Nu återvänder den brittiska artisten Charlie Cunningham med ny singel och album Idag släpps singeln So It Seems med tillhörande video (se här) hämtad från Charlie Cunninghams efterlängtade och mest ambitiösa tredje album Frame. Albumet släpps 31 mars 2023 och i vår ger han sig ut på en stor turné. Albumet Frame är Charlie Cunninghams mest ambitiösa album hittills. Charlie utvidgar sina singer/songwriter-rötter med ett album och ger oss utsmyckade, delikata låtar fyllda med balanserade referenser till artrock, jazz från en gyllene era med neoklassiska kompositioner – samtidigt som han behåller sin mästerliga avskalade och klarögda musikalitet. ‘We are the sum of the competing aspects of our personalities—these songs are conversations between mine. Learning to accept, or even embrace the conflicting parts of ourselves is a matter of self-preservation.’ Charlie Cunningham säger om albumet Charlie Cunningham har redan uppnått över en halv miljard streams och närmar sig snabbt sitt 500:e framträdande. Hemma i Storbritannien har han spelat på Londons ikoniska Queen Elizabeth Hall, medan hans fanskara har vuxit helt organiskt utanför Storbritannien, och Charlie har blivit ett vanligt inslag i Europas mest prestigefyllda konserthus. Det är lätt att förstå hans breda dragningskraft. Charlie delar sin tid mellan melankoliskt piano och den enträgna pulsen från nylonsträngad gitarr, och levererar karaktärsfulla låtar både återhållsamma och med glädjefullt uttryck. Lägg till hans varma, suggestiva röst och något tidlöst och spännande faller på plats. Charlie tog en examen i musik, trots att hans dyslexi gjorde det nästan omöjligt för honom att läsa noter. I mitten av tjugoårsåldern arbetade han med en mängd olika jobb och skrev låtar på fritiden. Han insåg att han behövde ägna sig åt sin passion fullt ut om han någonsin skulle uppnå något.  Så han sålde sin Telecaster-gitarr för att hjälpa till att finansiera en flytt till Sevilla. Han planerade ursprungligen att stanna i tre månader, men den planen sträckte sig på något sätt till nästan tre år. Han fördjupade sig helt i flamencokulturen innan han återvände hem. Först försörjde han sig blygsamt genom att spela små lokala spelningar och sedan gradvis introducera sina egna låtar i mixen. Charlie släppte sitt debutalbum Lines 2017, och arbetade med producenten Duncan Tootill för att kanalisera hans mer direkta influenser - John Martyn, Paul Simon, Nick Drake och jazzens ledande kvinnor: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald och Nina Simone - samtidigt som de smälter ihop med hans  kärlekar till artister som: Brian Eno, och Aphex Twins tidiga verk. På hans uppföljare Permanent Way 2019 jobbade Charlie med producenten Sam Hudson Scott som lät albumet växa med filmiska orkestrationer med tillstånd av Daniel Thorne (Erased Tapes) och framförd av Immix Ensemble, medan Charlie arbetade på fler låtar med producenten Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, King Krule). Trots albumets större dimensioner fanns det ingen avvägning mellan det intima och det bombastiska. Charlies skickliga kontakt med det personliga förblev dess grund. Nästa vid horisonten är Frame, en annan sofistikerad utveckling av Charlies sound där han utforskar huvudteman för det mänskliga tillståndet: hjärtesorg, andlighet, sorg och klimatångest. Charlie Cunningham har spunnit universellt relaterbara känslor från nyanserna i sina egna personliga observationer och upplevelser till sitt mest fulländade arbete hittills. Quem Vai Ficar com Mário? / There’s Something About Mario (2021)

Mario decides to tell his family the truth about himself. But when he is finally ready to come out in front of the entire family, his older brother Vicente ruins his plans.

Even though the movie is classified as a comedy, I didn’t find the first half of the movie to be very funny. On the contrary, it was pretty tense to me because of how the family (mostly father) reacted to their son coming out. I think the acting done there was pretty good and convincing, almost too convincing for me. The second part of the movie I liked more and that’s where the comedy comes in if you ask me.

I’m not fond of the whole concept of the at-first-gay-guy gradually falling for a girl throughout the movie. I’d prefer if it was the other way around :D but I do think that Mario and Ana were a good match. Also, (spoiler alert!) when Vicente first came out at the dinner table, I thought he was lying and “testing the waters” because he wanted to ensure his little brother would receive better treatment or see what he’s gonna have to go through. In the end it turned out that he really was gay, not that it mattered, but it kinda seemed unconvincing to me.

Maurits van Oranje

Vandaag op 14 november 1567 werd Maurits van Oranje geboren in Dillenburg, Duitsland. Maurits was de prins van Oranje, graaf van Nassau, stadhouder en legeraanvoerder van de republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden. Hij is ook wellicht de meest succesvolle familielid van de Oranjes.

