Authorities Tuesday, Oct. 27 were assessing and cleaning up damage caused by Monday’s high winds that wreaked havoc across Southern California, hitting the Inland Empire especially hard.
Whipping winds reached between 70 mph and 90 mph Monday and uprooted trees and power lines, toppled dozens of semi trucks on highways, sparked vegetation fires, and left thousands of residents and businesses without power.
In Riverside, a tree felled by strong winds toppled onto the Quail Creek Apartments at 3131 Arlington Ave. about 1 p.m. Monday, damaging 10 units and displacing 29 residents, Riverside Fire Department Captain Brian Guzzetta said Tuesday. He said officials at the Red Cross and the Riverside Emergency Operations Center were notified to assist the residents.
“We had numerous large trees around the city that fell. It was widespread throughout the city,” Guzzetta said. “Some of these trees landed on vehicles, homes, and some of them landed on apartment complexes.” He said there were no major injuries related to fallen trees.
“On top of that we had widespread power outages and interruptions due to power lines breaking and trees falling onto therm. Our public utilities are actively still continuing to repair and return services,” Guzzetta said. “We also responded to three wind-driven grass fires — all on the city’s west side.” He said there was no fire-related damage to any structures.

Strong winds knocked down tree limbs Monday, Oct. 26, 2020, that in turn broght down electrical wires on Whitsett Avenue just south of Sherman Way in North Hollywood. Gusts of up to 70 mph forced the temporary closure of runways at Ontario International Airport midday Monday, said airport spokesman Steve Lambert.
“They diverted a number of flights during that period that were coming in, and then others were delayed leaving,” Lambert said. He said the runways reopened about 1 p.m.
At Los Angeles International Airport, there were no disruptions to operations Monday. However, some ONT flights were diverted to LAX during its roughly 90-minute shutdown, said Olga Gallardo, a spokeswoman for the airport.
One gust in the San Gabriel Mountains on Monday was clocked at 96 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds remained strong Tuesday, leaving to continued outages in areas in Southern California.
Southern California Edison had shut off power to almost 19,000 customers as of noon. The most affected customers — 11,575 — were in San Bernardino County. Another 4,162 were in Riverside County, 1,750 were in Los Angeles County, 1,271 were in Orange County and 117 were in Ventura County. By 2 p.m., the number of Southern California customers without power was down to about 15,000.
Edison was estimating some of the affected customers could be without power until midday Wednesday.
San Bernardino County firefighters also responded to or assisted with hundreds of wind-related calls for service Monday including small fires ignited by downed and arcing power lines, numerous traffic accidents, and a vegetation fire in the unincorporated area of Muscoy, northwest of San Bernardino, agency spokeswoman Tracey Martinez said.
CHP officers responded Monday to dozens of calls of overturned tractor-trailers and other trucks on the 210, 15 and 10 freeways.
The Rancho Cucamonga CHP office reported 30 overturned trucks and tractor-trailers in its jurisdiction. Some of the toppled trucks and trailers remained on the sides of freeways until Tuesday, until they could be removed safely, Sgt. Ron Kurch said.
The most harrowing call came at 8:31 a.m. Monday, with a report of a semi truck that blew over in 70 mph winds on the transition from the northbound 15 to the westbound 10, landing atop a guardrail and teetering over the edge of the 15 Freeway, Kurch said.
“That was a particularly precarious one,” said Kurch. “We were able to get a heavy duty tow truck out there and secure the big rig, and the truck driver was not injured.”
Kurch said what happened Monday in his jurisdiction was anything but normal.
“I’ve been working in the Rancho Cucamonga area for over 10 years. Yesterday was definitely the most active wind event that I’ve experienced in my time in this area,” Kurch said Tuesday.
Firefighters and CHP officers reported no major wind-related incidents in Los Angeles and Orange counties, but there were fires and downed power lines.

The Silverado fire sparked Monday morning near Silverado Canyon in Orange County was being pushed by strong Santa Ana wind gusts.
The Blue Ridge fire, which ignited in Corona Monday afternoon and forced thousands to flee from their homes in Chino Hills and Yorba Linda, continued to be propelled by the winds.
Both fires continued to threaten homes Tuesday, even as winds began to slow, as firefighters worked to gain containment lines and protect structures. Thousands remained under evacuation orders Tuesday.
In LA County, saw toppled trees as winds whipped through.

“We’ve had a little starts here and there, bit nothing substantial,” said Sky Cornell, inspector for LA County Fire Department. “We’ve been pretty fortunate.”
In South Orange County, Officer Rafael Reynoso of CHP Capistrano office said the only noteworthy wind-related event to occur Monday was a tree that blew over onto the northbound 5 Freeway onramp at El Toro Road, forcing the closure of the onramp for about a half an hour until the tree was cleared away.

