Fast and Furious Timeline Explained (Including F9)
https://ift.tt/35RIciY
When the Fast and Furious franchise started in 2001, it’s doubtful anyone working on it expected they were launching a mythology so trenchant it’d still be going 20 years later in a film with the words “Fast Saga” in its full title. But here we are on the opening weekend of F9: The Fast Saga, and the series is so beloved it’s expected to resurrect the theatergoing box office once more. And you know? Thank goodness, mi familia.
Sometimes there’s nothing nicer than spending your summer situated around a grill with a couple of cold ones, reminiscing about old times with loved ones. And if we ever spent a full day at one of the Toretto clan’s barbecues, we’d likely hear a lot more exciting tales that begin with “remember that time…” After all, what other family can talk about that time they stole a literal vault out of Rio de Janeiro? Or that other time Luke Hobbs caught a torpedo with his bare hands; and Trej and Roman over there, they launched a Pontiac into space! With them in it!
There have been some crazy times with this group. Hence we’ve created this handy-dandy timeline for those who are struggling to remember when and where things went down…
* Editor’s Note: After Fast & Furious (2009), the franchise gets intentionally vague and fuzzy about the time and years between events, so exact dates are left somewhat up to interpretation.
1989
Dominic and Jakob Toretto work as mechanics on their father Jack Toretto’s professional stock car. During the last race of the season, Jack asks Jakob to help him throw the race, but Jack is killed in the sabotaged accident. Dom thinks Jakob murdered their father. (F9)
Dom beats another pro driver named Kenny Linder near to death with a wrench, as he is at least partially responsible for the carnage of Jack’s crash. Dom is sentenced to prison for five years. (The Fast and the Furious, F9)
1991
Dominic Toretto is released from prison after two years. The first thing he does when he gets out is challenge Jakob to a street race. If Dom wins, Jakob will leave Los Angeles and never return. He’ll also shut off all communication with Dom and their sister Mia. Jakob loses. (F9)
2001
Dominic Toretto alongside his ride or die lover, Letty Ortiz, and childhood friend Vince form an illegal crew of big rig hijackers, stealing DVD players and digital cameras. (The Fast and the Furious)
Brian O’Conner volunteers to go undercover for the LAPD and FBI, infiltrating Toretto’s crew and the world of illegal street racing. But he soon comes to idolize Dom and fall in love with his little sister, Mia Toretto. Brian ultimately helps Dom escape the Feds. (The Fast and the Furious)
2002
Gifted Asian American student Han Lue graduates rom petty crimes to participating with his cousin and two other friends in a cheat sheet racket at their prestigious high school. The group makes a small fortune, but after things get out of hand, they wind up murdering another student. Han’s cousin who helped in the deed kills himself, and a mourning Han drifts further into the underworld. (Better Luck Tomorrow)
2003
Years after fleeing California and prosecution, Brian winds up in Miami where he’s still a hotshot street racer who hangs with his mechanic buddy Tej Parker. After their operation is pinched, Brian is given an offer by the FBI to go undercover again and root out a violent Argentinian drug cartel operating out of Miami. He does so alongside childhood pal Roman Pearce. (2 Fast 2 Furious)
2005
Dom and Letty are secretly married while living as fugitives outside the U.S. (Furious 7)
2006
Dom Toretto now runs a hijacking crew out of the Dominican Republic, alongside Letty and new bestie Han Lue. After a near death experience, they disband. Han says he’ll go to Tokyo, and Dom leaves Letty behind. (Fast & Furious)
Letty goes to Brian O’Conner, who is now an FBI agent. She attempts to clear her and Dom’s records by infiltrating a Mexican drug cartel run by Arturo Braga. Unfortunately, Arturo figures out Letty’s deception and runs her off the road, blowing up her car, which leads everyone to think she died (including Brian and Dom). In truth, she was saved from the wreckage by Gisele Yashar, a secret CIA operative who also infiltrated the Braga cartel. She takes Letty to the hospital. (Fast & Furious, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7)
At the hospital, Letty awakens with amnesia and is recruited into a crew run by Owen Shaw, who has power over the Braga organization. (Fast & Furious 6)
2007
