Okay I listened to Paranoid by Black Sabbath and now I kinda wanna listen to Megadeth’s covers of Paranoid and Delivering the Goods. Plus Never Say Die but I haven’t checked to see if that’s a cover yet aye I looked it up online it is a cover! Megadeth made two Black Sabbath covers!

Also while I’m at it the lead singer of Black Sabbath also sung a song on the Black Sabbath tribute album I should listen to the original and the cover

changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.

I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.

Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.

No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.

But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?

2. he has a massive network of spies and agents that do his bidding across all of thedas and speak about him with reverence like a true god. one blesses a fellow fallen elf by saying “the dread wolf guide your soul to peace, brother”

3. solas’s dread wolf form looks like a combination of a pride demon, a wolf, and a dragon, “lupine in appearance but the size of a high dragon, with shaggy spiked hide and six burning eyes like a pride demon” and he can fly around the fade on “wings of fire” that disperse into an army of demons/spirits

4. he shows up in this form to terrorize a group of mortalitasi who were binding spirits for a ritual, and says “YOU MEDDLE PAST YOUR UNDERSTANDING, FOOLISH MORTAL MAGES, AND IN DOING SO, YOU THREATEN ALL CREATION. Y’know, between me being obsessed with their covers of Delivering the Goods and Never Say Die (even though I listened to the originals first somehow despite getting into Megadeth a year before I got into Black Sabbath and Judas Priest and still vastly prefer the originals), thinking about Sleepwalker while watching a YouTube video about Redditors sleepwalking and today listening to Elysian Fields, I think Megadeth may have to be my fourth “focus band” for this year (don’t ask why I’m calling them focus bands the term came to me and I gave up on trying to think of a better term this happens also I swear this has nothing to do with the item of the same name in Pokémon) which I guess works, when obsessing over the Emo Quartet in 2022 and the Thrash Metal Big Four in 2023 I had four “focus bands” seriously how did I not realise I was using the name of a Pokémon item until making this post but this year I currently only have Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden so adding Megadeth to the mix would be an interesting idea even though it means I’m even less likely to listen to Black Sabbath songs (oops, Black Sabbath seem to have been given the Slayer treatment (rarely listen to, genuinely would be surprised if I listened to them at any point unless it’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or Never Say Die) while Judas Priest seem to have been given the MCR treatment (almost always listen to, genuinely would be surprised if in a single day I listened to music but didn’t listen to any Judas Priest songs) and Iron Maiden is somewhere in between)

Also you know I’ll obsess over at least Metallica, Anthrax and MCR again later this year anyway
