Basic Information
Tumblr media
Other Name(s):  Nadežda Pugacheva (before brainwashing), Nadya (family and Perseus Operators), Nad (Keith), Jo (Mason, Woods), Bell (callsign), Auntie Dodie (Toddler!David Mason). Later become Jodie Woods, once she and Frank become married in 1984.
Physical Appearance
Eyes: honeyed brown
Hair: dark brown
Skin: white
Tattoo(s): none
Scar(s): shoulder, chest - gunshot wounds. Other misc. scars.
Face Claim: Kate Beckinsale
Description: At first glance, Jodie seems to be quite plain, though this is something that she prefers given her line of work. Her hair is just past shoulder-length when she wears it down, but when working it is pulled up into a ponytail/low bun. There are some bangs that frame her forehead and sides of her face, which can be wayward when she attempts to tie them back, so usually leaves them alone.
Her facial features are sharp, nestled on an oval shaped frame. Occasionally, when a situation calls for it, she will wear minimal makeup - she feels out of place when she does wear it, so often opts out of it. Her ears are pierced with a singular stud, but takes them out when on missions.
As for what she wears, Jodie will often wear jeans and a plain grey t-shirt when in the safe house or her downtime, accented with a jean jacket, or cardigan if it’s a little cold. She does have a thicker, muted green winter jacket for colder weather. She also wears plain pumps.
For missions, it’s often a muted green turtleneck, dark jacket and combat trousers, with military boots. She will also wear the appropriate paraphernalia attributed with operators to carry extra clips, lethals and other such equipment.
Personality
Like(s): coffee, dogs, nighttime, rain, puzzles, cyphers, that people actually trust her, Frank's beard (if he shaves, she fights), intelligent conversation, her daughter (loves her so much)
Dislike(s): dark chocolate, when it’s so hot you can’t breathe, being snuck up on, being spoken about as though she isn't there, people questioning her loyalty or her integrity, being left out of important conversations that involve her, if anyone messes with her daughter, being judged based on her past, not having full recollection of her past
Strength(s): calm, efficient, loyal, fast thinker, keen eye for patterns and details, can be very patient, willing to compromise where needed, adaptable
Weakness(es): can be cold and mistrustful, can be very guarded even against those she trusts, lets past trauma rule her sometimes, even though loyalty is also her strength it can also be her weakness, her calmness can be taken as being cold, detached, even apathetic sometimes, at other times she can be stubborn and her anger can get the better of her. When she sees red, it's red.
Relationships
Parent(s): unnamed Russian mother, unnamed Russian father
Sibling(s): Radomir Timofeyovich Pugachev aka Timosha (brother)
Friend(s): Sarah and Alex Mason, (after a time) Russell Adler, Aleksandra Adler (@alypink's OC)
Spouse(s): Frank Woods (husband)
Child(ren): Ashley Woods (daughter)
Biography
1949 - Nadežda’s family is captured by the MGB and sent to [redacted], an undisclosed Gulag within rural Russia. Father, a WW2 veteran, was executed at the time of capture. There were rumours that he was critical of the current government and had become belligerent with his negative opinion of his leaders. By extension, his family were heavily scrutinised and kept at the Gulag. Her mother passed away in the labour camp. Initially, Nadežda and her brother, Radomir, were kept there with their mother, until her death, then were sent to a children’s orphanage.
1953 - Nadežda is approached by an old friend of her father’s, who said to have fought alongside him during WW2. He makes her an offer she can’t refuse and joins his ranks despite her young age. She did this as this old friend promised he could find a suitable family to keep her brother safe and grow up to live in a better Russia. From then, she trained to fight and became an excellent tool for Perseus to use. (He had been too late to ask for her father to join his ranks, but she was the next best thing in his mind.)
1958 - At the age of eighteen, Nadežda was ordered to join the KGB by Perseus, to work alongside comrades and earn their trust, so that he may learn ways to exploit them if the need arose in the future and to seek potential operators to join his ranks. She studied at the Higher Intelligence School in Moscow, where she extended her espionage knowledge.
1960 - [redacted].
1962 - Nadežda is ordered to collect information regarding growing US involvement in Vietnam. Any encoded information regarding US military operations is passed over Nadežda’s desk. Also ordered to decode any Russian intelligence regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis.
1965 - [redacted].
1968 - encoded intelligence regarding Operation Fracture Jaw is decoded by Nadežda.
1969 - [redacted].
1976 - Nadežda, alongside other Persues operators, rescues Vikhor “Stitch” Kuzmin.
[Following paragraphs are redacted.]