Dom returns to Los Angeles with Mia to avenge Letty’s apparent murder. He buries the hatchet with Brian as they destroy Braga’s cartel. Dom is supposed to have his name cleared in the process, but the FBI betrays him and he’s sentenced to 25 years in prison. Brian and Mia hijack Dom’s prison transport, freeing him and becoming fugitives themselves. (Fast & Furious)
After freeing Dom, the trio flee to Rio Janeiro where they hope to stay incognito. Old friend Vince recruits them for a job to steal three cars, but mid-mission the threesome learn they’re stealing from the DEA, including a vehicle with a computer chip that details the financials of a Brazilian crime lord. (Fast Five)
Dom and Brian recruit an international crew to steal $100 million from the crime lord, including Roman Pearce, Trej Parker, Han Jue, and Gisele Yashar. The Family is reborn. Brian and Mia also learn they’re pregnant. The crew ultimately steals the money and even gains assistance from ruthless DSS agent Luke Hobbs after the super-cop’s team is murdered by local gangsters. (Fast Five)
Hobbs discovers Letty is still alive. (Fast Five)
2008
Brian and Mia give birth to their son Jack. (Fast & Furious 6)
Hobbs tracks Dom down, discovering Dom is now in a serious relationship with Hobbs’ former Brazilian liaison, Elena Neves. Dom is told Letty is alive and working for British criminal mastermind Owen Shaw. (Fast & Furious 6)
Dom and the Family are able to rescue Letty from her manipulative boss, even though she still doesn’t remember who she is. Dom leaves Elena for her. In the fight to save Letty, Gisele is killed and Owen is left in a coma. Han, who was dating Gisele, decides to go to Tokyo. (Fast & Furious 6)
Elena discovers she is pregnant with Dom’s child and decides not to tell him. (The Fate of the Furious)
2009
Elena gives birth to Dom’s son, whom Don is unaware of. (The Fate of the Furious)
Han is recruited by CIA mystery man Mr. Nobody, who reveals Gisele was a CIA agent the whole time. Han picks up where Gisele left off, ultimately saving an orphaned Japanese child named Elle, whose parents encrypted her blood with the key codes to a doomsday device called Ares. (F9)
Han continues illegal street racing in Tokyo where “drifting” is what the cool kids do. He even takes American teenager Sean Boswell under his wing after Sean is banished by his mother to live in Japan with his Army father. Han teaches Sean to drift. (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift)
Deckard Shaw, Owen Shaw’s older brother, breaks into Owen’s hospital and, after killing his doctors, promises to avenge little bro by getting the Toretto family! He begins by nearly killing Luke Hobbs and Elena, who is now working full-time with the big guy. (Furious 7)
Dom takes Letty to Race Wars in order to jog her memory. She gets fragments back but decides the old Letty is dead and drives off, leaving Dom. (Furious 7)
Dom returns to his family home in Los Angeles where Mia tells him that she and Brian are expecting their second child and she’s afraid to tell him because he’s addicted to an adventurous lifestyle. Dom agrees to talk to Brian. Only then does he receive an ominous phone call about… (Furious 7)
… How during Sean and Han’s exploits ,they offend the Yakuza. This leads to Sean and Han being chased by gangsters. In the chaos, Han is T-boned and seemingly killed in an explosion. The other driver is Deckard Shaw, who is here to kill Han in order to send Dom Toretto a message: he’s coming for the Family. He calls Dom to taunt him as he thinks Han burns. But in a twist on a twist, it turns out Han and Mr. Nobody knew Deckard was coming and used this as an opportunity to fake Han’s death so as to better protect Elle! (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, F9)
After receiving Deckard’s phone call, a letter bomb goes off in the Toretto family home, nearly killing Dom and Mia. Dom and the Family are recruited by CIA weirdo Mr. Nobody into stopping Deckard from obtaining an all-powerful MacGuffin. Nobody gives them unlimited resources and also brings Letty back into the fold. She inexplicably gets her memories back after remembering she and Dom were secretly married. (Furious 7)
Sean ultimately becomes the Drift King of Tokyo (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift)
The heroes save hacker Ramsey from Deckard and she joins the Family. Together they stop Deckard by causing a parking garage to literally fall on his head. Shaw goes to prison, and Dom and Letty get back together. Brian agrees to retire for the sake of his two kids but not before one last angelic ride along next to Dom. (Furious 7)

