Thursday night we had to say goodbye to our boy Scamp. He lived a very full and happy life for nearly 13 years, but it will never feel like enough time.
Scamps life with us began when my brother chose the breed for our next family dog: a corgi. This pup was Mr. Personality! So I thought I’d make a blog for him as corgis gained popularity online. What started as this fun tumblr blog in 2013 exploded into Scamp popping up all over the internet. He got reblogged by Doctor Who, retweeted by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and his pictures-turned-uncredited-meme made Buzzfeed’s list of 40 most important corgis one year! His pictures and gifs still show up on various sites.
Scamp even helped my brother become a certified dog trainer! He was by his side quickly learning the commands and creating routines to pass tests. I illustrated 7 coloring books about Scamp which helped me pay off my student loans, so he was my business partner too!
He had many health issues through his life, but he would work miracles and bounce back time after time. The poor guy had seizures when he was younger, a blockage, a ruptured disc, cancer, chemo for a year, low blood platelets, kidney failure (which he miraculously reversed??), and vasculitis. This past summer he got very sick and we really thought he would go soon. But again Scamp worked his magic, recovered, and we got four more months with him that we didn’t expect.
He brought so much happiness to our family, and I thank you all for being part of our lives too. I will still use this blog to post old pictures of him now and then, but I will miss our photo shoots. His brother Rufus will carry on some of his traditions on Instagram if anyone would like to follow him @goldenpuprufus . And if anyone has one of Scamp’s coloring books and posts a picture of their work, please tag me or send it to my inbox- I would love to see it!
I will miss seeing him relax at the fishpond, hearing him woof for a boost into the kitchen, and waddle through the back door with that smile persuading me to give him treats. He was the best pal we could have asked for.
I know you’re looking dapper over the rainbow bridge in your bow tie. Love you, buddy.

deep in the depression today, so I could use a good discussion I think!!
Hey Dogblr, how did you get into dog training?
Looking to hear from all types of trainers, owners, etc!! Whether you're a pet owner working through basic manners and stuff by yourself, someone taking classes, a professional trainer, a sports competitor. How did you get started? What motivated you to get going?
Reblog with your story!! (I don't always get notifications on replies sooo I like reblogs lol).
My story (sorry that it's long ... I can drone on and on sometimes):
I'd always loved dogs growing up, and liked to watch those agility competitions on Animal Planet. I trained our family dog little tricks and set up obstacle courses for her and pretended my Shih Tzu was a champion agility dog lol. It wasn't until I got Haley that I actually got into training though. I got Haley as a 6 week old puppy re-home "charity case." I was 17 and didn't have a job yet and my family was not wealthy, but I used my savings from odd jobs (grass cutting, shovelling, etc) to take her to puppy classes at PetSmart. My puppy was intelligent and attentive, and that got me really interested in pursuing higher level training with her. I so learned how to clicker train in puppy class! We already had Bree at this point, but she was more of a family dog, and did not seem interested in my attempts to train her beyond the basics.
Haley developed some significant behavioural issues, mostly stemming from anxiety and lack of confidence. I started reading up on dog behaviour and training that could help her. I couldn't afford to take her to a behaviourist, so I got deep into reading whatever material I could find online and at the library and in books I asked for for birthdays and things. I kind of, I dunno, self-assessed her confidence issues and worked on building her up. We did pretty well together with my inexperienced, novice training, and she did improve.
Then I got a job and a car and could afford to spend money on Haley's training. She was a very energetic dog, and needed an outlet for her busy brain and body, so I started looking into agility classes. Despite being very shy myself, I worked up the courage to email a club, and then drive out half an hour to try out the class. Haley seemed to love it immediately!! And our trainer was really good about her anxiety, because she had dogs with that kind of issue herself. Agility was fabulous for Haley. And the agility club was really welcoming, thrilled to have a 19 year old interested in their sport. I was convinced to get very involved with the club. And then things kind of took off from there! I got into the club, I got involved in the local dog sports community, I met lots of trainers and other owners, I worked with other people's dogs, I went to classes and seminars, I tried other sports, and I did more of my own reading and research. We have been involved with disc, flyball, scentwork, lure coursing, tricks, freestyle/heelwork to music, herding.
And then I started getting interested in competitive obedience. I found a training school that offered it, but we had to work our way through all the basic levels to get there. I learned a lot in those basic pet obedience classes, and then the advanced classes too! And then we made it to competitive level and ... They weren't offering the class for that semester. But I wanted to stay in classes. So I signed up for beginner rally-o. And met a trainer who would have a huge impact on my training philosophies forever! Rally-O ended up being hugely beneficial to Haley's confidence issues. I've learned so much through rally, and all the training that surrounded it.
