Nicky Parlouzer on the brain again. That means it's time to talk about Alter-Egos!
Let's go through some basics:
Summary: It's five years after a rough approximation of the events of the original Shogakukan manga. Nicky has moved back to Station Square as his parents (Jules and Bernie) have finally returned from an important under cover mission. Nicky soon meets Dexter Robotnik and the two become fast friends. However, not everything is as it seems. The mysterious hero, Sonic the Hedgehog, has apparently come to Station Square as well. And there's a new hero as well: Shadow the Hedgehog. Something strange is going on. What are Sonic and Shadow’s true origins? And what is Jules hiding . . . ?
Status: I currently have 18 chapters fully written and I'm nearing the climax. I want to wait until the whole thing is done before I post it because I want to be able to go through the whole thing and fix any story weirdness. This is one of my oldest Sonic AUs, so there's probably a lot of wonky writing. Currently, I'm stuck on how to proceed with a major plot point, but I'm hoping to figure it out soon and get a move on with finishing this thing!!

Games I played in 2024.
Man, fuck this year. Here are some video games I felt like talking about, I guess.
(2023 ⇐ 2024)
ABZÛ
There are a few different throughlines to the games I played this year. One is that I delved deep into my backlog; games I picked up in a bundle or a Steam sale some 6 or 7 years ago but never found the time or the hardware for. There are a lot of them. Most of them were worth the wait. I've long since given up on the idea of playing every single game in my libraries to completion, but it's nice to have options.
Another throughline was seeking out shorter games. I've… had some trouble focusing on longer projects this year, so games that I could play in short bursts (like The Solitaire Conspiracy), complete in a few sessions (like What Remains of Edith Finch), or even a single sitting (like Dépanneur Nocturne) were useful for filling in the time. ABZÛ was the first, and ended up being one of the best. Simple but effective gameplay, immaculate visuals and music, and a lot of fish. It was only a couple hours long, but it was the best couple hours I played all year.
Pikmin 4
I played though Pikmin 2 several years ago and had a good time. Last year I picked up a used copy of Pikmin 3 at a convention on a lark, played through it, and had a good time. This year my brother got me Pikmin 4 as a gift, I played though it, and had an excellent time. There's a certain charm these games have that keeps bringing me back, and the most recent game showcases the best of all of them.
Splatoon 3: Side Order
Ahh, time sinks. I still play Sky on the regular, return to Animal Crossing every now and then, and even threw a bit of Eastward: Octopia into the mix. I completed many more loops of Cobalt Core, and more races in F-Zero 99. Over the summer I even found time for some long sessions of Civilization 6.
Splatoon 3 was another mainstay, but this year it reached the proverbial end of the line. The game is still around and I still play it, but like with Animal Crossing before it, the game has been "finished" in that peculiar way live service games are. What exists now will continue to exist, but everything they wanted to do with it is done. Thanks for playing, enjoy the reruns, see y'all in the sequel.
But if it had to end, the one-two punch of Side Order and the Grand Fest made for a good capstone — a well-crafted single-player challenge, and a spectacular you-had-to-be-there finale for the multiplayer side. I can say I was there at the beginning and there at the end, and I'm glad I was along for the ride.
Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers
Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart and its antecedents are a thing I've been vaguely aware of for a long time but never followed too closely, so the sequel was a welcome surprise. It offered an abundance of content and a robust single-player mode, and it's a free fan-made project, so I figured "why not" and gave it a try, and was subsequently hooked for a good month or so. Not everything clicked with me — it's way more mechanically complex than any other kart racer I've seen (I'm told that's part of the appeal, but I've never had the dexterity for it), and it can get frustrating very fast whether you're racing against the CPU or against other players. All the same I can't help but admire it. Ring Racers is a passion project that's as much a love letter to itself as anything that came before, and apologizes for none of it.
Patrick's Parabox
I'll always make room for puzzle games, and this was the standout of this year's lot. Sokoban games can range from "okay" to "clicks with me immediately and is an instant favorite" (Baba Is You et al). Parabox landed squarely in the latter category, occupying my brain for a good few weeks until I'd solved every last level. The different ways it layers puzzles on top of each other were fun to figure out, especially when it starts introducing new ways to "break" them, which it turn become additional layers of the puzzle. Highly recommended.
