Movies movies movies:
THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA (1976): Disquieting, bloody psychological drama, directed by Matt Cimber (later the founder of G.L.O.W., and the basis for the "Sam Sylvia" character played by Marc Maron on the 2017–2019 G.L.O.W. TV series), about a disturbed young woman named Molly (Millie Perkins, wife of screenwriter Robert Thorn), whose horrifying history of childhood abuse causes her to sublimate sexual attraction into dissociative homicidal fits, when she isn't doting on her two young nephews or drinking herself into a haze. Vibes like an exploitation movie, but too arty and surreal to really qualify as one, and it doesn't ever feel quite like a horror movie despite the lurid subject matter; probably the closest comparison is Abel Ferrara's MS.45, with which it would make an apt double bill. Demands strong CWs for CSA and suicide, both of which are pretty rough, but it definitely makes an impression, perhaps most strikingly in the later scenes where Molly's seedy boss (Lonny Chapman) and bitchy coworker (Peggy Feury) begin to grasp how unhinged Molly has really become, leading to a disturbing finale. Too unsettling to easily recommend, hard to forget.
ALICE GOODBODY (1974): Lightweight, smutty exploitation movie, written, produced, and directed by Tom Scheuer, starring Sharon Kelly as a starstruck Hollywood waitress who loves old movies and movie stars (most of whom the people she meets in the industry have barely even heard of) and who is determined to get a small part in a new musical about Julius Caesar, even though it means sleeping with almost everyone in town. A kind of cheerful low-stakes sex comedy they don't make anymore: The situation is obviously sleazy, but not in any way that ever puts Alice in any particular jeopardy (she's in far more danger on set, where she keeps suffering different workplace accidents). The movie's central running joke is that the men whose favor she's supposed to be cultivating are at least as fixated on their own weird obsessions and neuroses as on sex, something Alice just has to sort of work around as best she can, which ends up making her sympathetic and even relatable. More likable than you'd think.
SPICE WORLD (1997): Delightfully dopey Girl Power homage to Richard Lester's A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, starring the Spice Girls, Richard E. Grant at his Richard E. Grantiest, and a cast of thousands. (Just picking out all the cameos and guest stars is half the fun.) This is what I think the Greta Gerwig BARBIE movie was going for: obviously a commercial product, and making no apologies for its mercantile ambitions, but self-aware enough and full of enough sly piss-taking to be thoroughly enjoyable even if you aren't in (or never had) a Spice Girls phase. Goes on a bit too long, but Grant's outfits alone are worth sticking it out for, and the bridge-jumping climax is very funny.
KALIFORNIA (1993): Mordant thriller starring a disconcertingly young-looking David Duchovny as Brian Kessler, a young writer who blows his advance for a new book about serial killers on an old convertible for him and his horny art photographer girlfriend Carrie Laughlin (Michelle Forbes, with disconcerting bangs) to drive across the country, photographing famous murder sites. Along the way, they pick up a couple of hitchhiking hicks, Early Grayce (Brad Pitt) and Adele Comers (Juliette Lewis), to help pay for gas, not realizing that Early is a paroled convict who's just murdered someone and has no qualms about dropping more bodies along the way. Tim Metcalfe's script (with obligatory '90s voiceover narration) scores some points early on in its depiction of Brian and Carrie's obvious classism and brittle middle-class hipster intellectualism, but the story ends up validating their prejudices rather than questioning them, which keeps the film from being entirely satisfying despite its effectiveness as a thriller. The cast is very good, with Pitt and Forbes the real standouts — Pitt plays Early as a man who draws no line between aw-shucks Southern congeniality and murderous rage, while Forbes makes Carrie's mix of ambition, appetite, and roiling intensity so vivid that you come away wondering what she's doing with Brian, who Duchovny plays as a somewhat gormless jackass. As for Lewis, suffice to say this would make an interesting double bill with NATURAL BORN KILLERS, released about a year later, where she plays a variation on the same damaged theme.

Season of the Witch (Время ведьм)

Janet Jackson - If 1993
"If" is a song by American singer-songwriter Janet Jackson from her fifth studio album, janet (1993). Jackson co-wrote and co-produced "If" with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, with Harvey Fuqua, John Bristol and Jackey Beavers receiving songwriting credits for the sampling of their composition "Someday We'll Be Together", performed by Diana Ross & the Supremes. "If" was released as the album's second single on July 13, 1993. It fuses various genres, including rock, trip hop and industrial music, with elements of new jack swing and hip hop.
