I LOVE your characterisation in your fics!! how do you go about writing the coaches bc you do it really well and I'm curious how you manage to nail their personalities (especially when non story coaches don't have much to work with 😭)

thank you!! ok so this took forever to answer bc i was lazy and forgot about it SORRY but short answer: vibes. look at the vibes of everything and do what feels right. long answer: there’s three main things i usually, but don’t always look at: visuals, expressions, and music.

for this, i’m going to use cherry delish from lunch as an example.

VISUALS: probably the biggest thing to pay attention to. just by looking at details in the background of the map, you can make headcanons from these details.

arcade machine: she’s a gamer. this arcade machine is also seen in ruben and polo’s map, connecting the two coaches.

skateboard: she likes to skateboard.

dance and fitness posters: she likes to work out.

guitar: she plays guitar.

“angry cherry” ad: she’s someone who gets angry easily.

the sketchy style of the map can imply that cherry is someone who’s creative and artistic.

i don’t always do this, but you can also use the music videos for songs to help you. these screenshots from the lunch mv can spark the idea that cherry likes to play games, and based off that, is someone who’s competitive and likes to challenge people.

EXPRESSIONS: expressions as a dancer are SOOOO important!! not just facial expressions, but the way you express yourself through your body and the WAY you dance can help people understand the dance and the dancer.

for example: the dancer who plays cherry portrays her with confidence. a lot of the dance involves very fluid movements, hand placements, and showcasing the physique over her body. that keys you into who cherry can be: a confident woman who has no problem with showing off.

MUSIC: this is honestly the detail i use the least when building characters, but it can still be helpful. the energy of the song can help build the character, as well as the lyrics. we all know what this song is about, but we can build so much more off of that just by looking more closely at the lyrics

a lot of the lyrics feature a generous nature from billie, offering to do things for her partner to please her. we can say the same about cherry, creating an implication that doing acts of service is how she expresses love as a love language.

another lyric. this one can imply that cherry is direct when it comes to letting others know what she wants. she’s not going to tiptoe around things when talking to others, she’s going to be authentic and straightforward.

those are the main points i use, but a lot of it just comes down to trusting your gut and eventually turning them into your own oc 🗣️
