James Duval in Nowhere (Gregg Araki, 1997)
Cast: James Duval, Rachel True, Nathan Bexton, Chiara Mastroianni, Debi Mazar, Kathleen Robertson, Joshua Gibran Mayweather, Jordan Ladd, Christina Applegate, Sarah Lassez, Guillermo Diaz, Jeremy Jordan, Alan Boyce, Jaason Simmons, Ryan Philippe, Heather Graham, Scott Caan, Thyme Lewis, Mena Suvari, Beverly D'Angelo, Charlotte Rae, Denise Richards, Teresa Hill, Kevin Light, Traci Lords, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, John Ritter, Christopher Knight, Eve Plumb, Lauren Tewes, David Leisure. Screenplay: Gregg Araki. Cinematography: Arturo Smith. Production design: Patti Podesta. Film editing: Gregg Araki.
I have taken the liberty of listing more cast members than usual just because Nowhere is a crowded movie, a throng of newcomers, future stars, familiar faces, and a few one-shots. It's a mess, but an intentional one, the chaotic culminating film of Gregg Araki's Teenage Apocalypse trilogy that began with Totally F***ed Up in 1993 and continued with The Doom Generation in 1995. Araki called it "Beverly Hills 90210 on acid," and that serves as well as anything to describe this freewheeling farrago of sex and drugs, as Araki puts a lot of Gen Xers and Millennials through hell. It's eye-bombing and ear-assaulting, and it contains a rape scene as well as a murder committed with a can of Campbell's Tomato Soup. In short, don't watch it unprepared.

RIP Dr. Ruth, Richard Simmons, and Shannen Doherty
I was on vacation and wanted to combine multiple deaths that occured during my getaway:
Remembering Dr. Ruth Westheimer 1928-2024
Sex therapist and talk show host Dr. Ruth has died at 96. She became an icon in the Reagan 80s for her frank discussion of sexuality, most notably on her TV talk show Dr. Ruth Westheimer  (Lifetime 1984-1991). She was a staple of TV talk shows in the 80s and was often imitated, including Mary Gross who played her on SNL. She appeared as a fictionalized version of herself in Electric Dreams, an episode of Moonlighting, and an episode of Melrose Place. Worth checking out is the 2019 documentary Ask Dr. Ruth directed by Ryan White (who I interviewed in 2022).
Tumblr media
Dr. Ruth as a guest on David Letterman in the 1980s.

Remembering Richard Simmons 1948-2024
Fitness guru Richard Simmons has died at 76. Of all TV aerobics instructors he was one of the biggest personalities. In the 1980s he had many fitness videos including "Sweatin' to the Oldies" and like Dr. Ruth, he was a frequent guest on talk shows. He appeared in a 1994 episode of SNL (in a Coffee Talk sketch) and Eddie Murphy portrayed Little Richard Simmons, a mashup impression of Simmons and Little Richard. Within pop culture, Simmons appeared in several movies and TV shows as a fictionalized version of himself on a number of shows including a 1985 episode of Amazing Stories and some episodes of Arrested Development. In recent years there have been podcasts about him and there's a biopic in the works with Pauly Shore set to play him.

Remembering Shannen Doherty 1971-2024
Sad news that actress Shannen Doherty died at 53 after a long battle with cancer. She was actually an early crush of mine circa late 80s. My favorite performances of hers were: Heather Duke in the 80s teen masterpiece Heathers, as Brendan Walsh on Fox's Beverly Hills, 90210 from 1990-1994, and as Rene in Kevin Smith's Mallrats. Smith's follow up to Clerks was a bigger budget movie and thanks to Doherty he had a big name star in it. When I met Smith in 1997, I had him sign my 1995 Film Threat with him and Doherty on the cover and he jokingly drew a mustache on her! I was a fan of the first 2 or 3 seasons of 90210, but it's really sad that since this teen show that was on when I was a teen, we've lost Luke Perry in 2019 and now Doherty (for the teen cast that is).
Tumblr media
Jason Lee and Doherty in Mallrats
She got her start as a child / teen actress. Early roles included voice acting in The Secret of NIMH, Night Shift (still my favorite Ron Howard movie), TV's Our House (NBC 1986-1988), and then the 90210 era. She played herself in an episode of Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, and she returned to the View Askewnaverse as herself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. She hosted SNL in 1993 with the great "Denise Show" sketch where Adam Sandler is pining for his ex played by Doherty.
Tumblr media
Alf and Doherty
In 1987 to promote NBC's Saturday Morning TV season, they had a promotional special Alf Loves a Mystery, with Alf trying to solve a mystery...with the help of NBC TV shows. Doherty, who was on Our House at the time, appeared as a The Lady in Red. After the passing of Alf's Benji Gregory and now Doherty, it's a tough week for Alf fans like me :(

