HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO PAUL WILLIAMS. In addition to his amazing run as an actor and singer-songwriter, he wrote or co-wrote (with Biff Rose and Roger Nichols) songs covered by David Bowie, The Carpenters (“Rainy Days & Mondays,” “We’ve Only Just Begun”), Jack Jones, The Muppets, Helen Reddy, 3 Dog Night (“Old Fashioned Love Song”—also covered by Micky Dolenz), and Dionne Warwick—not to mention award-winning film and TV scores. He’s been Chairman and President of ASCAP since 2009 and is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In recent years he’s had a resurgence, working with Richard Barone, Daft Punk, and The Scissor Sisters. Somewhere he’s found time to take up skydiving and become a UCLA certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor, co-authoring the book GRATITUDE & TRUST: RECOVERY IS NOT JUST FOR ADDICTS.
Paul wrote the confessional “Someday Man” as a single for The Monkees. Upon release in 1968, it under-performed and got lost as a “deep cut” + Paul’s own version didn’t do much better. However, as cream rises to the top, in time the sophisticated and art-y song grew in popularity, in part because Davy Jones revived it for his solo set in 2009. Now it’s considered to be a Jones/Monkees evergreen and (speaking as a former band member) it was one of our favorites to play. Here’s the song from the 2011 tour Davy did w/The Monkees. Meanwhile, HB PW and thank you for your many musical gems.

+ Pete Townshend considers himself to be a Bisexual Catholic
+ it took Axl Rose 9 years to complete the album Chinese Democracy(1999-2008), he once told a rock journalist that "if I don't make this album the way that it's supposed to be and sound, I'm gonna die, you don't understand, I need it to be the greatest thing I've ever made"
+ Morrissey is one of the first Musicians/Rockstars to come out as Celibate(the lifestyle choice to abstain from sex)
+ Nikki Sixx wrote "shout at the devil" after having a nightmare that the devil was in his house
+ Spirit In The Sky by Norman Greenbaum was an anthem for members of the Christian Revival Movement of the early 1970s, they called themselves "Jesus Freaks", a lot of them were former hippies who wanted to get clean from drugs/drug abuse and with their new found Faith in God, they were able to, "Jesus Freaks" is still a term that some Christians use these days to describe themselves, whether or not they used to be hippie, I myself(Jimmy) would describe myself as a modern day "Jesus Freak", I've never had drug issues but I have had a hard upbringing/was lost in life before, but thanks to God Almighty, I am Saved and Redeemed
+ Michael Jackson suggested that the band Queen should release "Another Bites The Dust" as a single to promote their album "The Game" back in 1980, it became one of their biggest hits
+ Bryan Ferry said that early on in his career, the reason that he wore Glam/Eccentric Clothing was because he wanted to stand out and show others that it was okay to be different, he also said that the reason he changed his style from "Eccentric to Laid Back/Suave" was because he wanted to show that the older you get, you should also have the dignity to be classy

Moana 2
Late last year Disney decided to shadow drop a teaser for a sequel that no one (myself especially) was expecting; Disney had been planning something big for the franchise but more on that later. For now here’s Moana 2.
Taking place 3 years after the first movie, Moana’s legend has grown exponentially and she is now known as a wayfinder, a leader of her people tasked with connecting the island of Motanui with the rest of Oceania. She discovers a clue of another island called Motufetu, which due to machinations of the storm god Nalo and his (unwilling) accomplice, Matangi has disappeared from the rest of the ocean. And after receiving a vision from her ancestors, learns that she has to find it as its fate is connected to Motanui.
As far as sequels go this was fine, there were a few noticeable changes but nothing that disrupted the DNA of either film, thankfully; they managed to get most of the band back together.
The big exception being Lin Manuel-Miranda as songwriter, whose absence was quite noticeable; in his stead was the duo of Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow or as I referred to them, “We have Lin Manuel at home!” Most of the songs were extremely derivative and ever rap lyric made me cringe. The soundtrack’s only saving grace was “What lies beyond”, which I found more inspired than “How far I’ll go” I will die on this hill.
