Hi! Hope you're well :) weird question maybe, but how is it moving to Denmark and living there as a foreigner? I've been a couple times, loved the country and am thinking of maybe moving there. Are people welcoming? I've have great experience there, but I've heard from others that it may be hard to make friends/know new people, and I'd be moving there on my own so that's kinda something I'd need 😆 thanks for all the great content!
yo!
my feelings on denmark are complicated. before anything else, i love it here. the climate and culture (generally speaking) are just about perfect for what i want out of life. there's very little emphasis on hierarchy and a good balance between collectivistic and individualistic values. this is a great country for a queer person to live in. taxes are high, but i find that that's a very small price to pay for free healthcare, education, and subsidized childcare among other things.
as a foreigner... eh. the first thing to keep in mind is that denmark has some of the strictest immigration rules in europe, so if you're looking to move here, make sure you look into whether it's a realistic venture. a lot of people (especially those with danish spouses) actually move to sweden and commute to copenhagen from there because sweden's rules are less uh... tyrannical. lol.
and there are other issues, of course. i miss diversity a lot. there's a racism issue that very few people seem to want to engage with or even acknowledge. i love the summers because the days are so long but the winters are so so so dark.
as far as if people are welcoming or not, it's kind of a mixed bag. my experience is colored by the fact that i came here via marriage to a native dane who already had his social network (and i also don't really need many friends/social interaction). i think, personally, unless you were going to university, it can be very hard to make friends without an in-road. it's not that danes aren't friendly, because they definitely can be (particularly in nordjylland, where i live), but they often stick with the connections they had from childhood. they aren't really looking for friends past that.
that being said, i think once you truly manage to make friends with a dane, you have one for life.
that's not to be a hater entirely. obviously every country has its own problems. but if you're thinking of moving here (particularly as a poc), i would keep these things in mind. i've lived here for years now. i speak the language fluently. i would consider myself well-integrated.
but i think i'll always be considered a foreigner in denmark, even if i get citizenship someday.
all that being said, if you do end up here, drop me a line. there's a guest room in aalborg for you, if you'd like. <3

EP elections 2024: triumph of right-wing opposition, collapse of Greens, demand for change of course
Right-wing parties have made significant gains in the European Parliament elections. According to the first results provided by the EU, far-right parties will dominate the transnational parliament, while the Greens were the hardest hit.
French President Emmanuel Macron suffered a crushing defeat in exit polls, while Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party won a convincing victory that underlines her credibility as a candidate for the French presidency in 2027.
According to the first exit polls, the National Rally party won about 32 per cent of the vote, 10 points more than in the last EU elections in 2019, and about 17 points ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s party.
In Germany, the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party came second behind the opposition Conservatives with 16.5 per cent of the vote, up from 11 per cent in 2019, according to exit polls released by public broadcaster ARD. The Greens lost the most in Germany on Sunday, dropping 8.6 percentage points to 11.9 per cent. Voters penalised them for the cost of policies to cut CO2 emissions – in line with expectations for environmental parties across Europe.
In the Netherlands, where voting took place on Thursday, polls showed that nationalist Geert Wilders’ anti-immigration party would win seven of the 29 seats in the EU assembly, just one less than the alliance of the Social Democrats and Greens.
Meanwhile in Austria, the right-wing Freedom Party is the likely winner of the vote, according to a poll conducted over the past week and released after polls closed on Sunday night.
After the polls closed in Greece, the first exit polls show the ruling New Democracy party in first place with between 28 and 32 per cent. The Greek Solution party is gaining between 7.6 and 10 per cent, while the ultra-conservative Niki is on top with between 2.9 and 4.9 per cent.
Spanish exit polls show Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) vying for the top spot with the conservative Popular Party (PP).
According to a poll by Danish national TV channel DR, SF, the Socialist People’s Party, which in English is called the Green Left, will get the most votes – 18.4 per cent – and three of the 15 Danish seats in the European Parliament.