Maurits was de zoon van Willem van Oranje en zijn tweede vrouw, Anna van Saksen. Maurits groeide echter op bij zijn oom, Jan van Nassau omdat zijn moeder vlak na zijn geboorte vertrok en krankzinnig werd verklaard en zijn vader was druk bezig met de opstand tegen Spanje. Maurits was slechts 16 jaar oud toen zijn vader werd doodgeschoten in Delft op 10 juli 1584.

Iets meer dan een jaar na zijn vader's dood, werd Maurits op 1 november 1585 tot stadhouder van Holland en Zeeland benoemd. Maurits boekte grote militaire successen zoals de verovering van het noordoosten van Nederland en de inname van Breda in 1590. Ook was Maurits begaafd in oorlogsstrategieën. Zo was Maurits de uitvinder van een nieuwe methode van oorlogsvoering die door heel Europa werd overgenomen. Deze nieuwe strategie werd pas echt zichtbaar tijdens de slag bij Nieuwpoort.

Maurits werd in het jaar 1600 door de Staten-Generaal, onder leiding van raadpensionaris Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, naar Vlaanderen gestuurd om de stad Duinkerke in te nemen. Deze stad was een ware nest van Kaapvaarders die grote schade toebracht aan de Nederlandse handelsvloot. Tegelijkertijd was er ook een Spaans leger onderweg naar Vlaanderen. Beide legers kwamen elkaar plotseling tegen nabij Nieuwpoort wat tot een veldslag leidde op 2 juli 1600.

Maurits wist op het nippertje een overwinning te behalen dankzij zijn geavanceerde oorlogsstrategie maar hij was wel woest op van Oldenbarnevelt vanwege het in gevaar brengen van het voortbestaan van het land door deze missie. Na deze veldslag werd de relatie tussen de twee mannen steeds slechter en slechter.

De relatie verzuurde helemaal na het ingaan van het twaalfjarige bestand in 1609. Maurits wilde namelijk de strijd voortzetten maar van Oldenbarnevelt wilde de strijd tijdelijk staken om de handelspositie van het jonge land te verstevigen. Van Oldenbarnevelt begon ook te vrezen dat Maurits misschien een staatsgreep zou plegen waardoor hij de Scherpe Resolutie aannam. Hierin stond dat soldaten die door Holland werden betaald, ook alleen maar aan Holland gehoorzaam mochten zijn. Deze resolutie zat niet echt lekker bij Maurits die vreesde dat dit zijn macht als opperbevelhebber van het leger zou aantasten.

Uiteindelijk werd van Oldebarnevelt gearresteerd en beschuldigd van hoogverraad. Op 12 mei 1619 werd hij dan ook onthoofd in Den Haag. Uiteindelijk werd Maurits ook nog stadhouder van Groningen en Drenthe na het overlijden van zijn neef in 1620. In 1623 werd er een aanslag op Maurits gepleegd. Deze aanslag mislukte en bleek te zijn opgezet door de zonen van de onthoofde van Oldebarnevelt. Één van de zonen, Reiner, werd ook onthoofd maar de andere zoon, Willem, wist te ontsnappen naar Brussel.

Terwijl het beleg van Breda in 1624 nog gaande was, werd Maurits ziek en verbleef hij in Den Haag om staatszaken te regelen. Hij stierf op 23 april 1625 en zijn lichaam is begraven in de nieuwe kerk in Delft. Het is niet bekend aan welke ziekte Maurits nou precies stierf.

Dit zijn nog een paar punten van Maurits' revolutionaire militaire ontwikkeling: De meeste legers rond zijn tijd bestonden voornamelijk nog uit huurlingen die meestal voor slechts één seizoen werden gehuurd om te vechten. Zij waren dan ook meestal ongedisciplineerd en moeilijk te commanderen. Maurits besloot om hierop een oplossing te vinden en hield de meeste van zijn inspiratie uit klassieke militaire geschriften van de Grieken en de Romeinen.

Hij voerde de systematische troepenexercitie in zodat soldaten meer gedisciplineerd waren en beter hun wapens onder controle hadden. Ook voerde hij een gemeenschappelijke commandotaal in zodat communicatie sneller en beter verliep tijdens veldslagen. Verder voerde Maurits het systeem in waarop soldaten in lijnen stonden en schoten. De eerste lijn schoot en sloot zich daarna achteraan de lijn om te herladen. Tijdens het herladen schoot de tweede lijn, dan de derde enzovoort. Zo was de eerste lijn klaar om te schieten als zij weer vooraan stonden. Hierdoor werd het mogelijk voor een regiment om constant te vuren.

Verder richtte Maurits ook nog twee militaire opleidingen op voor officieren en stelde diverse handboeken op met militaire doctrines. Ook standaardiseerde hij de wapens en munitie van het staatse leger waardoor er minder verschillende soorten munitie en onderdelen hoefden te worden geproduceerd en meegenomen.

Deze veranderingen waren zo revolutionair dat snel alle machten van Europa zijn systeem overnamen. We hebben de uitvinding van moderne oorlogsvoering dus eigenlijk te danken aan Maurits van Oranje.

