Finally gave DoDonPachi Resurrection a try!! I've been very intimidated by CAVE shmups........ they tend to have a LOT of going on in them, are very flashy, and I've been told about how brutally difficult they are.
But, I found that DoDonPachi Resurrection was easier to understand than I thought, AND it has generous resources + a Novice mode!! So I went ahead and got a Novice 1cc :)
Definitely going to give the regular (1.5) mode a try.
#remi plays touhou#or. uh.......#remi plays shmups#?#anyway#can you tell im fixated on shmups again. lol#im going to the arcade tomorrow to play shmups on an actual cabinet too B^)

Espgaluda II & Dodonpachi Resurrection Will Be Removed From the Switch eShop on December 2nd
A heads-up: as predicted, the other two Livewire Switch ports of Cave’s shooters are soon to be delisted. Espgaluda II and Dodonpachi Resurrection/DFK are both excellent ports of some of the best shoot ‘em ups ever made, and I’d easily recommend them to any fan of the genre. They’re feature-rich packages and the price is more than right at $19.99 each.
Following the delisting of fellow Cave port Mushihimesama a few months back, these two Livewire ports will be removed from sale on the Nintendo eShop on December 2nd of this year. Physical versions exist, published by different companies depending on which region you are in. I believe all are on paper limited releases, but it shouldn’t be too hard to chase down a copy from somewhere right now if you want one.
There’s no indication yet if the fate that befell these three ports will also come to Radiant Silvergun, also published by Livewire. But since that is a Treasure game and not a Cave game, I imagine it is safe for the time being. At any rate, get while the getting is good. I suspect Livewire will do one more sale before the end, but make a reminder for yourself for the end of this month to grab these games if you haven’t already.

The Switch version of DoDonPachi Resurrection will launch via Nintendo eShop on November 25 for $19.99, publisher Live Wire announced.
Here is an overview of the Switch version, via Nintendo.com:
Story
Six years after the battle in Lunapolis was over…
The Moon-based “DonPachi” headquarters sensed a turbulence in space-time. As a result of their investigation, it was found that it was due to a large amount of material transfer to the past. The culprit was Exy, an element doll. She would have been abandoned in a runaway battle six years ago. The battle between Axie, who plans to rewrite history, and the DonPachi army, which tries to prevent it, begins. It will be set in Japan in May 2008.The world is once again engulfed in war. The bee’s feather sound hasn’t stopped yet!
A Battle System Full of Exhilaration
Select one of the three models that are characterized by their movement speed and shot type, and sortie. Orthodox “Bomb Style” that can use bombs to counteract enemy bullets at the same time as attacking the entire screen.
Bomb hardly shoots, but “power style” that can switch shot power arbitrarily. And “strong style” that combines the two strengths. You can set the aircraft and shot style to your liking. “Hyper counter mode” that offsets enemy bullets at the same time as powering up your own machine.
Let’s lead the battle to your advantage with the “counter laser” that cancels the enemy’s laser.
Key Features
Eight modes for all DoDonPachi fans, regardless of skill level.
Novice mode prepared for beginners and arrangement mode prepared exclusively for the home version.
Strategy that spreads by “Hyper Counter” that offsets enemy bullets and “Counter Laser” that pushes back the enemy’s laser.
A battlefield with a sense of deja vu set in Tokyo in 2008.
Simultaneous recording of “Black Label” with new system.
Screen setting options that can be enjoyed in vertical mode.

ki, do you have any bullet hell games to recommend? im new to the genre and want to try different things
as a niche genre founded on its high difficulty, no matter how easy i make something sound, you need to remember that you're going to get your ass absolutely handed to you for a bit.
as a genre, bullet hell is founded on repetition, dying, and incremental progress gained through dying repeatedly. playing these games for survival is a game of resource management, using your screen clearing safety mechanics to skip past attacks you don't want to deal with while trying to not rely on them too far to where you end up spamming them.
starting with earlier windows Touhou titles (on easy, of course!) is a good way to ease yourself into the genre. more modern windows titles are on steam though, but they can be a bit rougher.
many other freeware doujin shooters are good starts as well, such as rRootage: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/rr_e.html
(i want to recommend blue wish resurrection for a doujin shooter as well, but its site seems to be down.)
if you wish to dive straight into arcade shooters, a few Cave titles have PC ports. most notable is dodonpachi resurrection (https://store.steampowered.com/app/464450/DoDonPachi_Resurrection/), which has "novice" arrange modes where enemies fire considerably fewer bullets which give you a chance to come to grips with genre fundamentals.
and, of course, maiden & spell (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1004770/Maiden_and_Spell/) is a decent introduction to the genre as well! its story mode campaigns are AI battles that culminate in special attacks the game calls "Magnus attacks" which are basically more traditional bullet hell mechanics. very heavily touhou inspired. do note however that m&s knowledge won't carry over 1:1 to other games, it'll just help you learn how to read patterns.