(Honorable puzzle mentions: The Pedestrian, Linelith, Arranger, Bonfire Peaks, 7 Billion Humans)
Epigraph
While Patrick's Parabox was the best puzzle game I played this year, Epigraph was the most unique. It's another game about deciphering a fictional language à la Chants of Sennaar or Heaven's Vault (which is to say, one that appeals to me specifically), but in a much more compressed form. The entire game consists of a single, very complex puzzle. You're given seven artifacts with undeciphered writing, and a couple paragraphs of notes to start you off, and that's all you get. From there, you have to unravel the language piece by piece, isolating individual words and phrases and meanings until you understand the bigger picture. That such a leap is possible at all is a testament to how well designed the puzzle is. Like I said last year, I want more games like this to exist.
One caveat: only being a single puzzle means there's functionally no feedback unless you've solved the whole thing, so if you've almost solved it, it can be difficult to figure out which part of your solution you need to fix. It's only a minor gripe that didn't detract from the experience overall; as it turns out, I felt the same way about the final puzzle of…
TUNIC
I've been sitting on this one for a while. It's consistently been at the top of my wishlist ever since it was announced all those years ago. I bought the soundtrack the day it came out, but I never delved into the game itself until this summer. Something about TUNIC always drew me back towards it. I knew it was a game I wanted to experience blind, and now that I've done so, it'll be a game that occupies my thoughts for a long time.
TUNIC, the adventure game, is good! A charming little title in the vein of the old Zeldas. Exploring the game world is fun and gives a very satisfying sense of progression, whether though finding new tools and weapons, opening new paths, or discovering hidden paths that were there all along. Fighting enemies and bosses is challenging, but not insurmountable. It does get kinda frustrating in the back half, especially the last boss. The built-in accessibility options make it much more tolerable.
All of this is tied together by TUNIC's central gimmick, an in-game manual pieced together page by page. Most of it is written in a script you cannot read, and it leaves you just enough information to intuit what needs to be done, but forces you to dig deeper if you want to learn the truth: TUNIC, the puzzle game, is a masterstroke. Much like all of those hidden paths and shortcuts, all of the information you need is placed in front of you even if you don't realize it. Decoding the cipher text, and understanding the meaning of the Holy Cross and the Golden Path (not even solving the puzzle, just realizing what the puzzle actually is), was the most satisfying thing I've done in a game in years.
TOEM
Some games are memorable for a particularly hard challenge, or a compelling narrative, or a perfectly crafted setpiece level. Some games are memorable because they're just really pleasant. No stress, no time limits, just vibes. Everything about this game puts a huge grin on my face — the music, the characters, all the places to explore and secrets to find and puzzles to solve. A week, a month, a year from now, I'll have a stray thought about TOEM, and my day will be a little brighter because of it.
I like this game a lot, y'all. Very much looking forward to the sequel whenever that comes out. Take a picture, it'll last longer.
(Honorable mentions from the archives: Storyteller, A Little to the Left, Freshly Frosted, Wavetale, Islets, Arranger)
Here Comes Niko!
While we're on the subject of pleasant games, this is another one I've been meaning to play for a while, and another one I enjoyed a fair amount. Looking back, TOEM and Niko! have a lot in common — vibe-centric games with 2D characters running around in a carefully crafted 3D world, carried by a charming aesthetic and cast of characters, with a core loop of travelling from town to town and doing various small tasks to make friends and help people out. The biggest differences are the genres (photography puzzle versus collect-a-thon platformer), the color scheme (minimalist and monochrome versus bright pastel)… and one more key detail.
I knew most of what to expect when I started, the soundtrack and the aesthetic and the platforming, but knew next to nothing about the story, which caught me off guard. Early on it hits you with a moment of "…oh," that lingers throughout the game as you learn more about what the protagonist is actually trying to accomplish. (At some point I want to write up a comparison of the narratives of Niko! and A Short Hike, but it'd be an entire essay in itself so I'll spare you the details.) I didn't go into Here Comes Niko! looking for pathos, but that's what it gave me and I think it was a better experience because of that. Kudos.
