The way in the fight w the museum director insul gets the same big injuries he has given trianon (so far), aand particularly the ones that T thinks back on often as specific sources of fear/humiliation/control (pepper sprayed in the eyes; kicked in the balls; choked with smth small and thin ((wire / car window)))….. im too tired to formulate a proper Thought abt this but the fact this all happens right in front of tjat one painting of dante & virgil in hell + insul and the director are in the exact same pose right as insul is about to die* is obviously so meant to evoke the idea of contrappasso….. at this stage trianon isnt “””strong””” enough (doesnt understand Insul enough and most importantly doesnt fully inhabit himself and his own strengths) to be able to pay back Insul’s violence (as he does later, though not in such a literal way anymore) so tje director will do for now🥰 bc they both need to descend into hell they both need to be subject to physical and psychological violence in order to strip down layers……. so its cool how the director serves that purpose for this phase 1 both in story for insul himself (who eats shit in this fight) and also as a sort of alert for the reader like make no mistake they are BOTH gonna get put thru the ringer. even the top has to wade through cocytus! or smth

Two: He is so aggressively self-contained for survival reasons that the only 'secrets' either of them has on him are the facts that he's gay and he and his mother have a fucked up relationship and THOSE ARE NOT THINGS YOU CAN USE FOR 'friendly family blackmail'.
Three: Alec is a tactician, he is observant, he is ruthless. so many young women recently desiring to be stay at home mothers….the ironic part of it is that all of those women that do become stay at home moms will one day understand why the women before them fought so hard for them to not have to fulfill that role at the point at which they realize that their personhood has been entirely sacrificed in the name of motherhood & there is no going back on that. all women who are stay at home moms are forced to put themselves aside to take care of their children and husband & are forced to make that their entire identity & that is exhausting and dehumanizing. that is how betty friedan started second wave feminism w the feminine mystique. bc women finally realized that all women hated being housewives & there wasn’t smth wrong w each of them individually as they had all believed. but those that do not learn history etc etc……

Student schedule was the fucking best. I’d walk max. 10 mins away from my house. Get my mind blown open by smart people for an hour. Fuck around for the rest of the day letting my mind chew over what I learned. Walk into town if I feel like it go to H&M if I feel like it go to a cafe if I feel like it. Get fresh bread and eat it on the walk home if I fucking feel like it dude. Get home there are people my age with free time in my house, spend hours getting ready for a night out, immediately abandon them and have fun dancing to shit music. God damn I miss that.
#the solution is only having to work for 10 hours a week max#S2g my course was the best I had like 8 hrs contact time and every single one blew my brain across the walls#had a lecturer in first year where I had to schedule half an hour of walking around time after his seminars cuz I was so deep in thought#now I only learn stuff when it’s ‘practical’#and I only use my brain for my stupid job#and my brain is on strike cuz my job boring as hell and unrewarding#I want to go into town on a weekday dude#I want to know if I don’t make it into town today I can go tomorrow#I want to live without planning every move a week in advance

oh no, the bane of every translator’s existence.
so for those of you who don’t know, shiritori is a very simple japanese game. you say a word, and then take the last “letter” (in japanese it’s actually closer to a sound I guess) of that word to make a new word. if you choose a word that ends in “ん”, or “n”, you lose, because no word in Japanese starts with ん.
this is a very popular way to introduce word play or just fill in the space or whatever in anime and manga, but sometimes authors get REALLY creative with it and it can be a nightmare because of course these words don’t map 1-to-1 with English. anyway, let’s go through it!
so the “k” is “ノリ”, “nori”. you may have heard the word nori before, but it’s usually translated as “seaweed”. in order to make it work for the next line the translator instead went with “kelp”. this is actually kind of interesting, listening back to it. in the anime, black-hair says “nori”, and then blondie works off of “ri” to get to the next word. the next word ends in “ku” so then red-head works off of “ku”. but the subs competley skip over the two words here and instead include “nori/kelp” for two lines, haha. basically, “let’s start with k!” “k...k...kelp” is just one word, while the Japanese actually has two words here (both “nori” and the next word).
ANYWAY. the word after “nori” is “riku” which I actually am unfamiliar with. because I don’t have kanji to work off of, I can’t be 100% sure, but my best guess is “陸”, which google is telling me can also be “shore”. the English completely skips this (like I mentioned above) in order to connect with the next joke.
red-head works off of “ku” from “riku” and comes up with “空気入れ忘れた!” “空気入れ” is “air pump”. it ends in “re”, so the next character works off of that.
he says “レモンチョウチョウウオ”, which, after looking for that a lot longer than I’d like to admit, I came up with “dotted butterfly fish”. it’s FOUND in the Pacific Ocean (and Indian I think), but I couldn’t find any reference to that being used in its name. but for the sake of keeping the word train alive, ya do what ya gotta do I guess xD
I cut it off here, but in the next few lines there is a direct visual reference to the fish in question, so the translator is trapped into making the wordplay end with SOME kind of reference to a fish-- if there was no visual reference they might have been able to make it work a bit differently, or avoid having to skip the “riku” word.

idk i feel like there's definitely a point where determining which hyperspecific marginalized group has it worse has diminishing returns
#the adas speak#i wrote a long ramble i won't post bc my thoughts are too complicated to try to explain to the whole internet#which. my ultimate conclusion is that the open internet just isn't as good a medium for these things as we'd all like it to be#despite how ubiquitous it is#i think it's a good starting point. it was a good starting point for me. but that's it in my opinion/experience#if you want to go deeper you have to change your tactics instead of trying to have nuanced conversations with the whole internet#which is why i'm getting offline and directing my attention at one irl cause. bc everyone can't go deep on everything#which is something the internet won't really tell you bc it's actually a fuck ton of different people with different experiences#all trying to get people to pay attention to them. and for good reason. but you as one person can't go deep on everything#to be clear my goal isn't to like. fully tunnel on black people or anything#my sense of solidarity won't just go poof bc i decide to focus on one thing#to me it's kind of like the difference between high school and a college degree and a masters and a phd#the internet is high school. i've learned a lot of different things but i can't really do much with all of it at once#so i'll get a college degree in certain things i want to focus on. a masters in my own axes of oppression probably#and then i'll write my dissertation in nigga shit bc it's the thing that i'm most passionate about#does this make sense? i hope so#this started out about some other shit but i like where it ended up more so i'm keeping it#anyways i like really need to go to bed. i've decided to start getting extra hours on weekends#i think i'll be tired regardless of how consistent my sleep schedule is and i'm sick of being half-awake so many hours#sleeping almost 12 hours straight may not be the best solution but it sure is something isn't it
