I'd love to get my partner a nice rig or otherwise reusable vape, but have exactly zero idea of where to even start researching. (She goes thru vapes pretty quick and tends to get the obnoxious light up ones, but I did finally mention to her that the e-waste is part of why I'm sticking with cigs for now.) I've got some holiday money to probably(?) get a decent setup for her. Do you have any recommendations? Either for rigs themselves or where to start researching?

personally i use a pod vape and even the one i'm looking at upgrading to is still a pod mod. i know vape bros always want to reassure me that changing coils in a real mod setup isn't that hard, but you tell me i need a screwdriver at any point and you've lost me. right now i use a vaporesso xros mini that was stupid cheap, i'm planning to upgrade to a 'pod mod' system where it's still a convenient pod but i just have to swap out the coil in the middle. gimme a sec, i'll find some visual aids and put them after the cut so it doesn't look like i'm trying to convince anyone to start vaping.

okay so here is my current mini and how you refill the pod:

they seem to be using some kind of filling implement but every bottle of juice i've ever bought has a nozzle that fits right in there. the hardest part is popping the black cap off because sometimes it doesn't want to come off and it's scary and seems like it will break. but after the first time it comes off pretty easily. people will talk about soaking the wick or whatever and make it sound scary but the first time i fill a pod i let it sit 15 minutes before i use it and have no problems. i usually refill multiple times a day and the pods usually last me two weeks before augh blaugh burnt coil taste. sometimes you get a bad pod that floods a lot (bubbly noises and juice in mouf ugh augh) but that hasn't happened to me in ages.

the pods just magnetically pop onto the battery easy-peasy. it has served me well and fits nicely between my fingers the way cigarettes used to. there is no button, it's draw activated and probably as close as you can get to a disposable in functionality. pod refills come in four packs and are pretty cheap, which is great if you can get them at a local shop and less great if you have to spend twice as much as the pods cost on shipping. i keep a couple pods filled with different flavors to switch between. i buy 1.2ohm pods because i don't know shit about ohms and i don't want to.

here are the two i am considering buying as an upgrade for when i'm sitting at my desk and don't care how big and stupid-looking my vape is:

they are both vaporesso and they are both pods, but you swap out just the little coil situation in the middle instead of the whole plastic pod. they are button press instead of draw activated which i dislike because i am a lazy baby. i'm sure once you get used to it a button draw is fine but i don't waaaaannnnnaaaa. i will probably get the one on the right because it's cheaper and has a bigger battery, but the one on the left is see-through and space colors 😭 they got my millennial-ass pegged, aesthetically.

i have never had a good experience with coastal clouds juice and it seems like it's on clearance all the time for a good reason. learn from my mistakes. cloud nurdz sour watermelon strawberry has been really good, and pod juice blue razz. i might get some mystery flavors while i'm buying more pods, i haven't decided yet.

i saw a tumblr post asking people who carry bags what items are there to bring other than “chapstick, keys, phone and maybe a tampon” and tbh that stuck with me. so here is everything i keep in my bag because i like to be That Backpack Person who has everything for any common occurrence.

after years of experimenting with my everyday carry, trying out trendy backpacks such as the fjällräven kanken and the doughnut macaroon, i surprisingly now find myself reaching for the jansport right pack backpack the most.

look at it in all its glory decked out in pins, buttons, and charms. i recently wore it going apple picking at an orchard and had no issues.

so here are its contents:

front small pocket:

mini emergency kit (i’m reusing an old gum container to keep small things i find myself needing often: bandaids, painkillers, hair ties, loose cash to give to the local homeless, four quarters in case i go to ALDI or want a gumball) + pocket tissues (this is what i run low on the most) + mini UNO cards (waiting in line with friends? play UNO) + tide to go pen + 2-in-1 battery bank/plug-in charger + phone charging cable + d20 dice (stimmy)

front medium pocket:

the 24-oz owala water bottle is, and i’m not sponsored when i say this, the best water bottle i’ve ever used. the design is genius.

what do you think the greek class would think of vapes?

amusingly, i’ve already discussed this topic at astounding length with my friends, lol. something about embedding that pretentious, out-of-touch, aesthetically focused group into a modern framework is just so incredibly comical. let’s break it down.

i mean, all of them are already heavily addicted to all those other things that harm your body: cigarettes, alcohol, excessive medication… you name it. i think we’re all fooling ourselves in thinking that they would be opposed to vaping because it’s a generally new, modern concept, and doesn’t exactly fit into the aesthetic category of dark academia. they could be against indulging in them, of course, but then again, it’s nicotine. in a dire moment, none of them would say no (saying this as a smoker who would never decline a vape at a dire time). except maybe henry (for obvious reasons) or bunny who would be convinced the government was putting something in those things to establish mind control, or something.

charles would be the main consumer of them all. he would have a vape or two on him at all times, all disposables because he doesn’t give a fuck. flavor-wise, he’s a watermelon or green apple kind of guy. but he’ll take anything. if you smell that sickly sweet chemical vapor, you just know the vape is coming from his nose or mouth. he’d be addicted, for sure. i’m talking throwing tantrums when his last one runs dry or he can’t find it in his pocket kind of addicted. a literal child with a pacifier.

