Carwood Lipton: “Henry the fifth was talking to his men and he said from this day to the ending of the world we and it shall be remembered. We lucky few, we band of brothers, for he who sheds his blood with me today shall be my brother.”

Cool Heritage/Family Facts about Band of Brothers Characters:
George Luz had Portugese-descended parents and nine siblings.
Darrell "Shifty" Powers had Indigenous heritage.
Eugene Roe was Cajun, as shown in the show, but his early life was most likely more interesting than we know. Historical records say Eugene was born in 1922 in Bayou Chene (translated from French as Oak Bayou), which was a small, unincorporated community located in the Atchafalaya Basin, which is the largest swamplands in the United States.
Bayou Chene was a community settled in the 1830s, located approximately 40 miles north of Morgan City, Louisiana. The U.S. post office was established there in 1858. The settlers there ran a church, a school, a merchandise store and the post office, which were all located on the bayou. In the 1920s it had approximately 500 residents, most of whom had lived there for generations after settling there from other communities both within and outside of Louisiana. They were swampers, lumberjacks, trappers, farmers, fishermen and moss pickers.
Despite occasional flooding, Bayou Chene thrived until the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 destroyed much of the community. This would have been when Eugene Roe was five years old.
The community rebuilt but declined after construction of the Atchafalaya Spillway levees and dredging of river channels caused repeated flooding of the community. While we know the Roes at one time relocated to Morgan City (Most likely due to the flooding), what used to be Bayou Chene now no longer exists, and now lies under 12 feet of silt. So when we talk about Eugene being bayou, the man was BAYOU.
Ronald Spiers was actually born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Lewis Nixon's mother, Doris Ryer Nixon, was an American civic leader, particularly on the home front during World War II. She became a national vice-president of the American Women's Voluntary Services (AWVS) during the war. The AWVS was a key organization for coordinating volunteer activities in support of the war effort. She had founded the California chapter, and had served as its first president.
She was also the founder and president of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., and state commander of the California Cancer Society.
The reason Joseph Liebgott was good at haircuts was because his father was a barber. He also spoke the Austrian dialect of German, which was often confused with Yiddish by other military members.

a note about draft registration
during the second world war, the united states selective service system conducted a total of six draft registrations, the records of which are held collectively in two groupings at the national personnel records centre in st. louis, missouri. members of easy company were drafted in all but one of these registrations from october 1940 through to december 1942. the six registrations are as follows:
16 october 1940: males aged 21 to 35 "within the continental united states". winters, nixon, welsh, toye, perconte and liebgott were among those registered on this date.
1 july 1941: males "who had reached 21 since the first registration". lipton and speirs were registered on this date.
16 february 1942: between the ages of 20 and 45 "who had not previously registered". roe, bull, malarkey and luz, among others, were registered on this date.
27 april 1942: between the ages of 46 to 65 "not eligible for military service". no known easy company members were registered on this date.
30 june 1942: between the ages of 18 to 20. talbert, webster, grant, guarnere, babe, shifty, skip and christenson, among others, were registered on this date.
10-31 december 1942: "those who reached the age of 18 after 12 november 1942". penkala, who turned 18 in august 1942 three months before the cutoff, was nonetheless among those registered in this period.
if you have a family member or ancestor who served in a branch of the us armed forces during either the first or second world war, chances are that you can find their registration card on databases like ancestry.com and familysearch.org.

Band of Brothers - The Terror AU, Continued
A continuation of this post
Tagging people who were interested in this - if you want to be added or removed just let me know!
@fearlessjones @kaikai1324 @antoniaminor @runn0ft
Denver 'Bull' Randleman and John Martin serve as Ice Masters on the HMS Erebus and Terror respectively. They are both experienced, having been on multiple Arctic expeditions before, often alongside each other, and as a result are held in high esteem by the rest of the crew. The pair trust each other more than they will ever trust a commander, as only they fully understand how dangerous the ice can be. Martin holds the ear of Captain Winters, who faithfully follows his advice. In contrast, Randleman finds Captain Sobel to be often dismissive of his knowledge. Still, he finds an eager audience in young Royal Marine Privates Garcia, Miller, and Hashey, who are all experiencing their first Naval posting and have never seen how badly an expedition such as this can turn.
Aboard the Terror, the Royal Marines are commanded by Sergeant Bill Guarnere, who - alongside Corporal Chuck Grant and Private Edward Heffron - keeps largely to himself. The Marines are somewhat isolated from the rest of the crew, as they are the only men on board permitted to arm themselves, and lack the naval experience boasted of by the others. However, as it becomes more and more evident that the Terror and Erebus will not be unstuck from the ice any time soon, with more and more men lost to the mysterious Tuunbaq with each passing day, the marines find themselves thrust into the limelight by the rest of the crew, who view them as key to their survival.
On the HMS Erebus, Sergeant Darrell Powers and Corporal Donald Hoobler find their loyalty to their commanders jeopardised as their chances of salvation grow ever slimmer. Shifty struggles to come to terms with his shifting allegiances as Sobel's ineffective leadership and Nixon's declining health put them at a disadvantage, and the Royal Marines begin to ally themselves across the two ships, both bringing together the crews and setting them further apart than ever before.
Roy Cobb does not believe in his leaders. He is here because he had no option, driven by a lack of wealth and education - caulking was never supposed to be his life's work, and he won't pretend to be happy about his position. When the crew find themselves stranded in the ice, he grows ever more bitter at the state of affairs, and as the rest of the crew begin to realise the severity of their situation, people begin to listen to Cobb's complaints - they let him speak his discontent where they once dismissed it with a roll of the eyes. He finds himself holding more influence than he has ever had before, and will use this newfound power to his advantage no matter what damage it could do to others.
Other crewmates:
Robert 'Popeye' Wynn - Boatswain, HMS Terror
Floyd Talbert - Carpenter, HMS Terror
Donald Malarkey - Engineer, HMS Terror
Pat Christenson - Quartermaster, HMS Terror
Frank Perconte - Blacksmith, HMS Terror
Joe Toye - Leading Stoker, HMS Terror
Alex Penkala - Ship's Cook, HMS Terror
Albert Blithe - Seaman, HMS Terror - Found infirm and returned to England from the Whalefish Islands
John Hall -Seaman, HMS Terror - One of the sailors who died and was buried on Beechey Island on the way to the Passage
Ralph Spina - Head surgeon, HMS Erebus
Warren 'Skip' Muck - Carpenter, HMS Erebus
Joseph Liebgott - Engineer, HMS Erebus
Walter 'Smokey' Gordon - Caulker, HMS Erebus
George Luz - Leading Stoker, HMS Erebus
(When assigning characters' roles among each ship, I tried to consider the pre- and post-war professions of the real-life veterans, applying these skills as best I could to the positions aboard each ship - for example, Alex Penakala worked as a cook before the war, and Joe Toye worked in a coal mine, hence his position stoking the steam engines.)