The returning cast didn’t miss a beat, Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson were just as entertaining as in their previous outing, Temuera Morrison and Nicole Scherzinger return as Moana’s parents as well; with Morrison doing his own singing this time. Rachel House is back as Tala, Moana’s late grandmother. And of course voice acting legend, Alan Tudyk returns as Hei Hei.
Newcomers were plenty; Awhimai Fraser voices the duplicitous Matangi, David Fane plays curmudgeon farmer Kele, Gerald Ramsey is Tautai Vasa, the previous wayfinder and ancestor of Moana, Hualālai Chung voices Moni storyteller and Maui fanboy, and Rose Matefeo is the voice of Loto the socially inept engineer. However I would be remiss to ignore Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda voicing Moana’s little sister, Simea; one of the better child characters I have seen in cinema.
The bright vibrant colors, and use of Pacific Islander imagery was outstanding.
This is a story about leadership, as Moana navigates through Oceania and her role as chief and wayfinder, she is tested relentlessly by the gods, her position, and herself.
That said I feel like it didn’t stick the landing, because it was built initially to be the beginning of a show on Disney plus (WHICH I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TOO BTW!) This felt like a truncated backdoor pilot and I find that disappointing because there were a lot of good ideas and amazing bits of worldbuilding that just like in the previous film were underutilized. This felt like a bloated combination of Return of Jafar mixed with the pacing of the first Frozen movie.
Moana 2 should have stayed a series, because the story needed more time in the oven, it’s mid at best; and I’m mad about it, just disappointed.
I give Moana 2 a 3 out of 5.

🌹 — BACKGROUND !
LEE JANG-MI was born on july 15th, 1997 in busan, south korea to DAVID OKOYE and LEE CHUN JA. the former was a former olympic swimmer and united nations diplomat who hailed from one of the wealthiest families in nigeria. the latter was one of asia’s most well known singers, as well as an actress and a former beauty queen, and she also happened to be a SAMSUNG heiress. shortly after jang-mi was born, she and her parents moved to seoul in order to be closer to her maternal grandparents. the family would spend most of their time there, although they would briefly reside in london, as well.
despite the family’s picture perfect life, tragedy would strike a mere nine months following jang-mi’s birth. in may 1998, they would travel to italy to celebrate chun ja’s 31st birthday, which fell on the 25th. just four days later, however, both of jang-mi’s parents found themselves in a devastating car accident. unfortunately, the accident took both of their lives. chun ja was pronounced dead at the scene, while david fell into a coma, and later succumbed to his injuries a day later. jang-mi and her grandparents were quick to return to korea, and she was left in their care as her parents’ sudden deaths made international news.
up until jang-mi’s first birthday, she was raised by her grandparents and occasionally by her aunt, lee chaewon. however, her grandparents were already retired, and the grief of losing their eldest daughter and son-in-law made it hard for them to properly raise their granddaughter. chun ja’s youngest sister, bae eun-ji, already had a family of her own, and she was unsure if she could split her time amongst three children who were all under the age of five. meanwhile, although chaewon was unmarried, she was almost always working, and she didn’t want to leave jang-mi in the care of a nanny most of the time. and on top of that, her paternal grandparents resided in nigeria. as a result, jang-mi was regrettably put up for adoption. after a few months in a foster home, she was eventually adopted by a couple from southern california. she was given an english name, cecilia, and her middle names were taken from what her parents wanted to name her (chiara), her mother’s own english name (cynthia), and the meaning of her birth name (rose). and although the world knew of jang-mi’s existence, no one would know what became of her for the next seventeen years.
from then on, jang-mi was raised in california along with her older sister, who was also adopted. she grew up with a particular passion for music, and frequently listened to artists such as WHITNEY HOUSTON, MARIAH CAREY, DESTINY’S CHILD, AALIYAH, ASHANTI, AMERIE, ERYKAH BADU, THE SUPREMES, S.E.S, WONDER GIRLS, SNSD, KARA, 2NE1, MISS A, and LEE HYORI. at the age of fifteen, jang-mi began posting song covers and the occasional original song onto youtube. she began working at a nanette lepore boutique a year later, but shortly after she started her job, she was cast off the street by a representative of IMG MODELS, and was encouraged to enter an open casting call. although jang-mi failed to get a job, she managed to work her way into advertisements and editorials.