Pro-European coalition is still in place
On the other hand, the new balance in the EU parliament shows that a stable pro-European coalition is a realistic scenario, despite the rise of the far-right across Europe.
The centre-right EPP, the EU Socialists and the liberal Renewal could form a majority of 403 seats.
The election result raises the possibility that the EPP candidate Ursula von der Leyen will be re-elected as head of the EU Commission. Christopher Glück, managing director at the political analysis firm Forefront Advisers, told Euractiv:
“The majority of the centrist three looks pretty solid […] probably ahead of 410 seats.”
This year’s European Parliament elections are the first since Britain left the EU. In total, more than 360 million Europeans could vote in the election of 720 MEPs. This year’s vote was closely watched around the world. It is predicted that a strong electoral performance by the far-right could reshape alliances in parliament and dramatically change the future of the entire European Union.

I wish i had more immigrants around me that felt such a strong push and longing to go back home as i do, i miss having people to speak icelandic with that wasnt just my own family members. Unfortunately no political party in iceland is as left as i am, which sucks, im very politically active in norway, being a representative for my state/fylke(i dont know the most accurate translation) and in my cities youth council. I think that would be the only thing i would miss of norway.
other than that, not much, sure the nature is really nice but ive never connected to this place, or this culture. I never connected much with the language and i dont like being viewed as norwegian, its like having an identity just pushed on me because its "close enough"
i think theres been enough wars in the world that show that just because two nationalities are similar, they dont want to be grouped together. I miss when my family actually did icelandic christmas traditions, i miss hangikjöt, that we cannot get properly sent from iceland anymore.
dunno why this post is so sad im in a weird mood?? is this how emil steilsson felt under danish rule/hj

Denmark and Germany announce arrests of terror suspects, including suspected Hamas members
By Jan M. Olsen and Kirsten Grieshaber, December 15, 2023
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen speaks with the media as she arrives for an EU summit at the European Council building in Brussels, Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023. European Union leaders, in a two-day summit will discuss the latest developments in Russia's war or aggression against Ukraine and continued EU support for Ukraine and its people. (AP Photo/ Virginia Mayo)
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Denmark and Germany announced Thursday arrests of several terror suspects, including alleged Hamas members suspected of plotting attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions in Europe over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
The announcements were issued separately and it was unclear how the arrests were connected and if they were the result of coordinated actions, or even possibly one operation spanning the continent.
Danish police said three people were arrested across Denmark while a fourth person was detained in the Netherlands on suspicion of plotting to carry out "an act of terror."
Officials in Copenhagen did not provide any details beyond saying the arrests had "threats abroad" and were "related to criminal gangs," singling out the banned, predominantly immigrant gang Loyal to Familia that had long been behind feuds, violence, robberies, extortion and drug sales in the Danish capital.
However, Flemming Drejer, the operative head of Denmark's Security and Intelligence Service,
cryptically said police had "a special focus" on Jewish institutions. He said Denmark was not changing its terror threat level, which has been at "serious," the second-highest level, since 2010.
"Persons abroad have been charged. ... It is a serious situation," Drejer told a news conference, adding that the arrests were carried out in "collaboration with our foreign partners" and that those arrested were part of "a network."
The suspects would face a custody hearing within 24 hours, he said, likely behind "double closed doors" - meaning he could not give any details about the case.
"This is extremely serious," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Thursday from Brussels where she was attending a European Union Summit.
"It is of course completely unacceptable in relation to Israel and Gaza, that there is someone who takes a conflict somewhere else in the world into Danish society," she added.
In the Netherlands, police said a 57-year-old Dutch man was arrested in the city of Rotterdam, based on a request from German authorities, according to spokesman Jesse Brobbel. On Tuesday, the Dutch counterterrorism agency raised the country's threat alert to its second-highest level, saying the possibility of an attack in the country is now "substantial."
In Germany, authorities said three suspected members of the Palestinian militant Hamas group who were allegedly planning attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe were arrested on Thursday.
