regarded with suspicion by the people around her, and it weighs heavily on her.
Astrid is a doctor in the small town of Thompson’s Crossing. Shes taken over the community centre as a clinic. She would go out and search for crash survivors, but the people here need all her attention.
Mackenzie is a convict who recently got transferred to Blackrock. After one of his guys, a stern man named Jeremiah, got sent here, he got himself sent up to break him out. By the time he reached the prison, that had already happened, so he started searching the island for someone who could get them off it.
Heller takes Jeremiah’s position almost exactly.
Jace takes Methuselah’s position, but isn’t quite as cryptic about it and instead speaks in scientific terms that leave Mathis like “please have mercy I got a C in high school physics”.
Lilith Barker takes Jace’s place, ensuring that Donner doesn’t escape. She was climbing Blackrock mountain when the first flare happened, and when she saw from above what was happening, she rushed down to try to help.
Vachon takes Hobbs’s place but isn’t as obviously dead meat after his cutscene though. Hobbs is the guy who they mentioned got shot with arrows (who is Leclerc in canon).
Mackenzie, in spite of being a convict, isn’t actually a bad guy. He’s exceedingly practical, but he cares for his people, and when he learns Mathis is trying to get to Blackrock, he immediately agrees to help him. Then a faction conflict happens in Blackrock because some dudes are like “hey fuck you and fuck this guy from solitary you’re not the boss of me”. So Mackenzie wrestles with that and keeps them in line while Mathis goes to do all the quests.
The warden and Father Thomas sort of swap places except the warden ends up more in Molly’s position. He went off the deep end a bit with the fire and brimstone and most people stopped attending his services, which he resents them for. He kills the convicts because “it’s the will of the Lord”. Just fully cuckoo bananas with the religion.
Grey Mother is Mackenzie’s other henchman because I think epic gun grandma should get to commit crime and also hang out with Mackenzie more. It’s part of why in this AU, Donner does actually escape; because Lily gets distracted by her mom being there.
Methuselah goes where Grey Mother does. He has the player go look for buffer memories instead so they can write down the story of Milton because he doesn’t want it to die. They need to go to the farmhouse to get the key to the office, not the lockbox.
Father Thomas isn’t locked up (because in this AU, the convicts didn’t murder everyone bc the staff weren’t as horrible to them) but he is completely useless in sorting out the conflict in the prison. Just like “oh no, please don’t— oh no you’re doing it anyways :(“

Vague tld spoiler/s under the cut,
((I was all set to holler 'noooo' during Wakefield's end but one line made me stop and made the ending infinitely better; to the point where I can't pick which ending I prefer right away, the line specifically states that Jeremiah shoulders the consequences that he and his friends wrought and answers for them (a thing that Anthony wanted to do but failed, but at least he kicked it off) and.... I like that. A lot. Perhaps this outcome is what's hinted at the end Jeremiah's end (the 'fulfilling a promise to a friend') but I'm glad that it was directly stated.))