in 2013, she was encouraged to participate in that year’s MISS TEEN CALIFORNIA pageant. although initially skeptical, jang-mi would end up participating, and surprisingly, she won. the resulting exposure gave her acting and modeling opportunities like never before, and instead of participating in MISS TEEN USA, jang-mi used the attention to get her music career off the ground. she began starring in off-broadway productions, performing on the streets of los angeles, giving out her demo CDs to the people that would stop to watch her, posting her street performances to youtube, and writing as many songs as possible in her free time. meanwhile, her youtube channel was garnering a significant amount of traction. during the summer of 2014, her covers of PARAMORE’s “still into you” and of LEE HI’s “rose” would go viral. the former got her invited to one of the band’s concerts, while the latter caught the attention of YG ENTERTAINMENT. the label invited her to audition, and wanting to get closer to her home country through music, jang-mi accepted.
jang-mi sang ALICIA KEYS’ “no one” at the final round, and to her surprise, she passed auditions. she signed a 2-year contract with YG, and as a result, she had to quit her job, place her modeling career on hold, and move to south korea. she didn’t stop posting to her youtube channel, however, using it to record her progress as a trainee. jang-mi trained alongside the future members of BLACKPINK, and was actually meant to be one of the group’s members, renowned for her powerful vocals. while training, she had background vocals on the songs of other YG artists, wrote songs for them and what would become BLACKPINK’s discography (including the “WHISTLE” demo and “PLAYING WITH FIRE”), and had small roles in a few dramas. jang-mi was particularly hard working during her time as a trainee, and would even spend her days off in dance studios or at karaoke. however, a year into her trainee, she began having doubts, particularly about how she would be received in a country such as south korea. those doubts turned into stress, and it forced jang-mi to leave the company. returning home, she felt as if she had accomplished nothing.
jang-mi’s brief depressive state after leaving YG only pushed her to work harder, however. after returning to california, she didn’t return to her job, and instead focused most of her time on music and getting into university. in september, she was contacted by record label FUELED BY RAMEN, but she declined their contract offer, as it made her feel better to have control over the earliest aspects of her career. jang-mi formed the band ROSES ‘N THORNS with some of her high school friends, began uploading her original work to SOUNDCLOUD, and immediately started working on what would be her debut album.
in mid-october, jang-mi’s debut single “REWIND” would be released, and her album of the same name would drop at the beginning of november. going by the name LIA WILLIAMS, she spent her time touring across california in small venues and performing at local music festivals. in january 2016, however, a representative from INTERSCOPE RECORDS would attend one of jang-mi’s concerts. she was told about a potential record deal with the label, and just days later, she was singing her music in front of executives in INTERSCOPE’s headquarters. and instead of taking a month like she expected, jang-mi was signing a deal within a couple of hours, with JIMMY IOVINE reportedly saying that no one could leave until she was signed. and immediately afterwards, jang-mi got to work on her major label debut album, FRUITS OF MY LABOR, which would go on to catapult her into mainstream success.
fast forward to 2019, and wanting to begin a career as an idol in korea, jang-mi began looking for agencies to sign to. initially, SM ENTERTAINMENT, SOURCE MUSIC, and RBW looked to sign her, but she declined all of their offers. eventually, in june, she signed with YG—the same company that she trained under five years prior. two months later, her debut album was released, and its lead single topped charts across asia. jang-mi is now one of YG’s most successful soloists, and not only is she one of the best selling artists in korea, but she’s one of the highest selling artists in the WORLD, renowned for her performance skills, lyricism, and impressive vocal ability, garnering the title of “PRINCESS OF POP.”

I'm getting back in my classic rock mode, time to list out all of my favourite men!