Luke Hobbs approaches the family to do an illegal mission, but in the getaway Dom betrays them at Cipher’s behest, leading Luke Hobbs to be disgraced and sent to prison. He gets a cell right next to Deckard Shaw, and the two develop a frenemy banter. They’re freed by Mr. Nobody to help the CIA track Cipher. (The Fate of the Furious)

He reluctantly joins the Family to try and rescue Mr. Nobody, and they discover Dom’s long lost little brother, Jakob (now big and swole), is involved after going rogue as a secret agent. (F9)
Letty and Mia go to Tokyo to find out what Jakob is after and discover Han is alive, reuniting him, plus his ward Elle, with the Family. (F9)
Trej and Roman work with Sean and friends on the Fiero, eventually “driving” it into space to stop Jakob (and later Cipher) from essentially taking over the world. Jakob helps Dom stop Cipher and is pseudo-redeemed. (F9)
Back from the dead, Han decides to confront Deckard Shaw… (F9)

ARLINGTON, Texas | Colon might not have enough time to pass Marichal again
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/weDnG3
ARLINGTON, Texas | Colon might not have enough time to pass Marichal again
ARLINGTON, Texas — Bartolo Colon still has another lofty goal after becoming the top winning pitcher from Latin America.
“This year is almost getting close to the end. But there is one thing that I will look for, is Juan Marichal has more innings than me,” Colon said through a translator. “For the Dominicans, I want to beat him also.”
But there likely won’t be enough time left in his 21st big league season for the 45-year-old Texas Rangers right-hander to do that.
After needing six tries to get his 246th career victory and finally break a tie with Nicaragua’s Dennis Martinez for the most win by a Latin American, Colon now would have to throw 61 2/3 more innings to pass Hall of Famer and fellow countryman Marichal on another list.
The last-place Rangers have only 46 games left in this long and hot summer. Colon, who has averaged just under six innings in his 21 starts, would probably have no more than nine starts remaining in a five-man rotation and if he stayed on his turn.
But the Rangers are clearly focused on the future and likely will want to look at some younger pitchers, especially after rosters expand Sept. 1. Plus, they are already lined up with six starters and Colon won’t pitch again until next week, even though the team has no off days before then.
When asked Wednesday if Colon’s workload would be lessened down the stretch, manager Jeff Banister responded, “We’re still in the same rotation as before.”
Colon (6-10) gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings Tuesday night in his 11-4 milestone win over the Mariners. The portly and popular right-hander retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced after Seattle had two triples in the third, an inning after back-to-back homers by Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager.
When Colon got his 243rd career win on June 6 against Oakland, he matched Marichal for the most by a Dominican pitcher. The Rangers hurler passed the “Dominican Dandy” on the victory list when he beat Kansas City on June 18.
Marichal, who threw 244 complete games in his career, pitched 3,507 innings in 471 games over 16 years.
Colon is at 3,445 2/3 career innings, the most among active pitchers, as are his wins, after beating the Mariners in his 560th career game. He has pitched 130 1/3 innings this season.
After catching Martinez at 245 wins on June 30 against the Chicago White Sox, Colon went 0-5 with a 6.46 ERA in his five July starts before breaking the tie.
“The pretty remarkable thing about 246 (wins), we’ve been talking about all morning, there’s a couple guys with outside shots,” Banister said. “If Bart got to 250, he could be the last to get to 250. That would be the crazy thing about it.”
CC Sabathia, the 37-year-old Yankees pitcher, has 243 career wins. Houston’s Justin Verlander, who is 35, is third among active pitchers with 199 wins. Felix Hernandez, the loser against the Rangers on Tuesday night, has 168 career wins for the most by a Venezuela-born pitcher.
“He loves the game,” Banister said of Colon. “He loves to play, which is pretty refreshing. And we know it.”