CALIFORNIA
18 Mar 2018 (Sun) – The campground has filled up for the weekend. There are many older campers here. There is some kind of musical campsites going on. We are seeing RVs move from one site to another site to another site. It looks like they stay in a space for one or two nights then move. One of them includes a camper that has no license plates on it. Paul supposed that these movers might be homeless and they get to stay free if they keep moving? What the heck. It’s an idea.
It was an errands day for us. We got fuel so the tank will be full for our move tomorrow. The clothes got washed and we picked up a few groceries. While in Vons, the lights went out. They came back on within a few seconds, but the computer system crashed and it took about ten minutes for the cash registers to come back on line. Just as things started moving, they lost power a second time. Again, the lights came right back on but the cash registers had to reboot. I think it took me over 45 minutes to get out of the store with my purchases. Paul ran back to the laundromat to get the clothes while I waited on line.
17 Mar 2018 (Sat) – It was raining when we got up this morning. We hemmed and hawed about going into San Diego because we wanted to tour the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The museum is almost entirely made up of different types of historic ships. We decided to pack the raincoats and just do it. We arrived a little before 11:00 a.m. Although it was overcast, it was not raining in San Diego.
There were two subs and six ships to explore. The subs were original – one Russian and one American. The American sub – USS Dophin – is the deepest diving submarine in the world and its deepest dive depth is still classified. The Russian sub – B-39 – was a diesel-electric submarine with a nuclear warhead. We were so very near nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis than we ever knew.
Other ships we explored included The Star of India (the oldest active sailing ship in the world), the San Salvador (a replica of Juan Cabrillo’s galleon), the HMS Surprise (a replica of a late 18th century Royal Navy frigate), the Californian (a tall ship of the state built in 1984), the Steam Ferry Berkeley (an 1898 steam ferry boat that operated for 60 years on the San Francisco Bay), and the Medea (a steam yacht built in 1904 for William Macalister Hall of Scotland). It was quite an eclectic collection and we enjoyed the tour immensely. We even took a 75-minute ride around the San Diego Bay on a swift river boat used in Vietnam. Two Navy veterans from the Vietnam War told stories of their time there. They made sure everyone got to put on a flak jacket and helmet and pose by the big gun in back. Additionally, they let the little kids take hold of the wheel and pretend to steer the boat. They sure got a thrill out of that!
After dropping more money in the parking meter, we walked across the street to the Claim Jumper Restaurant and had a delightful dinner sitting out on the patio. There were a few people dressed in quirky green outfits and hats for St. Patrick’s Day but nowhere near what we would have seen had we been in Boston or New York City. San Diego is very multicultural and comprised of very few Irish people. The restaurant didn’t even have a corned beef and cabbage special!
16 Mar 2018 (Fri) – We drove into San Diego to the U.S.S. Midway. The plan was to meet Sue & Bill there at 1:00 p.m. Since we arrived at a little after noon, we walked around the pier. A nearby park had a giant statue of a sailor kissing a nurse – the iconic symbol of the celebration of the end of WWII. Further along were life size statues of Bob Hope and an audience of military personnel. A 20-minute recording from one of Bob Hope’s USO shows was playing over a sound system.
Sue & Bill finally arrived and we toured the now retired aircraft carrier. Paul and I had been on the ship when we were in San Diego about two years ago. It was still very interesting.
After the ship, we walked back to the truck to put more money in the parking meter then walked into town to a restaurant called Tender Greens for a late lunch/early dinner. It was a vegetarian friendly eatery with excellent food. We then walked back to our cars and drove to Coronado to a movie theater where we watched “Red Sparrow.” It was an interesting movie.
15 Mar 2018 (Thu) – We drove to the Hotel Del Coronado this morning. It was built in 1888 as a destination resort. In 1977, the hotel was declared a National Historic Landmark. The place was huge! We wandered about the place, walked in and out of shops, peeked into ballrooms, and strolled around the pool. The beachfront was right outside the hotel where many people were walking up and down the beach. There was a jetty made out of the biggest rocks I have ever seen. At noon, we went to the Shearwater Restaurant and had lunch on the outdoor patio with heaters going around all the tables. It was a little cool with the breeze blowing in off the ocean but the sun was shining and that made it warm.
After dropping $100 for lunch (ouch!), we drove to the SDCCU Stadium for their big RV show. There were many RVs to see and we wandered in and out of all kinds of campers and motor coaches. It was an enjoyable afternoon. On the way home, we stopped at the grocery store and picked up some food items. The babies were happy to see us return.
14 Mar 2018 (Wed) – We packed up and left Oceanside at 11:00 a.m. An hour later we pulled into the Sweetwater Summit Regional RV Park in Bonita, south of San Diego. They have 150 campsites in two loops. We are in the north loop. It is older than the south loop. There are trees and bushes at each site. It is most popular in the summer because the shrubbery keeps it site cooler than the south loop, which is on a hill without any trees.