(Honorable mentions from the "I'll get around to this one eventually" list, that I got around to eventually: Going Under, Creature in the Well, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, Sonic Mania, What Remains of Edith Finch, RiME)
Anthology of the Killer
The best game of 2024. Like, unironically.
This comes from another developer (thecatamites) that I've been vaguely aware of as someone who makes interesting niche art projects, but only really knew about secondhand from other people, which was still enough to put it on my radar. And now, I cannot get this goddamn thing out of my head. It burrowed in months ago and has lived there rent-free ever since. At some point I need to introduce my siblings to this game because I just need to talk to somebody about it.
Anthology of the Killer is a lot of things. It's a collection of nine short narrative games that have been released over the past few years. It's surrealist horror comedy, and dances between all of those aspects whenever it pleases. It's a satirical take on history and modernity and art. It's a story about death cults and pop music fads. It's about just trying to get by even as the world around you gets stranger and more violent, or as you realize that maybe it already was. It's crude and bloody, and gets away with it by looking like it was drawn in MS Paint. It's a game where I can say something like "Heart is probably the best overall, but Flesh is underrated" and not sound like I'm losing my mind. It's the most well-written game I've experienced this year, and possibly any year.
"Aren't the stars pretty? Isn't it a nice night? Do you think the world is basically good or basically bad?" "Man, I just work here."
Who knows. Maybe 2025 will be better. Just gonna keep spinning the wheels for a while, see if it gets me anywhere. See y'all next year.

The two 90s Sonic the Hedgehog series (like that wouldn’t be confusing)
[All images are owned by Sega and DIC animation. Please don’t sue or Roboticize me]
youtube
(Thanks to TheNawaf258)
One cannot understate the importance of the spiny mammal with the freakish blue spines and even more freakish speed that bust onto the scene when Sega introduced the Genesis in the early 90s. Before Sonic, a certain company whose mascot was a certain plumber ruled the home video game market. Now we had a contest!
In fact, Sonic’s popularity was so huge that in 1993 not one, but two animated series were created by DIC Animation! The first, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, made the weekday syndicated circuit.
youtube
(Thanks to Choones The Train Driver)
Tumblr media
The series follows Sonic (voiced by Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel in Family Matters) and his best friend (introduced in the second Sonic game) Miles Prower (a play on “Miles per Hour”) AKA “Tails” (so nicknamed due to the fact that he has 2 tails that he can spin like a propeller, enabling him to fly) as they defend the planet Mobius from...
Tumblr media
Dr. Robotnik and his primary cybernetic cohorts...
Tumblr media
...Grounder (left) and Scratch.
The plots (and gags) are straight out of Looney Toons. The bad guys are complete idiots who are easily thwarted by Sonic and Tails.
Tumblr media
This series was definitely designed with the under-10 crowd in mind. As I was easily double that in ‘93, I wasn’t overly impressed with the series. However, if you would like to watch the series, it’s available on Netflix.
If I was less than thrilled at Sonic’s impression of Bugs Bunny, what DIC produced for the Saturday morning crowd was the exact opposite!
youtube
(Thanks to 90sCartoonIntros)
Sonic the Hedgehog sets a vastly different tone than Adventures does, making it in my opinion vastly superior to its weekday version.
Tumblr media
Jaleel White again voices Sonic (just to add to the confusion), but this time he’s one of the inner circle of a group of freedom fighting animals attempting to free Mobius from...
Tumblr media
...Dr. Ivo Robotnik (voiced by Jim Cummings, whose voice credits are too numerous to list but is the voice of Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger too!) since the late 90s), who has transformed most of the world’s inhabitants into cyborgs enslaved to him. Alongside his robotic army, Robotnik has transformed Mobius into a dystopian hellscape. Unlike the weekday kiddie fare in which Robotnik was trying to take over Mobius, he has actually succeeded and is the evil overlord of the world! Yes, this version of Robotnik is actually menacing, as opposed to a fat, bald Yosemite Sam in the weekday version.
