Mad Season - Long Gone Day, from “Above” album, released on March 14, 1995
[Verse 1: Mark Lanegan] So much blood I'm starting to drown Runs from cold to colder Time to time the sky's comin' down To help me lose my way Tears and lies for answers You and open veins, God knows I'm gone Girl I just want you to come on down Lord it's a storm in my head and I fall These sins are mine and I've done wrong, oh babe Come on down Come on down my babe, wrong time I know
[Chorus: Layne Staley &Mark Lanegan] Long gone day (Woah, woah-oh yeah) Who ever said we'd wash away with the rain?
[Verse 2: Layne Staley] See you all from time to time Isn't it so strange how far away we all are now? Am I the only one who remembers that summer? Oh-woah, I remember Everyday each time the place was saved The music that we made The wind has carried all of that away
[Chorus: Layne Staley] Long gone day Who ever said we'd wash away with the rain?
[Saxophone Solo]
[Verse 3: Mark Lanegan] So many tears I'm starting to drown The rain in heaven's all come down Silver spoons affix the crown The luckless ones are broken Fears and lies for answers You and open flames God knows I'm gone And I just want you to Come on down Lord it's a storm in my head and I fall These sins are mine and I've done wrong I want you to, oh, I just want you to Come on down
[Saxophone Solo]
[Outro: Layne Staley] I fear again, like then, I've lost my way And shout to God to bring my sunny day
💬 Fabiola Gonzalez: “This brought tears to my eyes remembering that summer of '89 when we were young and innocent and free. Layne and Demri and I walking through the long grasses on the trails of Magnuson Park, heading to meet up with El Steiner, Freedom James, Krisha, Jerry, Betzol, Demitri and others. Demri carrying her conga drum with a scarf wrapped around it, me a bottle and a stick. Layne's hair half in dreads and curls with his goatee braided and one of my beads dangling on the end of it. He wearing ripped up jean shorts and Dem and I in our bikinis. His and Demri's chests bare and golden from the sun, sparkles in our eyes and smiles, lots of smiles...we were going to worship, have a drum circle with our friends on the shores of Lake Washington and swim in it's waters on a hot summer day. That day Layne experienced the Soundgarden for the first time, when you could walk up to it and stand in the middle and listen to the the wind channel sound through the tubes, creating the most beautifully haunting, mystical music. Melancholy years later when he wrote the lyrics, he and Dem were on troubled waters and I in Eastern Washington pregnant with my twins. It was so strange how far away we all were then, and I remember, like Layne, that summer and to this day, like he, I SHOUT to God to bring back my sunny day. It still hurts and I treasure that he wrote those lyrics and mentioned me and friends on the album, for the inspiration of his words and the memory of such a special time. A Long Gone Day.” The music that we made / The wind has carried all of that away I fear again, like then I’ve lost my way / And shout to God to bring my sunny day

1992 - Demri Parrott (R) and Fabiola Gonzalez by Cliff Feulner in Arlington (WA).
For this particular photoshot, Fabiola remembers:  “It was her who brought us to this location for a shoot. She wanted farmlands and horses, and piggies, and dirt roads aligned with wild flowers. Her vision totally. Her memories of her childhood.“

Alice in Chains - Died, from "Music Bank" album, released on October 26, 1999
[Verse 1] I could climb until I reach where angels reside Ask around to find out where the junkies applied You just up and left me on this rock all alone It's my fault for knowing not what I should have known
[Chorus] Oh, oh, oh My heart is dried up beating slow Oh, oh It's been deflating since you died Since you died You died
[Verse 2] I could drop until I touch the sinister side Visit all attractions flippin' back and aside Still you leave me rotting on this rock all alone It's my fault for knowing not what I should have known
[Chorus] Oh, oh, oh My heart is dried up beating slow Oh, oh It's been deflating since you died Since you died You died
[Chorus] Oh, oh, oh My heart is dried up beating slow Oh, oh It's been deflating since you died Since you died You died
[Verse 3] I could climb until I reach where angels reside I could drop until I touch the sinister side
[Chorus] Oh, oh My heart is dried up beating slow Uh, oh It's been deflating since you died Since you died You died Died You died Died You died
--
The last song Layne Staley ever recorded with Alice in Chains, “Died” describes the agony and devastation he feels about the loss of someone.
It was likely about his ex-fiancée Demri Parrott. After the two had broken up, she died of an overdose in 1996 after being clean for 2 years.

