I absolutely despise Alden Vacker. Half of that hatred comes from him being problematic, and the other half comes from him putting a bad name on the name Alden. The only character I’ve come across with my name and it’s this guy???

Anyway, never thought I’d catch myself making Keeper of the Lost Cities fanart in almost 2025, but here I am, doing that.

Alright so l saw a few people on the internet saying that Sophie Foster is a pick me because she doesn't like make up ,gowns,or anything figuratively feminine.STOPP.I am on full fledged mamma bear mode.Because,pick me is a term used to describe someone,a girl in most cases (i think)who puts down other girls or claims that she is different, to get more attention(from guys.)And Sophie Foster is nothing like that.Sure she doesn't like to wear gowns because she doesn't feel comfortable in them.And come on if you have to wear a 3-5kg gown everyday,every hour of the day,then you would be uncomfortable too.The other elves in the series don't mind it that much because they have always lived like that,and those who feel uncomfortable switch to tunics like Sophie did,and there is nothing wrong with that.You should wear what you are comfortable in.About accessories and makeup,it's clearly stated that Sophie hates make up and fancy accessories(dramatic pause) because she doesn't want to stand out.Sophie has always been uncomfortable with attention (till the last two books)and just wants to blend in with the crowd.She doesn't like the attention that comes with dressing up, because she doesn't want to stand out.And another thing,Sophie never criticised other girls for dressing up.She never put them down to get attention.Like she doesn't think it's WRONG to dress up or attract the crowd.For example,Sophie has always admired Biana for her fashion sense and beauty tho they both have very different styles.Sophie respects Biana's fashion and doesn't judge her for being girly nor does she EVER compare herself to other girls in a narcissistic manner to prove how different she is from "other girls."She is NOT a pick me and DOES NOT give "l'm not like these other girls at all" vibes.Thank you.

Sophie, bolting upright from her nap: what? No. Yes. I'm awake. Where am I?

Mr. Forkle: in a meeting, where you're supposed to be awake.

Sophie: I'm sorry, I couldn't sleep last night.

Biana: you know, when you can't sleep it means that someone is thinking about you.

Sophie, tiredly: I know that you're talking about some love thing, but I have way too many enemies to joke about a person who thinks about me at night.

I love the idea of Biana Vacker being a bad match and what it could mean for the Vacker family.

Of course her parents would still love her and respect her decision. However they would encourage her to still apply for matchmaking and receive her first packet, just in case. Even if Biana’s partner’s name isn’t on the packet they would still encourage her to hold her first winnowing gala, just in case.

I imagine them helping her pick out a gorgeous purple dress, with long lacy sleeves and an elegant neck piece. Most excitingly, it’s surrounded by the brightest purple gems. She almost loves it, until she notices that all of her scars are covered. All the dresses her mom recommended had long sleeves.

In a fit of rage she cuts the sleeves and collar from the dress. It’s a terrible job and makes something beautiful hideous. Just like the glass did to her.

She has to fix it herself. She takes a few other dresses from her closet and cuts them apart too. It takes all night but eventually she makes it gorgeous again. It’s a patchwork of all her favorite clothing. It’s sleeveless and displays all her scars. It feels a bit like taking control of the situation.

It’s also the first dress she’s ever made by herself.

She goes to the gala and dances with all the eligible individuals, making nice conversation and being the perfect Vacker child. Obviously, she doesn’t meet the love of her life. She already knows them.

She’ll tell her parents after. They understand.

Fitz yelled at her the first time she told him. They got in a huge fight about it. It’s the first time Biana truly understands that he faces more pressure being a Vacker than she does. He is the golden child, he will always be the golden child.

They both cry after the fight. Biana because she feels alone. Fitz because he once faced the same decision as Biana and chose his legacy. He really loved Sophie. He cries, pretending there is a universe where he was as strong as his sister.

He’ll find her the next day and apologize. He’s proud of Biana. He’ll do everything he can to support her.

Biana will become known as the sibling who destroyed the Vacker legacy. Even though Alvar was the one who committed atrocities. He might have started the destruction of their name but she finished it.

She becomes the change Alvar wishes he was. She often reflects on their similarities, wondering at what point does the love in her heart turns into hate.

It was probably a Vacker that started the matchmaking system, only fitting that a Vacker ends it.

expanding on the della pyren thing. so basically the idea is that della's maiden name is pyren. she's related to fintan, and her family tends toward having elemental abilities (so lots of gusters, hydrokinetics, flashers, shades, vanishers, and probably more pyrokinetics/"talentless" people than average).

this caused della to be incredibly scared of manifesting as a pyrokinetic her entire childhood. she manifested at fourteen toward the end of level four, which is average, but the years before that were absolute hell for her. her parents are a flasher and a hydrokinetic (both elemental abilities), so they were fairly certain della would also end up with an elemental ability. and she was always terrified that she was going to end up a pyrokinetic. to compensate for this fear, she pushed herself incredibly hard in school and was consistently number one.

a lot of people at school didn't want to be her friend because she was related to someone who was technically a murderer, and you know how the elves are about family, and their whole "family defines all" attitude. this was a factor in della ditching her name for alden's, and as a matter of fact was a factor in her choosing alden from her list in the first place. she went, oh look, there's a person with a name that pretty much carries the exact opposite connotations as mine. and thus began their fucked up relationship . . .

Biana made so much sense in the first book

Let’s say you were Biana in the first book.

Before the events of KOTLC:

Your brother and your dad are always disappearing and leaving you out. You find yourself picking out flaws that your brother never had a problem with. “Am I always going to be the bronze to his gold?” Naturally, you start to turn to your friends for entertainment, including your best friend and your brothers’ cute friend who skipped a grade. You quickly become the most popular girl in school, everybody at your feet. “Do they like you because of you, or your status?” One day, you invite some friends home. They seem really giggly, for whatever reason. The second your brother walks in, they all flock to him. “Did he really make it about him today?” Your mother and your two best friends are the only ones who understand. Your mother tells you to be nice, because he doesn’t have many friends. It’s ok, at least your brother’s back.

When Biana is first introduced:

A dress suddenly disappears in your closet. When you ask your mom what happened, she says they’ve picked up some girl your age. It’s why they were doing all those errands, and they took your dress instead of buying a new one. “Another kid for my parents to love more.” You finally can’t take it, and you and your mom get into an argument. She uses her powers to disappear. “Classic. Always running away from conflict.” You hear your father’s voice. Oh. That girl is here. The epitome of everything your parents love more. Secrets, leaving you out, and your brother. Whatever.

The Elwin scene:

Is the school nurse in your house today? In taking a closer look, he is. You go to investigate when you see a ‘moment’ shared between your brother and that girl. She’s scared of the doctor. Yeah, right. The worst thing in the doctor is the medicine. You have a fun little chat with your brother and then go back to your room. It’s ok. You can always ignore her. It will be hard, but not impossible.