Assisting Sonic in his fight are...
Tumblr media
Princess Sally Acorn (voiced by Kath Soucie, who voiced Phil and Lil in Rugrats), the leader of the Resistance and the closest thing to a love interest Saturday Morning fare could show.
Tumblr media
Antoine Depardieu (voiced by Rob Paulsen, who voiced Yakko Warner in Animaniacs and Raphael in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series), the incompetent comic relief who speaks in a stereotypically bad French accent and more than a little jealous of the attention Sonic gets from Sally.
Tumblr media
Bunnie Rabbot (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh, whose many voice credits include Dexter in Dexter’s Laboratory and Chuckie in Rugrats), who is full of Southern charm and sass. She also had a run-in with Robotnik somewhere in her past, which resulted in her getting bionic legs and a bionic arm.
Tumblr media
And of course you can’t have Sonic without Tails (voiced by Bradley Pierce, who voiced Chip in the animated Beauty and the Beast and played Peter in Jumanji) since they shared a video game together.
There is a definite edge, a sense of danger, and a small bit of body horror (when you consider there are living beings trapped within some of those robotic shells) to the series. If it was made with an older audience in mind, things could’ve been taken a bit farther, but it was the early 90s and Gargoyles and X-Men were still a few years away (and Batman: the Animated Series was still a new concept)
If you would like to watch an episode, it’s available on Roku.
As always, if you would like to see a particular episode reviewed, let me know!

A Guide to Autonomous Mobile Robots and Robot Manipulators - Technology Org
Robotics is becoming a key and game-changing part of fast-moving technological advancements, signalling the start of a new period of progress and creativity.
A robot – illustrative photo.
Among the various advancements, autonomous mobile robots and robot manipulators have emerged as pivotal elements in reshaping numerous industries. These robotic systems, exemplified by the pioneering work of companies like Robotnik, are not just futuristic concepts but are actively transforming the way tasks are performed in diverse environments.
Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) represent a significant leap in robotic technology. Unlike their predecessors, these robots are equipped with advanced sensors and software that allow them to navigate and operate independently in a variety of settings. This independence is crucial in industries like logistics, healthcare, and manufacturing, where efficiency and precision are paramount.
These robots are designed to handle tasks ranging from material transportation to complex assembly processes, all while ensuring safety and reliability.
Central to the discussion of modern robotics is the “robot manipulator“. These devices extend the capabilities of robots by providing them with the ability to interact with their environment in a more intricate and precise manner. Robot manipulators are essentially robotic arms, equipped with various end-effectors, enabling them to perform tasks that require dexterity and precision.
Mobile manipulators combine the mobility of AMRs with the functionality of robotic arms, creating a hybrid that can navigate and manipulate objects simultaneously. This integration opens up new possibilities in automation, where tasks that require both movement and manipulation can be seamlessly executed.
The integration of robotics into daily operations goes beyond industrial applications. Autonomous mobile robots and robot manipulators are finding their place in areas such as healthcare, where they assist in tasks ranging from patient care to pharmaceutical logistics. The adaptability of these robots, as demonstrated by Robotnik’s diverse product range, underscores their potential to revolutionize various sectors.
Moreover, the environmental impact of robotics is an aspect that cannot be overlooked. Robots like those developed by Robotnik are designed to operate efficiently, reducing waste and energy consumption. This aspect of robotics contributes to sustainable practices in industries, aligning technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
As we look towards the future, the possibilities in robotics seem boundless. The advancements in autonomous mobile robots and robot manipulators are just the beginning. Companies like Robotnik are continuously pushing the boundaries, developing robots that are more intelligent, versatile, and integrated into our lives.
The evolution of robotics is not just about the machines themselves but also about the way they interact with humans. The future may see a more collaborative environment where robots and humans work side by side, each complementing the other’s abilities. This synergy could lead to unprecedented levels of productivity and innovation.