It received a BMI Pop Award for Most Played Song and was also ranked among Slant Magazine's "Best Singles of the 1990s" list. It peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. It reached number three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and peaked atop the Hot Dance Club Play chart. It peaked at number 3 in Canada and 14 in the UK. It reached the top ten of Sweden, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, also peaking within the top twenty in Australia.
The accompanying music video for "If", directed by Dominic Sena, portrays voyeurism, sensuality and intense choreography, while depicting technology that was unavailable at the time, such as touch screens and web cameras. The video received various accolades, including Best Female Video and Best Dance Video at the MTV Video Music Awards, and a Billboard Award for Dance Clip of the Year. It was also voted the second best female video of the decade by Idolator.
"If" received a total of 63,1% yes votes! Previous Janet Jackson polls: #146 "Got 'til It's Gone".

as a lifelong ATLA fan who narrowly had ATLA dethroned as my top show by The Dragon Prince steadily over the past 5 years, the similarities between the two have very little to do with the surface level parallels that get regularly drawn between them.
Like ATLA, TDP has Books for seasons and chapters for episodes, but unlike ATLA, which only touched on storytelling sparingly as a theme, TDP is obsessed with interrogating storytelling and history and the presence of unreliable, biased narrators throughout many of its episodes (most notably 2x05, 2x06, 3x06, 4x04, and 4x07 among them). Half of what you learn in the 1x01 intro ends up being a lie once you reach S3, with more being steadily deciphered.
Yes, TDP has different magics with people living under those umbrella terms... for the elves. Humans are coming culturally at things from a completely different angle, and the elves' connection to their primal sources are discussed philosophically in detail, informing their practices and their culture first hand, including the way they chafe against humans, who are arcanum-less. Many animals in the world are also connected to magic, which influences both their design and which ones get hunted for humans' more 'clever' solution in dark magic, including each other.
The core issue of the Puppetmaster, down to being a coercive magic formed by someone deeply resentful of their imprisonment? Said puppetmaster is the main endgame antagonist of the entire show with all of S4 onwards being exploring the ethics of controlling people against their will in various methods, and the entire show itself being a thematic battleground of fate (imprisonment) vs free will for virtually every single character.
Where ATLA mostly concerns itself timeline wise with ending the war, very little thought is shown by any of the characters as to what they'll do after the war. This isn't a problem (as it reflects the sheer domineering scope of the conflict) but even Zuko being firelord is only ever really addressed with 2.5 episodes left till the finale. TDP, meanwhile, ends its 'war' in s3 and s4 opens up with dealing with the old wounds festering between people with centuries of history, the struggles that come when people aren't able to let go and believe they're safe or mourn in a healthy manner, and the religious/cultural clashes that may occur when trying to integrate different groups of people.
TDP also has an evil father with a devoted daughter and a brother who eventually defects, but it explores the reality of an abusive parent who loves/will sacrifice for you and your right to leave regardless, even if that means leaving the sibling you truly deeply love and who loves you in turn. Which means that when you and your sibling are on opposite sides of a deep ideological conflict, it actually really fucking hurts bc we've seen first hand just how much they love each other and also how and why everything fell apart not in spite of that love necessarily, but also because of it.
Is this to say that TDP is a 1:1 with ATLA or that it's better? No, not at all, and the latter is subjective. I prefer TDP, but I think they're about on equal ground when you look at each show currently as a whole (although TDP has two seasons left to go).
But TDP takes a lot of what ATLA was doing thematically with some of its most interesting beats and then builds or expands upon them further. It talks further and more consistently about the cycles of violence; in many ways, Jack De Sena's character, Callum, begins the series largely where Sokka had ended (and he's not the most like Sokka anyway; very much his own thing); we get Faustian bargains and centuries' long grief and fucked up people who are trying both succeeding and failing at not doing fucked up things. There are antagonists, but it is very hard to actually label anyone at this point a straight up villain. Moral greyness is where the show starts, and it just continues from there.
That's not to say the show is nothing but dark and depressing - like ATLA, there's a steady thread of hope and humour even as the show gets steadily closer and closer to its 11th hour point - but the show is usually emotionally heavier. There's more blood and potentially disturbing imagery with body horror and on screen death. There's so much foreshadowing you basically can't go more than 5 minutes into any episode without having something that's going to come back around or be referenced again like 3-5 seasons later.
Just to be clear - TDP is like ATLA, but it's like ATLA in interesting ways beyond the more shallow surface level that usually gets attributed to it, while still very much being its own show and its own thing. And that is why I tend to recommend it to people who like ATLA.
