Some locomotives in the Chernoybl Exclusion zone were caught in the initial accident, being written off in the coming months as hull-losses and shoved to the side. Some were brought there by Ukraine's railways, in order to maintain the service that connects the Power Plant to the city of Slavutych. And a few were brought in expressly to clean up the power plant. These sidelined locomotives are examples of the latter. As a preface, the USSR's railways were exceedingly, exceedingly important to transportation, carrying more freight-per-ton than the US's network for several years in the closing decades of the 1900s. Effectively, in the months following the accident, the Soviet Ministry of Railways operationally disconnected the railways within the zone. The railway from Vilcha to Iolcha's fleet was completely segregated, with a special depot being opened up quickly to disinfect the wagons periodically.
By 1990, the radiation had stabilized to the point that the system ended, and trains for the district were maintained with the normal EMU pool. Despite setbacks from having to turn a single-track, non-electrified line that saw, at most, 16 trains per day into a high-capacity industrial operation, railways were a major, major help.
And that circles us back to the earlier photo. There wasn't a way to do things via remote control within the reactor, nor at the capacities needed. As history has shown, flying helicopters around a power plant at low levels is also not a good idea. The main solution was leverage the plant's pre-existing rail connections to transport materials to the cleanup. As part of this, a pair of TEM2UM diesel locomotives were redirected from their original destinations for operation within the plant, arriving in July. (Previously, the plant itself had used a number of TGK2 and TGM1 shunters, but all apparently were casualties of irradiation. Several TGM23 and TGM4 units were coexistant with the TEM2s, but it's unknown if they were used as much, and they probably didn't have similar setups.) The Ministry of Railways, at least, was not satisfied with the cab on locomotives venturing closely to ground zero. These would be operating within the plant itself, moving materials to staging areas for construction of the Sarcophagus and further remediation. There was, however, a solution.
A standard flatcar, with a lead control cabin mounted on it, and connected to the TEM2s.
Instead of working in the locomotive's cab, you'd work here, looking through these tiny slats. But, believe it or not, this did end up working. The locomotives served operationally until at least the mid-2000s, when they were dumped at Yanov. The lead boxes were removed, and they were basically left to rot. In recent years, one of the two has been cut up. Their replacements are from the same series, being TEM18s, and are maintained just outside the zone in a small depot at Slayutych.

Study finds health risks in switching ships from diesel to ammonia fuel

Study finds health risks in switching ships from diesel to ammonia fuel
As container ships the size of city blocks cross the oceans to deliver cargo, their huge diesel engines emit large quantities of air pollutants that drive climate change and have human health impacts. It has been estimated that maritime shipping accounts for almost 3 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions and the industry’s negative impacts on air quality cause about 100,000 premature deaths each year.
Decarbonizing shipping to reduce these detrimental effects is a goal of the International Maritime Organization, a U.N. agency that regulates maritime transport. One potential solution is switching the global fleet from fossil fuels to sustainable fuels such as ammonia, which could be nearly carbon-free when considering its production and use.
But in a new study, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from MIT and elsewhere caution that burning ammonia for maritime fuel could worsen air quality further and lead to devastating public health impacts, unless it is adopted alongside strengthened emissions regulations.
Ammonia combustion generates nitrous oxide (N2O), a greenhouse gas that is about 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. It also emits nitrogen in the form of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2, referred to as NOx), and unburnt ammonia may slip out, which eventually forms fine particulate matter in the atmosphere. These tiny particles can be inhaled deep into the lungs, causing health problems like heart attacks, strokes, and asthma.
The new study indicates that, under current legislation, switching the global fleet to ammonia fuel could cause up to about 600,000 additional premature deaths each year. However, with stronger regulations and cleaner engine technology, the switch could lead to about 66,000 fewer premature deaths than currently caused by maritime shipping emissions, with far less impact on global warming.
“Not all climate solutions are created equal. There is almost always some price to pay. We have to take a more holistic approach and consider all the costs and benefits of different climate solutions, rather than just their potential to decarbonize,” says Anthony Wong, a postdoc in the MIT Center for Global Change Science and lead author of the study.