Two men were arrested in Berlin and one in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, while a fourth suspect was temporarily detained in Berlin, Germany's federal prosecutor said. Authorities only identified the men by their first names and the first initial of their last name, in line with German privacy rules.
The four were Abdelhamid AI A., born in Lebanon; Egyptian national Mohamed B.; Dutch national Nazih R. and Ibrahim El-R., born in Lebanon.
The authorities alleged three of the men "have been longstanding members of Hamas and have participated in Hamas operations abroad." They said the suspect were "closely linked to the military branch's leadership" of Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann thanked the authorities for the arrests and said that "attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions have also increased in our country in recent weeks" due to the Israel-Hamas war.
It was not immediately clear if and how the Danish and the German arrests were connected.
In Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu's office lauded what it said were seven Hamas suspects arrested in Europe, but attributed the arrests to Danish police.
The prime minister's office said Denmark had arrested seven operatives acting on behalf of Hamas and "thwarted an attack aimed at killing innocent citizens on European sail." Netanyahu's office said Israel's intelligence agencies "will continue to operate ... in order to repel the intentions of Hamas and eliminate its capabilities."
The discrepancies between the Danish, German and Israeli statements could not immediately be resolved.
Earlier this month, the European Union's home affairs commissioner, Ylva Johansson, warned that Europe faced a "huge risk of terrorist attacks" over the Christmas holiday period due to the fallout from the fighting in Gaza.
Denmark's foreign intelligence service, known as FE, said Thursday in its annual assessment for 2023 that "the war between Israel and Hamas was once again shown that unresolved conflicts in Europe's immediate area can escalate rapidly and create widespread regional instability."
Grieshaber reported from Berlin.

The new government's programme includes the introduction of a citizenship test as part of its plans to tighten the requirements for obtaining Finnish citizenship or permanent residence in Finland.
In its programme for government published last month, Finland's right-wing ruling coalition said it plans to introduce a citizenship test as part of efforts to tighten rules around the granting of permanent residence and citizenship permits.
"Passing a citizenship test and a language test will be made a requirement for naturalisation," the programme states.
The Finnish citizenship test will be modelled on similar evaluations used in other European countries.
Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen (Finns) told Yle that her ministry has started work on drafting the citizenship test, but the process will take time.
Examples from across Europe
Among the EU's 27 countries, nearly half — or 13 — currently have a citizenship test. They include the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hungary and Estonia.
In addition, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein — which are not members of the EU but are part of the Schengen area — also have a citizenship test.
In general, the tests feature questions about the history, culture, society and population of the host country. The assessments may also ask about living in a democracy and other aspects of a particular country's politics, such as in Estonia and Greece, or about the country's national anthem, as in Latvia.
In each country, the test is organised by an official body.
Rantanen previously told tabloid Ilta-Sanomat that the exams could be organised by community colleges, for example.
From multiple choice quizzes to interviews
In an interview with Yle soon after taking office, Rantanen said that her ministry will perform a "u-turn" on immigration and refugee policies during her term, and she reiterated that position this week.
"I am glad that we are reaching the pan-Nordic level, and that we will not be the only country in the Nordic region with lax rules," she said.
Among the Nordic countries, the citizenship test is used in Denmark and Norway.
The Danish test has 45 multiple-choice questions about the country's society, culture and history — 35 of which are based on provided study material while 5 questions deal with topical issues taken from Danish media and politics. There are also five questions on Danish values.
At least 36 correct answers are needed in order to pass the Danish test. In addition, they must correctly answer at least four of the 10 questions that are not included in the study material.
The citizenship test in Norway has 36 questions, of which 24 must be correct. Norwegian authorities also offer the option of completing a social studies course (75 hours) with a final exam in Norwegian.
Luxembourg also provides the option of taking a social studies course instead of the citizenship test.
In Slovakia, there is no formal citizenship test but the required language test does ask basic information about the country.
Study material helps participants
In almost every European country where a citizenship test is mandatory, participants are provided with study material.
In Spain, the test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions selected from a list of 300, which can be practised in advance with an app.