DARRELL FUN FACTS!
One of Darrell's favorite youtubers are Brian David Gilbert! Vi uses his popcorn recipe often on movie nights with Chazz
Chazz would sometimes forget her Leatherface plushie at Darrell's house whenever it came over that he just decided to gift it to Darrell. Darrell was initially scared of the plushie at first, but soon warmed up to him and sees the Leatherface plushie as a protector of sorts
Darrell has two playlists: one with music he thinks that others would find palatable (and that he likes) and another which is all the songs he likes, with no filter. Vi's worried vir second playlist would get ridiculed, since it's more self-indulgent
I need you to know lady gaga is in the playlists. Okay.
Darrell is in constant contact with his parents, usually calling them after vir workshift

My Dad, Butch Sheffield was very proud of this mission Operation Thunderhead” to alert the POW’s that it was time to escape. He wrote the mission plan and flew on both May 2 and May 4 missions. I will share later what he wrote about this mission. The flowing was written by Paul Crickmore.
By 1972, it has been reported that covert communication into Hoa Lo had become possible by the limited use of a radio, infiltrated into the prison by the CIA. A plan formulated by Capt John Dramesi to escape with a fellow POW between Jun. 1 and 15, steal a boat and travel down the Red River to the Gulf of Tonkin, where they could be rescued by a team of US special forces was communicated to the camp’s senior ranking officer (SRO). Once approved, it was communicated to the ONI and then escalated to the very top of the chain of command – the commander-in-chief, President Richard Nixon, who also approved the audacious plan.
In April 1972, the submarine USS Grayback (LPSS 574), under the command of Cdr John Chamberlain, slipped its moorings at Subic Bay, Philippines and put to sea. Onboard was US Navy SEAL Team One and Underwater Demolition Team 11 (UDT-11). The plan, Operation Thunderhead, developed by Lt Cdr Edwin Towers, the officer in charge (OIC), involved the SEAL team infiltrating an island in the Red River estuary using underwater swimmer delivery vehicles (SDVs). From there they’d provide surveillance, which would be enhanced by up to four flights per day of a wider area conducted by HH-3As from Detachment 110, Helicopter Support Squadron 7 (HC-7), from USS
Midway.  To cover Dramesi’s escape plan, the operation was to be run from May 29 to Jun. 19.
To ensure that the POWs directly involved in Operation Thunderhead were fully aware of the CinC’s approval of the plan, a unique covert signal was devised – two tri-sonic booms, exactly 15 seconds apart, would ring out over Hanoi on May 2 and 4. To generate this ‘sound of freedom’, the services of two SR-71s would be required. However, since the mission was so critical, a third airborne spare would also be launched as a hedge against any last-minute mechanical problems that might interfere with the signal’s timing.
At precisely 14:16 on May 2, 1972, Maj Bob Spencer and Maj Butch Sheffield were airborne in ‘979, followed just two minutes later by Lt Col Darryl Cobb and Maj Reggie Blackwell in ‘980. At 15:22 Maj Dave Fruehauf and Maj Gil Martinez launched in ‘968.
On May 4, Majs Tom Pugh and Ronnie Rice approached Hanoi in aircraft ‘968 at 75,000ft from the south, while Majs Bob Spencer and Butch Sheffield maintained 80,000ft in ‘980 and flew across the target from the south-east. Meanwhile, Lt Col Darrel Cobb and Maj Reggie Blackwell were the airborne spare in ‘978; they were to cross the ‘Hilton’ at 70,000ft from the west should either of the primary aircraft have to abort. When the pre-arranged code word was transmitted, Darryl broke off his run short of the target area.
Both missions were termed ‘entirely successful’ and accomplished their objective within the very tight time constraints, while reconnaissance gathering was of secondary importance to the signal.
Unknown to the planners on the ‘outside’, however, there was a major issue with the SRO in Dramesi’s room, who’d become aware of the plan. Despite the escape committee having determined that the plan had a 90 percent chance of success, he’d gone to the camp SRO and reminded him of the repercussions felt by the rest of the POWs after Dramesi’s and Atterberry’s earlier escape attempt. The appeal caused the camp SRO to reverse his earlier decision.
He withdrew permission to conduct the escape and ordered the escape committee to stand down. Since there weren’t the means to communicate this decision quickly enough, Operation Thunderhead was launched regardless. It was eventually called off after a number of mishaps, one of which resulted in the death of Navy SEAL Lt Melvin Spencer Dry.