1979 - Nadežda makes contact with Special Officer, Keith Wells, offering crucial insight into Perseus’ organisation. What causes this change of allegiance is unknown to the CIA. Nadežda is informed by Officer Wells that there is a mole within the CIA and not to trust any other operator other than himself, as they could not risk the information crossing the palms of the wrong person. They come to an agreement that Nadežda would claim no knowledge of him in the face of possible interrogations, if ever that came to happen.
[Following paragraphs are redacted.]
1981 - January 13, Nadežda accompanied Arash Kadivar to Trabzon airfield, Turkey. Subsequently, Kadivar shoots Nadežda after revealing that he knows of her betrayal. He states that it’s a shame one of Perseus’ top agents turns out to be nothing more than a traitorous dog. CIA operatives, Alex Mason, Frank Woods and Russell Adler assassinate Kadivar, preventing the weapons from leaving the country. Upon sweeping the tarmac for survivors, Adler finds Nadežda still alive with a dossier related to Perseus.
Following Nadežda’s capture and recovery from her injuries, traditional methods of interrogation did not succeed. She had hoped that, due to her captors being the CIA, word of her capture might reach Officer Wells, as she intended to keep her word and say nothing of their interactions; after expressing, in one interrogation, that the only operator she would speak with was Officer Wells, she is informed that he was presumed KIA and possibly at the hands of a Perseus Operator. Nadežda does not know whether to trust this information, given what Officer Wells had said in the past and so kept her mouth shut out of loyalty to him.
Several weeks later, through psychological torture, neuroactive drugs and hypnosis, Adler, the CIA, alongside MI6 Agent Helen Park, brainwashed her. A connection was formed between Adler and Nadežda by use of fake, implanted memories inspired by Adler’s time in Vietnam with the success of implying a years-long friendship between the two.
Nadežda was no more and Adler gave her the callsign Bell.
Alongside this, a whole new persona was fashioned and Bell was an MI6 Agent, Jodie Hall, from London, England, though information of her past never went further than that.
“We have a job to do.” was the common trigger phrase to keep Bell in check as well as slipping small amounts of neuro-stimulant drugs to Bell to keep their conditioning effective.
Volkov is captured.
Bell and Woods uncover a Spetsnaz training ground - encrypted information regarding Operation Greenlight is uncovered.
KGB headquarters infiltrated with the help of Dimitri Belikov uncovering previously erased names of Sleeper Agents, who Perseus aims to use in their upcoming infiltration of Operation Greenlight.
Sleeper Agent Theodore Hastings is followed to Cuba, where the mission goes south - Bell saves Park’s life but is unable to save Lazar.
Adler and the team reveal Bell’s true identity, but she remains loyal to their cause, revealing the location of Perseus and the station which will be used to detonate the nukes aimed on half the world. Though she is confused, betrayed and angry, she understands this choice is the right one and, somewhere deep down, she knows she didn’t need the conditioning to have made it.
Solovetsky is attacked and the nukes are stopped.
Bell is MIA for a short while.
Once located, a deal is made with the CIA that she would offer her services and any information she had on the Perseus faction and hunting down any Perseus Operators still in action in exchange for starting a new life in America as her given persona, Jodie Hall.

Every single Brawl Stars character as songs
So, I was unhappy with my prior posts on this topic, both because of the song choices I made and because I didn't properly credit the musicians behind them. Ergo, I'm going to compile all of the brawlers into a single list below the cut, and then update and reblog this post each time a new brawler is released.
Feedback regarding song choices is encouraged if you think you have a better fit for a character.

David Tennant's Obscure TV Appearances: 1989's Biting The Hands
I'm back from my visit with my family and ready to dive straight into my latest find - I'm excited to share I've finally obtained access to David's 3rd earliest TV performance! His first two performances were in 1988: his anti-smoking ad, and in Dramarama: The Secret Of Croftmore. And in 1989 he did a Play On One called Biting The Hands. And I've FINALLY got it! Biting The Hands has been one of the most elusive pieces of work David did in his early years. First, it wasn't a sitcom or an ad but a one-off play, and it was broadcast in the late 1980s, limiting its exposure to those who might be recording on beta or VHS. It was part of the second series of the prime-time contemporary single TV play series, The Play On One (which was itself a re-tooling of an older series called The Play For Today.) Biting The Hands was directed by Carol Wilks and produced by Norman McCandlish. It was 75 mins in length, and was broadcast at 9:30 pm on 11 Apr 1989. Here's the play's synopsis: "Linda and Gail are Hell's Belles - an alternative comedy double act. When success begins to beckon, they must decide whether to change their act or keep doing what they believe in. Are their principles justified, or are they just 'biting the hand that feeds them'?"