The tests are also often multiple-choice, although one notable exception to this is France, where the 'test' is conducted as an interview.
In Europe, the citizenship test is often multiple-choice, but one exception is France, where the exam is conducted as an interview. Study material is also provided.
In addition to the citizenship test, each country has other conditions which must be met if the applicant is to receive citizenship or a permanent residence permit — such as a certain income threshold.
Although Austria has no citizenship exam, people applying for citizenship or permanent residence must have lived continuously in the country for at least 10 years and prove their intentions to stay.
Rantanen noted that the proposed citizenship test is also intended to help speed up integration into Finnish society.
"The idea is for people to integrate into Finland, to learn our language and our social system. With integration, the citizenship and language tests should not prove to be too difficult," Rantanen said.
Citizenship test previously proposed in 2019
The possibility of Finland introducing a citizenship test has been mooted before.
In 2019, then-Interior Minister Kai Mykkänen (NCP) presented a package of measures he said was aimed at preventing and combating crimes committed by foreign-background individuals, especially sexual offences.
The draft bill at the time stated that "the practices of other countries in the use of citizenship tests will be studied and a test suitable for Finland will be introduced".
However, the citizenship test was not advanced during the following government's term in office.

Lima: Central City Walking Tour
On my walk to PukuPuku cafe I passed through Parque Kennedy and saw all the cat residents snoozing on pieces of cardboard laid on the grass for them. I heard crying above me, there was a tiny kitten up the tree but I couldn't do anything to try and get it down. My coffee was just as good as the one in their Arequipa branch, I sat outside to enjoy it as some businessmen came in for espressos on their way to the office - it reminded me a bit of Italy as they drank them standing there for a few minutes then left. I then went for a pancake breakfast at Piñeiros thinking I had plenty of time but then it took more than 30 minutes to get my food so I had to shovel it down quickly and run around the corner to meet up with the walking tour guide Jorge. Once everyone had joined (around 15 people) Jorge helped us all take the bus network to the central city, we'd all brought exact change as requested. The bus network was actually fantastic. Jorge scared us by saying there's a lot of crime and petty theft on the public transit so watch our belongings closely as we are targets. A large group of tourists though, we drew attention to ourselves and probably even the most hardened criminals didn't want to chance it. The bus had its own central lane in the middle of the highway, with concrete blockades on either side so it wasn't going out into traffic and traffic couldn't enter the bus lane. Because of this layout it was incredibly efficient and faster than all the traffic on the road even with all the stops along the way. I would love to see something like this implemented from Denver to Frisco and Copper Mountain as it would make public transit flow freely despite the frequent highway standstills. Jorge showed us how to use the ticket machine to buy a ticket back and then led us over to La Merced Church in central Lima which would be our starting point. We met up with some more tourists there and began our tour at this Baroque church that was constructed under the Spanish empire, followed by Casa O'Higgins which memorialises Bernardo O'Higgins who played a key role in the independence of Chile from the Spanish empire. We then visited Fotografia Central an old photo studio, and then an old mansion which had unfortunately succumb to humidity and had not been looked after by immigrants who took it over. We stopped in a shady spot where Jorge told us there are 43 districts in Lima home to over 10 million people, the 4th largest city in South America after Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro. He also explained that the main sport in Peru after football is eating and we should not ignore "chifa" which is the Peruvian Chinese food and is very unique cuisine. We then visited the municipal theatre, and St Dominic Church where Jorge explained a few historical terms criollo (meaning born in Latin America) and peninsulares (born in Spain). The criollos were second class citizens during Spanish rule. The origin of the city name Lima came from the Quechua indigenous people calling it "rimac" meaning "noisy river" in their native language but the Spanish hearing "Lima" instead. The last part of the tour was Plaza de Armas, and Jorge pointed out the house of the president because of course he lives in the main square! We took a group photo and gave our tips to Jorge before splitting up. I'd been chatting with a British guy Tom, and British girl Ellie who both happened to be from the same area there was also a guy I can only describe as "Berliner" because he had such an unwashed Berlin resident vibe although I think he was actually Dutch or Danish or something... Ellie was into it so Tom and I took a couple photos of each other in the main square and then I gave him 10 soles for his bus ticket back as he hadn't brought enough money with him. I stayed to explore more on my own though, I love breaking away from the group!

