I've already spoke in length about Orym's self-sacrificial tendencies in my 'Orym is a rabbit' post, but don't think I've forgotten about Miss Horse Girl giving Iphigenia vibes over here I just have some concerns about Imogen, whether willingly or forced, becoming a vessel for Predathos (you know, the same entity that Orym tried to comprehend for a single heartbeat and began screaming uncontrollably, had to be cradled like an infant by the Wildmother while he sobbed, and now something inside of him is irreversibly broken). Like I just think that letting an eldritch monster of hunger and oblivion possess you is maybe not a great idea?

We need to address something I don't see coming up enough in the fanon vs canon conversation about Jason vs Dick being tim's Robin. We talk about how the size of the hero worship for Dick, the victim blaming, how Jason was like this shadow/threat looming over tim, how everyone starting with Bruce and Alfred disrespected his memory to use as a cautionary tale so the image tim had of Jason wasn't accurate, and again the amount of victim blaming that was so fucked up, and how there was also this idea that this is still a dead child which implies some very martyrish form of "well you have to honour his legacy and aim to be as good as him and save the people he cared about because he's fucking dead" and I think that that canon fucked up parasocial relationship between tim and Jason has the potential to be so interesting (they deserved so much more than the titan tower fight for real it could have been fascinating exploring that). All of this can be interesting and it can be deep and angsty and so good.

But!

But.

Hear me out:

The real thing that's missing from this discourse, once we've acknowledged the worth and reality of canon, is that (even without the very woopified emo tim representation), fanfics about how Jason was tim's hero and tim's Robin would send early Robin tim, at least, into such a rage. I'm not saying there's no nuance or he just hates Jason and nothing else. But some versions of early tim specifically I think would feel such a deep rage at the implication that Jaybin was his favourite Robin and he only loved and idolized him, and I think that version of tim at least deserves it. Like, if I could make him read all of these fanfics and he has to and can't zone out I would do it, make it a lesson about victim-blaming (also the misogyny in some runs). Like isn't it nice to imagine? I think it's deeply funny, and I understand some people get upset about it because like they feel canon is more interesting but, if it's in fanfic, I think it's hilarious. I think we should just submit characters who do stuff that piss us off to that actually, write things about them that would infuriate them. Oh Jason taunts and laughs about the possibility of Dick dying in Chemo ? Fuck you, now you're scared and on the run from your family because they're crime lord killers and killing is bad and you're a soft boy who drinks honey lavender lattes. tim victim-blames Robin? Bam, you have hero worship now. Batman is always the center of the narrative and comics and it's always about him to the point it's really annoying and downplays the potential of other characters? Say goodbye to your dialogue lines buddy, you get one hug at the end if i'm feeling generous. Nobody is free from the magic wand of doom and the power of "it would be so fucking funny". This power is driving me insane. Let it consume you in the name of catharsis.

But they are so willing to fall into slurs and homophobia and misogyny whenever they can utilize it to tear down characters they think get in the way of their ship.

it's the same scene except: - Bulma's actively at work being a scientist - Vegeta's not being rude to her (or anyone else!) - Vegeta waits for Trunks instead of leaving the room - Cell interrupted the airwaves, which means Trunks and Vegeta were just hanging out with Bulma and Dr B while they were working

Those are all Great Character Details!! That the anime rails against!!

So lets get started: So you might say that choosing a singular character out of this wonderfully written cast with such diverse background, realistic motivations and fantastic writing would be hard well, let me say this....

It's midori and it's not even close. I have never hated somebody has much as him. I Fucking despise him from the bottom of my being, he is the worst asshole know to human kind, i hate everything about him. I hate every single of his ships, especially s**shin (won't even say it out loud this ship gives me trauma). He is a pathetic, narcissistic, man child, who can't accept no, who only feel in power when somebody is under him, he's egocentric, sociopath, abusive, like REALLY ABUSIVE, and the definition of a groomer.

To every stupid ass s**shin shipper who claims that shin was not abused that bad and that we exaggerate, guys shin was STILL abused, stop being delusional. How do you think in GODS NAME, does a guy who i precise is know to like breaking people apart and ruining their life for fun would even works with an impressionable teen. Also, yes it is a proship.

And yes compared to them i have media literacy, sou is clearly in love with shin, and there is possibility that shin maybe( i hope not) had feelings for him. Me when I replay a Jak game and return to tumblr to ramble about my thoughts:

I just wanna talk about how Jak never gets his personal goals met in ANY of the main trilogy.

In both Jak 2 and 3, there are two villains: one who has personally hurt Jak, and one who is generally the Big Bad who wants to destroy the world.

Jak 2 has Praxis, a very good villain who literally tortured Jak for years. Jak’s main goal in that game is to kill Praxis. There is no other motivation at the beginning, just...”Murder Praxis.”

But Jak never gets a chance. Instead, Kor ends up killing Praxis and Jak has to go save the world, again, even though that was not what he wanted to do.

Jak 3 has Veger and Cyber Errol. Veger has literally torn Jak away from his family, and we never get to see him get any of his just desserts. Seriously, he gets turned into an ottsel?? That’s the punishment for the Dolores Umbridge of the series? 

In The Precursor Legacy, Jak’s entire goal is to turn Daxter back into a human. He gets caught up saving the world and succeeds, but Daxter stays an ottsel.

even though the sages could have, at any time, made more light eco, but the world isn’t ready for that conversation

All of this to say: the JND series is all about sacrifice: the idea that sacrificing your own wants for the needs of those around you is sometimes required.

And it’s bullshit, because Jak and Daxter are the only ones who ever have to do it.

Some character designs I created for my uni course last year as part of a “trope smashing” brief! I really enjoyed how these guys turned out - I see them as a private investigative pair in a fantasy victorian-esque setting, with perhaps some sci-fi elements. And yes, they’re husbands.
