Celebration time at COP21!

Did you hear?! A global climate agreement was reached today in Paris at COP21. For the first time ever, the world has agreed to act on climate change collectively. 

There’s lots more work ahead, but this is a tremendous, historic step toward a clean energy future, protecting public heath, and strengthening national security. 

To everyone who took part to Demand Climate Action, from marching for climate to signing our petition to creating art for awareness: THANK YOU!!

We asked Laure what she’s here to demand. “I’m here to demand real solutions. I’m here to defend biodiversity, nature, and the stabilization of the climate. It has to be associated with a real societal change. We can’t keep all the inequalities between the countries of the north and the countries of the south. We have to help [southern countries] find solutions to poverty and climate change and the destruction of nature. It’s not just nature. For now. ------------------------------- Here’s a list of mishaps and slip-ups in the Sundarbans in the past eighteen months: September 2014: A ship carrying cement empties its cargo into the protected #forests. Two weeks later, also in September 2014, a ship carrying fly #ash runs aground and sinks in the Sundarbans. December 9, 2014: The OT Southern Star -7 spills 358,000 liters of Heavy Fuel #Oil into the Sela River. December 31, 2014: The UN oil spill assessment team recommends banning oil tanker traffic through the Sundarbans. This photo was taken soon after the #oilspill, of a 10 year old child helping clean the oil up sans any protective gear. May 4, 2015: The MV Jabal-e-Nur sinks, carrying 500 metric tons of muriate of potash, a fertilizer. May 9, 2015: In the aftermath of the fertilizer ship sinking, the Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan announces that ships "could stop using the Sela River and Sundarbans." May 23, 2015: The Bangladeshi government does an about face and declares the Sela River route through the Sundarbans open to all traffic, including oil tankers. March 19, 2016: a ship carrying 1235 tonnes of #coal capsized in the #Shela River near Harintanna ----------------------------------------------------- In spite of repeated calls to halt hazardous commercial shipping traffic through the ecosensitive #UNESCO world heritage site in light of calamitous disasters, the Bangladeshi government seems to play deaf and blind. Tower Power

Did you know the Eiffel Tower received a chic makeover this year? 

It now has two wind turbines! The turbines will generate enough electricity to power the tower’s first-level commercial spaces, including its restaurant, souvenir shop, and history exhibits. 

A powerfully subtle addition, the turbines blend into this iconic symbol of Paris. Painted the same color as the tower, they also rotate slowly and quietly.

More changes are in the works. The SETE organization, which runs the tower, set a goal to reduce the tower’s environmental impact by 25 percent. Future renovations will add solar panels, a rainwater collection system to supply toilet water, and high-efficiency LED lights. 

As the city increases its climate efforts, the 126-year-old symbol of Paris remains très á la mode.