News from Africa, 19 June
Hage Geingob will host Danish PM Mette Frederiksen and Dutch PM Mark Rutte today in Namibia. Green hydrogen will reportedly be among the subjects discussed.
2. Namibia's proposed visa exemption for Chinese nationals is a bilateral agreement that would benefit both countries, according to China's ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping.
Some Namibian politicians have objected to the proposal, with opposition leader McHenry Venaani claiming it is a "hoodwinking process" for Chinese prisoners to come to the country, and aspiring presidential candidate Job Amupanda alleging that it involves a deal between the ruling party and China to garner support for next year's elections.
The proposed agreement's main goal is to attract Chinese tourists and help Namibia become competitive again after the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Namibia's minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Albert Kawana.
3. Angola and Zambia signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in information technology, including digital transformation, AI, and space technology.
The agreement includes the establishment of direct cross-border optical fibre backbone connectivity between the two countries, scheduled to happen this month.
The collaboration is expected to help improve the regulation of the Angolan and Zambian telecom markets and lead to improved coverage and quality of ICT services provided in both countries.
4. Namibia is embarking on a journey of digital transformation to modernize various aspects of the country's life.
The Department of Home Affairs, Immigration and Security recently announced the successful implementation of an online passport application system, a major step towards delivering home affairs government services through digital channels. Namibia is partnering with Estonia to bring government services online and gradually prepare citizens for the transformation ahead. The Vice Minister of ICT recognizes the importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) for African technology spaces, but stresses the need for a clear roadmap or strategy to ensure that solutions developed in Africa fit the lifestyle on the continent.
5. Nigeria has 71 million people living in extreme poverty and 133 million people are classified as multidimensionally poor, according to 2023 data from the World Poverty Clock and the National Bureau of Statistics.
6. The Bank of Namibia increased the repo rate to safeguard the dollar-rand peg and contain inflationary pressures, but this will severely impact consumers who rely on debt to survive.
The governor expressed empathy for people losing their homes due to rising debt costs, and urged the nation to find better solutions to keep more Namibians in their homes while maintaining financial stability.
7. The fighting in Sudan has caused a surge in refugees fleeing to South Sudan, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.
The UN has called for $253 million in funding to respond to the crisis, but donations have been slow to come in.
The lack of resources and funding has led to inadequate food, water, and sanitation facilities in transit camps, resulting in malnutrition, disease, and preventable deaths.

William Alexander Leidesdorff, Jr. (October 23, 1810 – May 18, 1848) was one of the earliest biracial African American US citizens in California and one of the founders of the city that became San Francisco. A highly successful, enterprising businessman, he was a West Indian immigrant of African Cuban, possibly Carib, Danish, and Jewish ancestry. He became a citizen in New Orleans in 1834. He migrated to Alta California in 1841, then under Mexican rule, settling in Yerba Buena, a village of about 30 Mexican and European families.
Born in Christiansted in Saint Croix when the Virgin Islands were under Danish rule. He was the oldest son of four children of Danish sugar plantation manager Wilhelm Alexander Leidesdorff and his common-law wife Anna Marie Sparks, of African and Spanish descent.
He became a Mexican citizen in 1844 and received a land grant from the Mexican government, 8 Spanish leagues, or 35,500 acres south of the American River, known as Rancho Rio de los Americanos. He served as US Vice Consul to Mexico at the Port of San Francisco beginning in 1845. He was President of the San Francisco school board and elected as City Treasurer. Shortly before his death, vast amounts of gold were officially reported on his Rancho Rio De los Americanos. By the time his estate was auctioned off in 1856, it was worth more than $1,445,000, not including vast quantities of gold mined upon his land.
