I often begin this column by noting the wide variety of manga and light novels we’re covering that week, and while I always mean it, this week particularly takes the cake. We’ve got isekai and crossdressing manhwa (got it…); an artbook and a coloring book (wow, cool!); and a Magic: The Gathering-focused romance set in the 90s and a series that combines Madoka Magica with sci-fi (WOH). Check out our thoughts on these diverse series below and let us know what you’re reading!
-----
Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated. A Magic: The Gathering Manga (Vol. 1) • Finding Camellia (Vol. 1) • Hero Syndrome (Vol. 1) • Spy x Family: The Official Coloring Book • Uncle from Another World (Vol. 10) • Visions 2023: Illustrators Book (pixiv)

December 2024 Reading Wrap-Up
I've read eight books this month, and most were entirely neutral to good for me...with one exception. That means that my grand total of books for 2024 was 103, though I only enjoyed somewhere around 30 of them. Anyway, here's the December list:
Religious Text
None applicable.
1/10 - Why Did They Publish This?
Egregores: The Occult Entities That Watch Over Human Destiny | Mark Stavish
Just gonna link this...
2/10 - Trash
None applicable.
3/10 - Meh
None applicable.
4 to 6/10 - Mid-Tier
Seventy-Eight Degrees Of Wisdom: A Tarot Journey To Self-Awareness | Rachel Pollack
I respect what this book has historically done for tarot and tarot reading, but as a standalone book outside of that context, I didn't...enjoy it.
7 to 8/10 - Good With Caveats
Scorpions Of Medical Importance | Hugh L Keegan
A very fascinating book on scorpions from 1980. Despite this, not every scorpion depicted here is deadly. What I thought was most fascinating was the fact that it called the deathstalker (Leiurus quinquestriatus) the only species in Leiurus...because 18 out of 19 of the other ones were only discovered after the book was published. It is pretty outdated as far as listed places with antivenins goes, though.
Scorpions: Plus Other Popular Invertebrates | Jerry G Walls
A decent book on caring for scorpions, considering it goes really in-depth despite only having 88 pages. I did skip over the appendices at the back about other invertebrates though, because while I'm not scared of scorpions, I'm scared of many of the other bugs and arachnids in the back. No thank you.
Garfield Fat Cat 3-Pack, volume 25 | Jim Davis
I picked this one on a whim from the library I work at because I love Garfield comics. Fuck you. The caveat I have for this one is that if you don't enjoy reading 286 pages of mostly-three-panel-comics, it won't be enjoyable. I had fun though.
9/10 - Very Very Good
The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art Of Decluttering And Organizing | Marie Kondo
I actually found this book surprisingly helpful??? Which was irritating to me, because I'm always surprised when popular things are actually...good. Though Marie Kondo's theory doesn't work for everyone since it's very focused on how you feel, and if you're struggling to feel anything for any reason, it's not gonna help much. I do think it's very funny that she outright encourages you to send her book away if it doesn't spark joy either. Incredible.
Michelangelo: Paintings, Sculptures, Architecture | Ludwig Goldscheider
This is a series of photographs of many, many of Michelangelo's works, and the quality of the photos are gorgeous. I found this on the free table of the library I work at and enjoyed flipping through and admiring the details.
Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated, volume 1 | Katsura Ise, Takuma Yokota
Yes, yes, this is a new printing of an old Magic: The Gathering manga about players playing the game. I didn't expect the prophecies of Nostradamus to be a major plot point. And I fucking loved it.
10/10 - Unironically Recommend To Everyone
None applicable.

wrong
you know how I wanted a manga about an actual card game? “destroy all humanity. it can’t be regenerated” is a manga about actual Magic the Gathering in 1998
and the matches are coherent, follow tyhe rules, are good magic plays, with real magic decks of the time, and also are narrated like yugioh matches
oh man "destroy all humanity it can't be regenerated" is exactly what I want