His co-authors include Noelle Selin, an MIT professor in the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society and the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS); Sebastian Eastham, a former principal research scientist who is now a senior lecturer at Imperial College London; Christine Mounaïm-Rouselle, a professor at the University of Orléans in France; Yiqi Zhang, a researcher at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and Florian Allroggen, a research scientist in the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The research appears this week in Environmental Research Letters.
Greener, cleaner ammonia
Traditionally, ammonia is made by stripping hydrogen from natural gas and then combining it with nitrogen at extremely high temperatures. This process is often associated with a large carbon footprint. The maritime shipping industry is betting on the development of “green ammonia,” which is produced by using renewable energy to make hydrogen via electrolysis and to generate heat.
“In theory, if you are burning green ammonia in a ship engine, the carbon emissions are almost zero,” Wong says.
But even the greenest ammonia generates nitrous oxide (N2O), nitrogen oxides (NOx) when combusted, and some of the ammonia may slip out, unburnt. This nitrous oxide would escape into the atmosphere, where the greenhouse gas would remain for more than 100 years. At the same time, the nitrogen emitted as NOx and ammonia would fall to Earth, damaging fragile ecosystems. As these emissions are digested by bacteria, additional N2O is produced.
NOx and ammonia also mix with gases in the air to form fine particulate matter. A primary contributor to air pollution, fine particulate matter kills an estimated 4 million people each year.
“Saying that ammonia is a ‘clean’ fuel is a bit of an overstretch. Just because it is carbon-free doesn’t necessarily mean it is clean and good for public health,” Wong says.
A multifaceted model
The researchers wanted to paint the whole picture, capturing the environmental and public health impacts of switching the global fleet to ammonia fuel. To do so, they designed scenarios to measure how pollutant impacts change under certain technology and policy assumptions.
From a technological point of view, they considered two ship engines. The first burns pure ammonia, which generates higher levels of unburnt ammonia but emits fewer nitrogen oxides. The second engine technology involves mixing ammonia with hydrogen to improve combustion and optimize the performance of a catalytic converter, which controls both nitrogen oxides and unburnt ammonia pollution.
They also considered three policy scenarios: current regulations, which only limit NOx emissions in some parts of the world; a scenario that adds ammonia emission limits over North America and Western Europe; and a scenario that adds global limits on ammonia and NOx emissions.
The researchers used a ship track model to calculate how pollutant emissions change under each scenario and then fed the results into an air quality model. The air quality model calculates the impact of ship emissions on particulate matter and ozone pollution. Finally, they estimated the effects on global public health.
One of the biggest challenges came from a lack of real-world data, since no ammonia-powered ships are yet sailing the seas. Instead, the researchers relied on experimental ammonia combustion data from collaborators to build their model.
“We had to come up with some clever ways to make that data useful and informative to both the technology and regulatory situations,” he says.
A range of outcomes
In the end, they found that with no new regulations and ship engines that burn pure ammonia, switching the entire fleet would cause 681,000 additional premature deaths each year.
“While a scenario with no new regulations is not very realistic, it serves as a good warning of how dangerous ammonia emissions could be. And unlike NOx, ammonia emissions from shipping are currently unregulated,” Wong says.
However, even without new regulations, using cleaner engine technology would cut the number of premature deaths down to about 80,000, which is about 20,000 fewer than are currently attributed to maritime shipping emissions. With stronger global regulations and cleaner engine technology, the number of people killed by air pollution from shipping could be reduced by about 66,000.
“The results of this study show the importance of developing policies alongside new technologies,” Selin says. “There is a potential for ammonia in shipping to be beneficial for both climate and air quality, but that requires that regulations be designed to address the entire range of potential impacts, including both climate and air quality.”
Ammonia’s air quality impacts would not be felt uniformly across the globe, and addressing them fully would require coordinated strategies across very different contexts. Most premature deaths would occur in East Asia, since air quality regulations are less stringent in this region. Higher levels of existing air pollution cause the formation of more particulate matter from ammonia emissions. In addition, shipping volume over East Asia is far greater than elsewhere on Earth, compounding these negative effects.
In the future, the researchers want to continue refining their analysis. They hope to use these findings as a starting point to urge the marine industry to share engine data they can use to better evaluate air quality and climate impacts. They also hope to inform policymakers about the importance and urgency of updating shipping emission regulations.
