SWIMFAN- 2002 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know this isnt that great.... but its great!
Ben (John Tucker) has a bright future ahead of him. He is a talented swimmer set to get a scholarship and has a sweet girlfriend Amy (Shiri Appleby).
However, he becomes enamoured with mysterious new student Madison Bell and bangs her in the swimming pool.
After busting he realises hes made a huge mistake and wants to forget it, but Madison is a stage 5 clinger and has already become obsessed with Ben.
And if she cant have him.... no one can.
This is one of the better Fatal Attraction type movies! Fun early 2000s vibes with a few recognisable faces from that era. Good soundtrack. Falling from grace by the gentle waves is amazing.
Theres not many surprises but ive always really enjoyed this film.
Shoutout to my man Christopher Dante.

I’m sorry. I can’t. I try not to get involved in fandom foolishness too much. But egad, the vile treatment of Neve because she romances Lucanis if (AND ONLY IF) Rook romances neither of them is…horrific.
How, BisexualDisaster, you may ask?
1) A lot of critiquing that Neve is uncaring, unempathic, not supportive.
2) At least one claim (getting a lot of agreements in the notes) that Lucanis only gets together with Neve because it’s “easy.” She doesn’t “fix” him so he can just go on being I guess broken somehow?
3) A lot of references to her being too sexual.
4) Insinuations that she’s the type of woman you hook up with, but not the type you marry.
5) Insistence that because she is cynical, she isn’t overtly emotive in the way they would expect, she is unfeeling.
I just…..it’s awful. Why is it so awful? Well, let’s break that down point by point.
1) This is completely contradicted by canon. She goes out of her way for just about every companion to help them, even ones she isn’t super close to. She provides a sounding board and emotional support for Taash and Bellara explicitly in their quest lines. People are disregarding everything she actually says and does in the game to cast her in a role that seems entirely based on sexist and racist stereotypes.
2) There’s no basis for this either. Moreover, this is a truly troubling way to view mental health and healing. Lucanis is not a broken toy or a fixer-upper home. He doesn’t need someone to “fix” him. Nor is he too traumatized to make his own romantic choices. This argument infantilizes him, diminishes his own agency in his healing, and is sexist to boot. It’s ableist, misogynistic, and shitty.
3) This is such a common racist belief about WOC that I hardly know where to start. We are all hypersexual, and if we aren’t we are frigid and prudish and angry. I can’t even. What’s wrong with you all?
4) I’m inclined to agree that Neve isn’t a homemaker, but good grief, how tradwife can you get? I’M not a homemaker. My husband did the bulk of domestic labor in our relationship before he became disabled. Not every relationship needs to look like Leave It To Beaver, and insisting it does is wildly sexist. Oh, and this is also relying on the stereotypes of WOC all being sex-seeking ladies about town to boot.
5) This harkens to two stereotypes. The first is sexist: that women are expected to be outwardly emotive and fawning. That’s neither accurate nor fair. The second is racist: this is a subtle version of the Angry Black Woman stereotype. That WOC aren’t sweet and nurturing and only demonstrate Negative emotions.
This is ridiculous. It’s awful. It’s racist, sexist, and ableist all at once. In an effort to, what, make it so that if you don’t romance Lucanis with your Rook he can’t be with anyone else? It’s not a competition between Rook and Neve or Lucanis if your Rook is romancing them, because your LI CHOOSES ROOK. No one is stealing anyone from your Rook. It’s only if you romance neither that they get together, and the weird possessive idea that if you don’t have Lucanis no one should is deeply troubling.
Is your favorite movie Swimfan? Is it because it made you feel seen?
JFC.
Get it together, people.
Sincerely,
A WOC married to a sweet white man who knows how to cook

Movie Review: Subservience
I did actually end up watching Subservience. I had absolutely no preconceptions going into it, but ... man, bad movie. I will admit to having watched this one on a second monitor while playing a video game, but I don't think that really impacts my reading of it.
It turns out that it's an erotic thriller, and specifically, a type of erotic thriller that I'm not sure has a name, but which I'll call "man ruiner". These were all the rage in the early 90s before petering out, and I've seen it called the "woman from hell" genre, though this is a somewhat more specific subset that would exclude movies like Single White Female.