International Leidesdorff Bicentennial Celebrations featured the “Golden Legacy of William Alexander Leidesdorff, Jr.” On October 22, 2011, on his native isle of Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands, a special event was to highlight the season of celebrations. He is recognized as the “African Founding Father of California”, as noted by the California State Legislature. 2011 was the United Nations International Year for People of African Descent. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

EU top court to review Denmark’s ‘ghetto law’ for potential breach of anti-discrimination rules
On Monday (30 September), the EU supreme court will hear arguments on whether the Danish law limiting the concentration of ethnic minorities in certain neighbourhoods violates EU anti-discrimination law. A case before the High Court of Eastern Denmark between the Danish state and tenants in communities subject to the Danish 'ghetto law' has been halted, pending an opinion from the EU Court of Justice (CJEU). The CJEU will assess whether the Danish law’s criterion – classifying neighbourhoods as 'ghettos' if the proportion of immigrants and descendants from non-Western countries exceeds 50% – breaches the EU's Race Equality Directive, a law from 2000 that safeguards ethnic minorities from discrimination.

But any attacks on innocent people and organizations in other countries, and making a target of the Jewish people as a whole, is unacceptable.

EU Supreme Court to review Danish “ghetto law” for possible breach of anti-discrimination rules
The European Union’s Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether a Danish law restricting the concentration of ethnic minorities in certain neighbourhoods violates EU anti-discrimination law.
A case before the High Court of Eastern Denmark between the Danish state and tenants in communities covered by the Danish “ghetto law” has been suspended pending the judgement of the EU Court of Justice (CJEU).
The CJEU will assess whether the Danish law violates the EU’s Race Equality Directive, which protects ethnic minorities from discrimination. The so-called “ghetto law” in Denmark, officially known as the Parallel Society Package, was passed in 2018 to address social problems in certain low-income neighbourhoods, often referred to as “ghettos.”
The law aims to reduce the concentration of immigrant communities, reduce unemployment and improve educational standards. It provides stricter penalties for certain offences committed in such areas, requires residents to have a higher level of proficiency in the Danish language, and includes a policy to reduce the number of non-Westerners by demolishing or converting public housing.
However, the law has been criticised for discriminating against and stigmatising immigrant communities.

The CJEU finds language requirements in Danish rules on family reunification illegal
On 22 December 2022, the Court of Justice of the European Union handed down its judgment in case C-279/21, where we represent a Turkish citizen and his Turkish spouse.
The judgment means that Danish family reunification rules, with a requirement that the Turkish worker who resides legally in Denmark, pass a Danish test that proves a certain knowledge of Danish, in order for the foreign spouse to be granted a residence permit, are consider in violation with Article 13 of Decision No. 1/80.
The Court of Justice found that such a rule requirement cannot be justified by an aim of ensuring the successful integration of the spouse, as the Danish legislation neither includes the foreign spouse's own conditions which could ensure integration nor other factors that prove that the worker in question is actually already to be considered integrated .
With the judgment, a language requirement linked to family reunification for Turkish citizens living in Denmark is found to be in violation of EU law.
More about the decision can be found here.
The Danish Immigration Service has now put cases that may be affected by the judgment on hold.
If you need help with a similar case or want an assessment of whether you can request a case where you have received a rejection , reopened, please contact us.

OKAY SO HERE IS WHAT I HAVE FOR THE AU SO FAR
The Ton would be a mix of people from the JLA (I'm imagining someone like Dinah being a Lady Danbury type, someone who would act as a mentor and guide to our mains) and the typical DC villains (In this context none of them are actually evil, theyre just catty, snobbish rich people)
The Monarch? Lex Luthor.
So I'm imagining Morgans dad would be a danish immigrant, who married a commoner and they have their daughter Morgan. Theyre not nobility or part of the Ton, but the king hires him bc he's a brilliant scientist/inventor, and he's given the title of Lord and ownership of some land in return for his work.