We pulled into our campsite and discovered that we only have electric and water. Well, that’s OK since we’re only staying five nights. The first stop was no good because the RV was too close to tree branches. We pulled forward a little and found that the steps came right down into a concrete picnic table. Pulling further forward, we were able to get beyond all obstructions. After letting the autolevel function work, we discovered the front level was off the ground, as well as the tires on the driver’s side. We then hooked the truck up again, raised the front legs, and put blocks under them. The tires were still off the ground so Paul pushed some blocks under them. It took us about an hour to get everything adjusted and acceptable.
During that time, I went to move the dog and she wasn’t there. The dog and leash were gone. Apparently, when Paul hooked Bonnie up the outside leash, he did not make sure the end was hooked in. Bonnie got to go off on a walk-about. We found her three campsites away, sniffing away at somebody’s discarded foodstuff in a barbecue. Hopefully, she didn’t eat anything.
13 Mar 2018 (Tue) – Paul and I went to the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad this morning. There were lots of priceless instruments among their collection. They had pianos from the turn of the 20th century, and several Steinways (Z. Steinway was a member of the founding board). They even had the piano that was being played at Ford Theater when President Lincoln was shot. There was a historical progression of instruments and music genres that was so interesting. A whole section was devoted to the harp guitar; an unusual looking guitar with another neck and floating strings like on a harp. It is a very strange looking instrument.
After the museum, we drove to Encinitas to meet Susan at the Lotus Café for lunch. Then we drove back to Carlsbad where the three of us toured the Gemological Institute of America. A guide walked us around the facility describing many of the exhibits on display. Security was heavy – we had to show photo ID at the entrance gate and again at the reception desk. The diamonds, gems, crystals, and rocks were stunning. There was a special exhibit of Indian Jewelry that was exquisite.
When we were done, we drove back to Encinitas where we picked up Bill and went to dinner at the Goodonya. It is an Australian restaurant that serves organic food. The meal was very good.
12 Mar 2018 (Mon) – We drove into Temecula today. Temecula is well known for its wineries and breweries. It is beautiful countryside with vineyard after vineyard after vineyard. There are so many that some even share a driveway. You drive in and turn left for one winery or turn right for another winery. First we walked around Old Towne Temecula. Parts of the sidewalk were board. There were many shops and restaurants – typical for these kinds of places. We stopped at the Public House for lunch. I picked up a Christmas ornament from Temecula. Then we drove to the wineries for a tasting.
There is a kind of double route that winds through the hills and past all the wineries. We stopped at two. I bought one bottle of wine at each place. Then we drove back to our RV.
11 Mar 2018 (Sun) – We drove to Encinitas today to meet Susan and Bill. They flew out from New York yesterday and will be staying in California for three weeks. Their air bnb house is close to their spiritual center where they attend service and participate in meditation exercises. We walked into town and had lunch at the Lotus Café. After lunch, we walked over to the Self Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens. The plantings were beautiful and walking among the trees and plants was very surreal. There were monster size koi in the ponds.
After touring the gardens, we walked back to Sue & Bill’s rental and sat for a couple of hours talking. Then we walked into town again to the Lotus Café for smoothies and such. When done, we walked back to the rental, said our goodbyes, and returned to the campground. The skies cleared up and the day turned out to be lovely.
10 Mar 2018 (Sat) – We packed up and left Seal Beach at 10:30, heading out to Oceanside. There was the usual California traffic so it took us twice as long to reach our destination. We are camped at an Elks Lodge. This one is so much larger than most other lodges. There are about 30 trailers here; some look like they’ve been here quite a long time. First, we were assigned to site 18 but there were a water hose, electric cable, and ramps in the site. That usually means the person who was there is coming back. The assistant host was perplexed but discovered that there are two Thomases staying here. So we were assigned to site 13 but there was stuff there, too. That rig was also coming back. We walked around and chose site 9, between two motor coaches. We had reserved a 30 amp site for $28 a night. This site has a 50 amp hook up (which costs $32 a night). The assistant camp host was so embarrassed by all the mistakes that he told us we could stay in the site at the lower cost.
It rained on and off all day. By the time I walked Bonnie tonight, everything was muddy and we were sidestepping puddles. My sister, Susan, and her husband have flown out to Encinitas for three weeks. We made arrangements to meet for lunch tomorrow. I think it’s pretty funny that two people from New York meet up in California for lunch.
9 Mar 2018 (Fri) – We had a number of errands to run today. We got fuel for the truck and propane for the RV, bought groceries, and mailed off cards at the post office. There was a quick stop at the Mediterranean Grill for lunch. After we got back to the campground, we washed the truck and did the laundry. Sheba and Bonnie enjoyed some play time in the bright sunshine.