Thank you and goodnight
(Also, the fandom doesn't have any ship wars, and the show is queer as fuck)
#tdp#atla#the dragon prince#avatar: the last airbender#mine#parallels#analysis series#also betrayal. tdp talks a lot more about betrayal#now im trying to think if there's any character in tdp who hasn't felt or been outright betrayed#i. DON'T THINK SO??#atla meta#tdp meta

Round 2 Has Finished!
Hey, no tiebreakers this time!
Not much to say this time. Most of the results were what I expected but I do have some questions about others (please feel free to answer said questions).
If you would like to see the percentages and some commentary, continue reading. If not, I will see you soon for round 3.
Ayame Mikuri (51.9%) vs Miyuri Yukari
Pia Undo vs Tsubasa Hanekawa (75.2%) - I know nothing about Divine Gate, but I do think Pia's outfit is quite cute. A little sad she lost.
Toyo vs Madoka Kaname (84.3%)
Livia Medeiros (50.7%) vs Rena Minami - ... Really? Alright then.
Sana Futaba (78.3%) vs Asahi Miura
Kaede Akino (56.8%) vs Sudachi Suwa
Mikoto Sena (51.7%) vs Hotaru Yura
Saki Asami vs Mikage Yakumo (82.6%)
Sasara Minagi vs Amaryllis (81.1%) - This was a much larger gap than I expected. Is her story that good or do people mostly just like the design better?
Ren Isuzu (76.3%) vs Kokoro Awane
Kuro vs Nanaka Tokiwa (70.9%)
Kagari Hinata vs Alina Gray (85.7%)
Mikura Komachi vs Yu (76.9%) - Please, I am begging someone to tell me why Yu. Why is she so popular? It can't be because she's a serial killer, other serial killer magical girls have lost this already.
Himena Aika (62.5%) vs Sayuki Fumino
Ashley Taylor (70.7%) vs Meiyui Chun
Mel Anna (77.1%) vs Ryoko Natsu
Hazuki Yusa vs Eternal Sakura (71.2%)
Mayu Kozue (53.4%) vs Kako Natsume
Rui Mizuki vs Kanoko Yachiyo (64.8%) - Aw man, the resident chuunibyou lost...
Masara Kagami vs Juri Oba (57.3%)
Kyoko Sakura (88.8%) vs Tsubaki Mikoto
Riz Hawkwood (75.4%) vs Kanna Hijiri
Chiharu Hiroe vs Mito Aino (59.2%)
Corbeau vs Tsuruno Yui (70.4%)
Yuma Chitose vs Mitama Yakumo (77.6%)
Yuna Kureha (66.2%) vs Riko Chiaki
Ayaka Mariko (74.6%) vs Meguru Hibiki
Momoko Togame vs Ui Tamaki (52.1%) - This was a little closer than I expected.
Ao Kasane (52.7%) vs Suruga Kanbaru - For a while, I really thought Suruga was going to win this.
Gunhild vs Homura Akemi (85.2%)
Sae Kirino vs Nagisa Momoe (74.3%)
Iroha Tamaki vs Yachiyo Nanami (62%) - It feels early to have two major characters face off, but the RNG willed it. And it wasn't that close.
Seika Kumi vs Nayuta Satomi (52.6%)
Karin Misono (56.7%) vs Kanae Yukino
Konoha Shizumi (68.9%) vs Shigure Miyabi
Oriko Mikuni (76.9%) vs Lapin
Olga vs Mifuyu Azusa (59.5%)
Felicia Mitsuki vs Mami Tomoe (72.2%) - Even against another major side character like Felicia, Mami has dominated. All hail Mami.

—In Yumenosaki Academy’s garden terrace, Izumi and Eichi are playing chess together, during Eichi and Izumi’s third year—
Eichi: Checkmate.
Izumi: …Haa? What is this joke? This is just the beginning–so what are you playing on winning already?
Eichi: Chess is my specialty. I have fairly good talent on it. (pours tea for himself)
Ever since my childhood, I have never lost to any adults, not to anyone. (picks up the cup)
Izumi: Hmm..
Eichi: A draw–or to be exact, a match that couldnt be concluded, it has only been achieved with Tsukinaga-kun.
Izumi: If such an average guy could result in a draw with you, then I should be able to win against you easily, right? That brat–he could not do anything else other than composing songs.
