Dr. Jordan B. Peterson speaks with former-Scientologist and podcaster Aaron Smith-Levin. They explore his upbringing within the “church,” how Scientology entices new members, the basis for Dianetics in Freudian psychology, the religiously inspired twist only found behind multiple paywalls, the higher being known as Xenu, what broke Aaron’s belief, and his now ongoing fight against the manipulation of this still relevant, international cult. Aaron Smith-Levin is a former Scientologist and host of the “Growing Up In Scientology” YouTube channel. He was also a main interviewee on the docu-series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.” Since leaving the cult, he has devoted himself and his career to unmasking the harmful practices and beliefs held by the international religion.

As I understand it, that's not far from the mark. Stop me if you've heard this one:

There is a persistent if unsubstantiated rumor that Dianetics and Scientology were the result of a bar bet, dare, or late-night bullshit session between Hubbard and one or more other science fiction writers.

Among the writers who have asserted this are Robert Heinlein (usually credited as the Other Guy in the Bet), Isaac Asimov, and Harlan Ellison.

The most plausible version to me is that Hubbard was making money hand over fist by "treating" people with the methods put forth in Dianetics, but complained that the government was both taking all his profits in taxes and demanding "proof" for his techniques. One of his SF writer friends (possibly John W. Campbell?) pointed out that religions are not only tax-exempt, but can get away with a lot of things that a secular organization can't -- like therapy -- in the name of "religious practices".

You can find a lot of versions of this story with a quick search on "hubbard heinlein bet". I found the Quora entry the most interesting.

Dianetics System

Intro

I know, I know, controversial, but I recently got super hyperfixated on L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology, etc. and so I decided to do this (not to say that you need to have ADHD or Autism to identify as these, or that they’re all Neurogenders or hyperfixation related).

The creation of this system also doesn’t mean that I follow or support Dianetics, that I support L. Ron Hubbard or any of his actions. or that I am part of or support Scientology in any way (freezone, the Church of Scientology, or Scientology’s missions).

The Dianetics System is a system of genders (mostly Religigenders) that are related to Dianetics, parts of the belief system, and other stuff related to Dianetics in some way; some of the things start to get a little distant from just Dianetics and are closer to just L. Ron Hubbard in general, but whatever. It was a few sub and minisystems for more specific things (like Scientology and stuff) and those are listed below. I’ll link the tags for these to their titles so you can see all the tags as I start posting terms.

Also, this list might grow in the future, I’m not entirely sure.

Sub + Minisystems

Scientology Subsystem: A subsystem of the Dianetics System related to the Scientology, the Church of Scientology, and other things related to that specifically, more so than Dianetics.

   Scienfollower Minisystem: A minisystem of the Scientology Subsystem related to followers of Scientology, primarily the Church of Scientology as they’re the most well known. The name comes from a mix of Scientology and follower

   Free Zone Minisystem: A minisystem of the Scientology System related to Free Zone Scientology, specific kinds of Free Zone Scientology, etc.

   Sea Org Minisystem: A minisystem of the Scientology Subsystem related to Sea Org, it’s ships and bases, etc.

   OT Minisystem: A minisystem of the Scientology system related to OT levels

Literature Subsystem: A subsystem of the Dianetics System related to books about Dianetics, Scientology, etc.

Clear Subsystem: A subsystem of the Dianetics System related to the process of clearing, different levels of Clears, etc.

   Auditing Minisystem: A minisystem of the Clear Subsystem related to the process of Auditing in regards to Dianetics