SEX TOURISM
SEX TOURISM
ISM:
August is approaching, and you may still be hunting for the perfect place to vacation. You may want to try something new and controversial--at least in some circles. Sex Tourism! That’s right, there are many spots across the globe that encourage sex for money and they’re not constricted by American cultural values. Sex tourism is a huge industry and contributes to the GNP of some nations; consequently, many nations encourage this kind of travel. Nations that come to mind immediately are Thailand (they have roughly 3 million sex workers), Cambodia, Phillipines, Netherlands--in particular Holland. I was surprised to learn that Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti are hot spots. Not so surprising when you think of the poverty in those countries, but surprising to me that anyone would want to visit those countries at all. I mean, I don’t get the impression that these places have strict workplace regulations with regard to hygiene and disease and, well, use your imagination. Of course, I could certainly be wrong, and if so my apologies to those countries and their hospitality workers.
I think we can all agree that sex tourism among consenting adults is fine and randy--I mean, dandy--but some countries use sex slaves, and the tourist doesn’t necessarily know that before engaging in sex with them. Perhaps it wouldn’t bother some tourists, but many would be shocked and saddened to learn of it.
Some countries help to educate their sex workers. For example, Brazil offers them free German, Spanish, or English classes so that they can better communicate with tourists. Brazil is one of the top sex tourism destinations in the world, so hopefully, these workers will be offered more language classes. I mean Sex Tourists Lives Matter; language discrimination is just plain wrong.
Also, interesting to know is that Kenya is one of the top sexual tourism spots on the African continent. It is particularly popular with older white women from the USA and UK. Apparently, these women are looking for a holiday romance with a local man, at least according to information compiled by people who ask these kinds of questions. Exactly what “older” means intrigues me. Over 50? 60? 80? Over and out?
The topic of female sex tourism is separate from sex tourism, in general, which is mostly sought out by males. Women seek intimacy and romance in sex tourism, whereas men seek mainly the sex. Bah humbug to romance! Speaking of bugs, the people who ask questions and compile information about sex tourism, say that a majority of women contract STDs and other health problems due to the fact they don’t use barriers while engaging in sex. I’m assuming they mean condoms and not walls--walls would hurt.
I’m guessing that men don’t always use barriers, either, but the incidence of STDs among that population of tourists isn’t documented. Perhaps romance has more ill effects, thus more women contract illnesses. Who knows? Probably it has to do with women interacting with locals who may or may not be careful about their health.
And, finally, sex tourism is affordable in most of the countries where it’s offered, so for people on a tight budget, sex tourism is doable, more doable than in their native, and sometimes more affluent, countries.
I have to say, I wonder what the average length of stay is for sex tourists. Traveling from the US to many of these spots is time consuming, and then factor in jet lag, and surely you’d want to spend at least a week. I wonder how many selfies are taken--and shown upon return? I’m guessing that what happens in Kenya, stays in Kenya.
If you’re ready to travel and become a sex tourist, wait until the lights turn red, and then GO FOR IT!
What say you? Or are your lips zippered?

Though often overshadowed by Bob Gibson in our collective memory bank, Juan Marichal was, in many respects, the most successful right-handed pitcher of the 1960s. "The Dominican Dandy" led MLB in wins (191), CGs (197), and shutouts (45) during the decade, with Gibson—164, 164, and 41 respectively—finishing second in each category. Among those with at least 2,000 innings pitched during the span, no one comes close to Marichal's 2.57 ERA, .685 winning percentage, or 3.66 strikeouts-to-walks ratio. Between 1963 and 1969, Marichal posted a 2.30 ERA while averaging 23 wins, 24 CGs, 223 Ks, and only 49 walks per full season (min. 250 IP). In choosing him as the top right-hander of the decade, Bill James wrote: "The most amazing thing about Marichal is that if you add together his 1963, '64, '66, and '68 seasons, his overall record [97-31] is better than that of the four Cy Young winners."
Marichal's majestic leg kick, numerous release points, and pinpoint control of a five-pitch repertoire—fastball, curve, slider, change-up, screwball—gave even the most patient batsmen fits. Described by Steve Blass as "the surgeon general of pitching," Marichal—thanks in part to his excellent screwball—dominated left-handed hitters to the tune of a .230/.274/.336 slash-line over his career (righties hit .243/.279/.362). Among the least fortunate of these southpaws were Willie Stargell (.174 w/ 28 Ks in 109 ABs), Willie Davis (.181 w/ 23 Ks in 193 ABs), Eddie Mathews (.221 w/ 27 Ks in 86 ABs), and Ron Fairly (.222 w/ 29 Ks in 158 ABs). Among right-handed hitters with at least 40 plate appearances, none fared worse than Randy Hundley (.102), Frank Howard (.140), Roy McMillan (.157), Ernie Banks (.182), or Tony Perez (.187).
"Put your club a run ahead in the later innings, and Marichal is the greatest pitcher I ever saw," declared manager Alvin Dark. Though he was never able to lead the Giants to the promised land, Marichal did his part, posting a 1.50 ERA with 10 Ks over 12 innings of post-season work. American League batters fared even worse in the Midsummer Classic: "Manito" appeared in eight All-Star Games (18 IP), striking out 12 while posting a 0.50 ERA. None other than Carl Hubbell, the undisputed master of the screwball, gushed when discussing Marichal: "This guy is a natural. He’s got ideas about what he wants to do and does it. He amazes me."