Robotnik’s commitment to advancing mobile service robotics, as seen in their R&D projects, is a testament to the dynamic nature of this field. Their focus on developing mobile platforms and manipulators that are both sophisticated and user-friendly is setting a standard in the industry.

Sonic the Hedgehog’s Gameworld
Original platform: Sega Pico
Original release: August 1994
Available to buy: No
Tumblr media
The first thing to talk about with this is the console it appears on: the Sega Pico. This is an “edutainment” device released in 1993. The internals were the same as a Mega Drive, but it featured a drawing pad and a pen, and the cartridges were books. The console can recognise which page you are on, and you can even press parts of the book to activate things in the game.
This game is a collection of minigames that take place in an amusement arcade. Each page of the book features a collection of minigames, plus some short dialogue (some of it voiced) from the characters.
The first page features a car race where you have to tap a button to go fast, a Skee-Ball minigame where you have to select the right power to aim your ball, a climbing game where you tap fast to win, and a basketball hoop game where you have to aim to shoot balls into hoops (although I found it easier to just aim forward and wait for the moving targets to align).
The second page has a Simon Says flag matching game, a crane machine where you pick up toys, and Whac-A-Mole where you have to tap the drawing pad to hit Dr. Robotnik.
The third page has three mini games. One based on the “ball under a cup” game where a bird hides inside an egg and is swapped around with empty eggs and a card game where you have to match pairs of cards. The third is a battle between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik where they’re throwing rings at each other. You press a button and a random icon is selected which determines who gets to throw a ring.
The final page of games has a game that is a bit like “Finders Keepers”. You have to run around multiple floors of a building, looking under everything for emeralds.
Then the game has an extra page where you get to colour in and draw. In the Japanese version, it features casino based minigames instead, like a roulette wheel.
For the intended audience, it’s a pretty fun minigame collection, and as it focuses on “dexterity”, feels like it’s much heavier on the “video game” side of things than “educational”.

STCO Iblis
So I wanted to talk a little about Sonic The Comic Online Version of Iblis, given I found him interesting despite only appearing one time and a lot of his early life being shrouded in mystery aside from "He is a One Hedgehog Apocalypse"
Now STCO Version of Iblis foregoes the concept of Solaris aside from using it as names and instead Super Sonic takes his place, becoming the being that left Silver's future into ruins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How he came to be is not explicitly explained, it's implied that It's the same thing that are shown in the Unleashed Arc without Silver being there...even if that story only kick-started because Silver interfered. My personal take is that Sonic just snapped out of being a fugitive for so long and Super Sonic took over permanently as a result.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, one thing I noticed about STCO Iblis is that he actually (albeit loosely) does resemble his namesake:The Islamic Devil:Iblis
Now, Iblis(Also Known as the King Of Devils) is know as a Fire Djinn and a fallen angel because he refused to bow down to Adam on God's request, so he was banished to hell.
Now, Super Sonic got the Fire and Devil part down, but what about the "Banished because he refused to bow down" part?
Well, that's actually filled by STCO Sonic himself in a way.
Sonic was defamated and framed so he would become public enemy #1 by an elaborate plan made by Grimer as revenge for fighting back and defeating Robotnik so many times he became insane.
Tumblr media
Basically, he refused to bow down to Adam/God and therefore was turned into a fugitive Pariah, someone seen as evil, a devil.
This set the events in motion for Sonic/Super Sonic to eventually become the Iblis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alternatively you can say that Super Sonic himself refused to bow down to Dexter and be a mindless guided missile and eventually that resulted in him becoming the Iblis, but that was something he did on his own.
It's hard to say if this was intentional or not, probably not but it's still a funny coincidence.

Check out the RE-RE-REMIX!
(WARNINGS: DESCRIPTIONS FOR GRAPHIC VIOLENCE, MURDER, EDGY STUFF)
“SONIC’S HERE! CODE BLUE! CODE BLUE! Everybody scatter, I repeat, everybody sc-aaGHTBCKK!”