Eichi: …Is that so? Isn’t that only what you want to think of him? (drinks his tea, then put the cup)
Let’s end the playing time now, and delve into the business.
It’s a negotiation. I want you, Knights, to be a united party with us, the Student Council– In next week’s DDD that will be held, to crush Trickstar.
Izumi: …Didn’t I tell you that I’m still considering it? Don’t rush me, can you..! I don’t give a care about DDD, though.
Eichi: (drinks tea)
Izumi: The current Knights is an empty shell–no seats nor domination. Can you believe this?
The Knights now, even already including the newbie, only barely made up 4 members.
Eichi: (arranges the chess anew) Ah.. The Suou household’s family heir, Tsukasa-kun, has just newly joined, huh?
…But, if my memory is correct… Knights consists of 5 members, right?
(puts his fingers on his chin) Tsukinaga-kun too… he still hasn't quitted school yet, correct?
Izumi: …That guy…(looks away) he can’t fight anymore.
Eichi: Hmm. So even now, it’s still like that, huh...
Previously, I also visited him once. (puts his hands on his chin)
Really, unexpectedly geniuses are so frail. That was not the Tsukinaga-kun that I liked…
Izumi: (grits his teeth)
Eichi: Hey, Sena-kun… I really can not comprehend it. Everyone says that it’s all my fault, and I do believe that is one side of the truth... But I honestly did not have such intentions.
I liked Tsukinaga-kun. It was fun when I played with him, and I was happy. That’s all there is to it…
Hey, Sena-kun. What is the reason that Tsukinaga-kun breaks? (looks at the Sakura tree on his left)
…Just who was it that killed the Cock Robin? [1]
***
—One year ago—
Izumi: (in the middle of calling Leo’s phone)…Geez, what is he doing!? …I can’t even get in contact with him.
Leo: (pushes the door open) Sorry…! I made you wait, Sena…!
Izumi: (raises his voice) You’re late! What are you…–
Huh!? Leo-kun, what the hell is with your condition!? (helps Leo that nearly collapses)
Leo: (collapses) Ow, it hurts…
–Izumi takes Leo to hospital–
Izumi: You… are you an idiot? The body is an idol’s foundation. Have a bit of awareness, okay!?
Leo: Aahh.. you’re so noisy! This is just a bit of a scratch because I fell over. Once I lick it with spit, it will recover immediately!
Tsumugi: (about to exit the hospital) …Huh? Just as I thought I heard some noises, it turns out to be Sena-kun? (walks outside) Hello. We meet here in such an unusual place!
Izumi: Oh…
Leo: (raised his eyebrows) Who are you?
Izumi: Oh, Leo-kun doesn’t know, huh? This is my classmate, Aoba.
What about you? What are you doing in a hospital?
Tsumugi: I am visiting a person– Eichi-kun.
Izumi: Eichi…? Oh, the rumoured conglomerate heir. I heard he collapsed in the nearby underground live house, and now he’s being treated in a hospital?
Tsumugi: Yes. I was asked by others to give him some prints. What about Sena-kun?
Izumi: Uh… I am just an aide. He doesn’t speak about the details at all… but he got injured and his arm’s bone was broken.
Tsumugi: Eh!?
Izumi: So, that is how I brought him to the hospital like this.
Leo: (pouts) I don’t like hospitals…! It smells strongly of medicine, boring, and I’m bad with it! There are people bringing needles with them to forcely pour strange substances in!
Eichi: (reading a book) Hmm? What is it, it seems noisy outside?
Eichi: (walks and looks down the window)
Tsumugi: Um… who is this? I don’t really remember…
Leo: Ahaha, right, right? I’m the genius who doesn’t really go to school often…–
Eichi (OS): Tsumugi and… Sena-kun from the same class? There’s another person there…
…Who is that little one?
***
–Inside the hospital’s lift–
Leo: Evil being! Demon!! Why am I being admitted to hospital!?
Izumi: You know what… it looks like you also hit your head too, so you need to be examined properly, for safety!
Tsumugi: You should also call your home and contact them with this.
Leo: Hmppphh.! (pouts)
(searching his belongings) …Huh? Hey, Sena… do you know where my smartphone is?
Izumi: Ergh… you must have dropped it again somewhere, right!? You should contact the smartphone company office…
Leo: Hmm..? (confused) I don’t really get it! (chuckles) Sena, can you do it for me? (puts his hand on Sena’s shoulder)
Tsumugi: Uhh.. (chuckles)
Izumi: (sighs burdenedly) I am… not your servant, you know…!?