On This Day in Baseball History January 12, 1983: The Dominican Dandy, Juan Marichal becomes the first player from the Dominican Republic to be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In a 12-year career, Marichal compiled a 243-142 record with a career 2.89 ERA. Marichal started 457 games of which he completed 244 of them. Though Marichal had four straight 20+ win seasons from 1963-1966 and 26 wins in 1968, the nine time All Star had the misfortune of pitching in an era when Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson were utterly dominant, which led to Marichal never winning a NL Cy Young Award. #JuanMarichal #DominicanDandy #SanFranciscoGiants #BostonRedSox #LosAngelesDodgers #DominicanBaseball #BeisbolDominicano #LatinoBall #LatinoBaseball #BeisbolLatino #NationalBaseballHallofFame #HallofFamer #HOFer #OnThisDayinBaseballHistory #ThisDayinBaseballHistory #BaseballHistory #HistoriaDelBeisbol #Baseball #Beisbol #BaseballSisco

Chris Dial emailed on Facebook: "Hey Marc! I really love the podcast! I’m actually here in Ireland doing an internship on an archaeological site, Blackfriary Dominican Friary, here in Trim, County Meath, and listening to episode 412, Galway Shawl, while working today! Anyway, just wanted to say I really enjoy the podcast and hope your travels in Star Wars are out of this world! Sláinte!"
Sean Lightholder emailed on Facebook: "What's up Marc. I heard you call out for female pipers back on your Fight Like a Celtic Woman episode. My good friend and fellow Irish musician Autumn Rhodes was posting a new female Uilleann piper every week there for a while in an effort to raise awareness of how many talented female pipers are out doing their thing. I'd reach out and say you were referred by me to see if she could point you in the right direction ??"
Elle Clark emailed: "Hi Marc, I really appreciated your statement on diversity! I don’t know if you’ve already done this in the past but I’ve been thinking for a while to suggest a queer-themed episode. I thought maybe it would be “too political” or something... guess not! I’d really love to hear an episode featuring queer songs and/or queer artists. If you can’t gather enough there’s always the old standby of love songs originally sung by one gender being covered by the other without changing the pronouns. This could be a good episode for June which is pride month in the US, or maybe there is an important date in Ireland that would suit."

Painter Etel Adnan’s Career Didn’t Take off until Her Eighties—now She’s an Inspiration to Young Artists

Ninety-three-year-old Lebanese artist Etel Adnan’s lovely, simple compositions argue for the persistence of peaceful landscapes—despite whatever violence pervades the daily news. For over five decades, she’s made small-scale paintings of mountains, skies, and water, all rendered in interlocking color blocks. A solid circle often adorns the top of her canvases, representing a sun that shines benevolently on the hills and valleys below. The creamy hues, which she typically applies with a palette knife, further contribute to a sense of lush harmony. The work is easy on the eyes and spirit.
That’s not to say that Adnan hasn’t engaged with harsh realities. Born in 1925 in Beirut, the artist was immediately attuned to ideas of colonialism and cultural difference: Her father was Syrian, her mother was Greek, and Lebanon was still under French rule. She later wrote in a poem, “This unfinished business of my / childhood / this emerald lake / from my journey’s other / side / haunts hierarchies of heavens / … / Under a combination of pain / and machine-gun fire / flowers disappeared.”
The artist studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris and later in the United States at Berkeley and Harvard, quickly applying her beliefs throughout her own revolutionary writing (she’s still best known for her poetry). From a teaching post at Dominican College in San Rafael, California (now Dominican University of California), Adnan lent her voice to protesting the French occupation of Algeria, and eventually the Vietnam War. She began painting only in 1958, at the encouragement of an artist colleague, Ann O’Hanlon.

