Welcome to my little piece of Tumblr where I pay homage to all things guitar. I will try to post a few songs everyday that I'm into at the moment. Oh, I'm also into Fantasy & Game Art, and love Horror Movies.

Thursday, April 24: Gary Moore, "Nuclear Attack"
R.I.P. Gary Moore (1952-2011), Jimmy Bain (1947-2016)
There is being one’s own worst critic, and then there was Gary Moore, who seemed to ultimately despise everything he ever put out, especially his louder material.  To be sure, his solo catalogue was spotty at best, and he all too often fell back on musical and (especially) lyrical clichés.  He was best served either working with a co-captain or foil (like Phil Lynott or Neil Carter) or in a band setting, which was why Dirty Fingers was one of his more enjoyable overall efforts.  Yes, “Nuclear Attack” gave away the game with its title, and Charlie Huhn lacked presence as a frontman, but Moore riffed with energy and resolve while Jimmy Bain and Tommy Aldridge were a steady and propulsive rhythm section.  It might’ve felt a bit out of touch when it was released in Europe in 1984, but if it came out in 1980 when it was actually recorded it would’ve made sense as a ‘70s hard rock guitar hero responding to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and likely more appreciated as a result.  Moore’s push/pull relationship with his own music ultimately made tracks like “Nuclear Attack” a similarly conflicted experience for listeners, but putting the personality aside emphasizes its charge.