8 Mar 2018 (Thu) – We worked around the camper this morning then drove to Santa Monica Pier for lunch. It was a long, wooden pier that extended out into the water with fishing stations and street performers playing music or doing sleight of hand. A man was feeding the pigeons and invited passersby to feed them, too. They landed on my head and shoulders, fighting to get the food. A small amusement park was on the end of the pier. There were many people walking onto and off the pier. We ate at a restaurant at the end of the pier. Outside there was a bulletin board that recounted the history of the pier. It started out as a concrete conduit that was used to dump wastewater into the ocean. Over the years, it was built out further into the water and various stalls and attractions came and went. After lunch, we walked along the beach in our bare feet. The water was ice cold but there were still a few brave souls splashing around in it including one very bare lady.
At 3:00 p.m., we drove back to the campground to get ready for dinner with my cousin, Dana, and his wife, Tammy. What should have taken 40 minutes took us an hour and a half to drive. We got back to the campground around 5:00 p.m. We walked Bonnie, fed the animals, and climbed in the truck to drive to Riverside. It was, unfortunately, rush hour. We crawled along the freeways and expressways. Again, it took three times as long to drive to our destination.
When we got to Dana’s house, we were introduced to Tammy’s sister, who was visiting from Michigan. They also had a dog they adopted two weeks ago. It was a beautiful white dog with a delightful temperament, about 50 pounds. Tammy thought it was a white German shepherd; we thought it might be a husky. They had sent off a DNA sample and are waiting for the results.
Dana cooked a delicious dinner of chicken, green beans, corn on the cob, cowboy beans, and garlic toast. We had a wonderful evening visiting with them.
7 Mar 2018 (Wed) – We went to Universal Studios Hollywood today. We thought we’d been there before but we were wrong. As a result, we got to enjoy a brand new amusement park. Parking was tough. We had to park in the oversize garage then walk a mile to the entrance. First was a search of our back pack then passage through a metal detector. They took my pocket knife away. Disney let me in three times but Universal confiscated it.
There were several roller coaster type rides. We enjoyed most of them although I thought I was going to get sick on the Harry Potter ride. The 3D rides were the hardest on me. As we were leaving, we got tagged to do a survey on our experience in the park.
On the way back, the traffic was heavy - ten lanes of bumper-to-bumper cars and trucks. It seemed to take forever to get back. We stopped at WalMart to return an item I bought yesterday and to buy some correction tape. Then we got back in the truck and drove another half hour home to arrive at 7:30 p.m. Sheba came bolting out the door as soon as we opened it. It was dark and I was worried about coyotes in the area. We managed to get her back in the RV fairly quickly.
6 Mar 2018 (Tue) – Paul continues to feel better. We went to Disneyland today. Of the three days we have been there, today was, by far, the busiest. We had to park way in back of the lot. When we got into the park, we stayed on the opposite side from where we were last week. We knew we were all Disneyed out when we realized that we didn’t take one single picture today.
After Disney, we stopped by a memorial to submariners of WWII. It was small but impressive. There was a plaque for each of the 52 submarines lost with the names of the crews listed.
Since the day was still young, we drove to WalMart and got the oil changed on the truck. While it was being serviced, we thought we would see a movie but there was nothing playing that fit our time frame so we skipped it. Instead, we had cocktails and a snack at T.G.I.F. Then we went back to WalMart, did some shopping, picked up the truck, and drove back to the campground.
I spent all day trying to call the next campground in San Diego. No one ever called me back or answered the phone. I hope someone will be there tomorrow.
5 Mar 2018 (Mon) – Paul was still feeling crappy but he thinks the virus is moving on. His sinus is clear but his throat is sore now. We went to the harbor for lunch at the Ballast Point Brewery. The day was lovely and we sat out on the deck next to the waterway.
4 Mar 2018 (Sun) – Paul was all congested today. We were going to my cousin’s for a barbecue today but had to cancel because he was not feeling well and I didn’t want to get anyone else sick. We just stayed around the camper all day. I did the laundry.
3 Mar 2018 (Sat) – We went to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum this morning. The story of his life and career was well told and I have a better understanding of what happened with the Watergate affair. He must be laughing his butt off just looking at what’s going on in Washington, D.C. these days. How does 3 minutes of missing taped conversation compare to 32,000 missing emails? I hope someone pursues criminal action against Hillary Clinton. The childhood home of Richard Nixon and the presidential helicopter were both closed today because of rain. It sprinkled on and off all day and the sky remained overcast with dark clouds. I guess they were afraid wet shoes would track in the house. Too bad.
After the library, we stopped at a local restaurant – Stefano’s Golden Baked Hams. Sounds weird but it was a café with delicious sandwiches, paninis, and salads. We then went food shopping. The prices here in California are exorbitant and our bill was much higher than we usually pay for groceries. Paul started feeling sick so we returned home. He has apparently picked up a virus somewhere (probably at Disneyland) and is now coughing and sniffling. Ugh.
2 Mar 2018 (Fri) – We went to Denny’s for breakfast this morning. Figured we’d save a little money by eating outside the park. It was good. Then we drove to Disneyland and spent the day in California Adventure. It rained a little this morning so most of the day was overcast and cool. There were crowds at the really popular rides but most had 5 to 10 minute wait times. We saw an hour long Broadway production of “Frozen.” The Tower of Terror has been redone into Guardians of the Galaxy but the ride was the same – an elevator that pitches you up and down for several minutes.