This research was funded by the MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium.

Contingency Plan. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, there was extensive damage across the northeast Unites States to public transportation. Although most of the MTA LIRR rolling stock was protected, the tracks themselves could not be moved, nor third rail electric systems that power the trains. The solution for the Long Beach Branch was to offer diesel shuttle service to the Lynbrook Station and offer transfers to the rest of the system from there. On November 15, 2012, LI 403 (DE30AC, EMD, 1997-1999) brings a 4-car double ended train (with LI 402 at the other end) of C3 model cars across Wreck Lead Channel over the Wreck Lead Bridge from Island Park to the terminal in Long Beach, New York. Under normal circumstances the line is served exclusively by the Long Island Rail Road's fleet of electric MU M3/M7/M9s with trains as long as 12 cars.

Formula 1 to introduce biofueled trucks for European races in 2023 season
Formula 1 to introduce biofueled trucks for European races in 2023 season By Balazs Szabo on 02 Jun 2023, 08:00 Formula One will make another important step to achieve its sustainability goals by introducing biofueled trucks for European races in 2023 season in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions. Marking the latest innovation by the sport to introduce more sustainable logistical solutions as part of its efforts to reach Net Zero by 2030, Formula 1 and DHL have today announced that the European leg of the 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship is being delivered using biofueled truck. According to the calculations, the switch to biofueled trucks will reduce carbon emissions by a minimum of 60% when compared to standard fuels, with the potential for higher savings. This DHL’s first biofuel truck fleet is made up of 18 new trucks running on HVO100 drop-in fuel (hydrotreated vegetable oil). The new trucks, which will travel around 10,600 kilometres across this season’s European races, will reduce carbon emissions while maintaining the same level of performance in terms of load capacity and travel distance as their diesel counterparts and provide a safer and more sustainable process of sourcing. DHL trucks are also equipped with GPS to monitor fuel consumption and optimise more efficient routes While the sport continues to make steps towards the introduction of an advanced sustainable fuel in 2026, it has introduced a series of initiatives recently, including switching to an increased remote broadcast operation, testing multimodal transport opportunities such as overland and ocean freight, and redesigning freight containers to fit on to the more efficient Boeing 777 aircrafts, reducing carbon emissions by 18% compared to traditional aircraft, the 747. Commenting on the announcement, Head of ESG at Formula 1 Ellen Jones said: “We are a sport which operates on a global scale and DHL play a critical role in delivering the races and helping us address the logistical impact we have as a World Championship. "Together we are continually looking for more sustainable solutions, and through innovations such as the biofueled trucks we’re able to take the next step forward in reducing our carbon emissions and achieving our sustainability goal of being Net Zero by 2030. It is wonderful to see partners like DHL share the same drive and commitment to creating a more sustainable Formula 1.” Head of Global Brand Marketing at Deutsche Post DHL Group Arjan Sissing commented: “Our partnership with Formula 1 also showcases our shared dedication to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. Typical Logistics Issues and Problem-solving tips
Introduction
There are still a few key issues that frequently reappear despite the logistics sector's ongoing evolution and integration of cutting-edge technologies into local and global supply chains. We'll examine a few of the most prevalent logistics issues the sector faces in this blog post, along with solutions for avoiding their negative impacts.
Want to be certain that you are overcoming all the typical logistical obstacles without skipping a beat? Make an appointment for your free consultation with the Best Logistic Company in India, and let our logistics experts teach you how to create a supply chain that is more able to withstand logistical issues in the future.
Following Issues and Tips
1. Warehouse Management Errors
Even while we make every effort to keep everything at warehouses and distribution centers functioning without a hitch, mistakes can nevertheless happen. Human errors can be expensive if they are not controlled, whether it be a misplaced product, picking, packaging, shipping problems, incomplete orders, or damage to things during storage. Utilizing efficient and modern warehouse management systems is a surefire strategy to lower these types of errors.
By incorporating more recent technology, such as voice picking, automated picking and packing systems, mobile picking apps, and more, operations can be made more efficient and error-free. The danger of harm or error is also reduced by ensuring that warehouse staff is properly trained and that policies clearly outline where and how the goods are to be handled.