Celebrating the people behind Kendall Square’s innovation ecosystem

Celebrating the people behind Kendall Square’s innovation ecosystem
Tumblr media
While it’s easy to be amazed by the constant drumbeat of innovations coming from Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, sometimes overlooked are the dedicated individuals working to make those scientific and technological breakthroughs a reality. Every day, people in the neighborhood tackle previously intractable problems and push the frontiers of their fields.
This year’s Kendall Square Association (KSA) Annual Meeting centered around celebrating the people behind the area’s prolific innovation ecosystem. That included a new slate of awards and recognitions for community members and a panel discussion featuring MIT President Sally Kornbluth.
“It’s truly inspiring to be surrounded by all of you: people who seem to share an exuberant curiosity, a pervasive ethic of service, and the baseline expectation that we’re all interested in impact — in making a difference for people and the planet,” Kornbluth said.
The gathering took place in MIT’s Walker Memorial (Building 50) on Memorial Drive and attracted entrepreneurs, life science workers, local students, restaurant and retail shop owners, and leaders of nonprofits.
The KSA itself is a nonprofit organization made up of over 150 organizations across the greater Kendall Square region, from large companies to universities like MIT and Harvard, along with the independent shops and restaurants that give Kendall Square its distinct character.
New to this year’s event were two Founder Awards, which were given to Sangeeta Bhatia, the the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, and Michal Preminger, head of Johnson and Johnson Innovation, for their work bringing people together to achieve hard things that benefit humanity.
The KSA will donate $2,500 to the Science Club for Girls in Bhatia’s honor and $2,500 to Innovators for Purpose in honor of Preminger.
Recognition was also given to Alex Cheung of the Cambridge Innovation Center and Shazia Mir of LabCentral for their work bringing Kendall Square’s community members together.
Cambridge Mayor Denise Simmons also spoke at the event, noting the vital role the Kendall Square community has played in things like Covid-19 vaccine development and in the fight against climate change.
“As many of you know, Cambridge has a long and proud history of innovation, with the presence of MIT and the remarkable growth of the tech and life science industry examples of that,” Simons said. “We are leaving a lasting, positive impact in our city. This community has made and continues to make enormous contributions, not just to our city but to the world.”
In her talk, Kornbluth also introduced the Kendall Square community to her plans for The Climate Project at MIT, which is designed to focus the Institute’s talent and resources to achieve real-world impact on climate change faster. The project will provide funding and catalyze partnerships around six climate “missions,” or broad areas where MIT researchers will seek to identify gaps in the global climate response that MIT can help fill.
“The Climate Project is a whole-of-MIT mobilization that’s mission driven, solution focused, and outward looking,” Kornbluth explained. “If you want to make progress, faster and at scale, that’s the way!”
After mingling with Kendall community members, Kornbluth said she still considers herself a newbie to the area but is coming to see the success of Kendall Square and MIT as more than a coincidence.
“The more time I spend here, the more I come to understand the incredible synergies between MIT and Kendall Square,” Kornbluth said. “We know, for example, that proximity is an essential ingredient in our collective and distinctive recipe for impact. That proximity, and the cross-fertilization that comes with it, helps us churn out new technologies and patents, found startups, and course-correct our work as we try to keep pace with the world’s challenges. We can’t do any of this separately. Our work together — all of us in this thriving, wildly entrepreneurial community — is what drives the success of our innovation ecosystem.”