We stopped at KFC to pick up dinner and pulled into the campground just as it started raining again. Paul ran back out to pick up propane.
1 Mar 2018 (Thu) – We went to the Aquarium of the Pacific today. There were scores of school children there so the place was noisy and crowded. At least this place is educational – not like Disneyland. When we walked out and strolled down the boardwalk, a tour company was announcing the departure of a boat for a 45 minute tour of Rainbow Harbor. We quickly bought tickets, boarded the boat, and climbed the stairs to the top deck. The sun was shining and the breeze wasn’t too cold so we were able to stay on top and thoroughly enjoy the ride around the harbor.
There were about 20 ships sitting out in the harbor waiting to berth to either load or unload a shipment. There were tankers for oil and container ships looking to pile on hundreds of CONEXes. Four man-made islands dotted the harbor. They were oil derricks pumping oil. The two closest to the shore have been camouflaged to look like resorts. The residents complained that they did not want to look out on oil derricks so the company collaborated with Disney to create their disguise. It works because we did think the derrick was a hotel.
When the boat returned to the dock, we walked across the street and had lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. It is amazing to think that it was a movie that caused a restaurant chain to form.
After lunch, we drove to the Queen Mary. The ship has been converted into a hotel with restaurants and shops. We were pressed for time so took a self-guided tour of the engine room and a display about Winston Churchill and Princess Diana. The inner workings of the former steamship were impressive. We even stopped in the forward lounge and had a cocktail, looking out at the skyline of Long Beach.
We returned to the RV, changed, fed the animals, then went to the house of friends who live in Long Beach. Jim & Lida were on the Maritimes caravan with us in 2016. We had a delightful evening together.
28 Feb 2018 (Wed) – We went to Disneyland today. We left a little after 8:30 a.m. After a very frustrating time trying to find parking for our big ass truck, we found a lot and caught a shuttle to Disney. There were loads of people flowing into the park. We asked an employee why there were so many people (isn’t this supposed to be their off season?), and he told us they never have any downtime any more. The schools in the area were bringing their sixth grade classes in today and tomorrow. I sure wish my school had taken us on a class trip like this!
We went on half the rides in Disneyland. Another trip will see us go on the other half and the third day we’ll go to the California Adventure Park (the other half of Disney).
We left the park at 4 p.m. and stopped at Old World Dominion. It is a recreated Germany community. It was really a collection of 40 some shops and restaurants in buildings decorated to look like old Germany. Almost all of the shops were closed. We stopped in a restaurant and had dinner. It was very good.
27 Feb 2018 (Tue) – We went for a walk along the beach before pulling out this morning. There were dolphins swimming just off the beach and the harbor seals were laying out on the estuary side during low tide. We stood for a while and watched the plovers running back and forth with the lapping waves on the beach and the pelicans diving for fish.
We finished packing up and left Point Mugu Naval Base at 11:00 a.m. Since we were only moving 70 miles south, we left later than usual. The drive was fine until we came into L.A. Then traffic ground to a halt. It was 12 lanes of bumper-to-bumper cars, trucks, and motorcycles. What should have taken us a little more of an hour to drive took two and a half hours. Ugh.
We arrived at Seabreeze RV Park on a Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach. Although we have been here before, neither one of us remembers much about it. The check-in office was somewhat familiar, but that was it. It is a nice campground. There are rows of campsites roomy enough to fit our RV and truck and extend the awning without hanging over the next guy’s site. There are many ground squirrels running around, too. Again, Sheba will have to be restricted so she doesn’t chase them.
After we got set up, we decided to stay longer than originally planned. We checked in for four nights but will be extending it. The ITT Office used to be inside the RV Office but it has since moved. We walked two blocks over and bought tickets for Disneyland, Universal Studios, and the Aquarium of the Pacific. We were only going to spend two days at Disney, but the Military Salute tickets were three days and cost less than a two day ticket. So, we bought the three day tickets. Even if we don’t use the full three days (oh, heaven forbid!), we’ll still have spent less than if we had gotten the two day tickets.
26 Feb 2018 (Mon) – We drove into Port Hueneme today intending to explore the Channel Islands. There was a visitor center down by the harbor with a small display of local wildlife, fauna and flora. There are 8 islands in the channel; 5 are protected by the Channel Islands National Park. There are over 2,000 species that call the Channel Islands their home; many specific to this area. The island fox can only be found on six of the islands – nowhere else in the world. There is no regular ferry to the islands. You can pay a tour company to take you over to Santa Cruz, the biggest and most popular island.
We drove into town and had lunch at a place called BGs Café. It was a kind of American-Mexican fare. Both types of food were offered in abundance. Our meal was delicious.