Basically, there's a hard-working but horny family man, a woman comes into his life and seduces him, he either cheats on his wife or resists temptation, then the woman goes psycho and attacks his family, his wife, and him, before dying, with the man having learned a valuable lesson and reconciled with his wife.
Fatal Attraction is the ur-example, and there aren't that many of them, even if there were enough that people got sick of them. Swimfan is a bad movie, but I have the impression that it's the most recent one people really remember.
Often the woman in question is a subordinate of some kind: a nanny, temp worker, an assistant, someone who is, in theory, in a position of much less power than our male lead. Sometimes, she's young. Sometimes real young, like creepily young (The Crush).
The psychological impetus for this kind of movie is male desire. It's playing on a male fear of a "moment of weakness". One of the key features is this inverted power dynamic. The woman is the aggressor, not just when we get to the thriller part, but as we're ramping up. The woman might be a maid or teacher or employee, but she's on the pursuit almost from the get-go, and her obsession is what drives the plot.
So this movie is just like all of those. Our protagonist is a construction foreman whose wife is in the hospital with a weak heart, and he's taking care of two little kids on his own. He hires a hot robot maid/nanny, played by Megan Fox, who basically immediately begins acting inappropriately. She eventually sleeps with the main character, but when she does, he has basically as much deniability as he possibly can while she pushes through his weak resistance. I'm pretty sure a movie like this will always have that structure, attempting to preserve the man's "virtue" and make him into a victim of the woman and her wiles. These movies are always sympathetic to the man even as he makes his "mistake".
The fact that she's a robot woman is immaterial until like ... act three. She could have just been a maid he hired until then, and virtually nothing about the plot would need to change. There's a half-assed B-plot about robots taking over a construction site and automation taking jobs, but I never felt like they were taking that seriously, and I doubt anyone in the audience was thinking that either. It didn't tie in well with the main plot.
There's fuck-all explanation for why the robot maid goes psycho, except maybe that it's part of a bad batch and our hero had her do a minor memory wipe so she could experience Casablanca fresh without her pre-programmed spoilers. This somehow gave her root access. I know that sounds stupid, but I swear that's like half the explanation they give.
This movie, and others that are in the same subgenre, come from this sort of anxiety about having power over other people, and especially being attracted to people we have power over. It's a horror story whose moral is "don't fuck the nanny" or "keep it professional with the secretary" or "absolutely do not chat up that sixteen-year-old" or just "don't shit where you eat". I think that these are good morals, but I feel vaguely gross about wrapping them in eroticism and presenting the people these horror stories happen to as the victim. The roles are almost always reversed in real life: the protagonist of this sort of movie is in a position where he's far more likely to be a perpetrator abusing a position of power. It's still a plot I can get behind, if they execute well (by this I mean, sell me on the mistake, sell me on the allure), but this one didn't.
(There is at least one example of an opposite-gender version of this basic plot, 2015's The Boy Next Door, which features Jennifer Lopez as a teacher who sleeps with a teenage student in a "moment of weakness" and gets her life wrecked when he goes obsessive stalker on her. 12% on Rotten Tomatoes. I haven't seen it but the trailer is the whole movie.)
So a bad movie, overall. It sadly had nothing to say about artificial intelligence or our relationship to it. It doesn't even really have much to say about these characters, and their relationship to each other, and the ethics of fucking a robot maid. There is a genuine lack of subservience. It's the kind of movie that makes me want to write a better version of it, something that gets at its actual themes more than it did, making better use of the conceit. But I felt no desire to absolve this man of his sins, and I think that's also one of the central fantasies the film offers, so maybe if I ever attempted to write a "man ruiner" film I would end up getting it wrong.

what are you currently working on?
