The Break Up Blog - Day Ninety Seven

I slept much better last night. 

That was mainly because I drugged myself up with Benadryll, Advil and a lovely effervescent flu tablet from home. 

So I only woke up once, and that was literally to confirm that my throat felt better than yesterday. 

I still felt a bit sick when I got out of bed, but D postponed our hangout in lieu of the maintenance guys going to her apartment to fix her air-conditioning system. So that my schedule a little more open to hang out with KI a little earlier in the day. 

I took my time showering and getting dressed by booking a taxi to take me to the nearest subway station. Then I wasted a good hour on purpose taking the subway and saving money to meet KI. But I got to my last subway stop and ended up taking another taxi to the mall I was supposed to meet KI at. I figured that wasting another 10 RMB was more profitable than walking for free and risking getting lost 1,5 kilometres away from my destination. 

In the end, convenience and practicality won the day. 

My hangout with KI was nice. We went to a Mexican restaurant first and then we walked around her old college campus which was in the near vicinity. Then we went to the cafeteria at her old college and shared a bowl of noodle soup before I went home again in another taxi. 

I was quite keen to hear about KI’s recent break-up with her African boyfriend and how she was faring, She’s doing ok and still magically keeping in touch with her ex-boyfriend. I felt a little worried when she said she’d consider getting back together with him, even though they had a big fight not too long ago about him borrowing money from her and not paying it back yet. 

In KI’s own words, ‘couples fight’. I’m not saying I disagree, but I feel like when couples fight about the same thing (especially something like money), then it’s probably not a good thing. 

I mean, mine and X’s big fights devolved into ones about money over time, and that was definitely a relationship-ender by the time we were done dating. 

The only thing I hope for in my next relationship is not to date someone who’s rich, but to date someone who’s financially independent. Because I don’t think I could stomach another useless fight about money with another human being till the day I die. 

Still, maybe KI will be luckier than me in love, whether it’s with this boyfriend or the next. 

It’s raining a bit in my city today, so I figured I would chill out in my living room and a few things like typing my blog, downloading some video files for future entertainment, uploading some more chapters online for that old story of mine and doing my nails. 

I just want to rest as much as possible before this coming week of getting my students to finish their latest writing project. They’ve been trying as is without all the extra school events the Elementary Department had to prepare this semester. 

N went ahead and hired two new teachers to replace C and I who have less than a year’s teaching experience and very little invested in teaching younger children. That totally won’t backfire on the Elementary Department and the school later, hardy har har. 

Oh well, it’s their mistake to make and definitely not mine to worry about. All I can do is focus on getting a decent job that will let me stay in my current city for another year or longer. After that, I might head back to Cape Town and go into a different working field altogether. 

I’m not really sure yet about anything. 

But K did tell me once that that’s what makes it life so exciting - the not knowing everything part. She got divorced before turning 35 and seems to be dating a really good guy now, so I think I just might believe her. 

That’s about it for now. I’m gonna indulge in a little drinky-pooh before I go to sleep later and generally not give any fucks about anything of consequence for the rest of the day.