Leo: Isn’t it okay? You like taking care of people, right? You can do things 100 times better than me. I can have a peaceful mind if I leave it to you! (raises his thumb)
Izumi: Honestly, it’s such~ a burden!
Leo: Don’t say it like that! I’m counting on you! (Shakes his head) No, I am owed to you!
If Sena is not there, I would have welled up quickly and quit being an idol.
Tsumugi: Hey, you two… (the lift opens)
Oh, we have arrived… look, Tsukinaga-kun.
Leo: Hmph… (pouts, walks out the lift)
Tsumugi: (walks out the lift, following Leo)
Izumi: Hey, Aoba… I’m sorry, but can I leave it to you? I have another matter to take care of…
Tsumugi, Leo: Eh?
Izumi: (closes the lift and waves his hand)
Leo: …!? (puts a surprised look)
(throw his belongings away, Tsumugi catches it. Leo walks to the closed lift) Senaaa~!! You heartless being!!! (bangs on the lift)
Tsumugi: Eh? Eeehh~!?
***
–Leo opens the hospital’s room. Eichi observes him–
Eichi (OS): It’s the boy… from earlier, right?
(Leo immediately enters the room and looks out the window)
Leo: Sena~!! Don’t abandon me! Even though you can hear it… You bully!!!
Tsumugi: I-I’m sorry, Eichi-kun!
Eichi: Tsumugi…
Tsumugi: Um… where should I begin to explain?
Leo: (picks up a fruit)
Leo: (screaming) Idiot, Sena you idiot~!! (picks up another fruit)
Stuuupid, stuupid! Just die!! (picks another fruit)
Eichi: Hey, you… (walks to Leo)
Leo: Uh…
EIchi: You can’t just play with food. Don’t you feel bad for the farmers?
Leo: I… I feel bad!
What a hideous thing I’ve done! (bows)
I’m sorry, farmers! (puts back the fruit)
But… but… what should I do with this sadness that Sena has carved in me? (points at his broken arm) My arm is broken… And there is no instrument, so I can’t do a performance too!
(looks at the bed and climbs up) I don’t have any other choice but to sing!
Eichi: Huh?
Leo: Listen to my song! This is the song of “I hope that the mean Sena will die, suffering from mould on his front legs!”
Leo: Composer and lyricist, Tsukinaga Leo! (begins to sing) I hope that the mean Sena will die, suffering from mold on his front legs~!
Eichi (OS): (smiles) Tsukinaga Leo…hmm. So that is his name. What is it with him? He’s so unique.
***
–In Yumenosaki Academy–
Madara: (attempting to catch a cat stuck on a tree branch) Look, there is nothing to be afraid of~ Come, come~
Izumi: (walks on another side of the road) Aah~ It makes me so mad!
Izumi (OS): But, why is it–That I can’t leave his side?
Izumi (OS): If it’s the usual, I would have long lost my patience and part away…
–Izumi sees another person peeking at the school gate–
Izumi: Hey, you damned glasses over there!
Arashi: (Startled) Hey, what is with that “damned glasses”? I am hurt, you know~?
Izumi: I told you to stop with that way of talking!
Why should you enter the same school, anyway~? And without even me knowing it, you had a change of character in a disgusting way!
Arashi: (smiles) Hmm… (shakes his head) Do not worry~! I do not have any interest in you at all, Izumi-chan~
Izumi: Not Izumi-chan, but Sena-senpai, right! I have told you since our first meeting to use formal language with your elder, correct?
(sighs) Haa~... Well, the timing is perfect. I am now going to practise our new song, if you’re free, then tag along… as a fellow member of the unit, okay~.
Arashi: No, no, no~ (raises his hand) I’m not particularly free, okay? And honestly I’m only filling a seat, and I don’t really have any interest in the unit activities, okay?
I don’t even clearly remember the unit’s name, you know~? Othello, is it?
Izumi: …Until last year, yeah. Since we changed leaders this year, it’s changed to the name Backgammon.
Arashi: It keeps changing indefinitely from time to time, huh? If I remember correctly, the first name was, Chess… is that right?
Izumi: Right, right. In this rotten Yumenosaki Academy, we have become the second-oldest unit now.
Izumi: Leo-kun in particular, has some kind of attachment to the Chess name, you see?. When the name was going to be changed, only he had a big objection to it.

[1]: “Who killed the Cock Robin?” Is a dark English Nursery rhyme, about the bird Cock Robin which was killed. In this Checkmate story, the poor bird who was killed refers to Leo.