2. Delivery Commodities
Delivery of commodities and products can be slowed down or even halted by manufacturing closures, port capacity concerns, pandemic reactions, labor strikes, piracy, riots, and any number of other disruptive events. These are the dangers associated with a global supply chain, hence it is essential to have multiple supply sources as well as backup delivery options. Slowdowns and delays can also be brought on by infrastructure problems, such as ports' inability to handle the enormous volume of incoming shipments, the impact of labor shortages on freight fleets, and the declining availability of drivers.
3. Transportation Costs
In the logistics sector, reducing transportation costs is nearly always a major concern, and supply chain management typically has little direct control over the solution. Thoughtful planning and inventive solutions are needed to keep transportation expenses as low as possible, even if fuel prices vary according to the market and are frequently rising. Increasing freight rates, gasoline surcharges, and diesel fuel prices can all seem overwhelming.
Costs can be considerably reduced by combining goods and using all available space for transport. Effective and honest communication with carriers is necessary for this. In rare circumstances, fewer carriers can also make a difference.
4. Fragmented Communication
Snags are inevitable in the logistics supply chain since it has so many linkages, from production to distribution and everything in between, from manufacturing to transport. Since there are so many potential points of breakdown in communication, finding and correcting potential faults can be challenging. The adoption of efficient communication and visibility software tools, which are frequently immediately linked to warehouse management systems and have open access to clients and partners, helps ease this. Issues are more easily remedied before they turn into major snafus when everyone involved, including end-use consumers expecting a delivery, has access to the product as it travels through the various stages of production and distribution.

Fun story.
Australia is famously pretty bad at regional rail transport, and my state, New South Wales (NSW), is probably the worst at it out of the whole country. NSW's primary rail transport network consists of 19 of these things — XPTs (eXpress Passenger Transport) — which, while state-of-the-art in the 1980s when they were being built, are over 40 years old at this point and have been largely unrefurbished since the 1990s. XPTs in the modern era are famous for being slow, faulty, arthritic and uncomfortable.
However, in 1988, when the XPTs were still brand-new, the conservative NSW state government of the time commissioned a report from American consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, a firm otherwise largely known for advising the UAE on how to set up their digital surveillance state, regarding the future of rail transport in NSW. The issue that the government had was that the XPT just wasn't profitable enough. Booz Allen Hamilton's solution was not to increase advertising for rail transport, lower the cost of tickets, run more frequent services or anything else. Their solution, on purely economic grounds, was to scrap long-distance rail transit in NSW entirely.
If you're a capitalist, this makes sense. The population of NSW is too small and too sparsely populated for any regional rail network to be profitable. However. Many small towns in regional NSW are reliant on regional rail, the XPT in particular, for connection to each other and to the state's major cities, and without it, they would be pretty much entirely isolated from the wider world. Regional towns in NSW have had next to no economic support from the state government for decades now and are almost unilaterally deeply poverty-stricken; if you live in one of these towns, access to a car is going to be unlikely at best, and access to a car that is capable of driving the ~150km to the next town over, let alone up to 500km to a major city, might be nigh impossible. If the state government had accepted the outcome of Booz Allen Hamilton's report, regional NSW would be dead.
Thankfully, they didn't, and we still have trains. In fact, within the next few years, the XPTs are getting replaced with a larger fleet of new diesel/electric trains, hopefully bringing NSW up to par with the rest of the country. But ultimately, had NSW's government followed the money, they would have found themselves with an absolute disaster on their hands.
Trains are good, people.
People who talk about what population density is necessary to "justify" a rail system are wrong but they're wrong in the opposite way from how they think. Even in Japan which has more than twice the population density of China the rail system is not profitable. JR makes most of its profit by operating malls and collecting rent from vendors. If you blindly follow profit instead of considering the broader social benefits the result will always be putting your rail system into a death spiral of rationalization. Stop expecting public transport to turn a profit that's not what it exists for.

Maximizing Fuel Efficiency with Bulk Diesel: Tips for Businesses
Fuel costs are one of the most significant expenses for many businesses, particularly those in industries that rely on large fleets of vehicles or heavy machinery. Bulk diesel fuel is a practical and cost-effective solution to help manage fuel consumption more efficiently. For businesses that depend on diesel-powered equipment, maximizing fuel efficiency can lead to substantial savings, reduced carbon footprints, and improved overall operational productivity.