The writer of Biting The Hands, Rona Munro, was born in Aberdeen in 1959 and is an award-winning Scottish playwright. She started writing professionally in 1981 and has written for film, television, stage and radio. Biting The Hands was Munro's first play for BBC-TV. Given today's excitement about the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary trailer, it might interest Whovians to know Munro wrote the classic DW story Survival as well as the New Who story The Eaters of Light, making her the first (and only!) writer to do both Classic and New Who!
But Munro has yet ANOTHER connection with our dear DT! For their production of Scotland Matters in 1992, the 7:84 Scottish People's Theatre asked established Scottish writers to consider aspects of life in Scotland and write playlets about them. Munro was one of these writers! She wrote a playlet called 'The Fence' for Scotland Matters which concerned the interrogation of a Gulf War peace protester. In a turn around of questioning technique, we are told the story through the security police and not via the protester. David played the protester Keith!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But back to Biting The Hands - which was produced three years before Scotland Matters and filmed when David was still in drama school. Let's take a look at what the play was about, and go more in depth about its stars: Judith Sweeney (Linda) and Louise Beattie (Gail).
Judith Sweeney (Linda McKay) attended David's alma mater - the RSAMD, now the Royal Conservatoire - and graduated in 1977. She played the role of Sally Shaw on the Scottish soap opera Take The High Road. Louise Beattie (Gail Graham) later went on to star in Emmerdale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are a few more articles on "Biting The Hands" from the time of its broadcast:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beattie's older sister Maureen has ALSO starred with DT many times! Among these are For One Night Only (an evening of theatrical prose, poetry, and gossip at the Swan Theatre for the 1998 RSC Fringe Festival) and a 2001 staged reading of Medea at the Cottesloe Theatre. More recently, Maureen has played David’s mother in Deadwater Fell, and Kelly MacDonald's mother in The Decoy Bride!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we've been introduced to the stars of the play, and we know what it's about, let's get to David's part! His part begins about 47 minutes into the play, and it's a role which makes up a total of about 20 whole seconds. He plays one of three squaddies (low-ranking military) and is in a group of soldiers who travel on the train the main characters Linda and Gail board in Edinburgh to go to London - but he's not seen in this particular scene. After the ladies board the return train back home to Edinburgh, by coincidence these same squaddies happen to be traveling on their train. David's character is the only one of the squaddies to speak, and his words entail wolf-whistles at the two women and calling them "Pet"! Here are some screenshots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a later scene, Linda and Gail happen to bump into another friend on the train, and the three open a bottle of liquor and sing and drink. David's character sings and drinks with them. Here are a few screenshots of that short scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may notice in the first set of screenshots David is clean shaven & in the second, he sports a mustache. These scenes all supposedly occur on the same train from London to Edinburgh so it seems there's a continuity error here. Perhaps these scenes were shot at different times?
These short scenes are the only times David appears in the play. He's given credit in the end titles. Of significance, though, is he is NOT credited as the "Third Squaddie" (a designation I've seen all over the Internet for close to a decade). He's just the third squaddie listed.
Tumblr media
The BFI (British Film Institute) holds a VHS video recording of Biting The Hands. The copy is in "pending" status, which means it's unlikely the copy can be viewed.
Before I close this post on Biting The Hands, two more little benefits: here are its opening sequence, and its title frame!

By Hook or by Crook | Chapter 15
Pairing: Rumbelle
Rating: E, eventually
Summary: Just when Belle thinks she’s doomed to a life without adventure, an investment banking firm all the way from New York City plops its new headquarters in Storybrooke’s abandoned cannery.
From the beginning on ao3
——————————–
Moe French loved his glass koi, and even though he had a hard time relating to his daughter, Belle loved the small hydroponic gardening kit he got her. She didn’t cook much since she lived alone, but maybe she would cook more if she had her very own kitchen herb garden.
Mary Margaret had given her the blanket she’d knitted for her as well as the book Belle had specifically requested, and David gave her a headlamp for reading in the library. Unfortunately, the day after Christmas, Keith Nottingham did drop a gift off for her, but it was just a generic basket of lotions, and she could deal with that.
Belle kept the store closed between Christmas and New Year’s with Tim’s garbled blessing over the phone, but David drove her there every other day to check on Jaq and Gus. As much as she wanted to invite Mr. Gold to ring in the new year with her, she knew the best she could do was catch him as unaware as she had on Christmas Eve and ask him if he wanted to play chess, which she did manage to do once. They were currently tied two-to-two for wins.
So she rang in the new year with everyone at Granny’s like she did every year, kissing her dad on the cheek at midnight, and then went home to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling, and think about how Mary Margaret was going to have a baby in two days.