First and foremost we have the holy trinity of Rogers:
Roger Daltrey from The Who : he has blue eyes and his hair was glorious, plus he was an absolute madlad in the 70s
Roger Taylor from Queen : I mean, have you looked at him? Rogerina is more beautiful than any woman I've ever seen. Plus he's another madlad who loves cars way too much.
Roger Hodgson from Supertramp : when he was young he had some pretty good vibes, somewhat ascetic and innocent. Plus his singing and songwriting skills are incredible! I love Supertramp so much and it's honestly a shame how they kinda fell apart when he left.
Then, in no particular order
David Byrne from Talking Heads : funny charming guy has a knack for weird choreographies and poignant lyrics he's an incredible artist I love him sm
Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac : yeah yeah say what you will about him we all know about his toxic dynamics with Stevie but his hair looked so fluffy in the 80s. Plus he's a pretty great guitarist and his vocals in Tango in the night are >>>>
Brian May from Queen : he's literally me fr except I don't have a PhD, mad guitar skills and he kinda reminds me of my aunt. Good vibes overall, heh
Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin : honestly I just really liked Stairway to Heaven's solo. This was a rather short crush tbh. But he was kinda cute too, that I can't deny.
Axl Rose from Guns n Roses : November Rain's music video. That's it. I just like long haired men.
Jack Black from Tenacious D : he's just a cool guy and at the same time a bundle of extra sunshine no one can be like him period.
Jon Anderson from Yes : I love his vocals so much it's unreal also he has a certain charm to him that I can't quite pinpoint but it's alright
Morten Harket from a-ha : alright, a-ha isn't really a rock band, but I can't not include this man! He has two zeppelins instead of lungs, I love his group's discography and also, even personality wise, he has smol vibes. To me, he's pocket sized.

His music has brought me 1000s of hours of joy and insight, and tributes to him will abound this week. For my part I am listing 12 Bowie songs that resonate with me at this moment:
Aladdin Sane (1973) All the Madmen (1970)
Days (2003) Everyone Says ‘Hi’ (2002)
Fame (1975) ‘Heroes’ (1977) Jump They Say (1993)

Space Oddity (1969)
Starman (1972)
Stay (1976)
+ (one I aim to cover someday) the powerful “techno spiritual” Dead Man Walking (1997):
“Let me dance away [Till I swivel back round then I fly fly fly] Now I'm wiser than dreams
[Losing breath from the water when I'm gone gone gone] Let me fly fly fly [Spinning slack through reality] While I'm touching tomorrow [Deadens my brain falling up through the years] And I know Who's there [Till I swivel back round then I fly fly fly] [Losing breath from the water when I'm gone gone gone] When silhouettes fall [Spinning slack through reality]
And I'm gone, Like I'm dancing on angels And I'm gone through a crack in the past
Like a dead man walking…”

Who is "the professor"?
I’ve read discussions on the professor in “The Manuscript,” but haven’t seen the 2021 NMPA Songwriting Icon acceptance speech mentioned yet (though I’m sure it has been!) where Taylor thanks “my professors and teachers,” some of them by name.