In this article, we will explore how businesses can optimize their fuel usage with bulk diesel fuel. We will discuss strategies to enhance fuel efficiency, including the importance of proper storage, maintenance, and tracking fuel consumption. Additionally, we will look into how businesses can benefit from bulk diesel fuel and some best practices for keeping fuel costs under control.
What is Bulk Diesel Fuel?
Bulk diesel fuel refers to large quantities of diesel that businesses purchase and store for ongoing operational needs. Instead of buying smaller, retail quantities of diesel, bulk diesel fuel allows businesses to secure larger volumes at a lower price per unit, which can lead to significant savings over time. Bulk diesel fuel is commonly used in industries such as transportation, agriculture, construction, and mining, where fuel demands are high, and vehicles or machinery operate continuously.
The Benefits of Bulk Diesel Fuel for Businesses
One of the primary advantages of purchasing bulk diesel fuel is the cost savings. Bulk purchases typically offer a significant discount compared to smaller retail transactions, allowing businesses to take advantage of economies of scale. Additionally, purchasing fuel in larger quantities reduces the frequency of fuel deliveries, which can be particularly beneficial for businesses operating in remote locations where delivery times may be longer.
Moreover, buying bulk diesel fuel provides more control over fuel prices. Since fuel prices can fluctuate frequently, businesses that purchase diesel in bulk can often lock in prices for a set period, protecting themselves from sudden price hikes.
Maximizing Fuel Efficiency with Bulk Diesel Fuel
While buying fuel in bulk can be cost-effective, achieving optimal fuel efficiency requires businesses to focus on several key factors. Here are some essential tips to help maximize the efficiency of bulk diesel fuel:
1. Proper Fuel Storage and Tank Maintenance
One of the most critical elements of maximizing fuel efficiency is ensuring that diesel fuel is stored correctly. Poor storage practices can lead to fuel contamination, which can reduce engine performance and fuel efficiency. Diesel fuel should be stored in clean, sealed tanks to prevent dirt, water, or other contaminants from entering the fuel. Over time, bacteria and algae can grow in the tank, which can cause fuel degradation.
Regular maintenance of fuel tanks and filtration systems is necessary to ensure clean, high-quality fuel is being used. A well-maintained tank will not only ensure better fuel performance but also reduce the risk of costly repairs to machinery and vehicles.
2. Implementing a Tank Monitoring System
One effective way to maximize the efficiency of bulk diesel fuel is by using a tank monitoring system. These systems provide real-time data on fuel levels, temperature, and quality, enabling businesses to track fuel consumption and identify any irregularities that might suggest issues such as leaks, evaporation, or contamination. By monitoring fuel usage closely, businesses can make adjustments to improve fuel efficiency, schedule timely refills, and ensure that the fuel is used effectively without waste.
Tank monitoring systems can also alert businesses when it’s time to perform maintenance or conduct fuel quality checks, helping prevent downtime and keep operations running smoothly.
3. Use of Fuel Additives
Fuel additives are substances that can be mixed with diesel fuel to improve its performance and efficiency. These additives can help clean the fuel system, reduce engine wear, and improve combustion. In cold weather, fuel additives can prevent gelling, ensuring that the fuel remains fluid and easy to pump. For businesses operating in colder climates or using older diesel engines, using additives may be a worthwhile investment to maintain optimal fuel efficiency.
In addition to improving engine performance, fuel additives can also help reduce emissions, making them an excellent choice for businesses looking to reduce their environmental impact.
4. Regular Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance
Maximizing fuel efficiency isn't just about the fuel itself—it's also about the condition of the equipment and vehicles using the fuel. Regular maintenance of engines, filters, and fuel injectors is crucial for keeping diesel-powered vehicles and machinery running at peak performance. Vehicles with clogged filters or inefficient fuel injectors may consume more fuel than necessary.
Implementing a regular maintenance schedule, including bulk oil supplier, air filter replacements, and fuel system cleaning, ensures that engines operate efficiently and use fuel effectively. Businesses should also monitor tire pressure, as under-inflated tires can increase rolling resistance, leading to higher fuel consumption.
