While we’re out here holding space for the lyrics of Defying Gravity, can we talk about the chilling lyric change the movie made when the citizens of Oz are yelling at Elphaba?
At first I thought I just didn’t remember the song correctly, but I looked it up on Spotify and sure enough in the musical version sung by Idina Menzel, the villagers yell: “LOOK AT HER, SHE’S WICKED. GET HER!”
But in the movie version, they yell: “LOOK AT HER, SHE’S WICKED! KILL HER!”
And it’s yelled so clearly and violently too. They are not shying away from setting up how dark they’ll go in part 2, I’ll tell you that.
#I better see the Wizard GROVELING AND IN TEARS I WILL ACCEPT NOTHING LESS#YOU HAD AN ENTIRE NATION OF PEOPLE CHANTING FOR THE DEATH OF YOUR CHILD YOU WILL LIVE WITH THAT#Not chanting to stop her. “Sometimes I dream about you. I memorize every detail of your face like a prayer. Those moments seem so real that I grieve whenever I wake up and your spot next to me is cold. Why did you beg me to kill you? I would’ve stopped. Even in death I cannot escape you. I’m not sure I want to even if I was begging for it.”
w/ @kashisun !! (happy birthday 😭)

hello i am just not over the fact that rio left her there to bury their son by herself. just left her there. i know she had to take nicky, i know that the walk of death can't be short, but why didn't she come back. she had all night. rio had all night. why didn't she come back. agatha is stubborn and will hold a grudge, a death of a child can tear apart the strongest of relationships, but she could've helped dig the grave. she could have held her. she could have been there.
#i will defend both of them until the end of my days#but that was cold#even for death#agatha all along#agatha harkness#rio vidal#agathario#agatha x rio#agatha all along spoilers#easton speaks#to love her so completely#to demand to be loved again#to be pining after her#and she left her alone to dig their sons grave#i don't know how close i would be to forgiveness either#rio didn't want to face the consequences of what she had to do

Been a couple of years, but I still think fondly of Grace Monroe from Infinity Train for achieving that very rare redemption arc narrative of "the people you hurt are allowed to sever all ties, and you can still become a better, happier person."
#grace monroe#grace infinity train#infinity train#in a sea of demands that you must always forgive the people who hurt you no matter what#it was nice to see a plot that gave good weight to feelings and motivations on both side of the equation#hm.#come to think of it#it seems a lot of redemption arcs usually go the route#of redemption through death#or very quick if not immediate acceptance into team the people you traumatized#much more rare to see a redemption arc#where the one on the journey to redemption has to accept that at least some people they've hurt can't or won't forgive them#but that this doesn't automatically mean they can't become a kinder person#hell in grace's case it was pretty shocking/refreshing to see that it was precisely because someone set a hard no-contact boundary with her#that she lost someone she loved but still hurt#which really forced her to reconsider what she was doing#it was a true 'oh no not the quencies' kind of story#but also a 'you will accept the quencies and go forward with your life & hard gained knowledge' narrative#redemption arcs