I do miss the Editable Reblogs feature of Xkit.
What did you have for dinner tonight? It's 6:29am. The plan is two hotdogs from my girlfriend's work party.
If you were given a million dollars, what would you spend it on? Probably get a new electric or hybrid car, and do something about my girlfriend's debts. The rest would go in the bank.
Have you ever cried in front of your parents over a boyfriend or girlfriend? Likely. My mother's reaction was "grow up", to which I pointed out that since I was 17 I was very much acting age-appropriate.
What does your bedroom smell like right now? I don't want to figure it out. First thing in the morning two hot bodies breathing overnight raises the temperature to humid.
Have you ever shaved off your eyebrow before? Yes, actually. There was the time my grandmother noticed I trimmed my eyelashes, but no one said a word about my brows.
Do you want to have a boy or girl whenever you have kids? I don't want children.
You're pregnant with twins: What do you name them? This happened years ago, and the names were David and Clarissa.
Describe your outfit. Stark freaking naked right now.
What gigabyte is your memory card? Which one? The camera is half a gig. The phone is 32gb.
What brand is your digital camera? Kodak.
When was the last time you hung out with your best friend? Last year. He says he wants to come over here but doesn't trust his car, plus has a financial incentive to wait until the second half of August, so it'll be a little while.
What is a movie you're waiting to see? I don't really care about movies presently, but my girlfriend passed me the trailer to a movie about Santa Claus (played by JK Simmons) getting kidnapped which might be interesting.
Who was the last person to cook something for you? Tanya.
Do you ever sit and think What If about something? On the daily.
If so, what is it? I have a list.
What’s on tv right now? I would not know this. I don't have a television.
Do you ever stop and smell the roses? I do try.
Where do you download music from? Mostly from SoulSeek, though the occasional YouTube-to-MP3 site fills in some gaps.
How many channels do you have on your tv? No TV.
What are you most scared of? "Stupid people in large groups", said George Carlin. The orange menace to democracy and his fascist followers.
If you were given a chance to bring someone back to life, who would you choose? Sam Kinison.
Do you talk to any of your ex-boyfriend/girlfriend? I'm still tight with my ex, but have nothing to do with any of the former girlfriends after her. I used to stay in contact with old girlfriends from my youth but time has passed.
If so, which one? Asked and answered.
What is your mom doing right now? Hell if I know, she's four hours away. But probably having breakfast because she's an early riser.
Are you currently listening to music? No.
What is the weather like right now? Looked okay at 5am, but it will likely rain a bit later.
Do you like new music or older music? Older music since there hasn't been much good music put out there since the 1990s. Also, get off my lawn.
If you could make a law, what would kind of law would you make? I'd break the double-standard about showing breasts in America. The nation would be a happier place if everyone could get their tits out.
What was the last video game you played? Not really sure, it's been awhile. But in other news, the writer of H.E.R.O. for the Atari 2600 has written a new 2600 game which went on sale about a week ago. Money's tight until after July 2 and then I go on a road trip so can't spend much yet.
What is currently going on in the room you're in right now? I'm writing this reply. Girlfriend left for work an hour and a half ago. Nothing else is possible.
Do you know where your best friend is? He's probably in bed dreaming about gay porn.
Who was the last person to comment you on Facebook? I'd have to look. [looking] A woman by the name of Denise, who spoke of watching a movie that she read about in Penthouse.
What is your display picture of on Facebook? The keyboard of a 1917 Underwood #5 typewriter.
Do you ever sit and think about the past? Nearly nonstop.
If you could relive any moment in time: what would it be? The one my mind always goes to was from when I was 13 and the opportunity for something great came up but I didn't know how to approach it so squandered the chance.
Are you a talker or a listener? Definitely more of a listener.
What is one food you will not eat? I am not fond of strawberries or raspberries.
Do you eat anything now that you never used to eat? Quite a few things. Our perceptions of food are formed by what we were served by our parents, and there was a lot they didn't touch.
Have you ever kissed the same sex? Once. That's how I know I am straight, I was pretty wigged out.
When does school start this year? It just got out. Leave them kids alone!
Do you ever shout for absolutely no reason? You're talking about parents and siblings.
Have you stuck with your new years resolution? I didn't really make one this year.
Do you need to lose any weight right now? Yeah. Which circles back to my new years resolution I didn't make.
What is something you want right now? To be asleep and not have to go to work today. Neither of those are possible. So I will settle for some dirty pictures after I post this.
Do you hate when you see teachers in stores? Actually I like it since I've been out of school for decades.
What always puts a smile on your face? Boobies. Ante up, I need a grin this morning.
Where can I find you on a Saturday night? Wherever I happen to go, or right here at home.
What is the best thing about Sundays? My weekend has started.
What is your music provider (itunes, windows media player)? My MP3 players.
How many songs do you have? On the USB thumbdrive in the car, 1200. On my hard drive, no idea but it's probably like ten thousand.
When was the last time you had a period? As a guy, I have never had one.
Why do you think the sky is blue? Diffraction of light.
If you could change the sky to any color, which would you choose? Blue is fine, with the occasional purple to keep people's attention.
Is there anything wrong with you right now? Sometimes I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go, but most of the time I've got a place to be and nothing to wear.
Do you hate when people stare at you? I do tricks when that happens, it's what they're waiting for... right?

Shared a unedited sneak peak to Instagram and you get one too 🖤
"A missing person was reported to the authorities late last night. Eliza Abbott, 17, of Stoneview, Michigan, was housesitting on Tuesday the 21st of February in Lakeville, just fiffeen minutes from her home. Authorities claim she called her mother, Victoria Soutas, complaining of quote, "a man banging on the front door". She told her mother that she was hiding in the bathroom, but when Soutas and her husband, Eliza's stepfather, Daniel Soutas, arrived, she was nowhere to be found. When the police arrived to the scene, they reported the door had been broken into, likely with a crowbar. Abbott's phone, found in the first story bathroom, and broken glass on the kitchen floor, suggests foul play. The two dogs Abbott was with were missing from the property, as well, but have since been found. The owners, Marty and Denise Carlton, have yet to comment. Abbott was reported last wearing blue jeans, a dark purple t shirt, a gray sweater, and black tennis shoes. If you have any information on this case or you've seen her, please contact the number on your screen. Now, here's Craig Simmons with the weather."
