Michael Brun Presents BAYO at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! at Lena Horne Bandshell

On Saturday, June 15, 2024, Celebrate Brooklyn! held a benefit concert of their 46th season with Michael Brun Presents: BAYO at Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park. The outdoor featured DJ sets from Kolo and Brun himself. There were live performances by Haitian artists along with others from the diaspora such as Paul Beaubrun, Sarina, Anie Alerte, Danola, Pierre Jean, Troubleboy Hitmaker, Oxlade (who came to Brooklyn from Nigeria for the event), AndyBeatz, J Perry, J Balvin, Maxwell, Colmix & Tonymix, Lakou Muzik, and Tabou Combo. Tabou Combo were given a proclamation from New York City to help close the special event.

I captured the event as a house photographer for Celebrate Brooklyn! and some images can be found in the gallery here. I’ll be at the park throughout this season and again later today for Juneteenth UNITYFEST.

It was beautiful.

The way her hair and spirits fell simultaneously. The way that smile turned wickedly, curling up and up and up. The way the pill felt on her tongue, in her throat, from her palm against the other’s lips.

Her chokes and sputters, her innocent grin, it was beautiful.

Violet eyes widened as she tried to eject the small almost pill — it was like a drug, yet it wasn’t. It wasn’t hard. It wasn’t manufactured. It was something of which she had watched the creation of. She had seen everything in it, knew each component well.

One would make her puke, unless she was lucky. One would make her hyper, unless she was lucky. One would make her cold, unless she was lucky.

…

It went on for two hours, ish. She didn’t know. She couldn’t recall. Everything had gone by in a fierce blur of torment, chills and vomit and not enough exhaustion to let her rest. She still felt sick. She didn’t want to feel sick, though. After all, she had made her happy.

She made her happy, and that should be enough for her. If it wasn’t, she’d simply have to ignore it. Ignore the stress, the nausea, the weakness. Perhaps she could replace it.

Her room was covered in soot. She should clean it. It can’t be good for her. She was needed healthy.

She was needed.

The unlit candles called to her, lined against the window where curtains once sat. She could hear it creeping back to her, those urges she could never quite contain in moments like these. She wasn’t strong enough to resist, not anymore. But whenever she dipped into it, even just her hair, she felt so, so powerful.

The young woman took the match out of her pocket, anxieties and struggles and all of her thoughts screaming so loudly at her until she took out the first tissue

and let it burn.