there's an essay jumbled up in my brain about dunmeshi's beginning and how clever and deceptive it is as a sleight-of-hand trick that distracts the audience from the depth and scope of the worldbuilding and foreshadowing that's being set up the entire time by dangling zany characters and wacky dishes and biology fun facts in front of us, and how that serves to catch invested viewers off guard when those elements come to the forefront, but also how it works against it with other viewers wanting "more" and not seeing it because the plot bait isn't laid out up front
how people getting frustrated with the characters "not taking things seriously" is mirrored and refuted in the confrontation between Laios and Shuro. how the characters' attitudes aren't just a result of shallow low-stakes "comedy rules" where nothing matters, but are an extension of their personalities (Laios's nonstandard expression of emotions being offputting even to people he knows) and the world and social environment (adventurers being desensitized to death and injury because resurrection magic is commonplace). the way the party refers to "saving Falin" instead of "retrieving Falin's corpse," indicating that they still see her with full personhood, and how that phrasing leads to some readers/viewers believing that Falin is alive in the dragon's stomach, conscious of being slowly digested while the party carelessly fucks around "wasting time." how the weird tonal dissonance makes sense in-universe and yet is deliberately challenged more and more the deeper the party goes
all the character building and pieces of lore slowly weaving together the shape of the larger world, laying the groundwork for the major themes that will surface later. so much is right there in the "low-stakes" early episodes if you know what you're looking for (or pass the perception checks).
it can be so satisfying to see new viewers/readers pick up on the clues even in the earliest "simple" episodes, or notice new things and make connections yourself....and it can also be frustrating to see people dismiss oddities and dissonance as shallow or bad writing because they don't expect a "cooking anime" to have depth like that. why try to question and understand and peel back the layers when you don't expect there to be any layers?
why can't laios take things seriously for once?
#mypost#i'm majorly out of practice for doing any real critical cohesive writing lol#trying to put this into coherent words has been such a mess so here's a vague gesture at my thought process about it#it's both my favorite and the most frustrating thing to see#because i've seen SO MANY people say they dropped the show after a couple eps thinking they know what it's about and where it's going#a cute but ultimately unsustainable gimmick#people for whom the characters and the food/biology infodumping weren't enough of a hook#but i wouldn't change anything about the structure to put a more obvious plot hook in the beginning#because it would give the game away TOO much#i LOVE how the audience has to acclimate to the characters' attitudes about death#only for our assumption that it's all normal and fine in this world to be thrown back in our faces#how we're left to notice the winged lion appearing in statues and carvings and coins and armor in the background#long long before it's ever brought up as a real entity by the plot#the history of the kingdom laid out in plain view but nevermind that. magic painting food!#i've seen the language around falin and her resurrection cause so much confusion#but of COURSE the characters involved wouldn't directly say 'we need to get her corpse to revive it'#bc pragmatically they already understand that as their goal. it doesn't need to be stated out loud; it's just how this process works.#but also they don't SEE her as an object. a dead body.#they need to 'save her before she's digested.' 'the spell couldn't reach her in the dragon's stomach.' 'hang in there falin'#death isn't real to them. not really. and so it doesn't quite feel real to the audience either#not until they find her skull and that realization slams home#like......i keep comparing it to gravity falls#which is episodic and goofy in the beginning but also has a much more obvious plot hook to keep people interested#(a main character entering a secret bunker indicating that he's lying about his ignorance of the town's mysteries)#the main characters in gravity falls are AWARE that there is a mystery to be solved and are trying to find more information#but i don't think that approach would work as well for dm!#laios's goals were never that lofty. not until they HAD to be because the situation demanded it of him#it's the characters trying to solve one personal problem and finding themselves entrenched in something vast and dramatic#that they weren't even fully AWARE of when they set out. and we the audience are on that journey with them!#it's SUCH a good structure i wouldn't trade it for anything. but also. tragic to see people give up and dismiss it so fast.

Me, looking at my Reverse!Robins timeline: “Steph probably doesn’t get her teen pregnancy story in this verse, because it ties weird knots around Tim taking up her mantle. Also because she joins the family much earlier, both as Damian’s apprentice & Bruce’s foster daughter, so she probably would not end up in the same situation to begin with. She also probably wouldn’t have had to give the kid up, because the family would be supporting Steph 1000%, giving her an incredibly stable & reliable support network to give her daughter the best possible life.”
Also me: *starts to write out the ear infection incident, has Jason call Steph “mom,” and Steph’s whole brain shuts down wondering whether this is what motherhood is actually like, how things would’ve gone different if she’d kept her kid instead*
Me, frustrated: “Where does that even fit in the timeline?! There’s no room for a pregnancy plot!”
#I am… also now considering the implications of Steph having her daughter and leaving said daughter behind.Would Crystal demand custody after#Steph’s death or would she see the Waynes as being the best chance the baby had for a good life? How does each member of the family react t#the baby after Steph is gone? How does Steph feel when she comes back and sees her little girl already walking & talking?#OH FUCK#AM I SERIOUSLY GOING TO MAKE STEPHANE BROWN’S UNNAMED DAUGHTER INTO A MAJOR POINT OF IMPORTANCE HERE?!?!#(Jokes on all of us; I genuinely have no idea.)#The main thing I know comes of this is that Steph starts calling Jason ‘baby’ when she’s worried about him.#//#reverse robins#reverse!robins#Reverse Robins au#reverse batkids#reverse batfam#reverse order batkde#Reverse batfamily#Stephanie brown#Steph brown#stephanie brown’s baby#Stephanie brown’s daughter#Batfam#batfamily#bat fam#bat family#Rh!steph#Red hood steph#Red hood!steph#Red hood Stephanie brown#Red hood!stephanie brown#my writing#mine