Fortunately, the due date in question was a Friday, and while she had skipped the last Friday in Mr. Gold’s office because he closed it for the employees, she didn’t want to skip it today. David dropped her off at 11:30 so she could check on the hamsters, and then she trudged through the snow to the empty Gold and Associates building.

Frasier (1993 and 2023)
Tumblr media
The 1990s was probably the last great era for the American Sitcom and the majority of television viewers would probably pick "Seinfeld" as their favorite. As much as I love "Seinfeld" and its brand of famous gags, one liners and character quips, "Frasier" is in a class of its own above. For 11 seasons, Frasier maintained its Moliere/Alan Ayckbourn wit and farce without missing a beat. Nearly 20 years after the perfectly written series finale, "Frasier" has been rebooted and things have changed, some for the better and the rest for the worst. Here is the rundown about what made the original series a classic and the reboot (so far) a shadow of its former self.
Tumblr media
TV Spinoffs are usually a hit or miss affair. The hits like "Laverne and Shirley" and "The Jeffersons" managed to remove themselves from their origin and create their own brand of humor. Others like "After MASH" and "Phyllis" were tedious affairs that forgot their roots and sailed into the sunset of mediocrity. And then you have "Frasier" which took the spinoff to brand new heights. Having already been an established supporting character in another massively successful series "Cheers", Frasier Crane was engrained in the collective consciousness of the prime time audience, so that was one notch in watching the pilot of the original "Frasier". The first thing was to reinvent Frasier as a radio psychiatrist which becomes the foundation for jokes about the human mind. But then you add supporting characters that are so multi-dimensional that they have to compete with the title character for the most laughs. That came in the form of David Hyde Pierce as Frasier's equally pompous psychiatrist brother Niles and John Mahoney as their blue collar, retired, disabled policeman father Martin. Watching the difference between tasting wine and singing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas to drinking beer and watching the ballgame on TV and you have a dynamic that is another foundation of excellent writing. At the same time, there's Peri Gilpin as Frasier's producer Roz who beds every man (single or married) in town and Jane Leeves as Daphne, Martin's in-house nurse and Niles' crush. When you have several running gags all synchronized in 11 amazing seasons that never jumped the shark, the possibilities are endless. Even recurring jokes like the rivalry between the Crane brothers, the elusive identity of Niles' wife Maris, or the random actions of Martin's dog Eddie, were add ons to an already colorful mosaic of wit and wisdom. Like the Sistine Chapel, or Bach's Goldberg Variations, Frasier is several fine tuned sequences that make up a Leviathan of a presentation. What can possibly go wrong?
Tumblr media
The reboot of "Frasier" in hindsight should never have happened because in the series finale, the viewer wanted Frasier to have a happy ending and fine true love with his last girlfriend Charlotte. That hope goes out the window and instead what we get is another chapter in our titular character's hapless life when he becomes a lecturer in Psychiatry at Harvard. In the original pilot, we got to know each character's strengths and flaws in only 22 minutes. With the reboot, it takes 2 episodes just to establish each character's back story. Now that Martin is dead and Niles & Daphne are MIA, the majority of the new characters are generic, paint by numbers creations. Frasier's son Frederick (Jack Cutmore-Scott) is blue collar like his grandfather and the deja vu dynamic is not played up for laughs. You have a storyline written in about Frederick's roommate Eve (Jess Salguero) that gets too convoluted and ends up like a subplot in a cheesy soap opera. Most unforgivably, there's Niles and Daphne's son David (Anders Keith) who is supposed to be an amalgam of his parents, but instead of having headstrong principles and acerbic banter, he's just obnoxiously atrocious. This isn't the offspring of a fascinating couple, it's a clone of Screech from "Saved By The Bell". The only thing that somewhat works and has any relevance to the original series is Frasier's scenes with his new colleagues at Harvard which includes his old college friend Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and department head Olivia (Toks Olagundoye). Alan is the new Niles in how he and Frasier exchange intellectual topics and if you can close your eyes, you'd think it was the Crane Brothers. Olivia is tolerable only when she's in the same room as Alan. Otherwise, her scenes with Frasier border on cringeworthy, which goes against the original formula of all the characters mingling with indefinite punchlines. Finally, Kelsey Grammer is at the helm of a rocky boat trying to steer it through choppy waves. He hasn't lost any of his charm but he can only do so much with what's written in the script.
Tumblr media
Only three episodes of the reboot have aired as of now (10/22/2023), and the show has a lot to live up to its source material. Roz and Frasier's ex wife Lilith are supposed to make appearances in future episodes. What will they bring to the table and will it rival the classic episodes? I'm not holding my breath, but do hope that the show improves itself.
Original: 10/10
Reboot: 6/10