Demri Lara Parrott, the on and off girlfriend and ex fiancee of Layne Staley, the muse and inspiration for Alice In Chains songs such as, Love, Hate, Love, and Died.
Demri and Layne were often described as soulmates, but their relationship would soon be torn with heroin addiction, infidelity, and prostitution. Demri died in 1996, a guilt and grief ridden Staley said to a friend that he wished he had taken her out of the Seattle scene to get her away from the drugs, and according to many people, Layne never forgave himself for not taking Demri out of the toxic environment that she was in. Though they were broken up at the time, the pair very much cared for one another and had a good friendship. Layne would follow Demri six years later.

The TRUTH about Demri Lara Parrott~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many nasty rumors and assumptions have been made about Layne Staley’s relationship with his former fiancé and muse, Demri Lara Parrott. However, a friend of both of their’s, Amber Ferrano stated Demri was not the monster people have painted her to be in a series of comments on an Instagram fan account [laynestaley.aic.forever] i can post the full comments if you’d like in a separate post, just let me know!
Amber said of the rumors/badmouthing on Demri: “It started after she died. I know who started it and they know too, but it’s funny I read stuff from people who make a statement as if they were there, knew her and it was fact and people believe them. If it’s coming from someone not in her obit. or living in Seattle it’s probably not true and can certainly be verified through one of them.”
A popular rumor is that Demri was the one who introduced Layne to heroin, but in reality, Amber Ferrano confirmed as a friend to both of them “She [Demri] did not use heroin until with him.” Layne was actually around drugs constantly due to the rocker lifestyle, and his dabbling in drugs started before her. “Demri did not get Layne started in drugs his history was prior to her and tons of people know that. One of the bands working relationship was the biggest dealer in town.”
Another thing Amber said that really hit me was “Demri’s first stop after getting out of the hospital where she would be for weeks or months on end i.e. CLEAN would be to try to help Layne kick.” Demri Loved Layne so much. It’s about time people stop assuming everything they read written by people who were not there.
Many also falsely claimed that Demri was only interested in Layne for the money or fame, but in fact, she began dating Layne when he was completely broke before Alice In Chains was even signed a record deal. Once Alice In Chains became famous, Demri actually HATED being referred to as “Layne’s girlfriend” and just wanted to be known as/called Demri. Amber also went on to say that as a friend, she “loved Layne, but he did not treat her [Demri] right...He died because he wished he had done right by the one person he knew for sure loved him for the poor butt rocker he was when he met her and he’d be the [first] to admit it.”
By this quote alone, it’s clear that Amber thought that it was the guilt following Demri’s passing that Layne harbored that really pushed him over the edge, and those close to him around the time of Demri’s death shared this sentiment. Layne was beyond devastated by Demri’s death, which makes sense if he blamed himself for getting her into the heroin that tragically killed her. It was rumored that he even asked Demri’s mom for a teddy bear of Demri’s to keep after she passed that was found in his apartment years later when he passed away. I encourage people to not believe the things written by anonymous people or “fans” who think they know what happened out of respect for Layne, Demri, and their surviving loved ones. Rest In Peace to both beautiful souls 💜

Demri by Jack Plasky, at her apartment, unknown exact date.
💬 Jack Plasky: “Demri was beautiful, and proud of her body. Once she created (lightning fast) her little set to work in, those clothes came flying off. I tried asking her questions ... but I could not get the words out, and grabbed my camera and started shooting. When we shot, we never talked about what we wanted to achieve, but at the end we both got what we wanted. We were one.
