Your head void of any other thoughts, you stated bluntly, "I'm running late." With those words you turned to Reiner, a surge of hope and pleading momentarily glimmered in your eyes, desperate for a solution to your predicament. However, as the weight of the situation fully settled in, a new wave of despair crashed over you, overwhelming you with the number of all the tasks that needed to be accomplished in such a short amount of time. That initial glint of hope irrevocably faded, replaced by a deep sense of worry and frustration.

Ever the paragon of composure (at least when it came to your predicaments), Reiner flashed a reassuring smile at you. "Not to worry," he mused, his voice laced with warmth. "I've already taken care of a few things for you." As you stood there, momentarily dumbfounded by his thoughtfulness, he gently nudged you toward the bathroom. "Just go and start off the day while I finish up some other tasks. Alright?"

As it turned out, Reiner took his time in the morning to fix up a breakfast for you and iron your outfit for the day. As you sat at the kitchen counter, gobbling up the prepared meal in haste, Reiner exuded strange serenity unfit for the rush of the mornings that somehow transferred to you too. So much so, that when you were standing in the hallway waiting for the cab (another courtesy of Reiner) you were absolutely calm as if coming in late wasn't a threat anymore.

As you were about to leave, Reiner handed you a container and explained under the unspoken question of your eyes. "Packed some lunch for you." Clarification sounded so simple coming out of his mouth yet it still swelled your chest with affection. A belated surge of tenderness overcame you, and you leaned in to leave a gentle peck on his cheek, before leaving for the cab.

The soft rays of the morning light filtered through the curtains as the alarm clock in its infinite persistence urged you to wake up. Trying to cover up the boiling irritation, you pleaded with him one last time, "I have to get up. Mind you, we both have work today," you pointed out and followed with a reasonable, at least at first glance, argument. "Doubt that your patients would be all that happy to not see you at your office today."

"Oh, I'm afraid they'll have to deal with that," he rebuked in a state of absolute calm, "The same goes for your boss."

Shifting around in his embrace to find some sort of comfort, you furrowed your brows in confusion. "The fuck you mean?" you asked him bluntly, running out of patience and time to get ready.

His whole body trembled as curt laughter escaped his chest. "Well, it has come to my attention that both of us contracted a rare strain of disease and — oh no — it's extremely contagious and dangerous to the outside world so we must quarantine for the rest of the day." To add defiance to his words and irate you even more, he nestled closer, his beard scratching at your skin. "As you can see, I'm already taking measures. It's you who's the irresponsible one right now."

"You talking forgery," you rebuked meekly yet it didn't seem to get a rise out of him. "Not if you're a real doctor which, luckily, I am."

You still seemed tense when his hot breath seered against your ear, "Relax, we're sleeping in today."

A valid excuse provided, you melted into his touch as you finally caved to his request. "You're very fortunate to have me, you know? Maybe reconsider to start appreciating me some more." The playfulness to his voice quickly faded off into the distance as you fell back asleep.

I closed my eyes, trying to settle into the dead leaves beneath me and waited to die. 

Not too far away, I heard the howl of a wolf ring out into the great expansive night. A small smile pulled at my chapped lips. At last, I believed, The Great Beast of the Wood would come and kindly kill me before enjoying its last meal of the evening. I barely noticed the sound of rustling brush until it became apparent it was coming towards me. The forest easily bent and broke under its mighty paws, I imagined. The Great Beast, the lone Werewolf, seemed to slow its approach as it reached me. He leaned back on his hind legs and stood like a human would, though still hunched forward. He walked over the brush at the edge of the path and loomed over me, blocking the full moon light and casting his enormous shadow over my pathetic form. Despite already having adjusted to the low light of the night, I could not make out much of his monstrous features. What was very apparent was just how large he was, as he might have stood at a greater height than the tallest centaur I’ve ever seen. His body was covered with thick, dark fur, which made it even more difficult to discern anything in the shadow of the Great Moon. His hands-paws?- were malformed with large sharp claws on each of long digits. I could tell it was blood that gleamed as it fell from his maw and talons. I could smell the metallic scent off him. Suddenly, the Beast quieted his panting and closed his mouth. 

My body trembled with great effort as I crane my neck up to look at his face again. His eyes were a bright amber and seemed to glow intensely. I couldn’t interpret his intention from their crazed look, but I was keenly aware from the fact that he hadn’t descended on me that he was considering his options. Perhaps he was trying to figure out the best way to kill me with the least amount of effort, as if I was in any position to put up a fight.

Several agonizing moments passed, my heart beat being the only sound in my strained ears. A gust blew past him towards me and I couldn’t help but inhale deeply his scent as I closed my eyes. I was familiar with the new and old scent of spilled blood making up the odor profile and yet, I was surprised to notice a strong, warm musky aroma. Then, terrible news threatens to break the family apart: The country hospital where Midori gave birth to Keita calls the couple to tell them that they may have made a mistake six years ago by mixing up Keita's birth parents with those of another baby. DNA tests prove what the parents feared most: The child they've come to know and love isn't their own. It's the son of Yukari and Yudai Saiki, a working-class couple from a nearby town. They both gave birth in the same hospital at the same time, and they've been raising Ryusei (Shôgen Hwang), the Nonomiyas' son, along with their own children for years. Koreeda's best work in this movie is making sure that all of these native differences, these invisible limits that hang in the air, are clear throughout the whole story. Other Asian imports, like Lee Chang-dong's play Poetry, could be hard to understand, but Like Father never is. When one of the characters acts in a way that seems strange to people in the West, we know where that behavior comes from.

The saga is uniquely Japanese in another strange but wonderful way: it feels like a family story. In place of a typical Hollywood story with an A-B-C progression and a predictable ending that strains credibility, Koreeda gives us a deliberately vague meditation that drifts slowly through the lives of its characters, swimming in observations of their actions that float in and out of the frame. Each insight, in turn, adds a piece to a huge puzzle of futility. Even though we can explain how and why each psychological response happens, we can't even begin to come up with a solution to the main problem at hand, which seems completely right.

As he did in his 2008 masterpiece, Still Walking, Koreeda has a poet's eye for the subtleties of people. In this movie, there are two scenes that are as well-observed as anything else he's ever done.