5. Optimizing Driving Practices
For businesses with a fleet of vehicles, optimizing driving practices can lead to significant fuel savings. Fuel-efficient driving habits include reducing idling time, maintaining consistent speeds, and avoiding rapid acceleration and braking. Employees should be trained on how to drive in a way that minimizes fuel consumption, such as using cruise control on highways and planning routes to avoid traffic congestion.
Incorporating GPS tracking systems in vehicles can help businesses analyze driving patterns and identify areas where fuel consumption can be reduced. With data on vehicle speed, acceleration, and idle times, businesses can make adjustments to improve bulk fuel efficiency and lower operating costs.
6. Monitoring Fuel Consumption and Analyzing Usage
A key part of managing fuel efficiency is actively tracking and analyzing fuel consumption patterns. Businesses that rely on bulk diesel fuel can use fuel management software to monitor how much fuel is being used and where potential inefficiencies exist. By comparing fuel consumption across different vehicles or machines, businesses can identify any outliers and take corrective action, such as changing driving habits or performing maintenance on underperforming vehicles.
Fuel management systems can also help businesses predict fuel needs based on historical usage data, preventing both over- and under-ordering of fuel.
Managing Fuel Risks: Security and Contamination Prevention
Another important factor in maximizing bulk diesel fuel efficiency is managing fuel security. Diesel fuel is a valuable resource, and businesses should take measures to secure their fuel supply. This includes installing security systems around fuel tanks, using tamper-proof seals, and setting up protocols to prevent fuel theft.
Additionally, protecting fuel from contamination is essential for maintaining its quality and performance. Contaminated fuel can lead to clogged filters, engine failure, and reduced efficiency. A proactive approach to maintaining clean fuel storage tanks and regularly inspecting fuel quality can help businesses avoid these issues.
Environmental Considerations and Sustainability
Many businesses are now focusing on sustainability and reducing their environmental impact. Fuel efficiency plays a significant role in this effort. By using bulk diesel fuel efficiently, businesses can reduce the amount of fuel consumed, which in turn reduces emissions and helps meet environmental regulations. For businesses that are committed to sustainability, it’s also worth exploring alternatives to traditional diesel fuel, such as biodiesel, which can offer a more eco-friendly option without compromising performance.
Conclusion
For businesses that rely on diesel-powered equipment, maximizing fuel efficiency is crucial for reducing costs and improving operations. Bulk diesel fuel offers a cost-effective solution for businesses that need to fuel large fleets or machinery regularly. However, to fully capitalize on the savings that bulk diesel fuel can offer, businesses must implement best practices such as proper fuel storage, maintenance, regular monitoring, and efficient driving practices.
Incorporating a tank monitoring system and maintaining equipment to ensure it’s running efficiently can go a long way in helping businesses make the most of their bulk diesel fuel. By taking a comprehensive approach to fuel management, businesses can reduce their overall fuel consumption, cut costs, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

7 Signs Your Truck Needs Immediate Professional Repair
Every truck driver knows their rig is the backbone of their business. Ignoring problems puts schedules, cargo, and safety at risk. At JG Diesel Repairs and Towing, we believe recognizing early signs of trouble saves time, money, and stress. Here are seven warning signals that mean it’s time for immediate professional help.

Engines are complex, especially in trucks like Freightliner or Peterbilt. Unusual knocking, grinding, or squealing sounds often point to worn-out components or internal damage. Contact our Mobile Truck Repair Elk City service for on-the-spot diagnostics.

A truck’s braking system must work flawlessly to handle heavy loads. Spongy pedals, grinding noises, or longer stopping distances demand professional attention. Our repair team handles air brake systems for heavy-duty brands like Kenworth.
5. Decreased Fuel Efficiency
A sudden drop in mileage often means engine trouble, clogged filters, or misaligned wheels. Regular inspections ensure trucks operate efficiently, saving money on fuel costs.
6. Vibrations or Pulling While Driving
Feeling the steering wheel vibrate or the truck pulling in one direction could indicate alignment or tire issues. Ignoring these signs risks uneven wear and dangerous driving conditions.