And so we go on from there. Now the dog who got me into training is older, fragile, and ill, and not the do-it-all badass she once was. But her list of accomplishments is pretty long for such an anxious little behavioural case, and she's overcome so much. I'm so glad to love her, and that trying to help her got me into such a cool and complex hobby. Now I'm one day hoping to get some ~ real qualifications ~ from a professional training program and be #Certified to teach other people. I still have so much to learn. I especially want to get done experience with real working dog handlers, and people who use aversive tools I don't I have experience with in real-world situations (for example: hunters using e-collars).

Lack of Movement and Back Exercises is the Number One Cause of Back Pain!
Low back pain is one of the most common ailments people suffer from and approximately 8 out of 10 people will deal with back pain at some point in their life.
That's a lot of people? are you one of them? Out of all of the various forms of back pain, lower back pain is by far the most common and there's a good explanation for this. Any idea why?
Back And Neck Pain - Who Seeks Care From Physical Therapists
It's not car accidents, it's not work-related injuries, and it's not a lack of prescription medications either. Lack of movement and use is the number one cause of back pain!
Notice the trend here? That's an awful lot of sitting and not moving. Shop for Back Extension & Lat Pulldown Machines?
youtube
Well, this is what leads to serious muscle imbalances and so what do we do, we go to the gym and perform exercises that only make the imbalances worse!
I bet your orthopedic specialist or chiropractor didn't tell you that, did they? It's the lack of movement in various muscles over the years that leads to muscle imbalances and uneven wear and tear on your body, especially the spine.
For example, how many times a day are you bending, leaning, or twisting. Here's what the typical person's day is like:
Wake up
Eat breakfast (hopefully)
Drive or ride to work
Sit at desk
Eat lunch
Sit at the desk some more
Drive or ride home
Eat dinner
Sit on the couch and watch tv
Go to bed
The key to eliminating back pain (nearly any ache, pain, or injury for that matter) is to identify the muscle imbalances that are pulling the spine, bones, and joints out of place and then stretch the tight muscles while strengthening the weak muscles.
How do I know this? Well, as a certified personal fitness trainer and post-rehabilitation specialist, I have worked with hundreds of individuals with back pain and the conditions that ranged from sciatic pain to bulging discs, to spinal fusion, and others. In working with these individuals I discovered some startling facts.
Many people who seek professional help are often misdiagnosed and end up following a treatment plan that fails to eliminate the cause of their back pain.
Nearly all of the individuals I worked with were able to eliminate their back pain, or significantly improve their condition even though all of the traditional treatments failed them (physically therapy, chiropractic care, cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications, surgery, etc). Even more amazing is the fact that most of these individuals were able to eliminate their back pain in a matter of days or weeks simply by performing a handful of exercises and stretches! These weren't your basic exercises or the standard back stretches and stomach exercises most experts? recommend? these were specific exercises and stretches prescribed based on the individual. Many of these people had suffered for years and years with aches, pains, and stiffness and lived inactive lives because of their back pain.
Most treatment plans offered only address the symptoms and don's address the cause, which usually delivers just temporary relief for the individual. In addition to helping hundreds of others eliminate back pain, I also have had personal experiences with back pain and other various conditions such as tendonitis, muscle strains and sprains, and more. In every single situation, the traditional treatments did nothing but treat the symptoms (oftentimes not successfully) and the only approach that gave lasting improvements and relief was targeted stretches and exercises.
Have you tried traditional treatments and found little relief? I am not saying these treatments are not effective at temporarily reducing the pain or inflammation, but I am saying nearly all fail to get rid of the underlying cause of the problem.
How is Osteoporosis Treated?
So how do you identify these muscle imbalances?
Well, it isn't easy but with a basic understanding of how your body works, you can at least start looking at your situation and find out which muscles are overworked and too strong and/or tight and which ones are too weak and stretched out.
How Can I Get Relief from Pain?
It also helps if you can find a qualified health professional who specializes in identifying muscle imbalances.
Unfortunately, there are still a few professionals who use what I call the common sense approach.?
How to Relieve Upper Back Pain
However, your best bet is to look for a personal fitness trainer that is trained and certified in post-rehabilitation, a manual physical therapist, or an osteopath.
Shop for Back Extension & Lat Pulldown Machines
Also, don's be afraid to ask questions... you need to take charge of your health care and be sure to quiz them to find out what type of approach they take in treating back pain. Shop for Back Extension & Lat Pulldown Machines for your back. I wish you the best and remember the key to a healthy back is a movement!