So Morgan was raised as a commoner for the first 14 years or so of her life, but with her fathers elevated rank, she's suddenly thrust into this high society. And she doesn't know the social rules - also she's Morgan so she probably doesn't care much about it. I'm thinking she misses just being allowed to do whatever she wants, since her mom wasn't strict and her father was absent. The two of them lived in this little cottage in the country, while the dad traveled around and made a name for himself. Then, he's hired by the king and they suddenly move into this London estate. To her, her new status as a Lady isn't seen as an improvement - especially bc her dad is a social climber that's desperate to elevate himself and his family and everything she does is scrutinized by him. I'm thinking that Abigail is actually dead in this story? Maybe. I'm not sure what her role is, otherwise, and I think having Morgan be alone with no one to support her makes for better drama.
She's clearly an outsider, and the Ton doesn't see their family as part of high society. Born a commoner, always a commoner. However, because Henrik has such favor with the, frankly, scary king, they can't say the quiet part out loud, and thus the family is invited to every event - where Morgan is forced to endure every underhanded compliment and hidden jab at her character. And true! She's not very good at being a Lady. She's MORGAN - we all know how she is.
She'll be about 19 when the story starts, so she'll have been part of high society for a while and have somewhat settled into a quiet resentment of the Ton, but also accepted that this is where she's at, at the moment.
-
Dick is the adopted eldest son of the Duke of Wayne (or something along those lines lmao, point is Bruce is like the cream of the crop and has a Dukedom and is hella rich).
Bruce Wayne never got married, and people suspect he's impotent, but he's adopted a bunch of kids and had legal documents drawn up that ensures Dick will inherit the estate as if he was Bruce's real son.
HOWEVER. Since Dick was born, not just to commoners, but to CIRCUS ARTISTS, he's like. in this constant balance of having to be excellent bc the moment he steps out of line, the Ton will turn on him. So he made himself Better Than All Of Them. He's the best shot, the best dancer, the most well-read, the best at conversation, the most galant etc etc. He knows the acceptance of him as Bruce's heir is hanging by a very thin thread by the Ton, since his actual birth-parents were like. socially barely above prostitutes in terms of how much respect was offered.
He's so controlled about everything in his life and its almost like he's forgotten to allow himself to have fun, to enjoy life. He doesn't have that luxury. He needs to be Perfect. But deep down he still earns for that freedom he had at the circus, when he was allowed to be wild and free and FLY.
That's the background anyway ON TO OUR STORY
Dick isn't in any hurry to marry - after all, Bruce never felt the need to. There's no pressure. But he's also thinking about how to get all the Mamas to stop trying to set him up with their daughters - first of all, because he knows they secretly dont really respect him, they just want that Duchess title that happens to come along with his hand in marriage.
Morgan is ABSOLUTELY not interested in marriage - and least of all to any of these stuffed peacocks. However, her dad is obsessed with climbing that social ladder. so he's been pressuring her to find someone. Perhaps a viscount or a duke or something of the sort?
I'm thinking the inciting incident will be some ball. I think it'll be somewhere with a tall set of stairs, running along the sides of the room, on which guests leave and enter.
I think Morgan is sitting on the railing like the uncareful bird she is, and one of the nastier members of the Ton not-so-unintentionally shoves her as they pass by, and she falls over the railing. She is hanging on by her gloved fingertips and Dick uses some of his long-forgotten acrobatic skill to get over there and save her. In the process, he has to essentially support her by her bottom and the dress accidentally rides up to flash a fair bit of leg, and everyone sees that he's touched her "inappropriately" - to save her life, yes, but still.
Oh the drama! the scandal!
Anyway Morgan would be like "thanks but unnecessary, i had it handled"
Dick would be like "?? are you crazy? I just saved your life."
Somehow, all the excitement, or perhaps the infuriating girl before him, manages to crack through his carefully polished and polite exterior and they have a bit of an argument. He shows more emotion than every before in front of High Society. His accent even starts to slip. Morgan ends up storming out of the ball bc she's sick of this place anyway. Dick gets the mask to slip back in place.
next day, the story is obviously all over town.