youtube
Transcript (emphasis mine):
“Thank you, David, for that beautiful introduction. I’m really, really honored to be receiving this award because it honors the part of my job that is so magical and mystifying to me still. I love songwriting so much, because there's an element to it that's still really mysterious. Like, I think any songwriter will tell you, when you get an idea, you're not quite sure where it floated down from, um, but if you can grab onto that idea and turn it into something – a piece of music – that's where craftsmanship comes in, and that's where you have the opportunity to learn and to nurture that craft, and I, I want to take a moment to thank the people who were my professors, my teachers of the craft of songwriting. First of all anyone who wrote with me in Nashville when I was in like 8th or 9th grade, that is insane insane that you did that; I am so lucky that I got to learn from some of the best writers um on Music Row. Liz Rose is someone who spent hours and hours and hours with me when there was absolutely no sign that anything would happen in my career. Um, my dance card was not full, I was fourteen, and she wrote with me so many times and taught me how to edit my, my ideas down to something more concise that packed an emotional punch. Then I got to work later on in my career with Max Martin and Johann Shellback who I learned so much from, just about, you know, from a melodic sense, and i will carry those lessons with me for the rest of my life – I will learn more lessons from them next time we work together – and i just feel really lucky that they've been a part of my life. Jack Antonoff is such a wonderful creator and such a nurturing um presence with any artists, with his own art, with with other artists, he’s just so versatile, and, um, and such a wonderful friend. Um, Aaron Dessner came into my life recently, and he's such a prolific creator. All of these people changed my writing and helped shape it. There are so many others, though and so if you've ever sat in a room and co-written with me, thank you so much. Um anybody who's ever wanted to produce one of my songs, any collaborator I've ever had, I've learned from all of you. I want to say thank you to Troy Tomlinson for always being excited to hear new songs of mine, and um Jody Gerson for being such a champion of female songwriters throughout the industry. This is something that I am so proud to receive and um, you know the fans who are out there who care about my lyrics—you have no idea how much that means to me that you dissect them, and and and copy them into your journals, and, and care about the things that I write, the words that I write. Um, there are amazing songwriters that came before me, who deserve this. There are incredible songwriters coming up now who are just so impressive and amazing i have such an affinity and respect for all of you, and I am honored to receive this. Thank you so much.
For the record, I don’t think it matters who specifically Taylor refers to in “The Manuscript” as the professor, or if it is even one person, a composite, or just a way to put that quote in. Still, it is fun that she has referred to certain people as her professors of the craft of songwriting before.

four albums I’ve been listening to recently!
Thank you @petrichoraline for tagging me! Musical tag games really are my favorites, I'll talk non-stop about songs if I'm not careful lmao
I have some downloaded albums that I end up listening to again and again while driving, so my repeats are less "my latest choices" and more "I'd inject this shit directly into my bloodstream if I could", but I'll try to think of what's been on my mind lately.
In Case I Die, by Will Wood (2023)
I really love Will Wood's lyrics, but his musical style earlier in his career is kind of hit or miss for me personally. Now, his live performances in this latest album are just incredible. He really put all of his emotions into each song, and the acoustic aspect of it all hits me in a completely different way. This shit got me writing poems, literally.
Earth Trip, by Rose City Band (2021)
Listen, im 23 but my musical taste is 100% that of a middle-aged dad. I discovered this band recently and it's so good!! Their work is a bit bluegrass, a bit Americana; and this album specifically just makes me think of the late 60s- which, in my opinion, is a compliment. Anyone who likes stuff like The Grateful Dead, Bread, America, The Doobie Brothers, and even Dave Matthews and Jimmy Buffet should absolutely check it out.
Drink From The Creek, by Joshua Bond (2021)
I found Joshua on tiktok, a surprisingly good tool to discover amazingly talented indie artists, and holy shit is this guy talented. I'm not kidding one bit when I say that this is one of the greatest songwriters of this generation, and it's a shame that his work isn't being praised at all the corners of the globe. He's a folk singer, but one of the best out there, and this album hits me so hard as somebody who's the same age as he is- born in the year 2000, just in time to watch as the world collapses.
The Man Who Sold the World, by David Bowie (1970)
I warned you about my music taste OK. This isn't my favorite of Bowie's albums, but I do think it's incredibly underrated, and it holds a special place in my heart- especially the second track, All the Madmen, which is one of the reasons why I ended up studying Psychology. I've been listening to this one on repeat since I recommended one of its songs to @bingobongobonko , who can consider himself tagged on this game. Gimme all the albums my man
I'm also gonna tag @sybilius @rainyrainbow999 @falling-hand-in-unlovable-hand and @morgannalefey . Please feel free to ignore it, but also I'd love to give your latest albums a listen
#tag game#i love these things but if i tagged anyone who doesnt like being tagged please let me know!#also if i didnt tag you but were mutuals be sure that id love to see your replies too