A long, silvery blade protruded through the watchman’s torso, clean through the heart, painted scarlet by the civilian’s blood. His body tumbled lifelessly to the floor, eyes wide in horror. Screams filled the area, with Mobians running every which way. Some sat on the floor, immediately giving up as others were trampled in the chaos.
It wasn’t until rounds were fired off in the air that the crowd stopped its discord– The blade spun around a dexterous hand, belonging to the former hero Sonic the Hedgehog… but that name was long dead. The one who bore that face now wasn’t a world renowned hero, but a notorious psychopath… Spinbot. The number one enforcer for the Eggman Empire. One of Robotnik’s leading soldiers… His teeth were in a wide, blue and glowing grin, and his optics shone with excitement.
“Y’know, I gotta say… Pretty ballsy of you guys… Hostin’ this rave party underneath Metropolis? Like Lord Eggman wouldn’t find out? Wow, that’s like, seriously sick. I mean it, props to the dude who set it up.” Hushed silence as Spinbot stepped through the room, each footstep of his golden boots creating an echo in the quiet. On either side of him was a large, nondescript flying robot, hovering menacingly, but intimidatingly quiet nonetheless. For their size, they really didn’t do much other than hum ominously.
Spinbot gestured towards the DJ booth, pointing his cutlass towards the rabbit on stage, “Ring Rabbit! I can’t believe you didn’t invite me, man… I’m one of your biggest fans! Pretty cringe that you’re siding with the Rebels, though…. I mean, ‘cause now I’m gonna kill ya. And everybody else in here.”
Hushed, frantic whispering, the sound of someone breaking into loud sobs… Spinbot’s grin widened. Ring Rabbit stood up on a nearby speaker, throwing off his visor and revealing the massive gash across his face. “You can’t be serious! You call yourself a fan, but where do you think all this music comes from? It doesn’t come from Eggman, it comes from free people. People who think and feel and love! You think that once we’re all gone, that music’s gonna be made? If you kill me, you’ll never get a new track, you’ll never get something to dance to. You’ll be taking away peoples’ hopes and dreams– The Sonic I knew… that woulda MEANT something to him! So are you a PHONEY or what!?”
Murmuring once more filled the silence, and Spinbot’s smile faltered– it was as if something had touched him inside. His eyes widened, and he looked… afraid, but only for a moment. A hand touched to his chest, and he dropped the cutlass. “… You… You’re right… Wow… Nobody’s ever… Tried to explain it to me like that before. If I kill you, if I kill these Rebel Musicians, then… There’s never gonna be more music, people aren’t gonna create anymore…” His eyes met Ring Rabbit’s, and he winced, “I’d miss out on all the music you’d never have a chance to make.”
A swift movement–Spinbot drew his laser rifle, and Ring Rabbit’s head simply ceased to be, with a splatter of neon pink blood and screams filling the arena. The Rabbit’s lifeless, headless body collapsed onto the floor, knocking over his sound system as Spinbot lowered his weapon… a shit-eating grin on his face.
Tumblr media
“That’s fine with me–Your new stuff’s shit anyway. Ahahahahaha!” Holstering his weapon, Spinbot zipped to the middle of the dance floor, breaking it down for a few minutes as he danced to the screams and shrieks of the other Rebels being gunned down by the Hover Bots–finally, he struck he pose, “THIS mass extermination BROUGHT TO YOU by THE EGGMAN EMPIRE! Join today so you can be RE-RE-RE-RE-RE-REMIXED, JUST like your FAVORITE! TRUE! BLUE! HERO!!”

I GRANT YE THE RANDOM NUMBER IN THIS MOMENT TO BE: 37
and also maybe another of 1... *wink wink*
37 (AHAHAHA YOU FOUND ALTER-EGOES!!!!! :D :D :D :D):
“You’re back,” Jules finally remarked.
“I am,” Gerald said.
“Why?” Jules asked. “What were you thinking? You know how dangerous it is! Everything would’ve been fine if you’d stayed away, but no. You not only came back, but you also enrolled Dexter in the same school as Nicky! And were you aware that the two of them met today?”
“I . . . was not,” Gerald admitted.
