BAM-WRONG
we have fire hydrants that we break open
hi!! could i get 56: ‘someone accepting the bad parts of you without judging’ with doris and bill? that’s a friendship for the ages right there!!
Tumblr media
Aw, bless you for saying so, Nonnie. I really like their freindship, too - they don’t have time for each other’s bullshit.
Also, lord love me, I keep writing summer nights on porches and I don’t know why.
There was nothing like a Philadelphia summer.
Doris thought she knew summer, after growing up in Chicago - the feeling of baking as you walked to the L stop, of hoping the sun was in just the right place so you could wait in the shadow of the station overhang. But Chicago had the lake, with its cool breezes and beaches and the spray off Buckingham Fountain, and Philly had...nothing.
The sun had gone down and the sidewalks of the neighborhood were still steaming, most of the residents out on their porches with glasses of pale wine and fans, someone's gramophone warbling some Italian folksong into the night. This still felt like home, Doris mused, even if the houses looked a little different from the bungalows and the streets had different names. She knew these people, almost as if she'd grown up here herself. People stopped by the Guarnere house and just assumed she was another cousin in from out of town. ("The way we argue, you fit right in!" Bill had said with a grin, his arm around her shoulder like a brother.)
She watched the kids playing ball in the street and half wished she'd brought a fan herself. Behind her, the screen door opened and Bill let himself out, stomping over on his crutches to join her, awkwardly, on the porch swing.
"You know, you're a real idiot sometimes," she said, offhandedly. "One leg and half a brain and you're still going on about Frannie wanting to marry you." It had come up again tonight at dinner - an old argument re-hashed for the out of town guest. (His mother had even lapsed into dialect - always a sign of a good debate.)
"Don't that make Frannie an idiot for saying yes?"
She snorted. Men. "No, Frannie's smart, and I won't hear a word said otherwise."
"How do you figure that? She's marrying a guy with one leg and half a brain."
Doris turned a little on the swing, knocking her knee up onto the seat so she could face Bill, really see him. "She knows exactly what she's getting and she's not out to change you. Which is more than most women getting married can say, and you're lucky to get it."
If Bill was expecting a comeback, that wasn't it, and it drew him up short. "So why am I the idiot again?"
Doris rolled her eyes. "Because you keep thinking she doesn't love you! Bill, you keep second-guessing and putting yourself down and you've got to stop. She knows who she picked. And she wouldn't take anyone else."
Bill stared for a moment, nodded, smiled, basking in the truth as only a good friend could deliver. There weren't too many people who could say they could strike Bill Guarnere speechless, but Doris Russo always counted herself as one of them, and it was a skill she took particular pride in. "You know, you're a real idiot sometimes," he managed, after a few minutes of surprised silence.
Doris smiled, knowing the insult was simply being shoved back to save a little face. "Yeah?"
"For being friends with a lug like me."
"Takes one to know one, Bill. We still going to see Babe tomorrow?"
He nodded, and she turned back out to the street and the kids playing ball and the folk music, breathing in the hot air of the July night. There had been good food, and arguments, and tomorrow they would see their friends. All was right in the world, and nothing could shake it.

Guide for the recent BoB fandom information explosion
Essentially, the US Army and Heritage Education Center possesses a vast collection of materials related to Dick Winters, which served as the original source for writing the book Band of Brothers and for the production of the TV series. This includes a huge amount of photocopies of Winters' personal papers and personnel documents; photocopies of correspondence, memoirs, news clippings, oral history transcripts, and photographs from the men in Easy Company.
There are a total of 20 boxes, containing 100+ PDF documents that can be read online, involving most of the E Company soldiers whose names we can recognize.
These materials may have been on the internet for many years, but no one paid attention until very recently.
Here are some notable files among these materials: The complete catalog of the Dick Winters collection