Happy Saturday Bookies!
Graphic novel and Manga move is NOW complete, you can now browse our beautifully spacious shelves and gaze upon the beautiful drawings with much more ease. I couldn’t help but think about what are/were my favourite manga/anime series while I was expanding the section once again. I used to read TONS of manga growing up in from probably grade 7 and up and it brought back lots of memories, so I thought I could share a few of my favourites. It’s going to be a long post, so I hope you are prepared.
Sailor Moon- Absolute favourite manga and anime series (Just ask Sam) I am pretty sure that everyone knows what Sailor Moon is, since they have come out with a re-make of the series called Sailor moon Crystal (really good, also destroys your soul). Sailor moon is actually a middle school girl named Usagi, she becomes sailor moon when she meets a mysterious talking cat named Luna who fills her in on the past (Moon Kingdom and Such) she then meets along the way while fighting Queen Beryl and her 4 king servants, the other sailor scouts, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Venus. Sailor moon and her scouts are saved by Tuxedo Mask (mysterious beautiful guy) Who turns out to be a high schooler (If you go by crystal or university student in the original sailor moon) Sailor moon and Tuxedo mask fall in love like Endymion and Queen Serenity did many many many many years ago. Later on in the series you meet more sailor scouts and MANY more enemies that are trying to destroy the earth. I love this series and manga! Seriously send me a message and we can gush more about it! ( I have a Sailor Moon tattoo)
Inuyasha- This is another manga that like Sailor moon really set my manga love off. I watched, read, drew, and traded the trading cards (yes I still have them) with my friends in school. This is probably ALL we talked about during lunch and recess. Inuyasha is about a young girl named Kagome who is transported from modern japan to feudal Japan through a mysterious well that is on her parent’s property. When she is transported she meets a half human half demon named Inuyasha. They don’t quite see eye to eye at the beginning but feels start to develop between the two. The two and a bunch of friends (Sango my favourite character, Miroku, Shippo,) must stop a villain named Naraku from completing the shikon jewel that has been split into a bunch of pieces. This series is magical, funny, sad, and something I looked forward when I was younger watching it on TV on Friday nights. The series/ Anime has concluded unfortunately, but all good things must come to a close I guess. :\
MAR (Marchen Awakens Romance) This series is one of my absolute favourite, The fantasy world, the plot, the villains, the twists make me want to go home and re-read it for the hundredth time. The story is about a boy named Ginta who dreams about this magical world, his class mate’s jokes about him sleeping all the time. Gintas friend Koyuki is the only one who loves when Ginta talks about Mar. One day at school however someone opens up a portal to MAR and Ginta is transported to the world. He gathers a group of people to save Mar from the evil gang called the Chess pieces! They use special weapons called ARMS which a user summons different things such as water sprites, big wolf, magical weapons. I could go on and on about this series. It’s so good, the world is beautiful even with the villains about, the characters are amazing and each have a unique backstory. It’s hard not to get sucked into the world of MAR. The manga has concluded at 15 Volumes and I wish there was more!
Hellsing- Is a Dark series about Vampires, One of them being Alucard (Dracula Spelled Backwards) and an organization that deals with rogue vampires who are hurting humans and creating ghouls. Alucard saves (if making her a vampire is saving her) Seras Victoria. She joins this Organization called Hellsing, which is run by the strong willed Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing (long name) Integra is the last of the hellsing family and she is accompanied by her butler, Walter who is secretly a pro at fighting vampires.
Anyways the there is some strange going on and the vampires are no longer regular vampires and it’s up to the hellsing Organization to uncover the mystery. Lots of fights, tons of guns, a fight with a regenerator ;) can’t spoil what that is, Alucards AWESOME POWER, and Seras (who isn’t annoying, she’s cute and funny) and her strength to carry super heavy duty weapons. And you get to see Walter in battle some ghouls which is one of my favourite fighting scenes.
Amnesia- I don’t know if this is a manga series but since I’m talking about manga/anime series, I can’t help but gush about this short anime series. This series hit me hard, it was emotional series. This series hit me right in the gizzard, I balled pretty much every episode.
A young women (heroine) wakes up and can’t remember who she is or where she is, she however meets some men who seem to know her quite well. She meets a spirt only she can see named Orion, Orion and Heroine are trying to piece her memories that she lost. The more she learns the more the mystery grows and the strange circumstance surrounding her amnesia.
There are many more amazing Manga series out there at I have enjoyed, I have either forgotten to include them in my favourites list or they just weren’t my absolute favourites. I hope you decide to give some of these a shot. MAR might be hard to find since I had to specially order some of the books through different sellers on amazon. I love to talk about manga and anime so please share your favourites with me!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Upcoming Magic Expansion Features Alternate Art Version from Yoshitaka Amano and Others
Wizards of the Coast announced early this evening that they would be releasing Japanese alternate-art versions of all 36 planeswalker cards in their upcoming Magic: the Gathering expansion, War of the Spark, featuring illustrations from character designers like the legendary Yoshitaka Amano (Angel’s Egg, Vampire Hunter D, Final Fantasy) and Daisuke Izuka (Fire Emblem, GATE light novels).
According to Wizards of the Coast, these alternate art versions of the planeswalkers will appear exclusively in Japanese-language booster packs of War of the Spark, which will be distributed worldwide, and in Wizards Play Network promo packs for the Core Set 2020 season. Players hoping to find the alternative art in a Japanese booster pack will have a 50/50 chance of finding one, compared to the standard artwork.
The collection of new planeswalker art is headlined by Yoshitaka Amano’s rendition of Liliana, Dreadhorde General, a necromancer who is central to the storyline of War of the Spark, having betrayed her team of planeswalkers known as “the Gatewatch” shortly before the expansion’s storyline begins. Amano is famous for his work on the Final Fantasy series, but has been creating some of the most evocative art in the fantasy world since his career began in the early 1970s.
Liliana, Dreadhorde General by Yoshitaka Amano
This isn’t the first time that Magic has used Japanese artists or “anime-styled” artwork on their cards. In 2010, Wizards of the Coast released a limited run for a Japanese-language release of their Jace vs. Chandra duel deck featuring exclusive artwork from manga author Yoshino Himori.
Jace Beleren and Chandra Nalaar by Yoshino Himori
Hiromi had begun a manga adaptation of The Purifying Fire with the same name earlier that year in Dengeki-Maoh magazine, but even that wasn’t the start of Magic’s relationship with manga: that honor goes to Magic - Urza & Mishra, a December 2000 re-telling of Magic’s first major storyline, known as the Brother’s War.
Manga covers for Magic - Urza & Mishra and The Purifying Fire
More recently, Magic: the Gathering made waves in the manga world with a new series serialized in Kadokawa’s Monthly Shōnen Ace called Subete no Jinsei wo Sorera wa Saisei Dekinai, or “Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated.” The manga follows two Japanese teens in the ‘90s as they duel and trade with Magic cards, a different strategy from previous attempts to bring the Magic storyline itself to the medium that’s more in line with other card game adaptations like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Duel Masters.
Cover art for Destroy All Humanity. They Can’t Be Regenerated.
War of the Spark comes out worldwide on May 3rd, 2019. Which of the new planeswalker alternate art pieces do you like the best? Let us know in the comments!