Next stop was at the Seabee Museum on Navy Base Ventura County (Port Whoneedsme). The museum was very thorough in describing the formation and history of the Construction Battalion in the Navy. It was quite an impressive story.
25 Feb 2018 (Sun) – We started out headed to a museum but found out it was closed on Sundays. I called up the Gas Buddy app and found a place that sold diesel gas at the lowest price in the area. It turned out to be on the Navy Base in Port Hueneme. During text messages with friends in Florida, it turned out he served there many years ago. The sailors stationed there call the base Port Whoneedsme. I love military folks! They have such a weird sense of humor.
We had a bit of excitement when we got to the base. There were MPs, police, sheriff, and fire personnel at the main gate with lights flashing and guns drawn. The entrance was closed and cars were being turned away. We did a U-turn and found another gate to enter. The MP at the next gate told us to avoid the NEX where we were headed because all the guns were pointed in toward the base. So we went to the club on the golf course and had lunch.
After lunch, we headed over to the NEX. The fire truck and most of the flashing cars were gone so we pulled into the gas station and fueled up. We wanted to go to the Seabee Museum but it was also closed on Sundays. Not having much luck today.
So we drove into the Santa Monica Mountains. The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area was added to the National Park System in 1978. This is the only mountain range that runs east-west all the way down into the Pacific Ocean. All other mountain ranges in North America run north-south. Mulholland Drive is a famous scenic highway that used to be the primary route from LA to the beach. It is a winding, curvy road that winds through the mountains. We came upon the King Gillette Ranch (which housed the Santa Monica visitor center). We stopped at the center for information then hiked around the property. The house was originally built by the found of Gillette Razors, was bought by a movie director who added a tennis court, a pool and an air strip, then passed through several owners before being given to the state. The house was not open to the general public.
The next stop in the cruise through the mountains was at Paramount Ranch Western Town. This is an area with a town façade simulating a western town that Paramount Studios uses to film TV shows and movies. MASH, Quinn Medicine Woman, X Files, The Mentalist, and Hulu’s Quickdraw were filmed there. Some of the movies shot there included Bob Hope in “Caught in the Draft,” and Sandra Bullock in “The Lake House.”
24 Feb 2018 (Sat) – We took it easy today. I spent most of the day working on the family genealogy records. Paul finished carving his diamond willow stick we picked up in Destruction Bay in the Yukon during our Alaska trip back in 2015.
In the afternoon, we drove into town to pick up a few groceries. We stopped at TGI Friday’s to have lunch (never go food shopping when you’re hungry) then into WalMart to get pet food and a few other items.
23 Feb 2018 (Fri) – We pulled out of Vandenberg AFB FamCamp at 9:30 a.m. The route took us along U.S. 101 and California Route 1, following the Pacific coast for a good deal of the ride. The views were phenomenal! The ride was easy and we arrived two and a half hours later.
I checked in at the Point Mugu NAS Campground in Oxnard when we arrived. The desk clerk showed me which spaces were open and I chose 111. It turned out that we couldn’t fit in the space so I had to go back and ask for a different campsite. We got 109 which was a little longer but had more maneuver room than the last space had. The campground is right on the beach next to a protected estuary. While walking Bonnie, we saw harbor seals sleeping on the sand, pelicans diving into the water, and little plovers running back and forth with the waves. The sound of the ocean washing up on the shore is such a soothing sound.
22 Feb 2018 (Thu) – We woke at 5:30 a.m. and hurried down to the launch area. There were many cars driving in that direction. We were all parked on the side roads and parking lots. The launch was pretty quiet and without much smoke – not like all those rocket launches we have watched in films. In fact, Paul and I were talking and didn’t hear the rocket take off. I happened to catch the bright light rising into the sky. There were three boosters that let go and were returning to earth. They did not have the boosters automatically return to the pad for this launch. The payload was a communications satellite for Spain.
We returned to the RV and fed the animals, gave Bonnie a quick walk, then were on the road by 7:00 a.m. I compared our temperature of 37 to what it is back in New York – 48. How can California be colder than New York???
We arrived at Hearst Castle in San Simeon at 8:50 a.m. We were able to get tickets for the 9:00 a.m. tour. We bought the tickets, then boarded a bus for a winding ride up the mountain to the castle. The building is on top of the highest peak in the area with a commanding view of the surrounding area. Hearst always referred to it as his ranch, not a castle. After he passed away in 1951, his family gave the estate and thousands of acres to the state. They also gave an easement to the ocean so that nothing could ever be built there. His five sons wanted the place to always look like it did when their father lived there. I was somewhat annoyed with the state. There was a charge to see the big rooms, a charge to see the kitchen and upper rooms, a charge to see the cottages, and another fee if you wanted to come back and see the castle at night. I felt they were nickel and diming the tourists. Why couldn’t they offer a complete tour for one complete price? We stopped by the snack bar but I was put off by the cost of the food ($7 for a slice of pizza; $5 for French fries). We left and drove down the hill where we found Sebastian’s Café. We had lunch there. The food was very good and the portions were large. I brought half my sandwich home for dinner.