“Why?” Jules repeated. “Why did you bring him back when you knew how dangerous it would be?”
1 (>:D):
“That was sloppy.” Black Doom’s voice fills Shadow’s head.
“We managed to get the emerald. And Eclipse is alive,” Shadow thinks back. “That’s what matters.”
“I expected more from both of you.”
“Don’t you even care that he almost died?!” Shadow demands without thinking. A moment later he realizes how stupid that was. He’s never supposed to talk back to his master.
Black Doom sends pure rage through the Hive Mind and Shadow screams as he grips his head in pain. It’s a method of torture that Shadow hasn’t experienced too many times before.
“Eclipse is a means to an end!” Black Doom lectures, keeping up the mental punishment. “Whether he lives or dies has no effect on us. Should he die, it only serves to prove that he is not worthy to be your training partner. Do you understand?”

Sonic Underground Reboot: Powers
Along with Sonic having super-speed, all members of the Ericius (Hedgehog) Royal Family have special powers, so Sonia, Manic, and Aleena each have their own superpower too. Also, the triplets will develop other abilities through the course of the plot.
The origin of these powers is explained in this post about how I’m using the Power Rings, Deep Power Stones, and Chaos Emeralds in this au but here’s a summary. A long time ago a Mobian attempted to use the Chaos Emeralds to gain power but got corrupted by them and the uncontrolled energy of the Emeralds threatened to destroy Mobius. The First Hedgehog Ruler used the Deep Power Stones to contain the energy of the Chaos Emeralds and save Mobius. While containing the Emeralds, some of their energy seeped into the First Ruler and merged with the energy of the Power Stones. This combination resulted in the First Ruler permanently developing powers, which then they passed down to their descendants.
Enhanced Abilities: Each of the current royal hedgehogs has a power that enhances a physical ability:
Sonic has his classic super speed
Sonia has super strength
Manic has super dexterity. Due to how subtle this ability is, he initially was unaware that it was unusual and thought that he didn’t have a power.
Aleena has enhanced senses which allow her to see and hear things that are far away. She uses this ability to watch over her children without them realizing it.
All of them also posses some level of enhanced agility that allows them to skillfully move around and evade Robotnik’s minions.
Elemental Manipulation: Along their enhanced abilities, the Royal Hedgehogs each possess the power to manipulate elements. Though most can only manipulate a single element, some members can manipulate two which is know as dual affinity. Sonic, Manic, and Sonia all have double affinities.
Sonic can manipulate wind and lightning
Sonia can manipulate fire and light
Manic can manipulate earth and metal
Aleena can manipulate water in all its forms, including ice and vapor.
Chaos Energy Affinity: All of the Royal Hedgehogs have an affinity/connection to Chaos energy, which allows them to use the Chaos Emeralds without becoming corrupted by their power.

CA Summary and Character Bios
Tumblr media
So, as promised, I wrote up a basic summary of the AU and the character bios for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles (with rough sketches)! Sorry it’s a little late.
------------------- Summary -------------------
As I mentioned initially, this AU is set in a dystopian cyberpunk world. The population of the world (human and mobian) have come together to live in several titanic cities after a worldwide climate shift hundreds of years ago made wastelands out of over 80% of the land. The Chaos Emeralds are thought of as myth and most Mobian culture has been lost to time.
In this time, people with Chaos Abilties (superpowers essentially) are called “Chaos-Touched” and are a seemingly recent development. The amount of energy in their bodies makes them unstable and essentially ticking time bombs unless they use their abilities and release enough chaos energy on a day to day basis. The government and researchers stepped in with proposed solutions and the world went on. This is where the story starts.
Sonic is a chaos-touched individual thrust into the world of the Chaos Arena: a fighting tournament meant to allow strongly gifted Chaos-Touched to release their powers in spectacular fights. Sponsored by Robotnik Industries, he must fight through a system that isn’t quite as clean as it makes itself out to be.
That is, until the Chaos Emeralds make their grand reappearance.