Adnan turned to Mount Tamalpais, not far from San Francisco, for inspiration. The mountain—sometimes rendered jagged, at other times rounder—appears in many of her paintings throughout the decades. She’s still painting it today, from memory now, instead of observation. It’s no longer just out her window: She’s settled into an itinerant Paris-Beirut-California lifestyle with her partner, sculptor Simone Fattal.
O’Hanlon and her husband gave Adnan her first solo show in 1961, at a gallery they’d established in Mill Valley, California. Exhibitions at small venues continued throughout the decade, mostly around the region. Mary Sabbatino, vice president and director of Galerie Lelong & Co. (one of Adnan’s New York galleries), describes the artist’s work from this period as “brushier,” though on the same small scale as her later work. Adnan was also making hand-woven tapestries, always expanding her practice into different media while keeping her themes and her colorful, abstract approach consistent.
In the 1970s, she returned to Lebanon for four years and edited two daily newspapers, Al Safa and L’Orient le Jour. Civil War broke out in the country in 1975, and Adnan moved back to Paris the next year. Her award-winning novel, Sitt Marie Rose (1977), critiques Lebanese society’s treatment of women and its religious intolerance. As if she wasn’t busy enough, Adnan continued to paint and exhibit, showing work in Beirut and Rabat, Morocco.

In 1977, Adnan also returned to California. She continued to paint Mount Tamalpais, invoking the same subject matter in varied media across thousands of canvases. Often, she included a bright red sun in the form of a square or circle. “The sun gives life, the division between night and day. She comes from Lebanon, a place of so much sunlight,” explains Sabbatino. “The sun turns red at sunset and red is the color, for her, of life.”
Despite her devotion to her visual art practice, Adnan didn’t receive widespread acclaim until Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev saw her work at Beirut’s Galerie Sfeir-Semler in 2010. As director of the major international art quinquennial Documenta 13, Christov-Bakargiev was so impressed she offered Adnan a prominent position in the exhibition. The presentation in Kassel featured Adnan’s abstract canvases in addition to her leporellos—accordion-style folding books that merge the artist’s words and drawings.
A slew of major international group exhibitions followed. The New Museum featured her in a 2014 exhibition of art from the Arab world, while the Whitney Museum of American Art included her in its biennial the same year. “She became particularly interesting for me at a moment when our lives have been conditioned by iPhones and computer screens and situations in which language and images are coming closer together,” said curator Stuart Comer, who helped select the participants.

The Museum of Modern Art’s blockbuster 2017 show “Making Space: Women Artists and Postwar Abstraction” gave an untitled 1965–66 composition by Adnan a significant position at the entry. If the New Museum had situated the artist within a regional framework, and the Whitney offered a thematic way of viewing her practice, this exhibition placed her within a major, worldwide movement in art history. Adnan’s small, delicately rendered canvas became part of a story that included Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, and Yayoi Kusama.
The market, too, has gradually started appreciating Adnan’s work. At Art Basel in Basel this year, Galerie Lelong’s booth sold paintings by Adnan for €30,000–€50,000, prints starting at €2,000–€3,000, and tapestries and leporellos for €70,000 and €18,000, respectively.
And the tale of Adnan’s career is still evolving. With a show opening later this month, Lelong will further contextualize Adnan’s work by placing it alongside that of the ever-experimental Carolee Schneemann and Brazilian painter Ione Saldanha. And this summer, MASS MoCA is giving Adnan a solo presentation that connects her poetry with her art practice.
“I think that we’re at the end of hero worship,” says Sabbatino, explaining why artists like Adnan are thankfully receiving their due. “We’re looking to expand history, we’re looking at women artists, we’re looking at artists who were, quote, forgotten.” That’s just one of the many narratives in which Adnan plays an integral role. As additional exhibitions reframe and reconsider her practice, the artist’s reputation grows for having both a singular aesthetic vision and a crucial position within the international art canon. Her quiet, meditative canvases are finally able to speak for themselves.