WHY MASSAGE HAS NOT WORKED FOR YOU IN THE PAST Many massage treatments that are available consist of the bare minimum of techniques taught in massage school. Most massage techniques are used with very little medical understanding or justification. Put simply, the most common mistake made by massage therapists is that they work with extreme pressure mainly in the areas of the body which hurt. Very often the muscles that hurt are the weakest muscles. When a therapists works heavily in these areas only, it further weakens the tissue. This often creates more pain and puts the joint at risk for injury. The entire muscular system and every joint MUST have balance; an evenness of strength and length supporting it from every angle. I use a necessary combination of trigger point therapy, myofascial release, deep tissue massage and gentle relaxation massage to address the root cause of pain. The secret of my success is in understanding how each of the muscles affect each other, the bones and the movement of the body as a whole. Dog Collars can be a danger to your dog. Choke Collars, Prong Collars or Dog Harness which one is more dangerous?
When your Dog gets choked by his Dog Collar, your dog starts to panic.
3 weeks ago I had the scariest moment in my life. I will not forget it so fast. When I think back, I still have the picture of my dog totally in panic in my mind.
My friend Sally came over 3 weeks ago, with her dogs and of course for a cup of coffee. We thought it will be a nice and quiet time, boy have we been wrong it was one of the scariest times in my life. Sally is my friend, and she comes over on a regular base, our Dog's love to play with each other on a weekly base. Her dogs and our dogs are friends, especially Charly and Sammy. Although both dogs are different in size and breed somehow, those two have formed a special bond.
Playtime with Dogs.
As always Charly and Sammy play together out in the garden, I nearly choked on my piece of cake when I heart this howl of pain and panic from Charly or was it, Sammy? My heart stopped for a moment, and we ran into the garden, and there were Charly and Sammy stuck together. It took me a while to understand that Charly caught his teeth in the Collar of Sammy. My friend and tried to separate them but it was impossible, I ran inside the house and got a scissor. Sally was trying to keep Charly calm and remove his stuck teeth. I tried to cut the Collar, and it was not easy, as I was worry, I will stab one of the dogs with the scissors. Did not have blunt scissors I used the normal scissors. ( the next day I went and bought blunt scissors.)
Lucky for us, it was a nylon collar, and it was not difficult to cut the Collar of Sammy. After the dogs were safe, and we could then attend to their emotional condition. Both dogs were whining and shaking. Lucky both dogs did not blame the other Dog and hold a grudge towards each other. Charly and Sammy are still friends. We went with both dogs to the Vet to see if Charly has injured his mouth or his teeth. Both dogs are fine, and none of them had injuries or needed medical care. The Vet said both dogs are a bit bruised but nothing serious.
When should a dog wear a dog collar?
My dogs do not wear a collar when they are at home with us. I know it is a must in some countries as the dog tags are on the Collar and by law, dogs must wear them all the time. On the other hand, dog collars are helpful to dogs in many ways, but they can also pose dangers. Some dog collars that are available on the market are dangerous to dogs. For example, the choke collars, I believe it is such a cruel invention, and for me, it makes dogs aggressive. On the other hand, Dog collars are useful. Dog Collars ID Tag and Owners Address.
A lot of dog collars have the dog tag attached, and for that reason, a lot of dogs have been safely returned to their owner when they got lost. Dog Collars allow people to control the Dog with or without a leash. Most Dog owners hold on to their Dog through the dog collar. Dog collars can be very stylish, but that doesn't mean they are practical and do not hurt your Dog. Unfortunately, a dog collar is attached around the neck of a dog and therefore post a danger. There are cases where dogs are injured, even fatally when a dog with his Collar got caught in things like heating vents, fences, crates, branches or other collars. Most common accidents that I heard about is a dog's lower jaw getting stuck in the Collar during play and cause strangulation.
Dog Collars that can be dangerous to for your Dog.
Choke Collars
These collars can be extremely dangerous to your Dog. Those Choke collars are associated with following injuries. # Crushing of the Trachea # Fainting # Spinal Cord Injuries # Partial or complete asphyxiation # Whiplash # Paralysis # Dislocation of the vertebrae in the neck # Brain damage and prolapsed eyes caused by sharp increases in pressure in the head and other injuries. # Bruising of the Oesophagus (The oesophagus is a muscular tube connecting the throat (pharynx) with the stomach. The oesophagus is about 8 inches long and lined by moist pink tissue called mucosa. The oesophagus runs behind the windpipe (trachea) and heart, and in front of the spine.) Choke Collars can have psychological consequences for your Dog. If a dog is frequently choked with a choke collar, he probably becomes frightened or aggressive. Experienced Dog Trainers might see it differently, but using choke collars should not be a permanent solution. When you use a choke collar, ask a certified dog trainer for the proper usage. Prong Collars A prong collar mimics the instinctive communication tool between dogs. The metal spikes around a prong collar pinch the skin around dogs' necks when they pull and can scratch or puncture them.