Good Riddance, Breda...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (6th-10th January 2020)

It was finally the end of Breda this week as her identity as the serial killer was revealed. However, following Breda’s scheming last week, the police were thrown totally off the scent as they arrived to arrest Mercedes for the murders, just as the McQueen’s were sitting down to a late Christmas lunch. Meanwhile, over at The Hutch, Darren was rushed to hospital following the stabbing, but there was relief all round when Misbah revealed that he was going to be fine. Back at The Dog, Mercedes was released pending further investigation. Whilst she’d been gone, John Paul had been doing a spot of detective work and discovered the box of ‘evidence’ that Breda had been hiding. He shared his discovery with Mercedes and the pair came to the shocking realisation that Breda was the serial killer. However, the pair knew that they’d need more evidence before the police would take them seriously so, whilst John Paul kept Breda distracted at home, Mercedes headed for the pig farm...

Events at the pig farm escalated quickly, as Tony was discovered, Sylver was stabbed, the place was set on fire, and finally, Breda was stabbed through the head with her own knitting needles . Tony and Sylver were rushed to hospital, and Diane, who’d been at the hospital attending an event with Edward, was shocked to see her husband wheeled past her. This particularly threw a spanner in the works, as Edward and Diane had just decided to get together properly. However, Diane was relieved to know that Tony hadn’t left her, and told Edward that they must never speak of what had happened between them. Clearly furious that Tony was back, Edward briefly considered not helping him when the machines he was hooked up to began to beep. Why the doctors were unable to hear the noise themselves, we’ll never know. When Tony later came round, Diane showed him some drawings the kids had done. Realising that Edward had wormed his way into their lives, Tony begged Diane to keep Edward away from them...

As Tony recovered in hospital, Diane brought the kids in to see him. Whilst Rose and Dee Dee were pleased to see him, Ant was hostile towards his Father, demanding to know where he’d been and why he’d left them. Despite trying, Tony was unable to explain the true gravity of the situation, which frustrated Ant, who began banging his action figure on the table. The noise took Tony right back to the pig farm and he shouted at his son, frightening all three kids. At that moment, Edward rushed in and demanded to know what was going on. Once the kids were taken home, Tony confronted Edward over his failures as a Father, and Edward spun him a tall tale about how he’d tried to stay involved, but had been thwarted by Tony’s Mum at every turn. Tony seemed to believe his Father, and he later told Diane he wanted Edward to stick around...

In order to help them deal with the trauma that Breda had put them through, Jack, Sylver and Tony attended therapy sessions later in the week. Diane was shocked when Tony broke down in tears, as he grieved for Breda, and became jumpy at every little noise. Meanwhile, Sylver was struggling to know how to feel; he hated his Mum for sending him to prison, but he felt guilty for killing her. Mercedes accompanied Sylver to the session to ensure he didn’t confess to murder (how do the police think those knitting needles became embedded in Breda’s skull?!) and hoped that a reconciliation might be on the cards. However, Mercedes was left devastated when Sylver decided that his future lay with Grace. Jack was also deciding to make a knew start, beginning with a holiday. However, as Jack boarded the ferry, Warren Fox and the twins were disembarking, with Warren telling the kids that it was time to put their family back together. It would appear that Warren hasn’t changed a bit, as he ended the week by kidnapping Brody!

Elsewhere this week, Sienna continued to struggle with Brody and Liberty’s actions, whilst Martine urged her to remember that the pair had only slept together to give her a baby. Sienna later felt guilty when Liberty was rushed to hospital after a scare, and had been alone as Sienna had insisted that Brody spend the day with her. Edward’s daughter, and Tony’s half sister, Verity arrived on the scene, and immediately hit it off with Sami and finally, Jesse and Courtney prepared for their wedding.

Crónica de World Athletics Para un país que ha gobernado durante mucho tiempo los 100 metros femeninos en el nivel senior, parece casi injusto que Jamaica tenga una oferta tan envidiable de talento que todavía está emergiendo en las filas adolescentes. Pero en el  Campeonato Mundial de Atletismo Sub-20 Cali 22  el miércoles (3), el mundo se dio cuenta de que el futuro de las carreras de velocidad femeninas podría parecerse mucho a su presente, con chalecos amarillos y verdes firmemente en primer plano.  Tina Clayton logró su segundo título mundial consecutivo Sub-20 de 100 metros con un récord de campeonato y un récord nacional Sub-20 de 10,95 (-0,1 m/s), con su compañera de equipo Serena Cole, quien también es su compañera de escuela en esa fábrica de corredores rápidos, Edwin Allen High School. logrando la medalla de plata en 11.14.  Sin embargo, en tercer lugar, EE. UU. demostró que también tiene una joven velocista capaz de convertirse en campeona senior, y probablemente no pasará mucho tiempo antes de que Shawnti Jackson, la hija del campeón mundial de 400 m con vallas de 2005, Bershawn, ya no tenga esa información. mencionado junto a su nombre.