I firmly believe locke and celes would've been absolutely perfect if they'd been just a little more toxic
#you cant tell me celes would accept locke so easily after being treated like the other woman to a dead girl#i wanted to see some petty jealousy mind games type of drama#locke needed time to accept rachel's death but making celes feel like she was his backup gf made him deserving of some retaliation 😤 cmon#she should've had him groveling at her feet for her to take him back 😤😤#there was too much one-sidedness on celes' side for it to feel genuine on locke's end yknow what i mean?#give me that pining from the opera scene but let celes intentionally taunt him#celes has enough and threatens to move on and idk bone edgar or smth and locke gets to feel shitty#bc he has no right to demand for her to be faithful as long as rachel is in the picture and yet it drives him nuts with jealousy#yknow?? YKNOW?????#let celes be petty and rightfully fed up!!!#she wouldnt be proud of it and might even hate herself for stooping so low but she sure feels vindicated when locke gets all pent up over i#final fantasy vi#celes chere#locke cole#celocke#man i wish i was a fic writer

anyway a friend and i watched the cam/chase engagement episode last night and holy shiiiit it's so messy, i know it's messy but i rewatch and go CHASE. NO. RUNNNN
she ghosts him, and promises she has a super good reason for it when he asks, and asks him to trust her. chase, who has the self esteem of a sea sponge, agrees. she then continues to ghost him. chase says ok, i am getting legit upset by this, i need you to tell me what's going on now. cameron refuses. he dumps her ass.
cameron finds him and tells him: lol actually i was ghosting you because i found out you wanted to propose and i hated that :) FOR SOME REASON chase does not seem comforted to know the woman he wants to marry was so freaked out by this that she ghosted him!! weird!! cameron DOES NOT apologize. instead she says she's ready for him to propose now uwu. chase, who has a backbone made of wet tissue paper, is like you??? want me to propose??? after i dumped you???? for ghosting me???? cameron: yes :) AND THEN HE DOES???
#and we wonder why the marriage lasted 4 months lmao#the episode is clearly on cameron's side; it's all her pov and her sad faces and she's meant to be sympathetic#and actually her REAL reason is sympathetic#she's afraid not of getting married but afraid chase doesn't mean it and is reacting to kutner's death#she's afraid he'll do it and regret it#but she doesn't SAY this TO HIM#she instead is a huge bitch and then demands he propose sdfsdf#terrible writing#i do adore cameron but god damn#malpractice posting

antigone. jean anouilh.
quotations from antigone: a tragedy by jean anouilh. translated by lewis galantière.
comic panels in order are from: battle for the cowl 3 (x3), batman annual 25, batman and robin 5, batman and robin 6, battle for the cowl 3, batman 416, battle for the cowl 3, battle for the cowl 2, batman annual 25, batman and robin 6, under the red hood, battle for the cowl 3 (x2), batman 427, lost days 5.
#jason todd#anyway mmmm still turning it over in my mind BUT#antigone + her sense of principle such that she's willing to take her confrontation with creon to its logical extreme#she knows he'll kill her & it's not that she welcomes it but there's that sense of fatality: she's more tied to the dead than the living#she's basically daring creon to have her excuted in the same way that jason is challenging bruce#jason demanding the mourning for his own corpse. antigone buries her brother but jason is the avenging unburied ghost#come to DEMAND burial. and yet he's also alive so he's also antigone who has a choice - or does he???#and then dick's got his own antigone side re:principle but in this fight he's sister ismene#ismene determined to stop antigone from getting herself killed but also angry with her#and feeling like if she would just LISTEN then she'd see that ismene is right and sensible and has all order on her side#to her everything that antigone wants sounds like chaos and the breakdown of order#and that mmm i feel like there's this consistent thread where we kinda dance around the question of well. /is/ jason suicidal#he puts a gun to his head. he lets go of the train. and yet back then as a kid he wanted to live so badly!#again like antigone who seems to be hurtling herself toward death and yet it's not really what she wants and yet and yet#anyway many thoughts still much confused but. we'll see.#my comic art but we are using the term ''art'' loosely#since it's literally just copy-pasted comic panels with. like. bad highlighting occasionally sfdsfds#dick grayson