When we were done eating, we drove four miles down the road to see the elephant seals on the beach. January to February is their mating season. All the seals were sleeping on the beach. An occasional pup was trying to get mom to move so it could get some milk but otherwise, it looked like they were all just dead carcasses. The wind was blowing hard and cold so we didn’t stay long.
21 Feb 2018 (Wed) – We went to Solvang today. The town was about an hour away. It was founded in 1911 by three immigrants from Denmark who wanted to set up a school similar to the schools in their country. It was a very quaint town with windmills and decorative bric-a-brac on buildings. We walked around the town after a brief stop in the visitor’s center. The Red Viking Restaurant provided an enjoyable lunch. I got a four sandwich sampler (I couldn’t eat all of it) and Paul had a sausage and meatball combo dish. Then we ordered Ableskivers (pronounced ABEL-SKEEVERS). It was a round pancake with raspberry compote. Quite tasty and unique.
We stopped to look at Chuchuma Lake State Park campground on the way back. A lynx walked right out and across the road in front of us, totally unaffected by our being there. It walked down to the lake.
We got back, fed the animals, walked Bonnie, then headed to the beach to watch the sunset. When we got there, we noticed a launch pad in the distance. Exploration on the internet led to a delightful discovery: the Space-X launch of a Falcon 9 rocket had been scheduled for this morning but due to high winds, was rescheduled for tomorrow morning at 6:17 a.m. We will have to be sure to set the alarm. In the meantime, we walked out on the beach and watched the sunset on the Pacific Ocean. There was an oil rig way out in the distance, barely visible on the horizon. The wind was blowing hard and cold. I had a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, and a jacket on and I was still cold.
20 Feb 2018 (Tue) – We left Barstow at 8:15 a.m. The weather was much nicer today although the temperatures are still cold. It was a six hour drive (much longer than we like to do) to Lompoc. We stopped after two hours for lunch then continued on to Vandenberg AFB FamCamp. The geography was lovely. We drove through mountains and hillsides; over rivers with no water and dry creek beds.
The campground is deep on the base. There is a parking lot with sites around the perimeter and then a long line of pull through sites. We are in a pull through site. We have full hook up. There are ground squirrels everywhere. We will not be able to let Sheba out because she will go after the little critters.
19 Feb 2018 (Mon-President’s Day) – We pulled up stakes and left Las Vegas this morning. There was a storm blowing in a cutting, very cold wind. We both had to put on our jackets and gloves. There was buffeting by the wind during our four hour drive to Barstow. We are staying on the Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB). There are two rows of sites that campers back into. We have full hookup but no wifi. Because the weather was so bad, we did not let Sheba out and Bonnie got very short walks.
After set up, we drove back down the road to Calico Ghost Town, just off I-40. It was an old mining town formed in 1881. Calico was booming for three years then the mine played out. During its heyday it was the largest silver mine in California. Population peaked at 1,200 in 1887 then declined until there are only two people living there today. Visitors stroll along wooden boardwalks in front of old wooden and mud buildings. They seemed to nickel and dime you to death – it was $8 to get in, $3 to tour a fun house, $3 to walk through a silver mine, and more to ride a train. We had lunch in a restaurant that was also pricey but the food was good. The cold wind made walking miserable. We ducked into the many, many gift shops just to get warm. The place felt pretty hokey and cheap. I think that’s what happens to you when you travel everywhere like we do. You get jaded. Everyone around us seemed to be enjoying the town very much. Oh, well.

The Pain of Furnace Explosion
The Upside to Furnace Explosion
UNLESS… You’re discussing a boiler. A well-designed furnace doesn’t necessarily indicate it’s going to be expensive to build, or that it’s complicated to construct and operate. An adjacent furnace wasn’t involved. If your gas furnace isn’t producing sufficient heat you might need to engage the services of a furnace contractor to repair it especially if it is a significant issue. If you’re not getting enough heat you may have a burner port that’s blocked with dirt.
New Step by Step Roadmap for Furnace Explosion
Many situations the explosions will make a hole in the ground about the magnitude of a truck tire. The reason for the explosion and fire isn’t yet known. In some instances, the initial explosion might cause modest flames due to burning oil droplets. Furnace explosions are rather rare, he explained. Can be broken into two chief sources for the explosion, one particular blast furnace, the other is the furnace explosion. The reason for the blast wasn’t immediately known.
Furnace Explosion: the Ultimate Convenience!
Due to stresses connected with boiler expansion, expanded metal needs to be set in the center of the refractory to provide the optimum support (Figure 17). The cause hasn’t been determined. In case the problem has to do with the pilot light not working or it doesn’t stay lit then you should wash the orifice employing a toothpick. If you think that the issue isn’t that serious you can attempt to identify it yourself and see whether it’s possible to fix it before calling in furnace repair San Diego. There are lots of issues with the web, but among the gifts especially on private, secure, moderated forums is the fact that it supplies a safe arena where people are able to start to inform their stories.