Ahhh what a fun question!! Almost immediately after I finished Golden Doe in a Valley of Shadow, I started bouncing around an idea for a spooky fall/ Halloweentime Elriel release. I don't want to give too much away, but we are basically talking the Cauldron as Erika Christensen in Swimfan 🤣 It's in the early brainstorm stage (and I hope my dear friend @faeprincesswarrior will edit again. She already graciously listened to my very rough braindump a week or two ago) but mostly I can't decide whether or not I want it to be a sequel or a completely fresh Az and Elain where they haven't gotten together yet and the Cauldron wants to keep them from doing so! In fact, I'll let you guys vote on that:
(PS I worded this slightly poorly, the same basic story and premise are for either option, it's just whether or not they are together yet! Same spooky cauldron for both a fresh story or a continuation 🦇)
Other than that, I have my poetry and my WIP for my third novel attempt that I finally feel is ready to polish and query this year, Gilded Dove of Michigan. It's a darker vibe romantsy, I call it Hansel and Gretel meets Sharp Objects. A young girl was raised by witches who gain power feeding off the joy of children, then dump them in the woods by age sixteen. She has a very traumatic rest of her coming of age years and finally escapes the small town in Michigan she was stuck in. A tragedy brings her back to town years later, and she must decide if she will face her past and try to find the witches who used her and left her and her brother and sister to die or if she'll keep trying to fit in with the world and pretend it never happened.
I wrote two other novels before this, and both got feedback that they were too avante garde for a freshman debut 🤣 which was honestly a fair assessment.
But fic writing is quickly becoming a passion and hobby I'd really love to continue, and I am considering opening my inbox up for one shots and prompts once Elriel month is over!

I have a cute dog. Sometimes it's my dog when my roommate is too sick to take care of him. Other times it's her dog... When she says I'm being abusive and she wants to take something away from me.
Ive always felt trapped in relationships
with my brother, who saw me as a mother, a person to embarrass when he could get away with it. Pull my dress up in front of the cute boy at church. Squeeze and snap my first phalanges of my first finger over and over because he's stimming and doesn't trust our parents.
My mother whose high functioning cognitively impaired and narcissistic. My biggest swimfan. How much can I destroy your life bc I hate paying for things and I'm a retard so I need a loser best friend.
My handsome father who was trapped by my cognitively impaired mother, her family trapped him in an arranged marriage and he was physically abusive and handsy. Crazy, miserable, depressed, super selfish.
Life in the Midwest. Where everyone thinks one way and you're shunned in every other thought.
And now I still feel trapped. I ate too much. I'm too angry. I hate driving.. still in a life I hate.
I live in a town I hate but my car isn't ready to leave and I'm too open minded to live anywhere else.
biggest issue, I disagree with rapists and child predators and unfortunately the world is run by them. Oppresser versus the oppressed.
I should probably get a job, but Im so volatile that I'm scared I might scream at someone.. why go through the embarrassment?
I've always thought, if you go through life and death to many times, why do you have to work? Shouldn't you just rest? Heal? Have good sex? Whatever happened to being the best wife ever? Doesn't fulfilling every sexual fantasy of the person you're obsessed with sound like a good job?
Trauma.
Why is it that it's always men who say "get over it" while they rarely deal with heavy petting starting from birth.
....
In Korea, men get fondled from birth, their "family jewels" are the pride of their parents, grandparents, family. My father was the first born. He got it the worst and he's fucking psycho. He was always pinching my breasts, fondling my butt. Beating me up out of frustration.
Guys bully one another, sure, but are they always sexually harassed as well? I want to tear the skin off my eyeballs thinking of child rape victims. 9 year olds having sex with men their dads age. While $$$men bond over cigars and biting children. It's disgusting. Those girls grow up psycho, screaming about everything.
Id know. As the screamer and being screamed at.
So today, I feel guilty for shoving the shit out of my dog for biting my roommate. And the thing still loves me. I hate feeding him dinner. I know how wrong this is. Still, it's how I feel.
And so, every day I work through why people bond? What is love? How is it they care, when I don't zero. Why do people care if I'm homeless ? I try to help people. But I'm not the same as them. I don't think many people actively fantasize killing their parents. Try to kill their brother when they're 6. They love their family. Want to buy them things....
Ew. Why? Did your parents try to kill you all the time? No? Oh.