let’s face it, and i’m just going to say it: richard would want to consume, but he wouldn’t have the money for it. therefore i think he’d just sneak singular ones of charles’ into his pockets when he isn’t looking. stealing whatever he can get his hands on and then hiding it in his sleeve like a teenager to take a hit so charles wouldn’t notice. or: charles would feel charitable and just give him one of his out of the kindness of his heart (given that there is a corner store selling them nearby so he can stock back up).

camilla is a strawberry/raspberry/grape flavor type of girl. however, i do see her with a watermelon vape as well, probably one charles got her because he thought she would like the same thing he does. she wouldn’t be as heavily addicted; she would still prefer cigarettes (henry’s influence). still, she would be hitting 100%. i mean, her brother would be the main consumer of the group. she’d have a vape of her own on her at all times.

aesthetically, i wanna say francis wouldn’t indulge, but then again, who are we kidding. he defended cigarettes saying they’re good for you and doctors are just gaslighting us about their harm. he would definitely vape. oh, and how he would love the sweet, fruity taste. however, he’d get tired of it fast, so i definitely see him always having two polar opposite vapes on him, large (like one of those walkie-talkie-looking ones) and refillable: one of them almost strangely sweet, like bubblegum or cotton candy, and then a plain, nicotine-flavored one. like an upper and a downer. it’d be a constant mix.

i can see henry yielding to the convenience of vapes despite all aesthetic objections. of course, he’d still predominantly smoke, but he would have his trusted little vape concealed in the pocket of his coat or in his bag for emergencies. he would definitely be the type of person with a refillable, plain-flavored one, though. the one you take a hit of out of curiosity and immediately regret it because it tastes like sewer water and burns your throat. and then he has the audacity to say he enjoys it. everyone would roll their eyes at him because the fruity, sweet taste is part of the experience — an experience he obviously wouldn’t want!

as i said, bunny would be opposed to vapes for political reasons. his parents or brothers will have told him some bullshit propaganda lie about vapes and he’d think they make you grow a new limb or funnel surveillance chips into your brain or something. he would 110% be the type of guy to yell about how bad they are, only to tearfully beg for a hit when he’s drunk and then mysteriously “lose” it when you ask for it back and then proceed to empty that shit out on the same night. the full cartridge. definitely the hypocritical kind of consumer. annoying as hell and always preaching when he’s very much indulging behind closed doors.

bonus addition: judy would vape like it’s nobody’s business. her dorm room would constantly be enshrouded in vapor. one hit after the other, no-longer-can-walk-up-the-stairs-without-heaving sort of addiction. she would definitely have a refillable one, cherry-flavored mainly but also a venturer into blueberry ice. she’d yell at you for using disposables, saying how bad it is for the environment, too. giving you shop recommendations where you could get refillables. a very conscious girl.

Recycling Centre Site Visit ✨

Today I had the opportunity to visit the Hazardous Waste Recycling Centre in Gateshead (i): a tour organised by Suez, the site owner ♻️

I am pleased with how transparent Laura and Hannah, our guides, have been while explaining what happens to the local recycling and general waste. No question has been left unanswered, and topics have been discussed with the most environmentally friendly tone: everything led to the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle 🙌🏻

The overall experience exceeded my expectations as the amount of knowledge I gained was HUGE ⛰️

This is how I would summarise today’s experience in few points:

1. Disposable vapes are a PROBLEM 💨

Strangely classified by UK Legislation as “toys, leisure and sport equipment”, they have been responsible for numerous fires at the recycling centre. E-cigarettes contain lithium batteries, which can easily ignite when segregated with the other waste streams. Furthermore, recycling one 200L barrel full of disposable vapes costs more than £2000 😰

2. Machines that sort general waste out DO NOT EXIST ⚙️

Due to complex composition of general waste, there is no machine or automated process able to effectively separate non-recyclables from recyclables that ended up in the general waste. At Suez, sorting is done BY HANDS 🤲🏻

3. Energy-from-Waste (EFW) requires A LOT of ENERGY ⚡️

Suez’s EFW facility has the potential to generate enough electricity to power 30.000 homes via waste incineration. However, the majority of energy goes back into the facility to keep the process going: fire is on 24/7 🔥

4. Separate food waste segregation at home is COMING SOON 🍔

Around 6.5 MILLION tonnes of food waste come from households every year. The shocking thing is: around 70% of that food waste IS STILL EDIBLE when people dispose of it (4.5 MILLION tonnes). Suez compared it to 90 Royal Albert Halls! 😱

5. Load contamination is a serious thing ☣️

Staff works hard every day to ensure skips contain the waste they have been designed for. When hazardous materials get in the same bin with recyclables, the WHOLE load becomes hazardous. This means that all the waste contained in that bin is very likely to lose its recycling potential. As it has been said today: “It is better losing some recycling in the general waste than contaminating an entire load of recycling and losing all of it” 😞 This is such a powerful sentence.