How did we get here
these past few weeks I have cried everyday. I like most people believed that the Corona Virus was a problem that would not reach the US. Then it did. So fear started to creep in. Then words of it's only in big cities and it's not that many. Then Italy happened. Then New York and whispers of San Diego. Surely a small valley like ours would not get it. Then rumors of a first case, we all took a collective breath when we found out it was negative. So things are normal. City's like New York and Los Angeles however they were slowly starting to get more cases. Within the week we had our first confirmed two cases. Then Italy gets even worse, the stories are bad and they go into quarantine. We are up to four cases now. My sister decides to go out and buy basic necessities and food. Smart move because just the next day people start to panic buy. Toilet paper is bought in droves. We are not yet aware of just how bad it will get. Then we begin to see the warnings on Twitter from the people in Italy pleading for us to not take this lightly. WE DON'T LISTEN.
We are now up to seven cases. People are relearning to wash their hands and cover their mouths when they sneeze. Then seemingly overnight the Gov of California starts to restrict certain things. Then the next day we are asked to stay home and if you have symptoms self quarantine. It affects older people they said so we need to take care of them. Then we jump to 17 cases and people start to panic buy worse. We order necessities online and avoid stores. Then shit hits the fans. Younger people are dying. We are in danger. I'm in danger with previous bouts of Pneumonia and Bronchitis. As well as pre diabetes. I'm cautious we are up to 20 cases by now.
Then we learn that hospitals are running out of face masks, gloves, gowns and protective shields. They refuse some components of their PPE all to keep saving lives. Are at about 30 cases now. California is on quarantine. I work for IHSS, my husband is a truck driver and my sister in food service, we are essential workers. So we keep working. People are not listening and are still going out. Days are starting to bleed into each other. The number of cases jumps up everyday.
Things get bad and I have started to cry everyday for the last couple of weeks. I cry because I'm angry, frustrated, scared and I'm feeling a sense of helplessness. The elderly couple I work for are not taking it seriously. I can't say no to taking them to stores or walking them sense the gov of California did not prohibit that. They want to walk and go shop everyday. No one is listening. I worry that because of them I will be exposed to the Virus and bring it home to my sister and parents.
It is April 4th 2020 and cases in our small valley have gone up to 55 with one death and 9 yet to be confirmed. I have cried everyday for the last couple of weeks.

Moving marketplace Dolly’s future in its home state hangs on critical regulatory hearing
In Wednesday’s hearing, Washington attorneys claimed photos like this mislead customers by suggesting Dolly is a moving company. (Dolly Photo)
Dolly, the app that connects people with trucks to people who need help moving, faces an uncertain future in the state where it got its start.
Dolly CEO Mike Howell. (Dolly Photo)
Washington state regulators ordered Dolly to cease operations back in March, ruling that the company was a “household goods carrier,” operating without the proper license and requirements.
Dolly applied for that license and continue operating in Washington. The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission said it planned to deny the application so representatives from Dolly headed to Olympia, Wash. to plead their case before the commission Wednesday.
Dolly is seeking a household goods carrier permit with some exceptions because the company isn’t a traditional mover. From Dolly’s perspective, it simply provides the underlying technology, insurance, and background checks to connect movers and helpers. It’s a familiar argument that other gig economy services, like Uber and Postmates have made.
Because Dolly doesn’t own moving trucks or employ movers, parts of the permit do not apply. Dolly isn’t able to obtain U.S. Department of Transporation Number, for example.
“Dolly is certainly not alone,” said Dolly CEO Mike Howell during Wednesday’s hearing. Amazon and Lugg and Pickup and others provide the same set of services we do.”
Dolly is working with the Washington state legislature to pass a bill regulating gig economy companies.
“Obviously, this is an extremely frustrating position to be in given all the work we’ve done with the WUTC going back to the bill we introduced with their support in the last legislative session,” Howell said before the hearing.
A key focus of the hearing was whether Dolly complied with the cease and desist order. Armikka Bryant, Dolly’s legal chief, claimed that the company believed the order only applied to advertising and marketing in Washington state.
“Dolly genuinely believed that the cease and desist order applied to specific messaging in its internet marketing,” he said.
Jeff Roberson, an assistant attorney general for Washington, argued that Dolly did not take meaningful action to communicate that it isn’t a moving company to customers in the state.
“Their conduct over the last six, seven months has been inherently a challenge to the commission’s authority,” Roberson said during the hearing. “The commission repeatedly told Dolly to cease and desist.”
Dolly operates in Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston. The company isn’t saying whether it will continue to operate in Washington if its provisional permit is denied. But Howell said the company “will continue to work with the WUTC and State Congress to create the right environment that allows for a service that consumers so obviously need.”
The commission has 60 days to issue its final order.
