The way he still manages to maintain an expression of religious devotion to a flawed and broken ’deity’ while suffering for and at the hand of that ‘deity’ will forever amaze me. Obsessive Devotion Castiel, save me. The way he still believes in this new god he’s found even after he’s been pushed away time and time again because he believes Dean Winchester is good and will do what he thinks is best after God his Father abandoned him.

And the way Dean needs him back.

Destiel AU, where when Sam assumes Dean and Cas are dating, so when Dean starts to lose his memories, Sam reminds Dean that him and Cas are dating, and Dean just rolls with it not knowing any better.

Or sam knows they're not dating but is so sick of the pining he decides to pull a prank to get back at them.

Either way, sam is laughing his ass off, dean flirting with Cas, and cas accidentally causing a state wide power outage

And like I need everyone to rewatch s1-2 with the mindset that Dean’s never had a hunting partner before. “I was working my own gig in new orleans” and “dad used to send me away” and “the story became the story” and like, yes, Dean and John did hunt together, as evidenced in 1x04, but they weren’t hunting partners, as evidenced in 1x20 by how John treats him.

The majority of hunts Dean went on were alone. He did the witness questioning, the research, the puzzle solving, the cemetery digs, the monster hunts alone.

Which puts two things into perspective. The first is that Dean is very very good at outsourcing. One scene that comes to mind is in 1x16 where Sam teases Dean for calling another hunter to uncover some lore. He didn’t have a partner ever to help pick up the slack when shit hit the ceiling (on hunts with John, Dean is playing support in every avenue) until Sam started hunting full time and was able to help provide support via their mutual partnership.

The second is that Dean is putting in a performance specifically for Sam for two entire seasons straight. The long winded sighs, the digs at Sam being a “college boy nerd,” pretending to hate reading, downplaying his interpersonal skills and empathy towards civilians.

It’s a facade. One entirely catered towards Sam to make him feel more comfortable, and like Dean needs him there. He spends most of 1x11 lamenting that Sam isn’t there, to Sam but also in general because he misses Sam.

And like, there isn’t even really a point I’m trying to make here. It’s just that s1-2 Dean (first season in particular) is written so insanely well. Especially in retrospect of later seasons. The first time we see Dean let his game face drop is so telling of the character we get for 15 more seasons.

“I don’t want to,” happening in 1x01 is insane. From his first appearance on screen we learn exactly who he is: a big fake who’s desperately lonely.

In a perfect world they would have written a plotline where Dean becomes addicted to angel grace because it was the only thing that keeps the effects of the mark of cain at bay.

just three years after john died, the sons he brutally raised like soldiers and taught to shoot first, ask questions later, straight up adopted a whole angel of the lord into family so completely that all of heaven and hell even knows he’s theirs.

even Mary when she came back got with the assignment and instantly decided Cas was ‘one of her boys’

I had never thought about shipping Soldier Boy and Sam, and now they won't leave my mind 👁️👄👁️

soldier boy is mean and crazy, especially after being held captive for like 40 years and so when he finally escapes he realises everything changed and ppl have forgotten him as a hero. and it seems like the only person who genuinely cares abt him is this bright eyed guy who's freakishly tall and has princess hair, Sam, he said his name was.

the thing is, soldier boy's name is Ben, not freaking dean, and who's Dean anyway??? but that doesn't matter when Sam is there looking after him and is like, so glad he found him and hugs him so tight, and soldier boy misses the physical contact, misses human affection.

don't get me wrong now, soldier boy is a bad man, he's really shitty and everyone would be safer if he died, but luckily Sammy is there to distract him from committing crimes, or at least some of them.

Sammy knows that's not his brother, but that's a version of his brother, he wears his face and sounds like him, and he likes greasy burgers and shitty diner food, as it happens, so there's similarities after all. Sammy doesn't care that the more he looks into this guy, the more scary, and fucked up shit he finds abt him, this version of Dean is NOT good, he's a total maniac. but the only reason he's like this is because he doesn't have sam in this universe, doesn't have Bobby or Castiel or even Baby.

Soldier Boy drags Sammy with him whenever they go and Sammy follows, he listens to Sam trying to explain he's from another universe and that in the other universe they're brothers, and all soldier boy says is, "I'm not your brother," Sammy is a bit confused but keeps going and tells him abt monsters they hunt, demons, angels and soldier boy listens, and all he takes away from that speech is that Sammy is definitely on something, and soldier boy WANTS some from what he's having.

Sam also quickly realises that in this universe, people have superpowers, so gets cornered once at a gas stop by someone who can turn their skin into burning lava, and Sammy quickly realises he's vulnerable here, he doesn't know the first thing to fight off these people, it's a scary world, but then soldier boy shows up, and he's furious, blasts that person away and goes to town on them, he's animalistic, sadistic and brutal, with every hit, with every crunch and every rip, Sammy flinches, blood and fire flying everywhere.

and when soldier boy is done he has a wild look on his face, he's satisfied with his work, so he drags a shaking Sammy back in the car and Sammy just starts crying, he doesn't make any noises either and the man doesn't even know what to do, so he does the first thing he can think off and hugs him tight, and as soon as he wraps his inhumanly strong arms around Sammy, Sammy starts to sob. and soldier boy thinks of how to calm him down, so he thinks of westerns he's watched where the main lead would comfort the girl after she gets kidnapped or hurt, so he does just that, rocks them a little, runs his hands down Sammy's back and stroked his hair, shushing and cooing at him, that nobody will hurt him, not if soldiers there, not if deans there.

I would pay an ungodly amount of money for a Supernatural finale where Dean rescues Cas from the Empty and tells him he loves him too, Eileen comes back to be with Sam, and Jack chooses to live with the four of them in the bunker as a happy family.
