I feel rusty with digital now for only using markers for… what 2 weeks now… So I decided to experiment again instead of finish something that I already have. To be honest I wasn’t feeling any of the drawings that I started anyway. I wanted to try for a few days now to just put down a block of color and carve out/erase the drawing from it and the below reference from Der Verlorene had just the right amount of light and shadow for that.

Der Verlorene (1951)

A little appreciation for the set design of Dr. Rothe's laboratory. From my first viewing I was instantly drawn to how this looks and feels like an actual biology lab (and I should know, having spent many years working in them). I can practically smell the wood and paint of this place, and the mix of ethanol, glycerin, resin, solvent, stains, glue, blood, cigarettes or any other volatiles they happen to be working with that day. This is not your typical movie mad science of colorful bubbling flasks and random equipment of uncertain function, but a real space where actual experiments are conducted.

I dunno. This feels intensely familiar to me, somehow.

I scanned and uploaded the zine/program from Fiend in Wien: Peter Lorre’s 20th Century, the stage show by the World/Inferno Friendship Society which later became the album Addicted to Bad Ideas. It contains lyrics to all the songs, as well as notes about what was going on in Lorre’s life/the world around him during the time each song takes place. You can download the .pdf here.

(Note: the copy I have is a pretty low-quality Xerox, so even with some image correction on my part, the text on the inside and outside of the covers is a little difficult to read.)

Honestly, shoutout an den Typen, der vor x Jahren mal in unserem Wahlkreis für irgendeine Wahl für die Linken aufgestellt worden ist und bei der Podiumsdiskussion bei uns an der Schule neben Kubicki platziert worden war. Was unter anderem zu dem Highlight führte, dass Kubicki etwas sagen wollte, das Mikro nicht funktionierte, und nachdem unser technik-affiner Mitschüler zwanzig Sekunden lang an der Anlage rumgefummelt hatte, sagte besagter Linke-Kandidat nur schulterzuckend: "ach so, ja, das Mikro hab ich ausgemacht. Ich bin ja auch für Energiesparen und so."

Bei der folgenden "Probe-Wahl" innerhalb der anwesenden Jahrgänge hätte die Linke mit Abstand das Direktmandat erhalten.

I wish I could have been there with him, or could go back in time and tell him that yes, his efforts, his dream, matter to us to this day. That what he was trying to convey worked.

At the press conference, Lorre said he intended to return to the United States and make an American version of Der Verlorene, then come back to Germany in six months.