A prong collar mimics the instinctive communication tool between dogs. The metal spikes around a prong collar pinch the skin around dogs' necks when they pull and can scratch or puncture them. When dogs play with each other, they do bite each other's ears, neck skin or other parts of the dog body. There is no blood, no fight, no puncture holes afterwards. Somehow dogs do communicate with each other even it involves teeth to the skin. Those bites are not in any case used to cause injury or harm to the other Dog. It is just a way of saying listen to me. Mother dogs teach their puppies submission. That is the same what a prong collar supposed to do. Said that you have to know how to use a prong collar, it needs the right adjustment and professional help when you do not want to injure your Dog. # Caution when you use a prong collar! Over time, this can cause dogs to develop scar tissue (which has no feeling) and build up a tolerance to the painful pinching sensation and thus continue to pull, making walks even more difficult. My advise when you use a Prong collar, get professional help and understand how to use it. Buckle Collars, there are plenty on the market, but which one is the right one for you?
Dog Collars are a great idea to hold the Dog's ID and the Dog Tag. I would not use a dog collar when I walk my dogs. I do not like to pull my Dog on their neck if it is necessary, it can cause injury too. When a dog is leashed by the neck even with a simple buckle collar, it can be painful to a dog, when the Dog pulls or lunge. It can put pressure on the trachea, the spinal cords, the oesophagus and the vertebral discs.
Dog Harness a solution to the Dog Collar.
If you walk your Dog for his safety and comfort using a harness. It alleviates any pressure on the neck, and a dog harness makes it easier to pull dogs out of any trouble they might get in. There are lots of harnesses to choose from. If your dog is walking with you, instead you walking with the Dog, then you should consider dog training. Teach your Dog How to walk heel. It is fun for you and your Dog. The Trainer Harness is made for dogs who pull a lot. It has a front leash attachment that helps to redirect a lunging dog back to you. Another great benefit is that it is comfortable for your Dog, and it helps even with strong pulling dogs without doing any harm. If your Dog enjoys the walks with you and is listening to you, then you can use any harness that is safe, suitable and comfortable for your Dog.
A piece of advice, The KeepSafe Break-Away Collar.
Since we had the incident the last time with Sammy and Charly, we let our dogs now play without collars. When we go to the dog park, we take them off. But if we are not able to take them off, we will use the keep safe breakaway dog collar. Those collars are available click here. The KeepSafe Break-Away Collar has a safety buckle that releases when significant pressure is applied to them. The safety buckle has a D-ring on either side of it so the breakaway section can be by-passed for leash walks by attaching a leash to both D-rings. I love the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar as it helps us as Pet Parents to protect our dogs, with a patented safety buckle that releases in an emergency. The KeepSafe Break-Away Collar is available in different sizes to fit any size of Dog. A small piece of advice when you walk with your Dog and you use the standard buckle collar with the ID Tag and Address Tag, change to the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar.
Dog Park and other Dogs.
If you can not and you go to the dog park take a pocketknife or blunt scissors with you. In case your dog gets caught with his collar somewhere to cut off the dog collar. Be aware when you use a pocketknife in case of an emergency with the sharp knife you can injure your dog. When you use a metal collar, then there is no use in having a scissor or pocketknife handy. Avoid metal collars when going to the dog park or when your dogs play with other dogs. As metal collars are difficult to be cut or detangled.
KeepSafe Break-Away Collar.
You have the option to buy the keep safe Breakaway Collar or also called quick-release collars. Do your Dog and yourself a favour and avoid accidents like the one I had. Dogs like to play, and sometimes they do play a bit wilder. For your dog safety take off the Collar during playtime or get the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar for your Dog. Especially when you are in a country where a dog collar with Dog ID and Address is a must.
Designed to prevent dogs from getting entangled by their collars, the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar has a patented break-away safety buckle that releases when pressure is applied. If your dog's collar gets stuck on something and starts to choke, the buckle releases and the collar falls off harmlessly. Most collar accidents happen when multiple dogs are playing at home, at the dog park, or in doggie daycare or when the collar gets stuck on a fence, deck, crate, kennel, vent, bush, or tree. When you're ready for a walk, hook the leash clip around the 2 D-rings to prevent the buckle from breaking away. Collar-related accidents are more common than you think. A survey of veterinarians, trainers, and doggie daycare professionals found that more than 50% of pet professionals have experienced a collar-related accident with a dog. Over 26,000 collar-related accidents occur each year - that's an average of 71 a day! The KeepSafe Break-Away Collar is the only collar that provides 24/7 protection for your dog. https://youtu.be/2ZGBqojERb4 Buy now the Keep Safe Break Away Collar Share this blog with family and friends and let us know if you have experienced playing dogs who get caught in the Collar of another dog.