ARLINGTON, Texas | Colon's 243rd win matches Marichal when Rangers beat A's 8-2
ARLINGTON, Texas — Bartolo Colon has always admired Hall of Fame pitcher and fellow countryman Juan Marichal.
Now the 45-year-old portly right-hander known as “Big Sexy” has matched the “Dominican Dandy” for the most wins by a pitcher born in the Dominican Republic.
Colon got his 243rd career victory after working five innings Wednesday night as the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 8-2.
“It’s a little different tonight because I tied the mark of a Hall of Famer. I feel very proud and honored to do that,” Colon said through a translator. “It means a lot. He’s Dominican and the first guy from the Dominican to become a Hall of Famer.”
In his fourth attempt at the milestone victory, Colon (3-3) got it against one of the 10 other major league teams he has pitched for since his big league debut in 1997 with Cleveland. He allowed two runs with one strikeout and two walks.
“Really incredible moment for Bartolo, for this team,” manager Jeff Banister said. “More importantly, I think for Bart, just continue to write his name in the history books and some legacy. … To sit and watch a guy like this go out and compete every time he takes the ball, it’s incredible to watch.”
Colon leads all active pitchers with 243 wins and 3,383 2-3 innings pitched. His 2,499 strikeouts are third among active pitchers, behind CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander — all three are former AL Cy Young Award winners. Nicaragua’s Dennis Martinez, with 245 wins, is the only Latin American native with more wins than Colon.
“Milestones are very important. That’s why I keep playing,” Colon said. “It’s not the money. It’s something I try to fulfill. That’s why I keep playing, to meet these goals.”
Marichal was 243-142 in 471 games (457 starts) for three teams from 1960-75, spending the first 14 of those 16 seasons with the San Francisco Giants. Colon is 243-179 in 550 games (539 starts)
Jurickson Profar homered twice, while Joey Gallo and Ronald Guzman also went deep for the Rangers in the first four innings against Oakland right-handed starter Daniel Mengden (6-5). Profar had his first multihomer game, and added a two-run single in the seventh for a career-high five RBIs.
Colon held the A’s scoreless until Khris Davis hit his 15th homer, a two-run shot that made it 6-2 with two outs in the fifth. Colon got an inning-ended flyball on his 97th pitch and then did fist-bumps with teammates in the dugout.
Texas led 3-0 in the first after Profar hit a two-run shot and Gallo immediately followed with his 17th homer. Both also homered Tuesday night, when the Rangers went deep a season-high five times against Oakland.
Profar hit another in the third, giving him homers in three consecutive at-bats. He walked in his final plate appearance Tuesday after his sixth-inning homer then. Guzman’s two-run homer in the fourth made it 6-0.
“Didn’t give up very many hits, but they all ended up being homers,” Mengden said. “Sometimes that’s a good thing. Solo homers usually don’t hurt you, but in this case, four of them that hurts.”
KEEPING THEM STRANDED
Rangers reliever Jose Leclerc came on with two on and no outs in the eighth, and the A’s didn’t score. He has allowed only one of 23 inherited runs to score. Right fielder Nomar Mazara threw out Davis trying to score on Mark Canha’s single for the last out.
“The difference for him is the calmness, the confidence and pounding the strike zone with all of his pitches,” Banister said. “His confidence continues to ramp up.”
SHORT HOPS
Oakland has homered in 19 consecutive road games, two short of the club record. … The A’s have played six games in a row without an error, their longest streak this season.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Athletics: OF Matt Joyce, who hasn’t played since leaving in the fifth inning of Saturday night’s game at Kansas City, was put on the 10-day DL with a lower back strain. … OF Stephen Piscotty didn’t play after coming out of Tuesday’s game early with left quad soreness.
Rangers: 3B Adrian Beltre was out of the starting lineup for the second time in six days since coming off the DL (left hamstring strain) for the second time this year. “Just easing him back into it,” Banister said.
UP NEXT
Athletics: Oakland is back home Thursday to start a 10-game homestand. RHP Frankie Montas (2-0) goes against Kansas City.
Rangers: Cole Hamels (3-5), with a 2.89 ERA his last seven starts, pitches for Texas on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game home series against Houston. The lefty threw six scoreless innings against the Astros on May 11.