Morgan is like. Fuck that guy. But also his hands felt really nice around my waist actually. and he looked pretty good in the candlelight when he swung down and saved me.
Meanwhile Dick is just rattled by the fact that she managed to get under his skin so easily - something about her was incredibly REAL and unpolished and it intrigues him.
Henrik hears about it what happened and he insist this is PERFECT because Dick compromised Morgan by touching her ass and hiking up her dress so now he HAS to marry her.
(Here the story could go one of two ways:)
Bruce refuses to allow such a union, since he's pretty "anti marriage unless for love" - the reason he never married. Henrik goes to the king and the king forces the union through and they're hastily married to avoid a scandal. Its a "forced betrothal" plot! The two of them have to play nice in public while also butting heads constantly in private, Morgan thinks she's simply swapped out one controlling man out for another. Dick, frightened by the way she made his mask slip so easily during their first encounter, fights tooth and nail to keep her at an arms length and he acts impersonal and cooly towards her. They avoid each other as much as possible, while keeping their front for the Ton. But they eventually realize they offer the other the freedom they want - Once he lets her in, Dick realizes he doesn't have to pretend to be perfect with her. He can climb trees and wade through mud and he can get angry and annoyed and sarcastic. And nobody is trying to set him up anymore. Morgan gets to go back to the countryside and away from the city she despises, and she gets a husband that allows her to do pretty much what she wants. She gets to read and better her mind - he even has a small laboratory set up for her where she can conduct her studies, something her own dad never allowed. And Wayne Manor isn't so bad, really. The servants are nice, and Dick has a bunch of funny and insane siblings. Obviously, love develops. I think they realize how they managed to find the one person they felt they could be themselves with, the one person that would accept them for who they were, because they have the same struggle with regards to the Ton and the expectations placed on them. I'm thinking at one point Talia shows up with Damian and there'd be this whole arc about whether Dick is still the heir or not? The Wayne's endure a scandal and its a rough time bc Dick's whole life's purpose is ripped out from under him, but the idea that he'd be free of his title is also?? alluring? Maybe the story would end w Dick handing the title over to Damian, and then he and Morgan travel the world. Or the second possibility:
The moment where he saves her isn't too much of a scandal where Dick would be forced to marry Morgan - but it was still enough that she's considered 'damaged goods' and her already bad reputation drops even further. Especially since her scheming father initially tries to force an engagement. So now everyone sees her as a scheming hussy that tried to trick Dick into marriage. But Dick becomes super intrigued by her. She managed to make his mask slip - how? He's drawn to her fiery nature bc its so refreshing when he's spent all of his life trying to supress that in himself. So he starts approaching her at parties and even comes to their house - Henrik is on the side pressuring her to seal the deal as quickly as possible, but Morgan isn't having any of it. Dick is just there because he likes talking to her. And she's not interested in getting married because, well, she saw how little her dad cared for her mom and she doesn't relish in the thought of having to endure that herself. But Dick still shows up, and everyone seems to think they're courting. When really, he's just trying to sate his curiosity. Morgan remains catious of him and it takes her a while to accept the attention. Eventually, they become really good friends. Once the season is over, he finds out she'll have to remain in London since her dad never goes to the country, and her mom died two years ago so Henrik sold their country-house. At this point he's grown VERY fond of her, but is a bit in denial about the depth of those feelings - he tries to convince himself it's still just about this deep curiosity he feels for her. SO he invites her to come stay at the Wayne Estate for the rest of the year or so. She accepts and then they get to have a romantic time together at the manor. She meets the family and bond with them too. Everyone is having a grand ol' time. Feelings blossom. etc. Damian shows up and that whole plot plays out much the same. Idk what the ending would be, i assume they get married and then travel the world.
Thats all - hopefully now i'll have exorcised this plot from my mind so i can go back to writing the actual story im working on
I rewatched bridgerton this week (since the new season is out soon) so anyway a Bridgerton AU is bouncing around in my brain