TLDR: Sonic, an athlete in the Chaos Arena, is trapped in a seemingly never ending cycle of fighting for his life due to the mere existence of his powers. However, everything changes when the Chaos Emeralds return and prove themselves to be more than just myth.
(This was about as short and sweet as I could get it, oops! I did my best lol... Thanks to those who gave me tips and guidance on how to actually put together a summary!!)
Tumblr media
------------------- Sonic the Hedgehog -------------------
Age: 15
Chaos Abilities: Super Sonic Speed and Dexterity
Personality: Similar to his canon counterpart, Sonic is someone who is very set in his own convictions. He has a strong sense of justice, and values freedom above most everything in his life. He tends to be overconfident and can’t help but show off and joke around, even when the timing is off. He is fiercely loyal to those he cares about. In this AU, he has lost that freedom that he so valued and as a result tends to be more short tempered, aggressive, and stir crazy than his canon counterpart.
About: Having extraordinarily high levels of chaos energy, he was a shoe in to be an athlete in the Chaos Arena. Sonic has seen great success, having won many of his fights, and even has his own fanbase. Despite this, he genuinely hates the sport and his “generous” primary sponsor, the illustrious Robotnik Industries. He longs to leave the city and travel the world with no restrictions. Sonic has only lived in the city and been a part of the Chaos Arena for a year, having grown up on South Island.
Tumblr media
------------------- Miles “Tails” Prower -------------------
Age: 8
Chaos Abilities: Intelligence and Flight
Personality: Like his canon counterpart, Tails is a generally good-natured and inventive child who is more mature than his age would suggest. He is typically more timid and quiet around those he does not know. Despite this he is cunning and subtle, able to twist and manipulate situations behind the scenes. In this AU, he has a warped sense of trust in anyone who isn’t Sonic and he is not above deceiving others to accomplish his goals. He also tends to fall victim to worry and crippling anxiety.
About: Sonic’s best friend and surrogate brother who lived with him for two years back when they lived on South Island together. Having been drafted into Robotnik Industries at the tender age of six for unstable levels of chaos energy, Tails has been tasked by Ivo Robotnik himself to research ancient Mobian culture and translate the lost Mobian language. He was never told why, and over the years has only become more and more frustrated with the odd and seemingly impossible task.
Tumblr media
------------------- Knuckles the Echidna -------------------
Age: 16
Chaos Abilties: Strength and Chaos Manipulation
Personality: Like his canon counterpart, Knuckles is strong willed, serious, and brash. He is anchored to his duty and morals and is not easily swayed from them. He tends to have a ridiculously short temper and is not one for joking around. In this AU, he is actually quite insecure of his short temper, as he was always taught that a guardian was meant to stay calm and collected under all situations. He is a man of his word, and if he makes a promise he would die to keep it.
About: The current Guardian of the Master Emerald and Angel Island. While his origins are shrouded in mystery, Knuckles is well aware of the fact that he is the last echidna alive. He is cut off from society, as he has never left the island and the world is unaware of Angel Island’s existence. He has the ability to communicate with the spirit of the demigod Tikal through his red chaos emerald and the Master Emerald, and she has taught him everything he knows.

Note
Hippie Maria would make so much sense and ve so perfect. She idolized peace and harmony so much and Shadow idolizes her. Also like Grandpabotnik being the opposite of his grandson. He wants to cure sickness and better humanity because its the right thing to do and such. Meanwhile our Robotnik in the movies has a... Complex. So a hippie family living on a space station just sounds amazing to me
Why did my mind instantly go to Mandark from Dexter’s Laboratory and his hippie parents?
When you idealize your scientist grandfather but it turns out he was a hippie.

So some cartoon VA connections for fun. In Sonic the Hedgehog the 90's show (or SatAM), Christine Cavanaugh (RIP) and Kath Soucie are Bunny and Sally. In Dexter's Lab, Christine was the original Dexter and Kath played Dexter's computer as well as his mother. Also, Jim Cummings plays Robotnik and hes Darkwing Duck! Christine played his adorakable tomboy adopted daughter, Gosalyn.
Rob Paulsen who plays Antoine was in both shows as well!!
