Recovering Indigenous Hawaiian Architecture, Built Ecologies: Architecture and Environment, December 13, 2022
Our Built Ecologies series continues with a look at Hawaiʻi Non-Linear, architects who are attempting to recover an Indigenous Honolulu. By dismantling the urban transformations Honolulu has undergone, architects Sean Connelly and Dominic Leong help to envision alternative futures for how this land could be used and, more importantly, for Hawaiians, to reclaim these places for the practice of Indigenous knowledge. This process of reclamation includes sacred and cultural sites that are buried under current and former military forts in Diamond Head, Punchbowl crater, and Fort DeRussy beach.
As Connelly and Leong emphasize, “The role of the architect is to help facilitate these visions rather than impose a vision upon a place.” With no distinction between architecture and environment in native Hawaiian culture, “you might even think of the entire island as architecture—the greatest building you can ever imagine.”

Nonthaburi 4 Ch R1: Dalibor Svrcina vs. Mitsuki Wei Kang Leong [Q] 6-1, 6-1 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
It was a rare masterclass from D. Svrcina, who dominated the flow from the start of the match thanks to his point construction and aggression. He asked the necessary baseline questions to Mitsuki, which he usually came up with answers from, but the latter ran out of options as soon as D. Svrcina came up with some shot winners. Somehow, Mitsuki's 100% break point conversion rate came from his 2 break-backs in both sets, but D. Svrcina generated 9 break points, converting 7 of them throughout the match, hence the demolition.
Intriguingly, this was a better serving day for D. Svrcina. The Czech won 62% of his first serve points, 48% more than the Malaysian qualifier as he dominated the flow in one way or another even though neither player was able to score an ace. However, D. Svrcina might have double-faulted thrice, but Mitsuki's second serves were not there as he only won 10% of his second serves points, 22% lower than D. Svrcina throughout the match, making it even more attack-prone on D. Svrcina's return.
D. Svrcina went on to qualify for the quarterfinals after defeating Rio Noguchi 6-4, 7-5 in a more competitive encounter, with Tung-Lin Wu being his upcoming opponent after Denis Yevseyev retired down 4-6, 1-4 in the middle of the second set. Interestingly, this would be their first-ever meeting, with their range consistency and return depth also being tested as the match progressed. Could be a tough one, given service game reliability, but who knows.

JJ Lin And Anderson .Paak's New Collaboration "In The Joy" Is Featured In East West Bank's Upcoming Documentary "The Bridge"
Tumblr media
Get ready to witness an epic collaboration between Mandopop sensation JJ Lin and Afro-Korean musician Anderson .Paak! These two musical prodigies have teamed up for the first time to produce a sensational song, "In The Joy," for the upcoming East West Bank documentary film “The Bridge.” This powerful track celebrates life's joys, promotes unity, and fosters understanding. What better way to kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May? East West Bank's Role In Empowering The Asian-Pacific American Community Step right up and get ready to be transported on a cinematic journey unlike any other! Evan Jackson Leong, the brilliant director behind "The Bridge," takes you on a captivating exploration of the Asian-Pacific American Community's rich history spanning five decades. This extraordinary documentary shines a light on the pivotal role of East West Bank, empowering countless generations of APA businesses and visionaries. Prepare to have your mind blown as you witness a thought-provoking perspective on the Asian American experience, conveyed through the unique lens of a bank founded in 1973 to serve this community. "The Bridge" is more than just a film; it's a tribute to the triumphs and struggles of an entire generation, a testament to the indomitable human spirit that continues to thrive despite adversity. As one of the largest mainstream commercial banks in the country, East West Bank has expanded its reach while maintaining a solid commitment to building bridges across communities, fostering cross-border and cross-cultural understanding, and building meaningful relationships. Celebrating The Achievements Of The APA Community As the audience watches the film, they will witness the remarkable achievements of the Asian-Pacific American (APA) community. These achievements are highlighted through various anecdotes shared by Dominic Ng, the Chairman and CEO of East West Bank, who highlights the collective successes of the APA community. Furthermore, the film includes interviews with several notable personalities, including Michelle Yeoh, an Oscar Award-winning actress; Andrew and Peggy Cherng, the CEO and Co-CEO of Panda Restaurant Group; and Janet Yang, the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, along with other prominent individuals. These interviews provide insights into the experiences, struggles, and victories of influential individuals in the APA community, adding depth and context to the film. “The Asian Pacific American community has been able to make tremendous strides in business, education, entertainment, the arts, and more in large part due to East West Bank’s support and financial commitment to this community,” said Leong, known for his films such as “Linsanity” and “Snakehead.” “While we’ve come so far, there is still more work to be done and some of those same challenges to overcome today.” Confronting Challenges And Building Bridges With Film And Song The emphasis on unity and understanding in both the film and the song aims to celebrate the incredible efforts of Asian-Pacific Americans in society. However, it also confronts the bitter truth that challenges such as prejudice and discrimination still exist. “Now more than ever, Asian Pacific Americans are empowered to make a positive impact as valued members of our society, leading to greater representation and contributions across industries,” Ng said. The East West Bank has been an integral part of bridging the gap between the East and West financially and culturally. To celebrate this remarkable achievement, the bank has come up with a unique approach to showcasing its story through film and song, offering a meaningful way to connect with the creative community. This initiative celebrates the bank's heritage and progress in the United States. In addition, it allows younger generations to experience the joy, promise, and hope of a brighter future. East West Bank CEO Dominic Ng is confident that this creative initiative will contribute significantly to preserving cultural heritage and bridging the gap between generations. By showcasing its journey through music and film, the bank aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of its heritage and culture among people of all ages and backgrounds. @remileong
Now, one thing Lai didn’t count on was Remi showing up. Thanks to recent events, Lai has developed a bit of an inferiority complex. This was supposed to be his event, his chance to shine amongst the submissives. Logically, he knows that trying to compete with a Remington Leong in the kitchen isn’t worth the time, but he’s been trapped by all the feelings recent events conjured up. More than anything, Lai needs to feel like he’s worthy of carrying the legacy of Shen perfection on his shoulders. “Yes, watching him cook truly is a spectacle--” he interjects, cutting through the silent awe of the group currently enthralled by a master chef at work. “--but, Remi? We’re supposed to be exchanging useful tips and ideas. I would never dream of telling you how to cook but ... don’t you think you’re straying a little too far from the traditional way?” Admittedly, Lai does feel a little guilty. He’s trying to garner back some of the attention he lost purely out of vanity and selfishness. These are the very kinds of thoughts the Shen’s trained Lai not to have, but after everything he simply can’t help himself. “I just don’t want to give everyone else the wrong idea about what’s proper. Not all of us will end up working in our Dominant’s restaurants like you will. I mean, truthfully we shouldn’t be modifying recipes like this unless one asks for it directly, wouldn’t you agree?” Lai doesn’t want to come across as ‘bossy’ even at an event like this, so he uses all his will power to not let his eyes give Remi a pointed look that contrasts his gentle expression.
