#OTD in Irish History | 17 May:
1650 – Oliver Cromwell’s army is defeated in the second assault on Clonmel, suffering its heaviest losses. The following day, the Mayor of Clonmel negotiates honourable terms for surrender with Cromwell, who did not realise that O’Neill and his soldiers had left the town. Annoyed at being outwitted, Cromwell nevertheless keeps to the terms. 1730 – Elizabeth, widow of William Molyneux, marries…

On The Jukebox: Trevor Horn - "Echoes: Ancient And Modern"
Tumblr media
Bit of a different spin on a covers album as it's been put together by a producer, not an individual artist. As such, the album features a variety of vocalists. This feels very much like a "not to everyone's taste" kinda project and the reviews have been all over the place. Track listing as follows:
Tori Amos - "Swimming Pool (Drank)" (originally performed by Kendrick Lamar)
Seal - "Steppin' Out" (originally performed by Joe Jackson)
Rick Astley - "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" (originally performed by Yes)
Lady Blackbird - "Slave To The Rhythm" (originally performed by Grace Jones)
Marc Almond - "Love Is A Battlefield" (originally performed by Pat Benatar)
Iggy Pop and Lambrini Girls - "Personal Jesus" (originally performed by Depeche Mode)
Steve Hogarth - "Drive" (originally performed by The Cars)
Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp - "Relax" (originally performed by Frankie Goes To Hollywood)
Andrea Corr and Jake Lukeman - "White Wedding" (originally performed by Billy Idol)
Jack Lukeman - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (originally performed by Nirvana"
Trevor Horn - "Avalon" (originally performed by Roxy Music)

Debated about this one, but Quest For Camelot! 🗡 👀
YESSS YESSSSSSS
A deeply flawed and cringy movie that I love anyway for 2 reasons: 1) bangin music (Andrea Corr! Celine Dion! Bryan White! And OMG I FORGOT THAT WAS GARY OLDMAN) and 2) solid 90s girlboss romance.
The Corrs were my musical universe in high school and this is where it started. Andrea Corr's voice is just silky-smooth and the blending of traditional Irish sounds with carefree pop (which I now understand to be a wild juxtaposition given how depression is like a national sport in Ireland) just WORKED in a pre-9/11 world. Celine was hot off of her Titanic dominance, and WB Animation had figured out that music was the key to competing with Disney (hence Cats Don't Dance around the same time).
I loved Garrett as a blind romantic hero and thought his romance with Kaylee was adorable, even if it happened over the course of one (AMAZING) song. And she ultimately used what he taught her in order to defeat Ruber!
I hated the dragons but eh. They're pretty typical of the time period, too (like the gargoyles in Hunchback, EW). Thanks for asking!

Quest for Camelot (1998)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Quest for Camelot has one quick strobe of lightning during a comedic musical number, interrupting a moment in an imaginary courtroom. The strobe only lasts about half a second, but is quite severe.
There is a brief moment where the camera does several fast rolls forward, and there are moments of peril at extreme heights.
Flashing Lights: 4/10. Motion Sickness: 2/10.

I think paranormal experiences are very personal, again, if they are that. Yes, sometimes I've felt that some things I would personally believe enough for me to take action on it... like, you know, I felt something happen in a hotel once that made me never stay there again. - Andrea Corr