"The feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist being appointed as the day upon which the coronation of the king [Edward V] would take place without fail, all both hoped for and expected a season of prosperity for the kingdom."
— Excerpt from the Croyland Continuator / David Horspool, Richard III: A Ruler and Reputation
Even though Edward IV’s death was unexpected, after twelve years of peace there need not have been too much of a sense of foreboding about the succession. The great dynastic wound from which the Wars of the Roses had grown had not so much been healed as cauterized by the extinction of the House of Lancaster. There was no rush for London, as had happened in earlier, disputed successions. The royal party didn’t set out from Ludlow for ten days after hearing the news of Edward IV’s death, while Richard took his time, too. And the new king had [his mother the dowager queen and] two uncles to support him: his mother’s brother, the sophisticated, cultured, highly experienced Earl Rivers; and his father’s, the loyal and reliable Duke of Gloucester, to whom Edward IV had entrusted unprecedented power and vital military command.
... [Richard of Gloucester] had achieved his goal by a mixture of luck and ruthlessness, and if he made it appear, or even believed himself, that destiny played a part, this only made him a man in step with his times. Modern historians have no time for destiny, but sometimes the more ‘structuralist’ interpretations of the events surrounding the usurpation can come close to it. When we read that ‘the chances of preserving an unchallenged succession were . . . weakened by the estrangement of many of the rank-and-file nobility from . . . high politics, which was partly a consequence of the Wars of the Roses and partly of Edward IV’s own policies’, it is hard not to conclude that an unforeseeable turn of events is being recast as a predictable one. But without one overriding factor – the actions of Richard, Duke of Gloucester after he took the decision to make himself King Richard III – none of this could have happened. That is, when the same author concedes ‘Nor can we discount Richard’s own forceful character’, he is pitching it rather low*.
Edward IV had not left behind a factional fault line waiting to be shaken apart. Richard of Gloucester’s decision to usurp was a political earthquake that could not have been forecast on 9 April, when Edward died. After all, Simon Stallworth did not even anticipate it on 21 June, the day before Richard went public. We should be wary of allowing hindsight to give us more clairvoyance than the well-informed contemporary who had no idea ‘what schall happyne’. This is not to argue that Richard’s will alone allowed him to take the Crown. Clearly, the circumstances of a minority, the existence of powerful magnates with access to private forces, and the reasonably recent examples of resorts to violence and deposition of kings, made Richard’s path a more conceivable one. But Richard’s own tactics, his arrest of Rivers, Vaughan and Grey, the rounding up of Hastings and the bishops, relied on surprise. If men as close as these to the workings of high politics at a delicate juncture had no inkling of what might happen, the least historians can do is to reflect that uncertainty [...].
(*The author who Horspool is referencing and disagreeing with is Charles Ross)
#wars of the roses#edward v#richard iii#edward iv#my post#I'm writing a post on this topic but I have no idea when I'll finish it so I figured I should post Horspool's epic analysis#or should I say epic takedown? <3#friendly reminder that Richard's usurpation happened primarily and decidedly because of Richard's own decisions and actions#we need to stop downplaying his singular agency and accountability by casting the blame on others#most of all Elizabeth Woodville and her family but also the bizarre interpretation of historians like Ross and Pollard (et al)#who somehow hold Edward more responsible (through a 'structuralist' view as Horspool says) even though that literally makes no sense#also friendly reminder that actual contemporaries did not view Edward V's minority as a sign of worry and potential discontent#quite the opposite - they expected him to have a prosperous reign. which made sense since Edward IV left his son a far more stable#country than any former minor king (and most other adult kings tbh). The irony is that it was his son's usurper who benefitted from it.#also I added Elizabeth Woodville to the list because Edward V himself specifically said that he trusted the governance of the country#'to the peers of the realm and the queen' as quoted by Mancini (likely relayed to him by John Argentine)#and this is supported by evidence. After Edward's death the Croyland Continuator substitutes Elizabeth's role in the council#for that of the King: 'the counsellors of the king now deceased were present with the queen'#we know Elizabeth presided over all the council's decisions and initiated proposals (the size of her son's military escort) on her own#She was clearly the one with the most authority in the council (who were described as being present with *her* not anyone else)#Hastings made demands but he couldn't enforce them at all (and was in fact worried). It was clearly Elizabeth who had that power.#She was likely going to play a very prominent role during her son's minority and imo it's problematic to assume otherwise#(Lynda Pidgeon assumes otherwise but she's based her assumption on objectively false information so I don't think we should take her#seriously)(see: she claims that EW lacked influence compared to her male relatives in royal councils when EW HERSELF WAS IN ROYAL COUNCILS)#That's not to go too far the other direction and claim EW tried to dominate and tactlessly exclude others - we know she didn't#The impression we get by this first council and by Richard's own actions indicates that she Richard and Anthony would likely#work *together* when it came to governing the realm#I do find it frustrating when people disregard the fact that based on the impression we have she would've had a very visible#and powerful role

To be honest, stardew valley has me in such a chokehold. It always has, even before the 1.6.
In such a way that my brain wants to smash my hyperfixation into it. So late at night I'll be awake thinking of this stardew/south park mashup.
Call that bad boy Star Park AU.
But no brain! Bad! We already have too much going on! You have a Secret Soulmate AU. Fantasy AU, A Cowboy AU story staring Kenny that's still in the outline phase, and these one shots!
(Look at the tags to watch me descent into madness)
#like C'mon#it would be so cute and wholesome#ya know#everything south park isn't#its not my fault I think about me and my friends ocs starting a little farm together#i got one friend I rp with#we smash everything into our stardew rp#it ain't even really stardew besides like the layout of the town#I could write something like that up#like Stan and his family are already “farmers”#the heart event where he tells you he fucking hates it#but next heart event he confesses he's starting to associate farming with you#and now...maybe its not so bad?#COME ON#Kenny taking Karen to see your animals and falling in love with the way you're so gentle with her#Kyle finding you passed out in the mines and scolding you for being careless#but he's patching you up while he does it!!!?#Cartman demanding you bring him crops from your farm because#“everyone elses crops taste like dirt and ball sweat! at least I can stomach yours.”#(its the sweetest thing hes ever said tbh)#tweek having his little coffee shop set up there#he gets away from his parents and moves out to the valley because its quiet!#Craig moves out there to study the stars because they're so clear he can almost see all of them without a telescope#Clyde is JUST Alex and you cant change my mind#after the death of his mother he goes to live with his grandparents#Bebe is like a mix of Haley and Emily!#her events would be you helping her get her outfit designs off the ground and using her photography skills to have you model them#Wendy's whole thing would her being the mayors assistant but over heart events you make her believe in herself#and she becomes mayor; fuck you lewis you old fuck#shhh its a secret

As a homesteader, I can say 100% Halsin needs some serious help. He is all about "nature has a balance, where all are cared for", meanwhile here I am, having to pull two drakes off one lady duck because, by nature, both will attempt to breed her as roughly as possible, even if it ends up injuring/killing her.
Also, by nature, my chickens have a strict pecking order. A good few get bullied as they are the lowest in the order. I attempted to introduce some young ladies to my less than a foot tall Sebright Rooster, and he was brutal with the bullying. I had to pull them out, he was so bad.
Nature is not a beautiful, idealistic lifestyle. It is survival of the fittest.
Perhaps Halsin needs to seriously rethink civilizations' role in nature. That we, as people of all races, differ from animals in that we can choose to rise above our basic desires and urges if we so choose. Chaotic change is normal among the wilds, but we can actually bring good change, despite however much evil is in the world.
That is our role.
#halsin#the more and more i reread dialogue with him the more he shouldnt have been an archmage#heres the thing- EA Halsin felt like an ArchMage#even when he talked about his previous failings he still sounded somewhat confident in what he had to do#i dont know if they changed this but in EA it was implied he killed isobel or however you spell her name#sad elf dilf's daughter that loves nightsong that person#it was implied he killed her out of self defense and had awful for it#and that he took more responsibily for the shdow curse because her death was the last straw that broke her father#it wasnt just thaniel that tied him to breaking the curse#it was wanting to put a grieving father out of his misery#misery halsin had directly caused#I LOVED THAT#btw HE WAS ALREADY AN ARCHDRUID THEN#or it was implied#he represented the druids at least at the time#i hate to say it but everyday I worry that we ruined the character by our demands#this doesnt feel like the same guy from EA#also...hes against the city's behavior yet if you slaughtered the grove he forgives you no problem#'you reacted accordinf to your nature' yes halsin#as are all the people tryibg to survive in the city#also...350 ISNT OLD FOR A WOOD ELF#hes legit maybe just hitting his 30s#elves are considered CHILDREN until 100 years old#i am forever haunted by the quote the devs once said#'we always saw him as an old wizened archdruid'#what did we do to our bear man?#what did we DO?!#bg3 spoilers#baldurs gate 3 spoilers#bg3
